I have not played with dolls in a very long time, but recently I saw a new Barbie that I really want! It is called “Day of the Dead Barbie!” (Pictured at right.) Isn’t she beautiful? Unfortunately, Mattel ran out of them pretty quickly and she is on back order. If I am lucky, I may be able to purchase one by next year. That the doll sold out so fast tells me the influence of the Day of the Dead ob-servance has achieved a distinct place in popular culture. While I have known about the celebration of “Dia de los Muertos” for many years, I came to a new appreciation of it when Disney released the film Coco a few years ago. If you have not seen this film I must tell you that it is delightful. And it has a compelling message as well.

Dia de los Muertos has its origins in ancient Meso-American cultures – the Mayans, Incas and Aztec civi-lizations. In these cultures it was understood that death is as much a part of life as our living is! Those who have “died” continue to be present to us, so people sought to welcome and honor them. In the movie Coco the film-makers present the idea that as long as we continue to remember our loved ones who have died, they have not died at all. The only way one can truly die is if we forget them when they have gone. When the last person who physically “knew” the dead no longer remembers, then one has truly died.

To help us remember, “ofrendas” (little shrines) are set up in one’s home. They are traditionally decorated with marigold flowers and small “skulls” made of sugar and brightly decorated. The most prominent feature would be photographs of those being honored. There are four parts to the ofrenda representing four elements – wind, fire, earth and water. Our deceased loved ones would of course need water to drink after making such a long journey to visit us, and they would need food. Bread is at the shrine to offer as food and to represent the earth from which wheat is grown. Cut out paper flags

are strung across the streets and homes to represent the wind/air and candles or lanterns are lit to represent fire.

Perhaps what is most important is Dia de los Muertos is a joyful time – not intended to be sad or mournful. In its origins, the day is not specifically reli-gious. But then, as has happened to so many other non-religious traditions that come from other cultures and civilizations, the Church has resignified the days. Dia do los Muertos corresponds to the dates of October 31st to November 2nd. All Hallows Eve (Halloween) and November 1st becomes Dia de los Inocentes (“Day of the Innocents”) or Dia de los Angelitos, (“little angels”) where children are specifically remembered. November 2nd is the traditional Dia de los Muertos.

In the Church’s observance, November 1st is called All Saints Day, where the Church remembers those who have been canonized as “Saints.” All Soul’s Day, November 2nd is to honor all the faithful who have died. There is a slight caveat to All Soul’s Day, as includ-ed in that tradition is the remembrance of those who may have attained heaven, as well as those we are not so sure about… perhaps they were received in purgatory. We offer our prayers for their souls that they might one day be received by God in the heavenly realms.

Much of the history of these traditions are some-what lost to those of us in our modern practice of “trick

I invite you to remember those you love whom you have lost. There is no need to construct a shrine in your home, but I would invite you to set out a photograph of your loved ones. You might like to light a candle too. Most importantly, remember. Give thanksgiving for those who came before. wrong in worship and widening the platform to what can be a new kind of worship, attire, praise, and mes-sage. Meeting them where they are might mean helping them work through in real time, answers to complex questions about faith. Meeting them where they are is helping them help someone else feel as at home as they do at FCCNH. Meeting them where they are is to show them and teach them how to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ so that their Spiritual maturity can infuse the movement of the Holy Spirit in our midst.

Let us think on what this means for our youth. Let us think on what this means for this church 20 years from now. Let us think how we can continue to do great work in our little corner of the world as we seek to help our youth handle a complex world with a complex faith.

With Love,Jeremy Gillett

Director of Youth Ministries

I greet you in the wonderful magnificent name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

I spend a lot of time with our youth and I’ve learned that being a middle school and high school youth today is to be engaged in a world of deep contradictions with multiple layers of complexity. Our youth, like many adults, are at various stages of faith development. Some enjoy a deep faith, others waver at times and another group of young people are faithful but have tough ques-tions as to why certain situations unfold the way they do if they’re practicing Christians. We should know that at the early age of 12, our youth are experiencing bul-lying, being introduced to drugs and are trying to navi-gate ever-changing school environments, and by the way…they’re continuing to experience puberty. How are they to handle this level of complexity?

For me, being active in a faith community is part of the answer. A church home is a place they can feel open to be themselves. “Themselves” does not equal disre-spectful behavior, comments, or actions. However, be-ing themselves might mean they dress, talk, and express their praise and gratefulness for and to Jesus Christ dif-ferently than we do. What am I trying to say? Well, we as adult leaders and mentors can foster a church home for our youth that gives them permission to explore their relationship with Jesus. We as adult leaders and mentors can make the church a place of refuge from which the youth can seek wisdom and understanding. And make no mistake – we need to be this kind of place for our young people.

Get to the point Jeremy! Sure thing, Spirit. There is a conscious effort from The Devil (yes, that’s the word, Devil) to overtake the spirits of our youth and we have to be an open place for conversation and worship that will meet youth where they are in life and on their spiritual journeys. Meeting them where they are in life might mean having less complexity in what is right and
