At a time when it is fashionable to criticise local Government. I had the pleasure to observe Brad and Mark, our local Shire of Manjimup workers, removing tree prunings and debris from the road verges around town.
This co-operation between Walpole Tidy Towns and Shire employees is to be praised and no doubt contributes to the attractiveness of Walpole.

What an amazing evening. Four powerful soloists
singing their hearts out midst the spot-lit trees.
Sara rendering ‘Ode to the Moon’ while over her head the moon is shining among the karris. Thomas on the keyboard producing grand-piano resonance. I think the WA Opera company enjoyed themselves as well.
What a shame Walpole didn’t know more about it.

Clearing North Walpole Road
I would like to thank the Shire of Manjimup for replying to my letter in the Walpole Weekly.
There are some answers, but it is far from clear what is being planned.
No more than 10 trees will be removed Mr Omodei writes. Which ones? How many of the centuries old trees are on the list?
I still believe that this road can be fixed without removing any big trees. For starters there should be a speed limit of 70km/h driving south before the two big trees that are closest to the road, plus give way signs. I am sure the clever engineers from the Shire can find a way to give us a safe road without cutting down these iconic trees. This road is not a truck route and is also not a black spot for accidents.
There must be something wrong with us if we cannot navigate this road without incident.
Roadside clearing has had a horrendous cumulative effect throughout the state. Thousands of hectares of remnant roadside vegetation gets mindlessly cleared. The “It’s just a couple of trees” does not cut it anymore!
Tourists get their first impression of our awesome wilderness right here in Walpole.
The Shire of Manjimup has a nice tree in its logo. I hope it’s there for the right reasons.

In response to the photo in last week’s edition of litter observed in Bathurst, NSW, we were
compelled to send in this photo taken right outside the White House in Washington, during our recent trip to USA. Amazing that people not only contribute to this obvious disgraceful action, but also that everyone walks right on by, ignoring it.

facility with USA - sort of what you’d half expect to see.
It was interesting to note that San Francisco is now single use plastic bag free. If that city can do it, anywhere can. Good on them.
Oh, how nice to come back home to litter free Walpole! Let’s keep it that way!

Parks and Wildlife Service Warren Regional Manager Luke Bentley said the Tree Top Walk had recently turned twenty-one.
“What better way to celebrate than with lovers of music and the local communities who have helped make the Tree Top Walk the success it is,” Mr Bentley said.
“Talented artists, including Sara Macliver, Fleuranne Brockway, Paul O’Neill and Mark Alderson made the valley come alive with their renditions of the classics.
“Several kookaburras also joined in with their own musical renditions creating a bit of fun during the performance.”
Mr Bentley said the free performance was part of the Opera in the Regions concert series in celebration of the company’s 50th anniversary.
“Events such as this are a win-win for local towns with economic flow-on benefits for accommodation providers and service industries,” he said.

WAOpera at the Primary School Thomas Johnson and Perry Joyce, from the WA Opera, visited the school prior to their performance at the Tree Top Walk. It is the opera company’s 50th anniversary. Tom is a pianist and Perry is a tenor. It was amazing that he could sing so high.
They taught us how to sing. We had to stretch before singing and learnt the importance of singing with resonance, getting your body to vibrate. We also learnt to elongate our vowels like “pulling gum out of your mouth”.
The Year 2-6 students sang some of the songs from our upcoming concert. They gave us some tips. We also did an angklung performance which they loved and laughed at.
When they sing for the opera, they sing in different languages including French, Italian, German and Czech.

Recreation Centre - Fun Run
A little bit of light drizzle Sunday morning didn’t
dampen the enthusiasm of the Fun Runners who turned out for the centre’s 6th annual Fun Run.
A smaller field this year, just under 30 runner/walkers, participated in the 5km walk/run and 10km run.
All competitors were very enthusiastic, with some clocking up some very impressive times.
The Fun Run always attracts a very wide range of age groups and fitness levels.
Some of our participants ran a 10km distance for the very first time.
It’s all about just having a go, self achievement.

An event like this takes a lot of planning and time,
setting up and unpacking.
It also requires a lot of volunteers on the day to ensure it runs smoothly.
I would like to thank everyone involved in the Fun Run on Sunday, from the Marshalls to the registration team, our timers and of course the participants.
A big thankyou to the Walpole Work Camp for making sure the track was in perfect condition for the event, helping set up, put away, and for Marshalling on the day.

Snake season safety The Shire of Manjimup is urging residents to be vigilant and on the lookout for snakes when enjoying the outdoors as the warmer weather approaches. Snakes are out and about and the Shire Rangers are receiving calls with regard to snakes within the residential areas of our townsites.
Shire President Paul Omodei cautioned “Snakes will normally try to avoid humans, however, we still need to be aware and take some precautions such as wearing long pants and enclosed shoes if possible while walking near bush, as well as keeping dogs under control if walking with them.”
Residents should to be aware that keeping backyards clear of long grass, household rubbish and unused building materials as well as not having pet food laying around outside will reduce the risk of snakes around the home.
Outdoor aviaries and chicken pens often attract snakes and keeping them and their surrounding area free from discarded bird/chicken feed will help deter the snakes’ favourite prey such as mice and rats. This will help reduce the risk of snakes entering your property.
If you would like more information on first aid, please contact the St John Ambulance Walpole Sub Centre.
Shire Rangers can capture and relocate snakes during normal working hours if they are available or you can also contact the 24-hour Wildcare Helpline on 9474 9055 for details of licensed operators who can safely remove and relocate snakes within your area.

Celebrating 36 years of fun and creativity
Since 1981, the Denmark Arts Markets have been an annual celebration of creativity in our community filled with colour, music and fun. This season will be no exception, with the opening market day on Saturday 9th December.
Affectionately known as “the locals’ market” the first of the season is a favourite with many Great Southerners, who enjoy the smaller crowds before peak tourist season. With so many hand-made offerings on offer, this is a great opportunity to partake of the wares of a multitude of talented creators.
Another reason this market is popular along the South Coast is because it showcases the musical talents of our young people. The ever popular market stage will open this season with The Denmark Fiddlers.
By now, the musical talent and enthusiasm among our high school students is no secret, and we will be treated once again this year to an eclectic performance by Denmark Senior High School music students.
A sensory feast of music and dance will be provided by the Zumba Groove before making way for Sam Le Breton on the main stage. Sam grew up in Denmark, attending the Denmark Agricultural College before moving to Perth to take up a place in the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) studying Contemporary Music. Sam will take the stage with a trio featuring locals Charlie Cloud on drums and Clay Western on bass, performing Sam’s original compositions.
In a line-up dominated by local artists, local original rock group ‘Dig the Dust’ from Walpole, will be bringing us all home to roost after a massive day of music and merriment.
Now a summertime institution in the Great Southern, the Denmark Arts Markets always proves to be a great day out. Each market runs from 10am to 4pm by the river in Berridge Park. Walpole Rec Centre.
Our junior gymnasts (Levels 1 & 2) will be showing off their skills at 4.30pm,
with the older gymnasts (Level 3 and above) performing at 4.45pm.
