In June 2018 Volkswagen opened the order books for its new flagship SUV – the third generation Touareg – which heads the brand’s youthful product line-up as a paragon of technology, fine design, comfort and driving excellence.

Boasting the latest assistance systems, some of them appearing for the first time in a Volkswagen, the Touareg also offers the option of the new Innovision Cockpit (standard on R-Line Tech) which comprises an intuitive digital operating, information, communication and entertainment unit that can be fully personalised.

From launch, participating Volkswagen Retailers across the UK are also offering the New Touareg with a compelling finance offer. Customers opting for the Touareg R-Line with a 3.0-litre 286 PS TDI V6 through Volkswagen Financial Services’ Solutions Personal Contract Plan receive a deposit contribution of £3,000 at 3.3 per cent APR representative. That results in a monthly payment of £499.00.

Additionally, buyers who purchase a Touareg through a personal contract plan (PCP) are eligible for two services priced at £299.

The 2018 Touareg is the latest milestone in the largest product offensive in Volkswagen’s brand history. The global SUV range, led by the new car, now consists of the new T-Roc, the Tiguan, the new Tiguan Allspace, the new Atlas (USA) and its new sister model Teramont (China).

Meanwhile the T-Cross compact SUV – shown in concept form as the T-Cross Breeze – is also due to make its global debut in 2018. A zero emission model has already been decided upon, too, in the shape of the I.D. CROZZ – the first fully electric SUV from Volkswagen. It will be launched in 2020.

Debuting with efficient and potent V6 turbocharged engines the Touareg comes with an eight-speed automatic Tiptronic gearbox and 4MOTION all-wheel drive. In the UK, the car will initially be offered with a 286 PS 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel unit or, from the autumn of 2018, a 231 PS version of the same engine. A 340 PS 3.0-litre V6 turbocharged petrol engine will be available to order in the UK in late 2018, with deliveries of that powertrain beginning in 2019.

In addition a plug-in hybrid drive with a system power of 367 PS is first planned for introduction in China. The exact launch date of the Touareg with plug-in hybrid drive in Europe has yet to be set.

With a torque peak of up to 600 Nm, the 286 PS 3.0 V6 TDI also showcases the new Touareg’s extensive towing capacity. Capable of hauling braked trailer weights of up to 3.5 tonnes, the new car also boasts the latest iteration of Volkswagen’s handy Trailer Assist technology to facilitate simple slow-speed manoeuvring. The 3.0 V6 TDI with 286 PS (2,967 cc) generates its punchy torque peak of 600 Nm from only 2,250 rpm, and offers 42.8 mpg on the combined cycle. 0-62 mph takes 6.2 seconds, and the Touareg’s top speed is 146 mph.

The new third generation Touareg is equipped with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) mated to an eight-gear automatic Tiptronic gearbox with ‘shift by wire’ functionality.

A centre differential lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution acts as a transfer box for the flow of forces between the front and rear axle. A maximum of 70 per cent of the drive force reaches the front axle and up to 80 per cent can be sent to the rear axle.

Offered here in three comprehensively specified trims: SEL, R-Line and new R-Line Tech, the five-seat Touareg sits on the Volkswagen Group’s modular longitudinal matrix (MLM).

Wider and longer than before, the luxurious new SUV’s dimensions are 4,878 mm long (+77 mm); 2,193 mm wide (including wing mirrors, +44 mm) and 1,702 mm high (-7 mm). Together these create significantly more dynamic proportions and, allied to all-new styling, endow the Touareg with an imposing yet lithe style.

The five-door, five-seat Touareg offers a 1,051 mm load length and maximum load capacity of 810 litres (seats up) or 1,800 litres (seats down). Kerb weight is 2,070 kg for the launch car.

Technology made simpleOne of the many technical innovations in the new Touareg is the option of the Innovision Cockpit. The 12-inch digital instrument cluster – Active Info Display – merges with the 15-inch TFT touchscreen of the new Discover Premium infotainment system to form a new digital operating, information, communication and entertainment unit.

The Innovision Cockpit is the control centre of a new era – an interactive interface in which the information and settings of all essential comfort, assist and infotainment systems converge in one simple-to-use matrix.

Thanks to a separate eSIM mobile data connection, the new SUV is also “always on”. Indeed, never before has a Volkswagen interior of this type been digitalised and extensively linked to the vehicle functions and outside world to such an extent.

More broadly, today’s Touareg features the availability of a new generation of assistance, driving dynamics and comfort systems including technologies such as Night Vision (thermal imaging camera); Traffic Jam and Roadwork Lane Assist (partly automated steering and lane departure warning up to 37 mph, acceleration and braking); Front Cross Traffic Assist (responds to traffic crossing in front of the Touareg); active all-wheel steering; and a new roll stabilisation system with electromechanically controlled anti-roll bars.

Comfort, space and grace New technology aligns with conventional premium car values of space and cosseting comfort inside the new Touareg. The car’s optional electrically adjustable front seats, for instance, offer a new pneumatic massage function with no fewer than eight programs available. The intensity of the massage functions can be continuously adjusted via individual air cushions.

The car’s practicality is demonstrated by the flexible rear seat system. The position of the rear seats can be shifted by 160 mm fore/aft to create more space in the rear if required. Meanwhile the angle adjustment of the rear seat backrests is also variable in three stages, and by up to 21 degrees.

Natural light comes in through the optionally available panoramic sliding roof – the largest yet offered by Volkswagen. The transparent roof section is 1,270 mm long and 825 mm wide (inner dimensions), and the front half can be continuously opened and electrically moved back by almost half a metre (495 mm) and raised.

Meanwhile night driving is now more pleasant than ever thanks to a newly developed optional LED ambient light system. Using the ambient light, the atmosphere on board the Touareg can be personalised via 30 different light colours whose brightness can also be adjusted.

Lighting outside the new Touareg is equally impressive. The optional IQ.Light LED matrix headlight system, with its 128 individual LEDs per headlight, ensures efficient and intelligent lighting of the road ahead.

Welcoming the arrival of the new Touareg to Volkswagen Retailers nationwide Alison Jones, Director of Volkswagen UK, said: “The new Touareg signals yet another important development in Volkswagen’s growing SUV line-up.

“Our suite of new models, headed by Touareg, arrives on the market as SUV sales continue to accelerate in the UK and I’m confident our new flagship model will make a big impact here.”

The ‘SUV C’ segment, in which Touareg sits, accounted for around 2.4 per cent of the UK’s new car market in 2017. The Touareg competes in this segment alongside the likes of the Volvo XC90, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Land Rover Discovery.

The Touareg has been sold in the UK since 2003. Last year (2017) 3,689 Touaregs were registered here. In total, 45,594 cars have been sold in the UK since 2003. Total Volkswagen sales in the UK last year (2017), including passenger-carrying CV models, were 208,462.

The best-selling model in the current Touareg range is the 3.0 V6 TDI 262 PS R Line Plus.

The fleet/retail split for the new Touareg is expected to be around 60% fleet (previous Touareg is approx. 85% fleet in final year), and the predicted petrol/diesel split, when all engines are available in 2019, is around 80% diesel.

The new Touareg is offered in three trims in UK: SEL, R-Line and the new R-Line Tech, and first customer deliveries in the UK took place in July 2018.

The Touareg range launches in the UK across three main engine waves, beginning in June 2018 and running through to 2019.

ProductionThe new Volkswagen Touareg is built exclusively in the Volkswagen Slovakia a.s. plant in Bratislava.

The bodies are fully welded in one of the two Body shops and are then transported to the Paint shop. The Aggregate/Modules hall houses the preparation of the underbodies as well as production of gearboxes for various models in the Volkswagen AG family of brands - Audi, SEAT and ŠKODA.

The Assembly hall, the largest building in Volkswagen Slovakia with an area of around 21 football fields, houses the process of uniting the painted body with the underbody. It is also the hall where the finishing touches get put on the car including the wiring, wheels, seats and the steering wheel.

After the car is fully assembled it is transported via cable car to a test track for final on-road tests. Following a last quality inspection it is released for transport and delivery.

Volkswagen Slovakia was established in March 1991, with mass production beginning in the new factory the following year.

The Bratislava plant is currently (2018) used for the production of the Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen up!, ŠKODA Citigo and SEAT Mii. The cars are exported mainly into European countries, as well as into China.

The new Touareg sits on the Volkswagen Group’s modular longitudinal matrix (MLM) which is used for high end models with engines and gearboxes installed longitudinally.

The third generation car is moderately wider and longer than before, making it appear even more dynamic. The new dimensions: 4,878 mm length (+77 mm), 1,984 mm width (+44 mm) and 1,702 mm height (-7 mm).

Volkswagen head designer Klaus Bischoff and his team have refined the positioning of its flagship. An exclusive all-rounder, it boasts pioneering and innovative technology allied to versatility, with excellent comfort and dynamics completing the package.

The expressive design of the new Touareg reflects this new positioning. Klaus Bischoff explained: “We had the opportunity to realise our ideal concept of a large, exclusive

SUV from Volkswagen. And we have resolutely made use of this opportunity.” While the first generation of the car was characterised by a dominant off-road DNA, this direction increasingly changed through the second generation to the new Touareg, resulting in a progressive, modern and exclusive all-rounder.

Bischoff said: “The design of the new Touareg makes it unmistakably clear that it is the flagship of our brand. The power of this Volkswagen lies in its affability and elegance – this car does not have to be forceful.” Frontview. The expressive front end of the Touareg is particularly distinctive. The chromed grille appears to be machined from solid metal and is seamlessly interwoven with the continuous lines of the signature light.

Klaus Bischoff: “We wanted to create something with this front end that had never been seen before. In an intensive process, we combined the chrome elements of the front end and the new LED light system of the Touareg so that the transition between design and technology blended into a new entity.

“This front end makes the new Touareg one of the most distinctive SUVs on the global market”, said Bischoff. Sideview. Accentuated front wheel housings and carefully formed rear shoulder edges highlight the superior capability of the Touareg on any terrain. Indeed this was a design goal - to shape the most imposing SUV of its class.

The opposing window lines and character lines at the side are delicately styled, while the roof line is striking. It seamlessly extends on the eye-catching side line and dynamically concludes with the C-pillar that is angled towards the front.

The car’s enhanced dynamics are also reflected in the new range of wheels available. Each design harmonises with the car’s silhouette. The alloy wheels now start at 18 inches instead of 17, and extend right up to 21 inches.

Rearview. The wide shoulder above the rear wheels and the resulting indented greenhouse form a rear end with a strong presence.

This superiority is emphasised by the LED tail light clusters. They not only highlight the large total width of the Touareg but also the LED graphic of the front end, with its L-shaped signature light. The aesthetics of the shape is by no means detrimental to functionality though.

Indeed, almost the entire width is filled by the boot lid – but it can hardly be picked out. What remains, therefore, is an impression of the Touareg’s dynamic presence and solidity.

The interior designers have completely redesigned the Touareg, shaping it consistently for the digital age. Wherever it makes sense, digital surfaces replace conventional displays and controls.

The dominant centre of the vehicle interior is formed by the wide dash panel with the optional integrated Innovision Cockpit (standard on R-Line Tech models). This is the alliance of the digital instruments (12-inch Active Info Display) and the new Discover Premium infotainment with its 15-inch TFT touchscreen.

It is the control centre of a new era – an interactive interface for the Touareg where the information and settings of all essential comfort, assistance and infotainment systems converge in one simple-to-navigate matrix.

Thanks to a separate eSIM the Touareg is now also ‘always on’. The Innovision Cockpit is a bold departure from the conventional – never before has a Volkswagen interior of this type been digitalised and linked to the vehicle functions and outside world to such an extent.

Regardless of how rough and demanding the on-road or off-road terrain may be, the vehicle’s interior remains a luxurious comfort zone. The Innovision Cockpit screens, with their glass covered surfaces; the exquisite aluminium and chrome trim details; the vegetable tanned leathers – together these generate an extraordinarily high quality look and feel inside the new Touareg.

The availability of new massage seats, and a variable rear seat system, make comfort a priority in the Touareg’s interior.

The optional electrically adjustable front seats offer a new, pneumatic massage function for the first time in this car. Any of the eight available programs are implemented pneumatically, and the intensity of the massage functions can be continuously adjusted via individual air cushions.

Meanwhile the length of the rear seat system can be shifted by 160 mm fore/aft to create more space in the rear as required. The angle adjustment of the rear seat backrest is also variable in three stages, and by up to 21 degrees.

All five occupants therefore can have adequate space for their luggage on long trips, as the storage volume of new Touareg has grown by 113 litres to 810 litres.

Interior design

Natural light comes in through the largest panoramic sliding roof that Volkswagen has yet offered. The transparent roof section is 1,270 mm long and 825 mm wide (inner dimensions), and the front half of the roof can be opened and electrically moved back by 495 mm. An electrically activated cloth roller blind shields the Touareg’s occupants from the sun.

Driving at night is upgraded in the Touareg via the car’s new 30-colour ambient lighting system. The atmosphere on board can be personalised, while brightness can also be continuously adjusted.

InnovisionCockpitindetail

The Innovision Cockpit makes its global debut in the third generation Touareg and is standard on R-Line Tech models. The majority of functions previously controlled by individual buttons are now integrated in the 15.0 inch (1,920 x 1,020 pixel) screen of the range-topping Discover Premium infotainment system, that is curved towards the driver.

This includes control of the Climatronic 2Zone or optional 4Zone air conditioning as well as the activation of seat heating, seat ventilation and seat massage.

Intuitive and frequently used switches such as the volume control, however, still have a deliberate analogue design (although, the volume can of course also be changed using a touch function on the infotainment screen).

The glass-covered display of the Discover Premium system, sitting to the left of the driver, is visually connected to the

Digital Cockpit – the 12.0-inch, high resolution digital instruments (1,920 x 720 pixel) - on a horizontal axis. Together, the two displays of the Innovision Cockpit produce a consistent digital landscape in a ‘one screen’ design on one viewing and operating axis.

The Innovision Cockpit also includes App Connect (integrated MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™ - connectivity for all common Apple and Android smartphones; Media Control (integration of tablets); four USB ports (two at the front as interfaces for the infotainment system including charging function and two at the rear with a charging function only; and a WLAN wireless hotspot for up to eight devices.

The Innovision Cockpit can be further enhanced with a head-up display that virtually projects important information in the space in front of the driver on the windscreen.

Home screen is multi-functional and can be personalised: The digital layout of the home screen includes a status bar that can be operated and personalised (top of screen), the controllable air conditioning block (for Climatronic and seat functions), function tiles (a large central tile and two smaller freely assignable tiles), freely assignable favourite buttons (left on screen), selectable clock designs as well as a 3D model representation of the vehicle and the seats. The menu navigation has an intuitive design, too. For example, the home button – a virtual button at the bottom edge of the display as on a smartphone – can be activated from each menu to go back to the top level of the home screen. The Digital Cockpit can also be personalised via the home screen of the infotainment system.

discoverPremiumindetail

At the centre of the Innovision Cockpit is Volkswagen’s new top-of-the-range infotainment system: Discover Premium – a radio navigation system, telephone, information centre and interface for configuring various vehicle functions.

A functional and visual highlight is the display that, for the first time, is designed as a curved sheet of glass. This is equipped with a proximity sensor and operated via the touchscreen or by means of gesture or voice control, depending on the function.

The system includes 10 GB of usable memory, two SD card slots, an AUX-IN socket, four USB ports as well as a Bluetooth mobile phone interface. Discover Premium is a system based on “MIM2+ High”. MIM stand for Modular Infotainment Matrix.

discoverPremiumincludesthefollowinginnovations:

ConnectedNavigation: In navigation mode, extended 3D city models can be called up and displayed that greatly simplify orientation in an unfamiliar environment. Together with the 3D city models, a traditional map view as well as a satellite map are also available. Nav-gen4-Routing: Here an alternative route is calculated online on a server including predictive models (taking into account such variables as route profiles and topography, and recurring traffic situations) to deliver a stress-free trip. Self-learningnavigation: Volkswagen navigation systems have been learning frequently used routes and saving them for a long time to point out the status and alternative routes. In the new Touareg, the self-learning navigation is now also used to simplify destination entry. Via usage profiles, Discover Premium recognises where the driver most probably wants to drive to and suggests routes accordingly. hybridradio: Terrestrial radio reception and Internet radio merge in “MIM2+ High”. As a result, reception is realised in the best possible quality regardless of the transmission route.

Mobileonlineservices: As the system in the Touareg has an eSIM (initially in 13 European countries, including the UK), the new SUV is also always on even without a connected smartphone. This means online functions such as hybrid radio are possible, for example. At the same time the range of mobile online services is growing. This now includes reading out the news and Gracenote online (enhancement of song info that can be saved locally and then called up online later). Online info such as the latest weather forecast can also be displayed on the home screen.

digitalCockpitindetail The Digital Cockpit is, as its name implies, a digital alternative to the standard analogue instruments of the Touareg and a central component of the Innovision Cockpit.

The layout of its 12.0-inch display can be personalised by the driver via the home screen or using the multi-function steering wheel. Thus, the type and range of displays can be varied depending on the driver’s taste.

If less detail is preferred, it can be reduced to just the navigation or the media centre (as well as the digital speed and selector lever display), for example. The daily and total number of miles display is always active and remains at the same position at the bottom of the screen.

Different system displays can also be integrated in the Digital Cockpit: •ActiveCruiseControl•Cruisecontrolsystem•Speedlimiter•FrontAssist(frontassistmonitoringsystem)•NightVision(nightvisionsystem)•DriverAlertSystem•DynamicRoadSignDisplay•Tyremonitoringsystem•Navigationfunction•Offroaddisplay(includingslopeangle)•Selectorleverdisplay(alwaysondisplay, butatdifferent positions depending on the layout) •Speed(alwaysondisplay, butatdifferentpositions depending on the layout) •Fuelconsumption•Drivingrange•Distancecovered•Informationfordestinationarrival•Acceleration•Altitude(topographic)•Compass•Audiofunctions

head-updisplayindetail

The information offered by the Touareg’s head-up display is projected directly on to the windscreen. The display is in the direct field of vision of the driver. The head-up display has a virtual screen size of 217 x 88 mm making it the largest display of this type offered by Volkswagen to date. The driver can vary the range of information provided. The following information can be shown: •Currentspeed•DynamicRoadSignDisplay•Warningsigns(e.g.exceedingthepermittedspeed)

•Speedlimiter•Roadjunctiondetailedmap•Navigationinformation•Automaticdistancecontrol(ACC)•Cruisecontrolsystem•LaneAssist•SideAssist(lanechangeassistant)

PersonalisationPersonal settings – including those for the Innovision Cockpit and the Head-up Display – are saved and automatically called up using the personal vehicle key. This is particularly handy when the Touareg has been driven via another key by colleagues or family members.

Alternatively the settings can be activated when starting the car using a menu that opens automatically. A total of seven profiles, for different drivers, can be saved.

discoverNavigationPro(standardnavigationsystem)Discover Navigation Pro is the standard-fit system in new Touareg – excluding R-Line Tech. The glass-covered TFT touchscreen measures 9.2 inches. As with Discover Premium, Discover Navigation Pro also has a proximity sensor system and gesture control, a usable 10GB of memory, two SD card slots as well as a Bluetooth mobile phone interface. Smartphones can also be integrated and charged via two USB ports. Soundsystems The new Touareg is fitted with an 80W power amplifier that is integrated in the central computer of the infotainment system. The sound is transmitted via four treble loud-speakers (two in the A-pillars, two in the front door panel) each with a 65 mm diameter, as well as four 200 mm bass loudspeakers in the front and back doors.

As an option there is a high-end sound system that was specifically tailored for use in the new Touareg by Danish audio specialists Dynaudio. This uses a Dolby 7.1 power amplifier with a power of 730W to drive a total of 14 loudspeakers - four treble speakers in the A-pillars and the front door panel (each with a diameter of 65 mm), two mid-range loudspeakers in the front doors (each 100 mm) and four mid-range loudspeakers in the rear doors (each 200 mm), two loudspeakers in the D-pillars (each 100 mm), a centre speaker in the dash panel as well as a subwoofer under the luggage compartment floor.

Volkswagen will initially offer the new Touareg with efficient and refined V6 turbocharged engines, all of 3.0-litre capacity. They are all designed to facilitate towing maximum trailer weights of 3.5 tonnes (braked up to a gradient of twelve percent).

In the UK there will be two V6 turbo diesel (TDI) engines available: a 231 PS unit and, at launch, a higher powered 286 PS version. Each meets EU6 AG emissions regulations. A 340 PS V6 petrol (TSI) engine will follow in 2019.

The 231 PS V6 TDI – available to order in the UK later in 2018 – generates maximum torque of 500 Nm; while the 286 PS V6 TDI offers up to 600 Nm. The V6 TSI, meanwhile, will generate up to 450 Nm.

This range of performance and torque guarantees the highest maximum trailer weights in the segment.

In addition, a plug-in hybrid drive with a system power of 367 PS is planned for China. The exact launch date of the Touareg with plug-in hybrid drive in Europe has yet to be set.

The first Touareg engine offered for sale in the UK is the V6 TDI with 286 PS. Allied to the 4MOTION all-wheel drive system as standard, it carries the 2,070 kg car to 62 mph in 6.2 seconds, and on to a top speed of 146 mph.

The 286 PS 3.0-litre V6 TDI offers 42.8 mpg on the combined cycle, with a CO2 value of 173 g/km (NEDC derived under WLTP). The driving performances and consumption values of the other Touareg versions will follow in due course.

All-wheeldrive4MOTIONThe new third generation of Touareg is also equipped with permanent all-wheel drive (4MOTION) as standard. The all-wheel drive is coupled with an eight-speed automatic gearbox featuring ‘shift by wire’ technology that can transmit drive torque of up to 1,000 Nm.

A centre differential lock with asymmetric dynamic torque distribution acts as a transfer box for the flow of forces between the front and rear axles. A maximum of 70 percent of the drive force reaches the front axle, and up to 80 percent can be sent to the rear axle.

Today’s Touareg is equipped with 4MOTION Active Control with Driving Profile Selection. The system features driving mode selection in the centre console. The driver uses it to activate four higher-level modes and different pop-up menus. With Driving Profile Selection, if the driver turns the round switch to the left the road profile is accessed. If the switch is turned to the right, the off-road profile opens.

4MOTION Active Control can be used to adapt all relevant assist systems to the drive situation in seconds. Here the driver can individually control parameters for the automatic gearbox, the automatic air conditioning, the steering system, the different assist systems, the optional air suspension as well as the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and the response behaviour of the engine.

Driving Profile Selection offers five standard and five optional driving profiles (in association with the optional Offroad Pack), selected via either a corresponding menu in the infotainment system and/or the 4MOTION Active Control.

OffroadPackIn parallel with the various off-road specific driving profiles this pack also includes two towing eyes, a fuel tank increase from 75 to 90 litres as well as an underseal system with radiator grille, a reinforced underbody guard, a protective part for the 12V battery, particularly robust aerodynamic fairings as well as a tank guard and a stone deflector.

TowingThe new Touareg is one of the few passenger cars designed for maximum trailer weights up to 3.5 tonne (braked, up to twelve percent incline). Like its predecessor, a high percentage of these cars are expected to be configured and ordered with a tow ball.

The tow hitch in this car is newly developed and now offers a maximum level of comfort as the ball neck of the towing bracket is electrically retracted out and extended from the underbody via a simple press of a button. Thanks to the new system, too, bicycle carriers for up to four bikes can now be mounted safely.

RunninggearThe new car’s running gear has been newly developed to further enhance comfort and dynamic properties.

Volkswagen is once again offering optional air suspension with electronic damping control for the Touareg. It has been significantly enhanced and now features for the first time active roll compensation with electromechanical adjustable anti-roll bars.

An all-wheel steering system makes this large SUV, in many respects, as agile and manoeuvrable as a compact SUV like the Tiguan. Generally five-link suspensions with a light aluminium/steel design are used.

An overview of the individual elements shows where aluminium is used for the axles:

The front axle consists of the following:•Shockabsorber(dualtubeshockabsorber)•Steelsprings(withlinearcharacteristics)•Suspensionstruts(aluminium-castconstruction)•Balljointsandtransverselink/wheelbearinghousing•Connectingrod,toplevel(aluminium-forgedconstruction)•Wheelbearinghousing(aluminium-forgedconstruction)•Couplingrods(aluminiumhousingwithrubber-metal bearings)•Guidelink(aluminium-forgedconstruction)•Crossbraceinsteel(withboltedsubframe)•Trackcontrollink(aluminium-forgedconstruction)•Anti-rollbar

The rear axle consists of the following:•Topandbottomtransverselink(steelconstruction;designed as aluminium-forged construction in the case of air suspension running gear and all-wheel steering system)•Shockabsorber(dualtubeshockabsorber)•Steelsprings(withlinearcharacteristics)•Trackguide(steelconstruction)•Couplingrods(aluminium-extrusions)•Sub-frame(steelconstruction)•Springlink(aluminium-extrusions)•Aerodynamictrim(attachedtospringlink)•Hubcarrier(aluminium-castframe)•Anti-rollbar

ActiverollcompensationThe adaptive roll compensation is a new development, referred to by Volkswagen as “electromechanical active roll stabilisation” (eAWS) due to its structure and design.

The two most important components of the eAWS system are the anti-roll bars at the front and rear axle.

Conventional running gear features a steel anti-roll bar at the front and rear that stretches from one axle side to the other. The two sides of the anti-roll bar twist against each other when the vehicle corners, (or when driving over larger bumps with only one side of the vehicle). The kinematics cause the roll angle of the car to be reduced on curves. However, this effect is enhanced the active roll stabilisation of eAWS.

To extend the limits of driving physics, the Touareg equipped with eAWS has electromechanical anti-roll bars at the front and rear axle. A central control unit coordinates their use. The two sides of the relevant anti-roll bar are connected to each other via a control motor. Depending on the driving situation, the two halves of the anti-roll bar are either twisted against each other (stiffened) or decoupled, using an electric motor. The relatively high voltage of 48V to activate the powerful electric motors is briefly created using so-called “Super Cabs” (capacity accumulators).

The lateral inclination of the Touareg is significantly reduced in bends due to the active anti-roll bars. Directional stability is also increased on roads where one side is uneven. On rough

terrain the interlacing of the axles and, therefore, the traction available can also be improved due to the electromechanical decoupling of the anti-roll bars.

All-wheelsteeringsystemAnother innovation in new Touareg is the optional all-wheel steering system, which aids agility significantly.

Essentially, it affects two driving states: speeds below 23 mph and speeds over 23 mph.

Up to 23 mph, the rear wheels turn automatically at an opposing angle to the front wheels. This means agility is improved, particularly when manoeuvring. Indeed, the Touareg’s turning circle is reduced by one full metre from 12.19 m to 11.19 m with all-wheel steering. For reference, the turn circle of today’s Golf is 10.9 m.

If the speed increases to more than 23 mph, the rear wheels automatically turn in the same direction when steering in the same way as the front wheels. As a result, the driving behaviour is significantly smoother as the all-wheel steering for instance stabilises a lane change when overtaking quickly. The same applies for sudden evasive manoeuvres.

AirsuspensionThe new generation air suspension not only enhances comfort, but also aerodynamics and the ability to cross rough terrain. The new open air suspension system operates quickly

and silently and is insensitive to temperature and outside pressure fluctuations (such as at high altitude in the mountains).

The air suspension operates at the “Normal level” or “Comfort level” as standard. In addition, a “Terrain level” increasing ride height by 25 mm and a “Special terrain level” by 70 mm are also available.

At speeds from 74 mph, the running gear is automatically lowered by 15 to 25 mm using the air suspension to reduce air resistance and adjust the Touareg’s dynamic driving behaviour.

Last but not least, there is a “Load level” (40 mm lower than standard) to help facilitate loading and unloading the luggage compartment.

Air suspension optimises the off-road driving experience, too. Off-road parameters change depending on the suspension. So while the maximum climbing capability (60 percent) and transverse gradient (35 degrees) are identical with steel and air suspension, the front and rear ramp angle increases with air suspension from 25 to 31 degrees.

The breakover angle also increases significantly: from 18.5 to 25 degrees. As the ground clearance can be increased with air suspension, the maximum wading depth also increases (from 490 mm to 570 mm). The manually adjustable level of the air suspension is activated using rotary push button switches in the centre console.

The new Touareg is one of the safest and most comfortable cars in the world. Its broad range of its driver assist system contributes to this.

The car is packed with innovative new systems, or developments of existing Volkswagen assistance systems all designed to support safety and ease of use.

Traffic Jam Assist including Roadwork Lane Assist, for instance, now allows for partly automated driving functions, within system limits. New Touareg also debuts Night Vision for the first time in a Volkswagen.

NightVision: The new Touareg is the first Volkswagen available with a night vision system. A thermal image camera (infrared camera) registers infrared radiation coming from a living being. People or animals detected are marked yellow or red, depending on the risk, in a black and white image, shown on the Digital Cockpit screen.

If Night Vision registers a risk it actively warns the driver via information in the Digital Cockpit and optional head-up display. At the same time the brakes and the Brake Assist system are preconditioned to provide the best available braking, if required.

Thanks to the optional new, interactive IQ.Light – LED headlights, people in a potential danger area are briefly flashed to make them more visible for the driver, and as a warning. This spotlight function is exclusively offered in conjunction with Night Vision. Thus, with the combination of Night Vision and IQ.Light – LED matrix headlights, dangerous situations can not only be recognised significantly earlier but also alleviated.

FrontCrossTrafficAssist: The new Front Cross Traffic Assist is an enhancement of the familiar Rear Traffic Alert. Today, Rear Traffic Alert already gives warnings when a Volkswagen is being backed out a parking space and a car approaches at a 90° angle behind the reversing car. This is a familiar risk when driving out of a parking space that is arranged at right angles to the road.

The system becomes active via an emergency brake intervention if the driver does not respond themselves when the risk is detected.

The new Front Cross Traffic Assist debuting in Touareg now also warns of vehicles that approach the vehicle’s front end at junctions, exits or in parking spaces. Two radar sensors are integrated in the front bumper with an alignment of 55 degrees to the vehicle axis. These monitor traffic from the side.

An emergency brake intervention in triggered when the Touareg detects a danger and the driver does not respond. The intended outcome, within system limits, is to prevent an accident as far as technically possible or at least to reduce the severity of the collision.

ProactiveOccupantProtectionSystem: This is also upgraded and updated for new Touareg. It combines all pre-crash functions, and now detects even more types of accidents.

It works as follows: if the Proactive Occupant Protection System registers a potential accident situation, such as when severe braking is applied, or Brake Assist is triggered, the seat belts for the driver and passenger are automatically pre-tensioned and the electric seat functions are adjusted so that the best possible protection is achieved by the airbag and seat belt systems.

If there is a critically unstable driving situation such as oversteering or understeering with ESC intervention, the side windows and panorama sliding roof are also almost closed (up to a pre-defined gap) to ensure the head and side airbags can provide optimum support and have the best possible

effect. The automatic door lock and hazard warning lights are also activated.

TrafficJamAssistincludingRoadworkLaneAssist: The Touareg is being launched with the optional Driver Assistance Pack in the UK. This consists of the Traffic Jam Assist including Roadwork Lane Assist; Lane Assist lane departure warning system; Adaptive Cruise Control ACC (with stop-and-go function); Emergency Assist; the new Front Cross Traffic Assist; Side Assist lane departure warning with Rear Traffic Alert as well as the Proactive occupant protection system.

As a result of the carefully engineered fusion of different systems, the Traffic Jam Assist including Roadwork Lane Assist automatically takes over the longitudinal and lateral control (brakes, acceleration, steering) at speeds up to 37 mph, when the steering wheel is released and always within system limits.

TrailerAssist: This system allows the driver to forget the counter-intuitive skills traditionally associated with reversing a trailer - having to turn the steering wheel to the left so that trailer turns to the right (and vice versa). The car now takes the strain.

FrontCrossTrafficAssist

29

The following components and assistance systems are combined to deliver the functions of Trailer Assist: ParkAssist. The Park Assist system uses ultrasound sensors in the area of the front and rear side as well as sensors in the wheels to measure the parking space. A control unit gives the steering system precise commands relating to how the car is to be directed into the parking space. If a trailer is coupled, the control unit changes to its Trailer Assist mode and provides the steering system with appropriate information about which direction it must go in order to perfectly direct the trailer. RearView. As an electronic eye, the rear view camera system is focused on the tow bar of the trailer. It views the tow bar as a kind of ‘compass needle’ and, in this way, the camera recognises the current angle of the trailer relative to the rear of the car. The control unit converts this angle into the current steering angle of the trailer. Mirrorsetting. The rotary knob of the electric adjustment of exterior mirrors on the driver’s side acts as a multi-function joystick with which the articulation angle of the trailer is determined.

digitalCockpit. The multi-function display between the speedometer and rev counter or, full Digital Cockpit if specified, displays which trailer articulation angle is set when Trailer Assist is activated. electromechanicalpowersteering. The necessary steering angle can be automatically adjusted by the car, using its electromechanical power steering.

To manoeuvre a car and trailer in reverse using Trailer Assist, the Touareg driver stops behind the bay required for the trailer and selects reverse gear. The system is activated by pressing the Park Assist button.

At this point the mirror adjustment switch is displayed on the display. As soon as the switch is moved, a symbol with ‘trailer’ appears on the display. The current articulation angle, and the articulation angle of the trailer set by the driver, are displayed. With the aid of the external mirror switch, the driver sets the desired direction of travel of his car and trailer. Trailer Assist then takes over the steering. The car and trailer is automatically aligned using the Park Assist control unit and via the electromechanical power steering.

Post-collisionBrakingSystem: Around 25 percent of all accidents with personal injury are collisions that take place after the first accident. Such secondary collisions can be prevented entirely, or their severity reduced, via Volkswagen’s Post-collision Braking System.

After a collision, and within system limits, the Touareg automatically brakes before the driver can respond.

The second generation of this system is now used in the Touareg and it sees braking now taking place until the vehicle is at a standstill. At the same time the preventive safety measures in the Proactive Occupant Protection System are activated. In addition the intensity of stabilising braking is increased up to 1g.

Lightingsystems

For the third Touareg generation, one of the world’s most advanced headlight systems was developed together with German supplier HELLA – it is known as IQ.Light LED matrix head-light and is optional on today’s Touareg.

This impressive interactive light control makes night driving both more comfortable and more safe. Volkswagen’s designers and engineers, together with the team from HELLA, succeeded in successfully integrating the LED light system within a three dimensional design consisting of the headlights, daytime running lights, indicator and cornering light. The result is a seamless integration into the stylish and charismatic front end of the Touareg to deliver great looks by day and a distinctive nightime light design.

128Ledsperheadlight. The LED headlights use a matrix made of light spots – individual LEDs that can be activated as required. The matrix of the dipped beam is made up of a printed circuit with 48 LEDs, while the circuit board of the main beam is fitted with 27 LEDs.

The LEDs in the dipped and main beam module are arranged similar to a chessboard. There are various other individual LEDs in addition to the total of 75 used in each headlight’s dipped and main beams.

Including the surround lighting as well as the so-called signal functions (daytime running light, elevated side light and animated ‘flowing’ turn signal), there are a total of 128 LEDs per headlight.

The Touareg therefore uses the considerable lighting power of a total of 256 LEDs in the various segments of the left and right headlights to make night driving safer for all.

Intelligentlightfunctions

Various intelligent light functions are activated using the 75 LEDs of the dipped and main beam, as well as seven front end LEDs (in five reflection chambers) and three cornering light LEDs.

A linked computer uses the signals from the front camera, the digital card data of the navigation system, the car’s GPS signals, the steering wheel angle as well as the current speed to precisely activate individual LEDS for the best light in a split second.

The driver switches on the main beam headlight via Dynamic Light Assist. The Touareg manages the rest itself: dimmed, turned up, city lighting, optimum motorway light or off-road light.

As the new matrix headlights operate with the highest light output, people, objects, other vehicles and animals are made visible that would otherwise be less easily seen with conventional headlight systems.

The increase in light output and optimised illumination is clearly noticeable. In fact a comparison between the very good xenon headlights of the previous model, and the new Touareg LED system, results in a range increase of more than 100 metres when the IQ.Light – LED matrix headlights’ main beam is active.

31

The interactive headlights operate in a way somewhat similar to those in a car with an autonomous driving mode. For example, the front camera registers brightly illuminated areas as “residential”. In this case the Touareg automatically switches from main to dipped beam.

Using the digital card data and GPS signals from the navigation system, the Touareg with IQ.Light – LED matrix headlights also recognises a change from right-hand to left-hand traffic.

If a trip starts at Dover and ends in Calais, the system automatically adapts the light distribution when the French mainland is reached.

detailsofthelightfunctionsoftheIQ.Light–Led matrixheadlight:

City lighting: A particularly wide light beam with a focus on the sides; active up to 31 mph

dippedheadlight: Dipped beam with wide light distribution in the direction of the kerb

Sidelight: Permanent main beam on country roads without blinding other road users

Motorwaydippedbeam: Narrower light beam focused on a wide reach for high speeds

Motorwaylight: Narrower light beam focused on a wide reach for high speeds if no other road users are dazzled

Overtakinglight: Precise main beam for overtaking procedures without blinding road users. The system recognises that the Touareg pulls out to the side. This side area is now illuminated more intensely

Mainbeam: Manually activated main beam to deliberately use all 75 LEDs of the headlight for maximum illumination. In contrast to the motorway light, the light beam is wider

Poorweatherlight: Reduces glare for the driver and other road users on wet roads. It is activated when the rain sensor detects rainfall. The annoying reflections of the headlight on the wet, reflective road surface directly in front of the driver are reduced by the IQ.Light reducing illumination intensity in this area

Signglarecontrol: Precise suppression of the main beam on signs so that the reflected light of the headlight does not blind the driver

Offroadlight: A particularly powerful dipped beam focused on width to be able to recognise obstacles.

Spotlight(forNightVision): Focused illumination of people detected by the optional Night Vision system (infrared camera) without dazzling to make them easier to see for the driver

LED technology is also used for the tail light clusters. The LED contours give the rear of the Touareg a distinctive night light signature.

The car’s brake lights are obviously prominently visible in daytime and at night, and are equipped with an optional signal effect: the brake light has a distinctive changeover when the brake pedal is pressed to deliver a click-click effect. The rear indicators also have an animated ‘flowing’ design.

ServicingVolkswagen offers customers a choice of servicing regime for their Touareg. They can choose Fixed Service or Flexible Service and the appropriate selection is entirely dependent on how the car is likely to be driven and its general use.

The Fixed Service regime is recommended for vehicles that will cover less than 10,000 miles in 12 months and if the vehicle is likely to be used in the following way:•Predominantlyurbandriving, shortjourneyswithfrequent cold starts•Activitiesregularlyproducinghighengineloading, for example frequent hill climbs, driving with vehicle fully loaded and towing•Drivingwithhighrpm, hardaccelerationandheavybraking. In this case, the vehicle will be serviced at regular intervals, at every 10,000 miles or every 12 months

Flexible Service is recommended for vehicles with a daily mileage of more than 25 miles, where the vehicle is driven regularly and on mainly longer distance journeys. The vehicle should be mainly driven at a constant speed with minimum vehicle and engine loading, minimal towing and driven in an economical manner.

In this case, the on-board computer informs the driver via a dashboard display, when the vehicle needs a service. A range of engine sensors electronically monitors the vehicle’s oil temperature, oil pressure, oil level and brake pad wear to establish when a service is needed.

With the Flexible regime, the vehicle can cover typically between 10,000 and 20,000 miles (approx) or 24 months (whichever is sooner) between oil changes. An inspection service is typically due in the third year of ownership or at 40,000 miles and thereafter every second year for vehicles with an annual mileage of around 10,000 miles.

Customers can choose between Fixed and Flexible at PDI (pre-delivery inspection) and though it is possible to change from one to another during the vehicle’s lifetime it can only be done when a full inspection service is due.

WarrantyThe Touareg, like all current Volkswagen passenger car models, has a three-year (first- and second-year manufacturer operated, third-year retailer-operated) / 60,000-mile mechanical warranty. In addition, it comes with a 12-year body protection guarantee, three year paint warranty and a year’s membership of Volkswagen Assistance which includes European breakdown cover. The latter can be extended at minimal cost to the customer.

Technical specification.

SEL, R-Line, R-Line Tech01) The maximum power output figures are quoted in PS (or Pferdestärke, which is the metric equivalent of

horsepower). To convert from metric to imperial horsepower, divide the PS figure by 1.0139.

02) Figures are calculated in accordance with manufacturer’s criteria. The individual unladen weight depends on

the specification of the vehicle, this then reduces the possible payload accordingly. The unladen weight and

payload both include the fuel tank 90% full, driver (68kg) and luggage (7kg) in line with EU directive 95/48.

03) With increasing altitude the engine performance diminishes. From 1,000m above sea level and for

every 1,000m thereafter 10% of the vehicle/trailer weight (trailer weight + gross vehicle weight) must

be deducted.

04) The use of 100% RME and FAME (bio diesel) is not possible. Forecourt diesel with up to 7% bio diesel

content, adhering to standard BS EN 590, can be used in diesel engines. The use of ethanol in forecourt

petrol meeting BS EN 228 is allowable.

05) The size of the fuel tank is approximate and therefore it may be possible to add a greater amount of fuel

than the size of the tank specified, due to the space in the filler neck.

06) This model is a WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) type approved vehicle.

More information is available at volkswagen.co.uk/owners/wltp. However, in line with Government

guidance, to facilitate direct comparison between different models from different manufacturers and to

accommodate the full transition to this new testing regime, we have displayed the NEDC figures. These

NEDC figures are the values for this vehicle used in all registration and taxation documentation until further

notice from the UK authorities. Fuel consumption and efficiency figures are provided for comparative

purposes only and may not reflect ‘real world’ driving results. The weight of a vehicle will influence the

level of CO2 emissions it produces; as a result, vehicles with higher levels of specification and factory-fitted

options may emit higher levels of CO2. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas responsible for global warming.
