LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings Neighbors,

I hope that everyone is faring well in light of this current pandemic crisis that has gripped the nation and the world. I know that it has been tough for all of us in one way or another. While those of us with children have had to become “teachers”, others have been feeling the pinch of a slowed-down economy. It’s hard to place a value on human life, but we can at least all hope that our sacrifices will be worth it in the long run. If any of you have lost loved ones to the virus, you have my deepest condolences.

I have been encouraged by news of people volunteering their time to make masks for the community, or bringing food and supplies to those who need help, to neighbors joining together to celebrate birthdays with drive-by parades, and to people volunteering their time to assist at healthcare facilities. We sometimes take for granted our liberties that we enjoy or the people who have to face crisis daily, but this current event has definitely highlighted the value of both.

I know that we are all anxious to “get back to normal” but we know one thing for sure. Normal will not be the same again once the restrictions are lifted. We may have to practice social distancing for some time until it can be assured we are either all immune, there is a vaccine, or a treatment available to combat the viral scourge. In the meantime, we must stay vigilant with handwashing, mask wearing, social distancing, self-quarantining, home schooling and working from home. As with all things, this too shall pass.

On the bright side, spring has sprung! It seems Mother Nature just keeps the seasons rolling along. At least we all have a little extra time now to work on our yards and those home projects that we’ve been otherwise too busy to get around to doing. We’ve also gotten to know our families better ever since we’ve been asked to shelter in place. I wonder how many have been able to enjoy a dinner together for the first time in a while? Situations like this one remind you of the little things in life that really matter: love, family, community and friendships.

As always, stay safe, stay home and if you do go out, please wear a mask and still greet each other with a smile and a wave – though it might be hard to see the smile behind the mask but it will still show through.

SANDBRIDGE BEACH CIVIC LEAGUE NEWSSBCL membership meetings have been canceled for April and May. The membership meeting is tentatively scheduled to resume on Monday, June 15 if the stay-at-home order is lifted on June 10.

The April 13 Board meeting was conducted via Zoom. The Board agreed to cancel all events in May. Board members also discussed a revision to postpone elections for officers and board members but present Bylaws for a vote in the June membership meeting. Ballots will go out in the June SBCL newsletter. Here is the motion which passed unanimously:

Postpone June elections, but still hold vote for Bylaws revisions in June. If Bylaws revisions pass, the elections will be moved to November and current Board terms will extend until then.

The Bylaws revisions can be found on the SBCL website at sandbridgecivicleague.org.

The Introduction to the Bylaws revisions is below:

Letter to MembershipIntroducing Proposed Bylaws Revision 4

Review of the SBCL Bylaws began on January 14th and concluded on February 5th of 2020. Thank you to the members of The SBCL Bylaws Committee for contributing their time and effort during this review process and for their continued commitment to the well-being of the Sandbridge Civic League. Your Bylaws Committee members included Jennifer Branin, Pat Burns, Cheryl Caloras (Chair), Joan Davis, Charlie Kelly, Mathew Lemn and Heather Malaby. Below is a summary of the changes made to our current Bylaws. Due to canceled meetings in April and May, because of the stay-at-home order, the Proposed Revision (4) is now available on our website, in detail, for your review. At our Annual Membership meeting in June, the Proposed Revised Bylaws will be voted on. A two-thirds majority of members voting is required for adoption.

REVISIONS

Any and all changes made to the current Bylaw fell under one of two categories:

1. Changing the SBCL fiscal year from July 1st through June 30th to January 1st through December 31st. Wording, grammar and dates were edited to facilitate this proposal in the following ARTICLES:

ARTICLE III, Section 3ARTICLE IV, Section 3AARTICLE IV, Section 3BARTICLE IV, Section 3DARTICLE IV, Section 4AARTICLE IV, Section 4EARTICLE VI, Section 1ARTICLE VI, Section 2ARTICLE VII, Section 2ARTICLE VII, Section 3ARTICLE VIII, Section 1ARTICLE VIII, Section 6

*Rationale: The change in dates will simplify fiscal matters for the SBCL Membership

2. The term “made available” has been used in place of references to “sending, mailing, including, publishing and printing. In addition, detailed operational instructions were streamlined and edited for redundant words or phrases in the following ARTICLES:

ARTICLE IV, Section 3CARTICLE IV, Section 3DARTICLE IV, Section 4AARTICLE IV, Section 4DARTICLE IV, Section 4EARTICLE IV, Section 6ARTICLE V, Section 1ARTICLE V, Section 5ARTICLE VI, Section 2ARTICLE VI, Section 3ARTICLE VII, Section 2ARTICLE VII, Section 3ARTICLE VIII, Section 1ARTICLE XI, Section 2

*Rationale: To provide flexibility and accommodate the manner in which the SBCL operates today and into our future. Allowing for new avenues of communication for SBCL Members. These include but are not limited to: SBCL Newsletter, SBCL Website, Facebook or social media sites.

HOPPING DOWN THE BUNNY TRAILDespite Obstacles, the Easter Bunny Delivers

(Photos on page 6-7)By Jane Stilley

Peter Cottontail wasn’t taking “no” for an answer when the SBCL’s Easter Egg Hunt had to be canceled because of Covid-19. Amy Barton, who has been organizing the hugely-popular event for years, could have just walked away and taken a year off. If you know Amy, you know she is not a quitter. When we came to the realization that the Easter Egg Hunt at Little Island Park needed to be called off, she told me “I just can’t fathom not being able to bring joy to the children of Sandbridge.” Amy then came up with the idea of Easter egg home deliveries with everyone’s health and safety a first concern.

Instead of her army of volunteers, Amy kept the process down to just her immediate family of her husband Pat and son Bane. It was a Herculean task. The Easter Bunny delivered 3,500 eggs to 55 homes. This mission of love took the Barton family all day to accomplish, with just one break for the Easter Bunny (or should I say Energizer Bunny) to get a quick lunch.

You can see by the photos how the kids (and adults) were so delighted with the special delivery. Although families were asked to sign up in advance so Amy would know how many eggs to prepare, she did make impromptu stops for anyone she thought might have been left out. Bane Barton is also the hero of the day for donning the Easter Bunny costume and giving up his entire Saturday to perform such a generous deed. His father Pat handled the driving detail, mapping out all the homes in an orderly fashion.

Amy would like to thank Angela Kirkland for providing the blessing and Staci and Barry Kirschner for the ice cream cone coupons from Sugar Shack. She also adds, “I say it all the time, but I am so grateful for not only our piece of paradise where we live, but even more, I am grateful for all the loving people in our community.” Back atcha, Amy! She is truly the embodiment of the Easter spirit, and Sandbridge is blessed to have the Bartons!

Dear Friend,In the wake of the COVID-19 public health crisis, we all must come together to support our communities. One of the ways you can help is donating blood. The FDA has issued new guidance to address the urgent need for blood donations during this pandemic. Below are the new blood donations regulations. WHO CAN GIVE BLOODDue to the urgent need for blood donations during COVID-19, the FDA has changed certain restrictions regarding blood donations:• For those with recent tattoos and piercings: the agency is changing the recommended deferral period from 12 months to 3 months.• For those who have traveled to malaria-endemic areas (and are residents of malaria non-endemic countries): the agency is changing the recommended deferral period from 12 months to 3 months.• For donors who would have been deferred due to regulations pertaining to reducing the risk of HIV transmission by blood: the agency is changing the recommended deferral period from 12 months to 3 months.• For those who spent time in certain European countries or on military bases in Europe who were previously considered to have been exposed to a potential risk of transmission of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease or Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, the agency is eliminating the recommended deferrals and is recommending allowing reentry of these donors.

As this newsletter hits your mailboxes, we are about one month away from our June 10th “exit date” from our Stay at Home Order. Things are changing by the day, so who knows what will happen after that date.

A “new normal” has set in, and many of us aren’t sure things will ever go back to BC (before Coronavirus). That’s not necessarily a bad thing. We will forever wash our hands more (I hope) and be more diligent about disinfecting. It appears that large crowd situations like concerts and big stadium events are not going to immediately rebound. We are exercising more, because it’s what we can still do solo. Yes, we are cooking (and eating) more as well, so we sure need that exercise. Beaches here are closed for everything but exercise and fishing. Everyone now owns a thermometer. Several months ago, many of us had never heard of Zoom! But now we are all becoming digitally savvy.

Also the new normal: workplaces and Corporate America won’t just give lip service to “don’t come to work sick.” They will enforce it. I caught the worst cold of my life sitting next to a sniffling and sneezing young lady on a plane several years back. She told me she “just couldn’t miss a bachelorette party in Chicago.” In the future, let’s hope people like her with FOMO (fear of missing out) will also think twice before infecting others at must-attend events.

Hopefully, people are over hoarding toilet paper. Now there are other things in short supply. For example: yeast, because people are doing more baking. I tried to find light hand weights to buy locally. No dice, because everyone is working out at home due to gyms being closed. Hair dye and nail polish remover are also hard to find, because salons are shuttered.

Speaking of stores, many of us are really making an effort to support local businesses. Sugar Shack has joined in the takeout business with breakfast burritos. Please keep them in mind, along with Simply Steamed, Baja and the Sandbridge Seaside Market. Instead of buying our sneakers online, we drove across town recently to give our business to a running shoe store whose clerk brought our purchases to our car. The outing broke up what would have been a boring, dreary day.

Sandbridge’s generosity continues to soar. There are now groups and groups of people sewing masks for hospitals, rescue crews and others on the front lines. Kathy Gause organizes one of those groups. She also has taught most, if not all, of Sandbridge about Zoom. Judy Donahue heads a church group that is taking meals to shut-ins. Amy Barton, who organizes the annual SBCL Easter Egg Hunt, decided to improvise and single-handedly (with the help of her husband Pat and son Bane) delivered Easter cheer to individual homes. Kelly Lindquist of Beachy Photography is taking porch pictures of families and making a music video of them. Jonnie Mellen now commandeers birthday drive-bys on almost a daily basis. And Ken Leach is making sure we will have a Red Cross blood drive in May. And our volunteer rescue squad continues to show up and answer calls despite the risks.

Yes, things have changed dramatically, and we will learn from this experience. There is an entire generation that doesn’t know how easy it was to board an airplane before 9/11. Or how simple it was to open a pill bottle or a container before the Tylenol cyanide scare in the early ‘80s. We have learned valuable safety lessons from those tragedies and other events like them. We will move forward from this as well. It is the “new normal.”

Stopping the spread of coronavirus is disrupting daily life with news changing on a moment-by-moment basis. The recommendations, treatments, way it is spread, how long it lasts, how close we can get to each other, where we can and can’t go, all brings us to an entire life-fluctuating experience. As they have said on the news, coronavirus is a chain with many links.

In an attempt to stop the spread of the coronavirus, Virginians were given a strong warning to adhere to social distancing. It became very obvious early on that so many blew off the suggestions to stay off the beach and social distance until we were ordered a “stay at home” mandate on Monday, March 30. These restrictions implemented are ones we have never seen in our lifetime, and I pray we never see them again. Those who did not take this seriously now realize Covid-19 is nothing to laugh about.

Our beaches are now closed, making it quite a different spring for us. The real estate companies tell me only one percent of the houses are actually rented right now. What you are seeing are the non-resident homeowners who have decided to come here to hunker down, the winter renters and those of us who live here

full time. We are all home! Many of the winter renters are in the military and have out-of-state tags, as do many of our non-resident owners.

Just as we requested, our police department is doing its job to enforce the beach closure. Residents who live on the ocean report that police are out every day, going up and down the beach on ATVs. I have also witnessed a police helicopter flying overhead. The police have even stopped walkers and told them they must keep a social distance. Our police officers are taking a big risk being out there in public. They are so appreciated.

I also want to give a shout-out to all those in our neighborhood who have chosen to do good for others. Kudos to those helping hands making masks for those on the front lines, the drive-by birthday gatherings, crosses placed in yards or access ways for Easter, the Easter Bunny “special deliveries” and those who pick up groceries and supplies for others who cannot. This all allows us to remain a strong community. Stay safe and enjoy family while this lasts.
