1 Rabbi Jonathan Crane [email protected] From the Depths Rosh Hashanah I Shanah Tovah. This morning we bend our way into the new year. We curve, twist, and twirl time at this time. We weave together past and future into this present moment. For is not this Rosh Hashanah the same as last year’s Rosh Hashanah? Are we not recapitulating, repeating, redoing what we’ve already done? As if in a profound fit of déjà vu, we find ourselves this Rosh Hashanah wrapped again up in creation, revelation and redemption. As if time itself were a wreath, we garland ourselves with yet another year, proclaiming Rosh Hashanah a crown that is simultaneously ancient and eternal, never changing, new just as it always was. Time wraps in on itself. And then again… Though this Rosh Hashanah may seem like every previous one, it is not. It is the start of a new year, 5772, a year that heretofore has never been. 5771 has now concluded. We forge ahead into another chapter, and this Rosh Hashanah is but the introductory paragraph of a new story, a year’s adventure awaiting to be written and experienced. In this version of things, time is not circular; time is linear. It extends both behind us and in front of us, shimmering and hazy if we look out in either direction too far. A wreath. An ever‐expanding rod. *** While tempting, I do not want to dwell on these notions of time as much as I want to go fishing. Come join me. Let’s start at the beginning. Well, not exactly at the beginning but on the fifth day. “And God said, ‘Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and birds that fly above the earth across the expanse of sky.” And God created the hataninim hag’dolim, and all the living creatures of every kind that creep, which the waters brought forth in swarms, and all
