In 2001 the Government of Russia approved the
construction of a deepwater port in the Kaliningrad
region by the Federal Target Program “Development of
transport system of Russia (2010 – 2015)” (approved by
the Government of the Russian Federation, December 5,
2001 № 848)
Deepwater port in the Vistula Lagoon (under planning)
This port, as a regional
transport center, must
ensure handling export and
transit of containerized
cargo.
Total throughput of 66-120
million tons per year

Opinion of different researchers: the construction of a
deepwater port greatly change the state of the
environment and increase the human pressure.
The construction and operation may adversely affect the
water quality and biodiversity of the Vistula Lagoon.
Also problems with dredging of the canal will be. Because
difference between the average depth of the Lagoon (2.5
m) and the canal (18 m) is very big.
Consequences of port construction

Conclusions
Scientific expertise in geomorphology,
sedimentary, hydrography, land hydrology,
meteorology will make for each small harbors of
the Russian part of the Vistula Lagoon.
Construction and operation of the port will lead
to major changes in natural conditions, the
Vistula Lagoon.
Development of the small harbors infrastructure
in the Vistula Lagoon will be the impetus for the
development of the its outside area.Dmitry A. Domnin, Boris V. Chubarenko Vistula Lagoon and its ports in the transport system of the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia,
