Shanah Tovah! These High Holidays of 2020, which in

the Hebrew calendar begin the year

5781, are different than ever before.

We wish that we could gather together,

yet our responsibility for ourselves, for

each other and for our entire society

demands that we remain separate

and safe.

This year we offer you many different

opportunities to pray, to listen, to

watch, to learn, to meditate, to be

inspired, and to acknowledge the

sacred arrival of Rosh Hashanah and

the Jewish New Year. We hope that

you will find your own place and

join virtually with our community in

celebrating our blessings even though

we are physically apart.

This Virtual Rosh Hashanah Companion,

which you can print or use online, will

allow you to follow along and join in

the central prayers and songs of our

services. Please sing along, read and

pray aloud or silently, or simply listen

and fill your holiday with meaning.

Each of us will approach these sacred

days in our own way as we welcome our

new year knowing that we are united in

our prayers.

We pray for good health, for effective

treatments and vaccines, for patience

and calm, for blessing and wisdom, for

compassion and kindness, for shared

visions of a better society and a better

world, for justice and for peace.

Creating Sacred Space in Your Home for the High Holidays

This year we gather as one community in a different way. We will be in our own homes,

alone or in our small family groups, gathered safely, physically distanced yet together.

THE TIME IS NOW Lyrics by Debbie Friedman and Tamara Ruth Cohen

To listen to the song please click here or copy into your browser: http://bit.ly/makingholyspace

The time is now, we’ve gathered round. So bring all your gifts and bring all your burdens with you.

No need to hide. Arms open wide. We gather as one. To make a Makom Kadosh.

We come to tell. We come to hear. We come to teach, to learn. We come to grow. And so we say.

The time is now. Sing to the One. God’s Presence is here, Shechinah, You will dwell among us.

We’ll make this space a holy place, So separate, so whole. Rejoice every soul who enters here.

Our question and our challenge is this:

How can we make our homes into sacred spaces for the High Holidays?

We offer the following suggestions to help you make your space a holy place:

u Print this guide out or access it on a tablet or device to accompany your services.

u Create an intention and a space to sit and pray during the holidays, maybe your living

room, maybe the room your computer is in currently, whatever works for you!

u Add a white or festive tablecloth, bring in fresh flowers, display your own symbolic

Jewish holiday items – your shofar, your apples and honey dishes, your candlesticks –

whatever you want to make it right for you!

u Clean up and prepare your space before you begin watching services – just as you

(hopefully) would put your cell phone on silent or turn it off in our sanctuary for

services, unplug for the day or at least for the hours that we are together spiritually in

prayer for the High Holy Days.

u Decide your own dress code – dress up, dress casual, decide to make this year a pajama

New Year – whatever works best for you!

Take time to make your space

special, and check our Temple

emails and website,

www.sestl.org/highholidays2020/

for up to date information about

services, programs and other

ways to connect with your

Shaare Emeth community during

these High Holidays.

The Union for Reform Judaism, (URJ),

has prepared a series of wonderful

experiences to help us as Reform Jews

to prepare for these Days of Awe. Go to

to explore other ways to prepare for a

most meaningful celebration of the

Holy Days.

Some Thoughts for Rosh HashanahYour Book of Life doesn’t begin today, on Rosh Hashanah. It began

when you were born. Some of the chapters were written by

other people: your parents, siblings, and teachers. Parts of your

book were crafted out of experiences you had because of other

people’s decisions: where you lived, what schools you went to, what

your homes were like. But the message of Rosh Hashanah, the

anniversary of the creation of the world, is that everything can be

made new again, that much of your book is written every day — by

the choices you make. The book is not written and sealed; you get

to edit it, decide what parts you want to emphasize and remember,

and maybe even which parts you want to leave behind. Shanah tovah

means both a good year, and a good change. Today you can change

the rest of your life. It is never too late.

– Rabbi Laura Geller from Mishkan Hanefesh: Machzor for the

Days of Awe

“The blessing over the blowing of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah

refers to the mitzvah as 'hearing the voice of the Shofar,' but since

that voice speaks without words, the message that is heard depends

a great deal on who is doing the listening.”

– Douglas Aronin

“But the most important renewal of life is that which occurs on

Rosh Hashanah. Because that is when all life of the previous year

returns to its essential source and a new life, such as was never

known before, emerges from the void to sustain existence for an

entire year.”

– Tzvi Freeman

“We lend power to the holiness of this day. For it is tremendous

and awe filled, and on it Your majesty will be exalted, Your throne

will be established in lovingkindness, and You will sit on that throne

in truth.”

– from the prayer “Unetaneh Tokef ”

“Rosh Hashanah isn’t just about being new; it’s about a change.”

– Max Levis

“The king's usual place is in the

capital city, in the royal palace.

Anyone wishing to approach

the king must go through the

appropriate channels in the

palace bureaucracy and gain

the approval of a succession of

secretaries and ministers. They

must journey to the capital and

pass through the many gates,

corridors and antechambers

that lead to the throne room.

Their presentation must be

meticulously prepared, and they

must adhere to an exacting

code of dress, speech and

mannerism upon entering into

the royal presence.

“However, there are times

when the king comes out to the

fields outside the city. At such

times, anyone can approach

him; the king receives them all

with a smiling face and a radiant

countenance. The peasant

behind his plow has access to

the king in a manner unavailable

to the highest ranking minister

in the royal court when the

king is in the palace.

“The month of Elul is when the

king is in the field.”

– Rabbi Schneur Zalman

of Liadi

Wildpeace

Not the peace of a ceasefire

not even the vision of the wolf and the lamb,

but rather

as in the heart when the excitement is over

and you can talk only about a great weariness.

I know that I know how to kill, that makes me an adult.

And my son plays with a toy gun that knows

how to open and close its eyes and say Mama.

A peace

without the big noise of beating swords into ploughshares,

without words, without

the thud of the heavy rubber stamp: let it be

light, floating, like lazy white foam.

A little rest for the wounds who speaks of healing?

(And the howl of the orphans is passed from one generation

to the next, as in a relay race:

the baton never falls.)

Let it come

like wildflowers,

suddenly, because the field

must have it: wildpeace.

– Yehuda Amichai, translated by Chana Bloch

“On Rosh Hashanah we are aware that God is judging us. But God

is truly judging us every moment of every day. It is only on Rosh

Hashanah that we, as a people, pause to reflect on this phenomenon.”

– Michael Mascolo

No One

No one ever told me the coming of the Messiah

Could be an inward thing.

No one ever told me a change of heart

Might be as quiet as new-fallen snow.

No one ever told me that redemption

Was as simple as springtime and as wonderful

As birds returning after a long winter,

Rose-breasted grosbeaks singing in the swaying branches

Of a newly budded tree.

No one ever told me that salvation

Might be like a fresh spring wind

Blowing away the dried, withered leaves of another year,

Carrying the scent of flowers, the promise of fruition.

What I found for myself I try to tell you:

Redemption and salvation are very near,

And the taste of them is in the world

That God created and laid before us.

– Ruth Brin

“Rosh Hashanah is about relationships. Whether between individuals

and the God in whom they believe, communities and the traditions

which define them, or simply between individuals, whether any God

or tradition is part of their lives, it’s all about sustaining relationships

which sustain us and help us do the same for others.”

– Rabbi Brad Hirschfield, president of CLAL, The National Jewish

Center for Learning and Leadership

LIGHT OF A CLEAR BLUE MORNING By Dolly Parton

It's been a long dark night And I've been waiting for the morning It's been a long hard fight But I see a brand new day dawning I've been looking for the sunshine 'Cause I ain't seen it in so long But everything's gonna work out just fine Everything's gonna be alright That's been all wrong 'Cause I can see the light of a clear blue morning I can see the light of a brand new day I can see the light of a clear blue morning Everything's gonna be all right It's gonna be okay

MOURNING INTO DANCING Music: Debbie Friedman Based on Psalm 90

You turn my mourning into dancing, So that my soul might sing to You And it not be stilled. Oh, God my God, forever I will thank You Odekah

Now I sing praised to the Holy One, Who lifts me up when I have fallen. And I cry to You to heal me And You have answered all my prayers. I ask that You be gracious and hear me, Adonai I have called to You to help me And You’ve supported me with joy!
