STORE OF THE YEAR SUBMISSION

Project start date: April 2008

Store open: September 22, 2008

Store open until 1am throughout the week and open 24 hours a day during finals.

The University hosted a 5K run to promote the new Starbucks and library renovation.

they get an A for ambiance WFU Alumni OfficeA Starbucks opened last week in the reading room, part

of a trend across the country in which once hushed university libraries are being transformed into vibrant

campus community centers.

Every time Im about to fall asleep and Im studying, I come down here and get a triple shot of espresso.

A Starbucks is a hub of activity, says librarian Lynn Sutton. There are people flowing in and out of there

every hour its open. Its a destination The Starbucks stores also functioned as informal community centers, she said, where people put up posters for community

events.

Librarians found that having a Starbucks kept students there longer, and the longer they stayed, the

more they used library resources. Students asked for tutorials, for writing help and computer help.

Giunca, Mary. Winston-Salem Journal, October 2, 2008

the appeal of Starbucks was evident as people poured into the two-level space. Light jazz played in the background.

Students tapped on laptops. They rehashed the previous nights parties. They studied in pairs. Winston-Salem Journal
