Commodore’s Comments

F all is in the air and you can feel the subtle changes as Mother Nature

dawns her autumn colors. It even feels like football and Beacon Rock. For Joanie and I, this is a favorite time of year not only for the weather but also the many club events that occur in late summer. Members have returned from summer cruises and have been treated to a variety of events.

Club Activities The Classic Car & Vintage Boat Cruise-in and Cookout was a tremendous suc-cess and drew a capacity crowd. Joe & Penny Spaziani organized displays of the classics that are generally hidden in members’ garages. Brian & Donna Moore organized the inclusion of Longview Yacht Club members as our special guests for their continuing gen-erosity and hospitality to our members. Longview has routinely welcomed all PYC cruisers with moorage and club access as PYC transits the lower Co-lumbia River. They have also hosted PYC for overnight stays on the Down-river Cruise for the last two years. I certainly appreciate the special effort many members made to make them feel welcome. During September, we feasted upon the elusive wild oncorhynchus. Don Dell, Ken Emmons and Gary & Marilyn Er-dahl were good enough to let enough salmon escape for the commercial fish-erman to supply PYC with a feast for 120. Bill Lee, Jim Johnson, Joe Brady and Nancy Zetlmaier grilled up what was left of the fall run for the rest of us. We have also been cruising. In addi-tion to trips to northern waters and various river locations, thirty PYC boats gathered at the outstation over Labor Day and were treated to a great late summer cruise “Under the Oregon Sun”. The Sudlow’s, Cirotski’s, Moore’s, and Bishop’s organized the

event and gave the pavilion an appro-priate Tuscan harvest look. The fleet included 4 sailboats over 40’ and Vic Alfonso’s 58’ “Jaks V” that successfully negotiated the minus tides and lowest water of the year as they passed in and out of Willow Bar. Skippers were able to make use of a river height prediction website that is now included under “favorites” on the clubhouse computer located in the George Kelly Bar.

Outstation The Labor Day Cruise reminds us of the ongoing silting of one of our favor-ite destinations. Phil Gentemann is currently swimming upstream against the bureaucratic current for renewal of our dredging permit. The Board will very shortly be considering alternative proposals and whether work should be done in the 2010-11 or 2011-12 winter work windows. I will certainly provide more information on our timing and sufficiency of accrued funding as the Board formulates a plan.

PYC Moorage Upgrade Our 2010 project list also includes the replacement of an additional marginal walk with new concrete dock. Interim Project Manager Eric Gazow and his committee expect delivery of 410’ of walkway during October. Component pieces will be assembled and installed by PYC volunteers. The displaced ex-isting wood walkway will be used to replace deteriorated headwalk sections at other moorage locations. This repre-sents a lot of work so I hope you will consider helping when the time occurs. Even as the summer wanes, there are still many events and activities going on around the club and on the river. CRYA Closing Day Weekend is sched-uled for October 1-3 at Dolphin Yacht Club. This is a fun-filled weekend with numerous activities and events. All members are invited to attend by boat or by car and participate. Please also watch for the Hobby Night Cookout and the New Member Cookout on Oc-tober 8th & 22nd. The PYC Grand Prix is scheduled for October 9th & 10th, and our last Weekender this year

Manager’s Report

I hope that you had a good season on the water this summer. It is now the transi-

tion into our fall and winter seasons. Believe it or not, our social season is much busier at this time of year. I hope that I see you taking advantage of our seasonal events. Watch the Portlight for all of the details.

Moorage Upgrade We will be extending the marginal walk eastward this month. It is our plan to replace the dock all of the way to A-row with concrete before beginning the individual rows. We will also be replac-ing I-row with some of the wooden marginal walk as well. I-row is the row most in need of replacement at this time.

D-row Power For our members on D-row, your power boxes should be updated by the time you read this. The club is taking over the power on D-row from Pacific Power. That means that your power will be charged on your monthly state-ment instead of to Pacific Power. It has been needed for some time to get this transferred to us so that we can maintain it. Thanks for your patience.

M any hands made light work at the Salmon Barbecue on September 12, which was

attended by well over a hundred club members. Perfect early fall weather helped to make the evening memora-ble, as many diners moved out on the deck after dinner to watch the sunset. The salmon, corn on the cob (on sticks, for easy eating!), green salad and apple

crisp with ice cream were expertly pre-pared by cooks Bill Lee, Jim and Kelly Johnson, Nick Johnson, Joe Brady and Nancy Zetlmaier. After the social hour, dinner was served at 5:00 by a crew that included Cheri Tuma, Becky Butler, Bo and Sydney Knab, Bill and Marcia Hoelscher, Julie Hinkley, Kim Lee, Teresa Erickson and Joanie Johnson. Place cards featuring salmon cutouts were made by Susan Dorn, and Ruth Parr helped with sign-in.

Coon Island Weekender Cruise

N aturally, for those of you that attended some of the 2010 weekender cruises, this sum-

mary of the Coon Island cruise should come as nothing out of the ordinary. For those of you that didn’t make it on these cruises, hopefully this summary will highlight what you’ve been missing. As the first to arrive Friday afternoon at the eastern Coon Island docks, things were very quiet. However, that was changed when Paul Allen and his yacht, Octopus, showed up around 4 pm to start the weekend. On Octopus were the Portland Trailblazer Cheer-leaders, Paul McCartney and his band, Tiger Woods, Donald Trump and the cast of Bravo’s new show, The House-wives of Portland. For happy hour, Paul McCartney started with a nicely played rendition of

Band on the Run and then kicked into Back in the USSR. Bob and Elaine Sudlow were seen dancing on the docks once they got the Big Easy repaired so that they could make the trip. Tiger was at the end of the dock seeing if he could hit a 9 iron from there to the West Dock where Tyee Yacht club was holding a small event. Donald Trump was walking around the island to see if he could develop a twenty story high-end condo complex. Sig and the Northwestern crew from Deadliest Catch came by to provide fresh Alaska King Crab for Friday night’s dinner. In the morning, calisthenics were led by the Trailblazer Cheerleaders. This was made a bit more difficult as we all were a bit slow to get moving due to the 2005 Penfolds Grange we each had the night before thanks to raiding Paul’s wine cellar on Octopus. After we all feasted on a great Cajun breakfast pro-vided by the Cirotski’s good friend, Emeril Lagasse, it was time to attend to the various boat problems we all

seemed to have. Thanks to Paul Al-len’s mechanics who pulled all our boats up on his deck to work on the problems, we were all ship shape and ready to go. Saturday night we were joined by Bill and Cornie Stevens and a showing of Avatar on the large outside screen erected on the docks. Marvin and Kathy Ankele along with Wiley and Sue Lusk decided they’d head to Mark’s on the Channel for dinner which was made easier by taking the helicopter provided by Octopus. Those that did-n’t get a helicopter ride did it the next morning for breakfast at Mark’s. By Sunday afternoon, it was time to begin the slow cruise back to reality. Now all of you know what you’ve been missing so don’t forget to join us on the next weekender at East Dock Octo-ber 15-17.

The meeting will also review the highlights of a successful year and look forward to plans for 2011. This year District 5 membership reached 54 and is building momentum. A variety of activities offered a little bit

of everything to members, from the Spring Social at Columbia River Yacht Club, to the clean up at Hadley’s Land-ing, to the joint event with District 1 at Clover Island Yacht Club in Kenne-wick, to the successful June Regional Meeting of the International officers and members held at PYC. District 5 also fulfilled its humanitarian goal with donations to the Sea Scouts and

T he weatherman is wrong---Again! And we are the win-ners. A near perfect Labor

Day weekend, which for more than half the boats began on Thursday. It is amazing what a perfect (80 degrees) forecast can do. But instead of clouds and drizzle, Monday was the best day of all: sunny and mid-70s all day. This made the wait for high tide very pleas-ant. Twenty-eight boats, and about 60 people made the voyage. In spite of the low water and minus tide, the outstation continues to enjoy a minimum five feet of water. Sail and powerboats who observed the channel markers had no difficulty entering or departing. Looking into the future though, dredging and restoration of the banks will become necessary. It is a good thing we've set aside funds for this. What a great committee we had this weekend! The Saturday night dinner of Tuscan Flank Steak, Orzo salad, the sweetest Oregon corn, Caesar salad, Italian bread, and Tiramisu, was large enough to feed an army of centuri-ons. Potluck breakfast on Saturday and dinner on Sunday brought out the cruiser's finest. The creativity and vari-ety is amazing. A squad of five bicycle riders set out to explore the island on Sunday morn-ing. Cool morning air and minimal traffic made this a great experi-ence. Now if we can only do this more

often---the waistline would really ap-preciate it. You should bring a bike out and give it a go! Our 116,000 BTU grill will be stored at the outstation now, locked down, to only be used on the large holiday cruises. The smaller grill can take care of smaller grilling tasks. Our tremendous thanks go to the La-bor Day Cruise Committee: Bob & Elaine Sudlow, Dale & Laura Mack, Bob and Caroline Bishop, Dave and Franci Stuckey, Donna and Brian Moore . Dockmaster : Dave

Stuckey. Special thanks to Deanne Jones (clubhouse crew), who prepared Giada De Laurentiis' Tuscan Orzo Salad perfectly---to the raves of our cruisers.

Classic Car and Vintage Boat Cookout The PYC annual Classic Car and Vin-tage Boat Cruise-In was a great success again this year and a big thank you to those thirty plus that brought their cars and boats for all of us to enjoy. Once again the weather was perfect for our event and we had a large member turn out. We would like to give a big round of applause to our Beermeister Tom Kerns, parking attendant Frank Tillman and help with decorations An-nie Salter. We couldn’t have done it without them or you attending this event. Thanks Again

N ew additions to the PYC li-brary include nineteen yacht-ing books donated by Bill and

Cornie Stevens, and seven books do-nated by Al and Ruth Parr. Thank you all. I’m also happy to report that we’re out-growing our library shelves. Take a look at the space and let us know if you have compatible spare shelves you’d like to donate. (Next to the boardroom upstairs at PYC, and also next to the shower room in the basement.)

This is an honor system library. You are welcome to borrow books or read them here. Each volume has a card on

which you can sign your name, PYC membership num-ber, and date you borrowed the book. Please re-turn the book(s) within two weeks. There will be a box on or near the

book shelves where you can put the card. When you return the book, re-place the card and re-shelve the book.

(There is no resident librarian.) The circulating library that is located in the basement does not have cards or checkouts. Please read and return. Do-nations are appreciated by all. We will acknowledge all donations. Please leave your name so we can thank you. Thanks to the House and Grounds Committee, the History Committee, and all the other members who have helped with this project.
