"We must be merciful towards those who are in misery"

- Swami Vivekananda

Tamil Nadu has witnessed unprecedented and heavy rains in the last

two months of 2015. The northern parts of the State, especially the State's

capital Chennai city and its neighbouring districts Kancheepuram and

Thiruvallur besides Cuddalore bore the brunt with schools and colleges

remain closed for over a month. In fact, from 1st December to 4th Decem-

ber 2105, life came to standstill for all consequent to the disruption in

power and communications network. All the reservoirs received copious

water beyons its capacity. Consequently, the excess water was released

to sea resulting flooding in Chennai leading to death and destruction of

life and property.

The natural calamity brought in the good souls in the society to unite in

serving the people who were foced to flee their homes and take shelter in

temporary arrangements made by the local people and the Government.

Our society too takes pride in having contributed to this noble cause. Our

Schools from all over the city have stepped out in this social service by

Starting emergency kitchens in their campus and serving food to

thousands of affected people near their location;

Preparing Nilavembu Kashayam and served to prevent outbreak

of rain-related diseases;

Collected funds from parents and staff have been used for the

noble cause;

Our Alumni students also played a vital role by contributing their

valuable time, energy and money for this noble cause.

We feel proud that we have contributed

noble minds to the society and are on the

path of Swami Vivekananda.

Poem

A Night in June

The sun has long been set,,

The stars are out by twos and threes

The little birds are piping yet,

Among the bushes and trees.

There’s a cuckoo and one or two thrushes,

And a far-off wind that rushes,

And a sound of water that gushes,

And the cuckoo’s sovereign cry,

Fills all the hollow of the sky.- P. Swetha, VII - E

A Nation’s Strength

Not gold, but only men can make

people great and strong;

Men who for truth and honour’s sake

Stand fast and suffer long.

Brave men who work while others sleep

Who dare while others fly...

They build a nation’s pillars deep

And lift them to the sky.

Very Nice Definition of Time

Amazing Plant Facts

Amazing Algae:

Algae have no roots, leaves or flowers. Butseaweeds have leaf-life fronds. They also have stalks calledstipes and root like “holdlasts” that cling to the bottom. Mostalgae live in water.

Fantastic Fruit:

The world’s biggest fruit comes from the coco-de-mer, a palm tree that grows on the seychelles Islands inthe Indian ocean. The fruit weigh up to 20 kilograms and takesfive to ten years to ripen. Inside are only two or three seeds.

The Largest Trees:

The redwood tree family from North America in-cludes the world’s biggest trees. They can grow over 80metres high and measure upto 30 metres around the baseof the trunk. The thick, red, spongy bark of redwoods helpsthem to survive the heat of forest fires.

Roots:

Some trees, such as the fig, have very longroots to reach water hidden deep underground. Rainforest trees take up nutrients from the soil’s surfacewith only shallow roots.

Two-leaf wonder:

The welwitschid mirabilis plant grows only twoleaves, which are 2 to 8 metres long and tear intothinner strips with age. Dew collects under the leaves, helping the plant to survive in the Namile desert ofAfrica. The plant lives for 400 to 1,500 years.

A Teacher is

someone who is wise...

who cares about the students and wears no disguise

But is honest and open and shares from the heart.

Not just lessons from books, but life where you are.

A teacher takes time to help and tutor

with English or Math or on a Computer

It’s you who’s patient even in stress,

who never gives less than the very best!

Not that I was the perfect student,

But you were the perfect teacher for me...!!!

- B. Nivetha, XII - B

In praise ofPenguins

These funny birds in fancy clothes

may waddle in the snow

but when they reach the icy sea

just watch how fast they go!

Their song sounds like a donkey’s bray

they cannot soar or fly.

Yet penguins manage very well

and let me tell you why

their feathers keep out water,

their blubber keeps out cold,

their wings make perfect paddles

because they do not fold.

Their tails are good for steerring

they brake with both their feet.

So tell me now, from all you've heard.

Aren’t Penguins Neat?

How to tell a winner from a loser

A winner says: “Let’s find out!’’

A Loser says: “Nobody knows!’’

A winner goes through a problem.

A loser goes around it - and never gets past it.

A winner makes commitments.

A loser makes promises.

A winner says “I am good, but not as good as I ought to be”.

A loser says “I am not as bad as a lot of other people’’.

A winner tries to learn from those who are superior to him.

A loser tries to tear down those who are superior.

A winner says “There ought to be a better way to do it’’.

A loser says “That’s the way it’s always been done here’’.

A winner says “I am going to do it”.

A loser says “forget it, I won’t work’’.

SO ALWAYS BE A WINNER

The Lovable Rain

I am the divine of God from the sky.I make my friends, uncle, Aunty, Grandpa and Grandma happy.I fall in diamond shape which is more valuable. The diamonds (rains) are received in some places.I think rest of them are very rich.I quench the thirst of others.I am the shower to those who didnot take bath.I feel happy when my family (trees, plants, crops, birds etc) dances in joy.I knock your door as your guest but you people didnot invite your guest.I moved with angerness and sorrow. But some people are devotees of me.The devotees are awaiting for me. I love them.I love you people all. I know that you people will love me more andbe awaiting for me. OK...

Love u all...

Discipline

Discipline is most

important one which we

need in our life. When a man is disci-

pline he was 100% true for the environment.

In English there were 26 alphabet; each has

number like A - 1, B - 2, C - 3. Likewise when

the word discipline is added, let us see the re-

sult.D + I + S + C + I + P + L + I + N + E

4 + 9 + 19 + 3 + 9 + 16 + 12 + 9 + 14 + 15 = 100

So, Discipline = 100%

GOOD MANNERS

A man of good mannersis an ornament, but a rudeman is a plague to society.Manners are the ornament ofaction. There is a wayofspeaking a kind word or ofspeaking of a kind thing, which greatly enhancestheir value.

Good Manners have always been the hall-mark of noble souls. Christ washed the feet ofhis disciples and Krishna washed the feet ofhis brahmin guests, George Washington tookhis hats off to negro who saluted him.

Such is the magical influence of good man-ners.

How Oysters make pearls?

Like diamonds and other precious stones, pearls are con-sidered special because they are very pretty and rare. A naturalpearl begins its life as a foreign object, when a grain of sand orany floating material slips in between one of the two shells ofthe oyster. In order to protect itself from the itruder, the oyster’s

body quickly takes defensiveaction by covering the uninvitedvisitor with layers of nacre. Aslong as the uninvited visitor re-mains within its body, the oyster

will continue to secrete nacre around it, layer upon layer. Over-time, the uninvited visitor will be completely covered by thesilky nacre coatings as a result of which the lovely and lustrouspearl is formed. Cultural pearls are made in the same way. Theonly difference is that a person carefully implants the irritant in-side the oyster, rather than leaving it to chance.

National Parks around the world

National parks beautifully reveal the power of nature. The deepvalleys and jagged ridges of the Glacier National Park that straddlesthe USA - Canada border, for example, flaunt the power of the iceage glaciers that carved sculpted and formed the park’s impressivelandscape millions of years ago.

Trekking through the Great Himalayan National Park, In-dia offers ample thrill and opportunity to observe nature’s best- undisturbed alpine meadows, lush coniferous forests, mistymountains and sparkling streams. The park, home to the brownbear, red fox, blue sheep, the flamboyant Himalayan monal andthe extremely rare snow leopard, will delight your senses of sightand sound with its startling scenery and wildlife.

Earth’s geology, natural events, stunning scenery, wonderful wildlife and plenty of adventure - all arepart of the unforgettale experience of exploring a national park! So, get set and explore!

Air Pollution is the addition of harmful sub-stances to the atmosphere resulting in damage tothe environment, human health, and quality of life. One of many forms of pollution, air pollution whichoccurs inside homes, schools and offices, in citiesacross continents and even globally. Air pollutionmakes people sick. It causes breathing prolemsand promotes cancer and it harms plants, animalsand the ecosystems in which they live. Some airpollutants return to earth in the form of acid rainand snow, which corrode statues and buildings, damage crops and forests and make lakes andstreams unsuitable for fish and other plant and ani-mal life. Pollution is changing earth’s atmosphereso that it lets in more harmful radiation from thesun. At the same time, our polluted atmosphere isbecoming a better insulator, preventing heat fromescaping back intospace and leading to arise in global averagetemperatures. On theglobal scale, pollutioncontrol standards are theresult of complex negotiations among nations. Newefforts to control air pollution will be necessary aslong as these trends continue.

Guess your Bir thday

Here’s a trick to surprise your friends. Ask oneof them to think of their birthday and say you willguess it correctly after an arithmetic exercise.

Step 1: Ask them to think of the number of themonth of their birth (ie) the number for August is 8;for February is 2 and so on.

Step 2 : Multiply that by 5Step 3: Add 6Step 4 : Multiply that total by 4Step 5 : Add 9Step 6 : Multiply this total by 5 once againStep 7 : Add the date they were born onto the

total. (If they were born on 17th, then add 17)Step 8 : Substract 165 from the totalStep 9 : Now ask them for the resulting number.

If it is 817, their date of birth is 17, month of birth is8 (August). If the resulting number is 312, their dateof birth is 12 and the month is 3 (March)

Try this with different friends. You will have fun.

Mathematics fun short cuts

Multiplication by eleven. To multiply a two digit number by 11, simply addthe two digits together and insert the result in between. For example, to multiply 23 by 11, add 2 plus 3,which equals 5, and insert the 5 between the 2 and 3.The answer is 253. To multiply 14 by 11, add 1 plus 4, which equals 5,and insert the 5 between the 1 and the 4. The answer is154. Try these for yourself.a. 63 x 11 b. 52 x 11 c. 34 x 11 d. 26 x 11 The answers area. 693 b. 572 c. 374 d. 286 In the examples above, the two digits add uptoless than 9. What do we do if the digits add to anumber higher than 9? When the result is a two digitnumber, insert the units digit if the result between thedigits and carry the one to the first digit of the answer.

For instance, to multiply 28 by 11, add 2 and 8,which equals 10. Insert the 0 between the 2 and the 8to get 208, and carry the 1 to the first digit, 2 to give ananswer of 308.

 Lets try 88 x 11; 8 + 8 = 16

Insert 6 between the 88 to give 868, then add 1to the first 8 to give an answer of 968.
