Stars were all aligned on Saturday to provide the perfect setting for celebrations at the Walpole Volunteer Fire and Rescue Station.

The VFRS has provided Walpole with the essential emergency service of road crash rescue and fire protection for 50 years. Facilities back then were an old shed transported from Wundowie and a basic Mazda fire truck. Over the years volunteer members have added a training room and patio area. In 1996 a new engine room was added to house a heavy-duty vehicle and light tanker.

Volunteers now have the luxury and comfort of a change room, clean storage for PPE gear, shower facilities, upgraded training room and office.

New renovations were officially opened by Darren Klemm AFSM, Commissioner for DFES. The Commissioner was sincerely thanked for his awareness of the cause, needs and welfare of volunteers and played a significant role in providing finance for the upgrades and ensured all changes were in keeping with the original buildings and suited the members.

Farewell

Kath Lymon

The Committee of Nornalup Residents and Ratepayers Association, residents of Nornalup and her many friends say a sad goodbye on your departure from Nor-nalup and wish you well on your return to home in Perth.

Kath has left us with a lasting legacy and impression.

Her professionalism in attending to the affairs of NRRA as secretary and her expertise in presenting Picnic at Nornalup in 2018 and 2019 (due to her knowledge in the Art World), has been inspirational. Her garden work at her past residence has been something to behold.

Farewell Kath, we will miss you so much.

Our love always and our best wishes for the future.

Murky changes to marron movement regulations Member for Warren-Blackwood Terry Redman says clandestine changes to marron consignment regulations is causing confusion for industry and buyers of Western Australia’s prize freshwater crayfish.

Licenced marron growers have contacted Mr Redman recently to express concern with the McGowan Government’s plan to remove consignment notices when transporting marron.

The requirement has been in place for more than 20 years and ensures marron bought from licenced aquaculturalists and transported to points of sale are done so in a legal and traceable manner.

Mr Redman said industry representatives felt the proposed change opened an opportunity for moving illegally sourced marron, threatening both licensed commercial growers as well as putting native fishery stock at risk.

“A Department of Fisheries consignment notice has a unique number cross-referenced with the registered grower licence number, ensuring all marron come from legitimate sources,” he said.

“Growers believe removal of the consignment notice is a Government cost saving exercise, as there is no reduction in red-tape for growers.

“The only change is the Government will no longer produce consignment booklets provided to growers as part of their annual $455 licence fee.”

When asked about the changes in Parliament today, Fisheries Minister Dave Kelly clearly had no idea they were occurring.

Mr Redman said fears that poachers could simply write a receipt using the licence number of a registered grower and then transport illegal marron were legitimate.

“I am also appalled by the lack of consultation with industry especially on a change that will negatively affect growers. It is bad form to send out a new policy and then say ‘we will talk to you about this later’,” he said.

“It is one thing to reduce red-tape, but when a Government decision opens an industry to duplicitous activity and puts native marron populations at risk, there is something wrong.

Commemoration at Walpole War Memorial Remembrance Day was observed at the Walpole Memorial with a commemoration led by RSL member Harold Luxton. One hundred-and-one years since the signing of the armistice which ended World War 1, and with the passing of time, it now has a broader meaning as we remember all who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and those who continue to faithfully serve their country in the hope of peace.

Walpole Sub Branch RSL President, Kevin Pierce, laid a wreath, and flowers in vases were placed at the Memorial. A minute’s silence was observed at 11am. It was very pleasing to have a large number of Walpole Primary School students attending with their Principal and teachers. The children sang “A Candle for Remembrance” which was absolutely delightful. It was clear that they had an understanding of the history of the occasion, with many wearing poppies. The younger children who remained at school also observed a minute’s silence at 11am.

We all enjoyed singing the National Anthem at the conclusion of the commemoration. A very pleasant morning tea followed at St George’s Anglican Church. Thank you to everyone who attended and all who supported the Poppy Appeal.

Life’s Challenges Our life’s journey on Earth has many challenges, would you agree? I would like to share about a single Mum and her son, some of you may know, Paula and Jack Rowlands.

I first met Paula at our Seniors group, she came and we made candles. Paula used to sell her soy candles and soaps at Walpole markets. Jack, her son, was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum and life has had many challenges for them both. I have admired and respect how they have dealt with these challenges.

Paula is a resourceful, hard-working single mum taking responsibility for her and Jack’s lives. Paula has shared with us how she has appreciated Walpole Primary School and certain people within Walpole who have helped them over the years.

They moved to Denmark three years ago so Jack could attend the Agriculture College where he has just graduated.

Gloria Jackson and I have, on occasions, called in to see them both after Church and I had the privilege of attending Jack’s graduation in Denmark on Friday 15th November.

Thank you

Graham Edwards for donating a much needed cupboard for the Walpole Community Hall.

~ WCRC Team

I would like to say “Well Done” to Jack and to Paula for taking responsibility for your life’s challenges.

God’s blessings and guidance for your futures. ~ Betty Jeffs

‘Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind’ Former Walpole Primary School student Jack Rowlands graduated Year 12 College of Agriculture in Denmark on Friday and would like to thank his supporters from Walpole way, Betty Jeffs and his Albany cousins who traveled in to help him celebrate the day. Despite the challenges of being on the Spectrum, Jack has shown perseverance and determination pay off. From helping to lay lino in the kitchen area with Rob Griffiths and looking after the chooks at Walpole Primary to working with cattle, sheep, horses, driving tractors, climbing trees, using chainsaws and learning various other farming skills at the Ag College. Some highlights have been winning ribbons for his sheep at the Royal and Albany shows, getting his Recreational Skippers Ticket and receiving several Cert II Certificates through the college. Along the way he has also learnt to play guitar thanks to Walpole’s very own Rob V and achieve Black belt in Taekwondo. We encourage anyone with challenges or not to just give it a go, do what you love and be yourself because ‘Those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind’ (a favourite Dr Seuss quote). Jack hopes to put all his hands-on farming skills to good use in 2020.

Manjimup Cherry Harmony Festival Inaugural Art Prize The 2019 Manjimup Cherry Harmony Festival will feature an exciting new art prize that will further enhance the cultural activities of the event.

The Manjimup Cherry Harmony Festival Inaugural Art Prize invites artists, both local and from further afield, to submit works based on the theme of ‘harmony’ in an Open and a Young Artist Class.

The works will be exhibited at the Manjimup Art Gallery, Corner Rose and Mount Streets, from 25th November until 19th December 2019.

Erin Knight, who began her career as an art teacher in Manjimup and now lectures in visual arts at the University of Western Australia, will judge the Prize. The winner of the Open Class (co-sponsored by the Shire of Manjimup and Century Batteries) will receive $3,000 and the winner of the Young Artist Class, $250 together with an opportunity to have their own exhibition in the Manjimup Art Gallery. There will also be a People’s Choice Award valued at $200.

In this, its augural year, the Prize has drawn works by 30 artists in the Open Class and six in the Young Artist Class. The number of participants is expected to grow as the Prize becomes more widely known.

The Shire of Manjimup, has been a longstanding advocate for the arts, are strong supporter of the Prize. From 1967 until 1984 the Shire purchased the Manjimup Art Prize winning entry. These works collectively form part of one of the Shire’s primary art collections and are exhibited regularly including in late 2018 as part of the Manjimup Moods exhibition.

There is no doubt that the Manjimup Cherry Harmony Festival Inaugural Art Prize provides opportunities on a range of levels.

Participating artists benefit from greater exposure for their work, a competitive environment and the chance to network with other artists and art lovers. At the same time, the Art Prize will draw new visitors to the area to view the exhibition both during and after the Festival.

Shire President, Paul Omodei, said he was particularly pleased that this new art prize featured a Young Artist Class as it offered an important opportunity to nurture the artistic talent of young people in the Shire.

Bushfires equals fake charity scams Seeing the recent bushfires is horrifying for most of us and we just want to help somehow. But unfortunately scammers see it as an opportunity to impersonate charities, or create fake charities. This can happen online, via social media or website pop-ups, or in person, such as at your front door or on the street.

It’s doubly cruel because not only does it con the donor out of their money, it also denies the true cause much-needed funds for those truly affected.

Prevent charity donations from ending up in the wrong hands by avoiding uninvited approaches altogether. Instead, approach your chosen charity directly, through contact details you are 100% sure of, to make a donation.

If you happen to respond to an out-of-the-blue email, phone call or face-to-face request, triple check it’s the real deal.

Online scammers might create a copycat version of a well-known charity website, so you need to be absolutely sure the url / web address you are using is the right one.

Ask door-to-door collectors for their ID and if in doubt call the charity via the number listed on their official website to check if the person truly represents them.

Any charitable fundraising in WA should only happen with the appropriate licence or permit from Consumer Protection – see our licensed charities register at www.consumerprotection.wa.gov.au

The licensing system is about preventing misuse of funds and means the charity’s finances are audited.

Bushfire Preparedness Survey The Shire has entered into a partnership with Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Community Preparedness Branch and the Bushfire Risk Management Branch, to deliver a Bushfire Preparedness Survey. The survey is being managed by an independent research company, Research Solutions.

The State Government has supported the Shire of Denmark to participate in the Bushfire Risk Management Planning Program. This has enabled the Shire to complete a comprehensive assessment of bushfire risk within the Shire and commence development of a local Bushfire Risk Management Plan.

Under the plan, the Shire will undertake a range of activities to minimise the risk of bushfire to residents.

Private property preparation and personal preparedness plays a significant role in overall bushfire mitigation and your participation in this survey will help DFES and the Shire understand more about what Denmark residents are doing to prepare for the risk of bushfire and how we can improve our community engagement and bushfire mitigation program to make our community safer in the event of a bushfire.

There are two outcomes we are hoping to achieve from the survey:

Gauge current levels and attitudes towards household preparedness, this will assist us in future community support and education programs

Gauge attitudes to bushfire risk and bushfire mitigation techniques available, to advise our future mitigation programs and education opportunities about these methods.

This survey has been sent to a sample of households in the Shire of Denmark and is expected to take about 20 minutes to complete.

If have any questions about this survey and why it is being conducted, please contact Melanie Haymont at the Shire of Denmark on [email protected] or 9848 0300.

A summary of the results will be published on the Shire of Denmark’s website in 2020.

Walpole Country Club Bowls Report The Bowling Club held a successful Open Men’s Triples day on Wednesday 13th November with 12 teams from different clubs playing on a beautiful day.

The winning team for the Open Men’s Triples came from Denmark and included R. Hancock, I Robbins and D. Douglas; second came W. Jones’ team from Albany and third, L. Brown’s team from Emu Point.

The visitors made positive comments about the condition of our greens and the food that was provided. The lady bowlers catered for a two course lunch and a fantastic afternoon tea.

On Thursday 14th, six of our ladies including myself went to Denmark to participate in the Denmark Bowling Clubs Ladies Gala Day. Gala Days are primarily a social gathering where we play competitive bowls in teams of four.

In Denmark these teams were organized so that two ladies of one club played with two ladies of another club. There are lots of prizes and raffles, a market stall and good food provided by the catering club. It was an enjoyable day out.

Pennants were played at home on Saturday 16th November:

The ladies played against Albany Green. One of our teams won by a small margin and one of them lost also by a small margin.

We unfortunately lost the aggregate by 3 points: Walpole 1, Albany Green 3.

The men played Mid Beach White and again were very successful winning all three games and therefore the aggregate. Walpole 6, Mid Beach White 0.

Coming Events: The ladies have no Pennants this coming Saturday however, the men do. They will be playing away against Albany White.

On Wednesday 27th the ladies will play their Championship Fours.

Wednesday 4th of December at 12:30pm will be Trophy Day, all members are welcome.
