Commodore's Comments

First, I would like to recognize our Club staff for their excellent prepara-tion and recovery of our Club following Hurricane Matthew. While many in our area were impacted, I think we all know it could have been far worse and we are very fortunate. Our staff worked tirelessly the Wednesday before the storm and Saturday afterwards, and we were back in action at the Harbor Grill for lunch on Sunday. Thanks especially to Dave Meredith, Kenny Kooyenga, Milos Vasovic and their support teams for handling all of the outdoor furniture, docks, and tennis facili-ties. I’ve never seen so much stuff piled up inside the Harbor Grill and main clubhouse for safekeeping.

Now that we are into November, I would like to mention we are starting the nomination process for next year’s Board of Governors. While a

large commitment in terms of time, I have found my tenure on the board to be very satisfy-ing in terms of continually building on what we have to offer our membership, and securing the long-term future of our Club. I would encourage resident members who share these goals and especially those who have served on Club committees, to consider running for the Board. If you are interested, please let one of our current Governors know, or contact Past Commodore Michael Cerow whom I have asked to chair this year’s nomination committee.

The Holiday season is upon us and there are so many upcoming Club events that it is hard to choose what to highlight. So I will just mention some of my favorites like the New Member Mixer on Nov 5th which is the best opportunity to meet and mingle with all of our new members who have joined over the past year, then our Thanksgiving Dinner on the 24th, and our most elegant Anniversary Ball and Holiday Party on December 3rd.

I hope to see you around the Club,

Jonathan Reed, Commodore

[email protected]

Dear Members & Guests,The big news this month turned out to be not so big! We escaped a direct hit from Hur-ricane Matthew with relatively minor dam-age. Like many of you, we had some landscape loss and clean up. We also had some fencing, soffit and dock damage that we are working through at this writing. The tough part, as is often the case after a storm, is getting con-tractors lined up for repairs!I do want to thank all of you for your pa-tience and understanding while the staff went through the steps of preparation and recovery/clean up. I hope you will also join me in thanking them for their efforts to pro-tect your Club.Since the storm the weather has thankfully become more seasonal. Love it! We can now look forward to more comfortable outdoor pursuits. The Dining Terrace off of the West Lounge is now officially ready for business! When making reservations, please let us know if you would like to be seated outside and we'll do our best to accommodate you. And plan to join your friends at the firetables for coffee or an after dinner drink - it's gor-geous under the stars! The next two months can be very hectic for many with holiday gatherings and entertain-ing. Be sure to let us know if there is any-thing your Club can do to make your events, here or at your home, more enjoyable for you. We can help you in a BIG way!And of course, November is the month of Thanksgiving. While we should always rec-ognize all we have to be thankful for, be sure to spend a little extra time this month to do so with your family and friends at your beau-tiful Club!Thank you and Happy Thanksgiving,

BobRobert P. Crissman, CCM General Manager

In a few more weeks it will be Thanksgiving! What are you thankful for? I challenge you to share your thankfulness with your family and friends! If you email me ten things you are thankful for, I will reply with a certificate for a complimentary bever-age, appetizer or dessert of your choice. With that being said,

don’t forget to make reservations between 12 pm – 4 pm for Thanksgiving, Thursday, No-vember 24th. We had over 85 people enjoy our fabulous Asian Family Dinner for October! Come enjoy our next Family Dinner; it will be November 13, 2016. We will have Spanish cuisine for the food and will be featuring some of the Spanish wines from the Torres Vineyards.I know many of you have been asking and are ready for our wine dinner! We will be having the wine dinner on November 16th at 6:30 pm. Featured this month are wines from New Zea-land and Australia. Our amazing Chef Lance Cook and his talented culinary team will pair mouthwatering food coursed with all the wines. Seats are limited to 50 people, reserve soon!We are planning to have a teen night out at the Harbor Grill within the next month or so. Please let your teens know and have them talk to me or send me any ideas they have on what they would enjoy for food and entertainment. This includes types of bands or DJs, and game ideas. The teens who submit ideas in writing to me will receive a complimentary beverage and appetizer or dessert of their choice! The more ideas the better!

He is now with Everbank as a Mortgage Loan Officer; Tracy is a Realtor at Dale Sorensen Real Estate in Indialantic and relocated here in 2008. She is the tennis star in the family and is passionate about court time and socializing with the many tennis players here! We are glad they joined us!

Membership Manifest

This November begins with us breathing a sigh of relief and thanks for all of us and the Club surviv-ing Hurricane Matthew’s visit in October. Some of us had minor damage but we were truly spared the harsh beating Matthew delivered farther to our north. We are excited to kick off November with our annual New Member Mixer on Saturday, November 5th, 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Always a great reception to meet and welcome our new members who joined over the last year. The evening includes Chef ’s amazing appetizer hors’ d’oeuvres, signature cocktails and mu-sical entertainment at the Dragon Point Bar and Main Dining Room! Make your reserva-tions now! This is always a festive event for all and complimentary for our newest members and their sponsors. We are thankful for so much in our lives. As you visit and create new memories with family, friends and business associates, remember to be thankful for everything we enjoy beachside and on the waterfront. Having the health and time to savor all we enjoy is important. With our cooler weather, now is the time to take a swing at tennis, kayak up to Mather’s Bridge, work-out at the fitness center as preparation to burn off that pumpkin pie, play a round of smash golf or 18 holes with our EGYC dis-count privileges at Viera’s Duran Golf Club, dine al fresco on the west Lounge, indulge by relaxing on the Terrace around the blazing fire pits; Make this the year you visit another Club in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs. This is a fantastic Club! Show your thankfulness by giving a 3-month Trial $600.00 Gift Certifi-cate to a new family or friend, for enjoyment through the holidays and into the New Year!

Blessings to your family this Thanksgiving season,

Micah Simpson, Membership Director

number. If you find it and it’s yours, you’ll be treated to a lunch for two at the Club!

paul & elizabeth Frommann Sponsors: Jack & Evelyn MartinMichael Figuero & Connie Brandt

“They look so familiar”…Yes, that is what happens when you meet Paul and Beth! Both have been here around our area since 1998. They made it official and joined

all the members they met along the way. You might recognize them from buying or selling a boat with Captain Paul through Yacht Pros or maybe you bought a house with Coldwell Banker Para-dise’s “Frommann Team”! As former owners and operators of Sea Tow Port Canaveral, they truly know and love the water. Paul and Beth have 2 grown children and 4 grandsons, whom they share their love of beachside life with. Laughter is always a great bi-product hanging out with this tropical couple for professional or social rendezvous! Ahoy and welcome aboard!

donald & yvonne zaremba Sponsors: Mrs. Gloria BlakeJeffrey & Kim Hefner

Up, up and away…from Orlando, the Zaremba family is aboard af-ter purchasing the late Dick and Gloria Blake’s 34 ft. vessel and now spending much needed time on “DAZ Off!” here at the Club. Don is a Southwest Pilot Captain with airports of call mostly internationally;

Yvonne will capture your attention with a great accent from across the pond, and daughter Rachel 15 years, and Victoria 9 years, are usually busy helping Dad with boat duties or enjoying pool-time. The family also enjoys running, skiing and of-course boating! We are glad they are aboard!

paul & Kristina dupre' Sponsors: P/C Benjamin & Carolyn SaxonP/C Stephen & Governor Lorraine Totty

Fun to talk with, active, and successful Melbourne business owners easily describes the Dupre’ family. They stay busy at their concrete repair business and are glad to scoot away for great dining and socializing here, at the Club.

The Dupre family often escape to boat here or out to other Florida areas or even further north for skiing, RV vacations and trips, golf, attending concerts and sporting events. The Dupre’s are often spotted relaxing with 18 yr. old daughter Shelbi and 21 yr. old son Zachary! Kristina is taking up tennis at the Club and we should see her on a ladies’ league soon if not already… This family is perfectly aboard at the EGYC!

Evening Colors / Boaters' Night

Recently EGYC has partnered with many seafaring groups to raise the level of exposure surrounding your Club and everything EGYC has to offer. Amongst those special events were the recent J 24 racing gathering co-sponsored by Melbourne Yacht club. With the quality of sailing that is just beyond Dragon Point it makes so much sense for the Yacht Club to support such great venues right here in our own backyard. A total of seventeen vessels were in attendance for the regional challenge which brought in vessels from all over the state of Florida. We will once again be hosting the ma-jor Mid Winter J-24 challenges scheduled for this February and promise to keep all posted as the event draws near. Also we were able to entertain the Sea Ray International dealer network here along the waterfront and for the first two days’ mother nature cooperated. Soon after the forecast of Hurricane Mathew had the later part of the event rescheduled for mid-November, once again we will keep all apprised of the rescheduled date.

Busy in October, with many more events scheduled...

On the Waterfront Waterfront ReportFlorida Council of Yacht Clubs

From the Director t Neal Johnson

This month’s article will highlight another one of our FCYC Member Clubs. The following is the Club History found on the website for the Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa.

The Davis Island Yacht Club is a private, member-owned yacht club situated at the south end of Davis Islands in Tampa, Florida. The Club grounds form a natural harbor and breakwater for our docks and a mooring area designated on charts as a seaplane basin.

The Club sponsors a heavy schedule of sailing races, an active cruising fleet and a strong youth sailing organization. It maintains continuing relationships with state and regional sailing organizations, is a founding member of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs, and is a Golden Anchor participant in the United States Sailing Association. It provides limited support for members representing the club in regional, nation-al and international sailing races. Members participate heavily in local and regional events sponsored by other organizations. An active women's sailing group, the Dinghy Dames, is part of the club.

Our facilities include wet and dry slips for our members' boats, a boathouse for small sailing craft: prams, dinghies and one-design boats, a marine railway, clubhouse and swimming pool. Our dining room and bar serve members, their guests and partici-pants in the numerous regattas and educational programs hosted by the club. Our social functions link festivities to sailing activities.

Our long-standing Thursday Night Races are open to any person wishing to sail and provides a good way for novices or newcomers to become better known to the mem-bership.

Please consider visiting Davis Island or one of the 34 other reciprocal clubs in the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs. It is just one of the benefits of membership at EGYC.

See you around the Club! P/C Neal E. Johnson, FCYC Director

Waterfront Recap “Hurricane Mathew”In the “Big Picture” we faired pretty well here at the EGYC waterfront. We did in fact suffer the loss of one vessel at the docks but considering we have in excess of 60 plus boats at our Club, the situation and degree of loss could have been far greater. On a similar note, the Club did incur a substantial amount of “dock damage” most of which is evident on our ex-ternal transient dock T Head location. Pilings were snapped while others have shifted dra-matically causing a quarter round curve in an otherwise straight run of dock and pilings. The submerged vessel has since been removed, dock professionals have already assessed the dam-age and, like most in the face of adversity your Club continues marching forward. With much help and the efforts of so many of your Club employees, proper preparation was the key. We were as prepared as we could be with proper management and a team effort that I was ex-tremely proud to be a part of.As the Club moves forward into the comfort of fall, please remember that our waterfront activ-ities remain available for all those still wishing to enjoy the area that surrounds us. Early morn-ing paddles or crisp afternoon sailing, whatever floats your boat, your Harbormaster is always here to accommodate any and all requests. We still have a small handful of available dockage for vessels in the 28 to 38 ft. range while we currently have a waiting list for those in excess of forty foot plus. Boat shows are upon us here on the east coast of Florida so secure your dock space ASAP prior to taking delivery of that new 38 cruiser or the 32ft maxed out center console you been dreaming about for years. Life is to be lived! and the time is NOW!As always be safe, stay happy and if time per-mits, drop on by your Harbormasters office and let’s talk boats…All the Best,

Capt. Kenny K, Harbormaster

Speaker 9/13/2016: Chief Thomas Quinn, Retired Captain of the Miami-Dade EMS and Urban Search and Rescue. USMC Corp and Viet Nam Veteran.Chief Quinn was Captain of the Miami-Dade Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue Unit during the tragic events of 9/11/2011. His department was also a FEMA unit and they were asked to go to New York City shortly after the collapse of the World Trade Center to assist in the recovery of survivors and bodies. They were there from 9/14 to 9/27. His talk included a slide show with rare photos of the search and rescue efforts. They had an A and B team that would work in shifts. The work was difficult and they had to wear respirators to protect themselves from the asbestos and other hazardous materials. He had many stories about the bravery and heroism of the people involved in the search and rescue efforts in the aftermath of 9/11. Speaker 9/20/2016: Harold Roberts, Fisherman and Captains’ Table Member.Harold and Keith Johnson put together a slide show of their recent Canadian fishing trip to Kississing Lake Lodge in Manitoba, Canada. Harold organized the 4 day trip and several of his Captains’ Table friends went with him.

These included Jack Blasy, Keith Johnson, Ralph Bliss, and Brian Kilpatrick. The weather was great and the shore lunches were delicious. Stories were told about how big and how many fish were caught. Fun was had by all! Harold has already planned the next fishing trip to Belize for Bonefish and Tarpon.

Join us for Captains' TableThe Captains' Table is an informal men’s group that meets for lunch to explore and discuss issues that affect people today. Expert speakers present an eclectic variety of topics of current interest and the meeting provides

Council Chat

Women’s Council begins the Yuletide Season here at EGYC on Friday, Novem-ber 11, when we present “Christkindlesmarkt Beim Wasser” (or “Christmas Market by the Water”) our own version of the traditional European style shopping markets still held in the beautiful town squares of many old cities today. We will transform the main dining room and dance floor areas into a festively decorated marketplace of twinkling lights and holiday vignettes where more than 20 shops, vendors, and craftsmen from both Brevard county and the Orlando area will be arranged to display and sell their wares. What a perfect scenario to begin some serious holiday gift shopping! This is a “drop in” event between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm and will include festive tapas and hors d’oeuvres, and, of course, a Women’s Council Signature Cocktail. Please RSVP to the club and join us with your friends and family to experience this unique tradition of Europe right here at EGYC. (You may also drop by the club during these hours to shop the marketplace even if you are unable to stay long enough to eat and socialize, but please do RSVP if you will be enjoying the holiday food and drink.) Women’s Council is honored to again host this event in memory of our beloved friend and member, Link Johnsten, who provided us with many years of beautiful holiday decor ideas. We will make a donation to local char-ity in his name the day of this event. Looking ahead to the New Year, we will host a joint golf event for the ladies of EGYC and Suntree County Club on Tuesday, March 7. Gail Schuneman and Becky Bell have been working for several months to coordinate this inaugural event. “Save the date” now to join us for this special day of fun!See you at our next event!Teresa McNeight,2016 Women's Council Chairwoman
