LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Can you feel it? The autumn air is moving and ushering in a new season. As the summer winds down, we turn our attention to how we fared from the hurricane that brushed past us, and we look towards the upcoming holidays. School is back in session, the buses are rolling down the streets, and we are all breathing a collective sigh of relief.
At our September meeting, we had part one of our two-part Political Forum for this election year. We heard from two candidates running for City Treasurer, two school board candidates, and our State Delegate Barry Knight. At our October meeting, we will host candidates running for City Council, State Senate and House of Delegates. Be sure to come out to hear from these candidates and get an opportunity to meet with them.
With fall, we also have our annual Oktoberfest celebration. This year’s event promises to be a great one (as have all the prior events) and will be taking place at the Baja restaurant. Please make sure to RSVP for the event so we can make sure that we have plenty of beer, sausage, and sauerkraut on hand. Of course, there’s my personal favorite – strudel.
The end of summer doesn’t just mean the beginning of fall but also holds one of our area’s largest fund raising events for our local rescue squad. While Hurricane Dorian tried to put a damper on the event, the SBVRS’ annual Pig Pickin’ took place at Little Island Park and was still a great success in spite of being pushed back one day. The weather was amazing and attendance certainly reflected the good mood and high energy. We are all so grateful to have the commitment of our local volunteers, and we were all there to show just how much we support them.
There’s a lot of activity occurring in Sandbridge this season. We are getting some new sewer main pipes installed on South Sandpiper Road, our beaches will be getting replenished, our new bridge is (slowly) being built, and we are seeing a widening of Princess Anne Road. Pretty soon we will be rid of the bumpy road, we’ll have larger beaches, a taller bridge, and some extra lanes as we leave Sandbridge. Exciting things are happening!
As always, remember to be kind to each other and greet everyone with a smile and wave. I look forward to seeing everyone at Oktoberfest. Auf Wiedersehen!

Chalk one up for another successful Baja Surf Classic which was held at Little Island Park on Sunday, September 15. The conditions were sunny with nice waves all day. It was a great day for families to enjoy a few last hours of summer beach weather. We had 86 contestants in nine divisions. Once again, the contest was free for participants, and we raised money for our expenses and our charities by individual and local business donations. This year, we will be donating to CHKD and the Carson Clough medical fund.
I want to thank all our local families and businesses, who so graciously donated to those in need. We were able to raise $6,100 and after paying our expenses, we have $4,000 for the charities. The Baja will match this donation, so each charity will receive $4,000.

Oktoberfest:It’s Our Party!
Sunday, October 64:00 to 7:00 p.m.
at The Baja
This is the party the SBCL throws for its members, so get ready to celebrate German-style! We will be dining and dancing, grilling and chilling and lifting a stein or two, as well as reconnecting with our Sandbridge neighbors and friends. Your SBCL membership dues need to be up-to-date to attend. Membership covers two adults per household. You can pay online at sandbridgecivicleague.org or you can pay “day of” the event to our membership committee.
This is an adult-only event. If you need childcare, contact Joan Davis at [email protected].
You still have time to pitch in to help. It takes many hands to put on a party of this magnitude. Volunteers are needed to set up, check in attendees, clean up and break down. Please let us know if you would like to volunteer by responding to Janice Lott at [email protected].
Get ready to kick up your heels at Oktoberfest!
CELEBRATING 40 YEARS OF PIG PICKIN’By David Whitley, Sandbridge Rescue Squad Booster Chair
Despite having to move a day due to Hurricane Dorian, the 40th Annual Sandbridge Rescue Squad Pig Pickin’ was a huge success from all indications! While quite a few people were unable to attend the rescheduled date, more than 1,200 ardent supporters showed up to beautiful weather, great food and drink. An artisan show representing the area’s best, along with jamming dance music rounded out the day. Great fellowship was shared, friendships were renewed and new ones started.
The funds raised by this event, put on by the Sandbridge Rescue Squad Boosters, support our local Volunteer Rescue Squad in purchasing much needed equipment and supplies to serve our residents and visitors. Did you know that Virginia Beach has the largest volunteer rescue squad system in the country? Our current $300,000 campaign will replace an old outdated ambulance with a new advanced life support unit equipped with the latest in pre-hospital care equipment and supplies.
We want to sincerely thank our corporate sponsors, who have stepped up to help our community raise these much-needed funds. They include Siebert Realty (the main event sponsor), Beach Pros Realty, Sandbridge Blue Realty, RBC Homes, Harvey Lindsey, Langley FCU, Capital Concepts, Knowing the Ropes Construction, Prosper Insurance, Rolf & Sharon Bartschi and the Crabtree Family Foundation. In addition, multiple individual sponsors (who will be listed in an upcoming newsletter) helped make this event a success. Last but not least, “Pig Pickin’ Chief” Mike Maloney who organized a great show. His hard work over the many years is a testament to the character of our locals in supporting the Sandbridge community. Great job to all! See you next year!
SURPRISE HONORSAs you probably know, Joan Davis wears many hats. And now she’s been honored for some of her many volunteer activities. As Sandbridge Volunteer Rescue Squad President and Senior Paramedic, Joan was surprised in front of her fellow members with a 30-year trophy. Deputy City Manager Steve Cover did the honors. Along with her three decades in the rescue squad, Joan was also awarded for her nine years with Parks and Recreation. This just scratches the surface of all the service Joan does for others. Congratulations, Joan and thank you!
ATKINSON AWARDEDLongtime broker/owner Betsy Atkinson has been awarded for her 50 years in real estate. Betsy received the prestigious honor from the Virginia Association of Realtors. Betsy is the owner of Sandbridge Realty, Sanctuary Realty and Atkinson Realty. Congratulations, Betsy for your commitment and dedication!

Dear President Roper:
Thank you for the opportunity to serve as the Oceanfront Beach Access Ways chair since 2016. During that time, I was able to oversee the construction of five access ways while also working on walkway issues with the Cities Coastal Project Manager and Public Works Beach Operations.
In January 2018, I was diagnosed with Stage III Melanoma which has taken a toll on my physical health and limited my involvement.
It is with deepest regret that I must step down from my position as Chair of the Oceanfront Beach Access Ways.
If needed, I will be available to share any of my contact or knowledge.
Sincerely,Robert (Robbie) BorumOne of the original family-owned homes in Sandbridge Beach since 1957

Flotsam and Jetsam
SANDBRIDGE BEACH CIVIC LEAGUE2129 General Booth Blvd.
Suite 103 - 180Virginia Beach, Virginia 23454
A hurricane by the name of Dorian almost blew us out of the water, so to speak, for our 40th annual Sandbridge Volunteer Rescue Squad Pig Pickin’. As luck would have it, we were once again spared the devastation other parts of the country experienced. Our annual festival had to move to Sunday, which turned out to be the perfect day to enjoy great music, art, shopping and some added additions like the silent and live auction. With a new fully-stocked ambulance coming in at over $300,000, we had to up the ante to pay for the service supplied by our volunteers. Thanks to everyone for your financial support. Keep in mind, we really need volunteers to become members of our rescue station!
We had many visitors from afar. Tom Haser flew in from China. Former Sandbridgers Jeff and Sharon Sheats returned from their new home aboard a yacht in Washington, DC, surprising many of their friends. Life members of the SBVRS Mel and Debbie Harrell showed up for their first trip back in 13 years. We had more politicians than Richmond on the campaign trail.
Kudos go to our Booster Chair David Whitley and Pig Pickin’ Chair Mike Maloney for all the time and effort put into making this another
fine community event at the same time raising the much-needed funding for our squad. They and a village of volunteers moved heaven and earth to make this happen. And we cannot forget all those who attended to show their support. I also need to give a shout-out to Bingo Chair Ken Leach who devoted every Wednesday this summer to making Bingo a huge success while also raising money for our rescue squad.
After attending another local function “The Baja Surf Classic,” you realize what a magnificent place we live. Do you know that all the funds are given to local families and charities in need?
One more person who needs many thanks is Doug Lott. He has spent hours streamlining the membership process. And you will notice your “membership paid through” date is back on the newsletter, above your name and address. Thank you, Doug!
Our whirl of gaiety isn’t over yet! Oktoberfest is only days away. This is the party the Sandbridge Beach Civic League throws for its members. It’s a great way for us to reconnect with friends and neighbors as we wind down from summer. I hope to see you all there!
