Obituary for Brother Knight, Sir Knight Someone Else

Our Council 524 and Assembly 1196 was saddened to learn this week of the death of one of our most valued members, Brother Knight, Sir Knight Someone Else. Someone’s passing creates a vacancy that will be difficult to fill. Else has been with us for many years and for every one of those years, Someone did far more than a normal person’s share of the work. Whenever there was a job to do, or a meeting to attend, one name was on everyone’s list. “Let Someone Else do it.” Whenever leadership was mentioned, this wonderful person was looked to for inspiration as well as results: “Someone Else can work with that group.” It was common knowledge that Someone Else was among the most liberal givers in our Council and Assembly. Whenever there was an event to work, a funeral to attend, a membership blitz, or a bingo night to support, everyone just assumed Someone Else would take care of it. Someone Else was a wonderful person: sometimes appearing superhuman. Were the truth be known, everybody expected too much from Someone Else. Now Someone Else is gone! We wonder what we are going to do. Someone Else left a wonderful example to follow, but who is going to follow it? Who is going to do the things Someone Else did?

When you are asked to help this year, remember why you joined the Knights

We can’t depend on Someone Else anymore.

VOCATIONS

An official escort to the president, the U.S Army’s Old

Guard Unit marches in parades and provides color guard

and drill teams for many government functions. Foremost

among them is military honor funeral duty which has

absolute priority. That unit excels in manning, appearance,

training and courtesy since those tasks are conducted as no-

fail, zero-defect missions. The Guard realizes that for the

fallen and family each funeral is a once-in-a-lifetime

moment, a lifetime in the making. While most Guard

personnel have performed hundreds of times, the pressure

for perfection never ceases. The unit uses industrial quality

press and tailor machines in barracks to achieve razor-sharp

trouser creases and eliminate wrinkles. Adjustments to

uniforms are measured to one sixty-fourth of an inch. The

Guard performs its cemetery duties throughout summer

heat, heavy rain and winter blizzards (even respectfully

throughout 9/11 day. into 9/11 evening) and the Guard

endlessly practices skills like flag folding, rifle salute and

appropriate funeral demeanor such as solemn march-step;

The pressure to flawlessly perform at Arlington is

immense. A five- time-combat colonel of the Guard said

he’s never experienced stress like that at Arlington when

doing his sacred duty for families honoring America’s

heroes. Guard standards remain the same whether the

deceased is a president or a private.
