President’s Message

By Gary Bloch

Dear Temple Members:

As we approach the ימימ נוראימ (Yamim Noraim) or Days of Awe, I would like to again share with you my two favorite passages from the High Holidays Mahzor. The first is a private meditation found in the Torah Reading sections and the second is part of the Amidahs. They read as follows:

“Avinu Malkeinu, bless my family with peace. Teach us to appreciate the treasure of our lives. Help us always to find contentment in one another. Save us from dissension and jealousy; shield us from pettiness and rivalry. May selfish pride not divide us; may pride in one another unite us. Help us to renew our love for one another continually. In the light of Your Torah grant us, the people Israel, and all Your creatures everywhere, health and fulfillment, harmony, peace and joy in the new year.”

“Our G-d and G-d of our fathers…be gracious to us. Grant us life, well-being, lovingkindness and peace. Bless us, Lord our G-d, with all that is good…Be merciful to us and save us, for we place our hope in You, gracious and merciful G-d and King.”

L’Shana Tovah Tikatevu!! May the New Year bring only good things to us all!!

A Message From

Rabbi David Grossman

Dear Friends:

I thought I’d share an interesting story from our tradition relevant to this time of year and the days beyond.

We always try to approach the Day of Judgment with a perspective that will assure that God will grant us a year of health and prosperity. The Torah, however, does not single out Rosh HaShanah as a day of judgment. That reference is found in the Talmud, Tractate Rosh HaShanah. "ON ROSH HASHANAH ALL THE INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH PASS BEFORE GOD LIKE SHEEP PASSING THROUGH A GATE." Commentary on this passage, however, quotes the opinion of Rabbi Yosi that people are, in fact, judged every day. This view is based on a quote for the Book of Job, "YOU INSPECT HIM EVERY MORNING." These two perspectives appear to be irreconcilable; either Rosh HaShanah is the Day of Judgment or we are judged every day. How can both be true?

The Ba’al Shem Tov, a pioneer of Chasidism, was once walking in the street when he met Chaikal, the water carrier. "Chaikal, Shalom Aleichem. How are you? he inquired. "Rebbe,” he said, "things are not good. All my life I’ve earned an honest living carrying water. But now, as I get older, my body just isn’t as strong as it once was. I come home in the evening exhausted. And, besides, a person hopes to be able to retire when he gets older. And yet, here I am working just as hard as I ever have. And I barely make enough to make ends meet. Things just aren’t as I might have liked them to be."

The Ba’al Shem Tov gave Chaikal his blessing that things should improve for him and they parted ways. A few weeks later, the two met once again in the street. "So, Chaikal, how have things been going lately?" "Rebbe, Baruch HaShem, I’ve been able to live comfortably, if not richly, by the work of my hands. We’ve never needed to borrow money from anyone and we’ve never gone hungry. Even as I age, God still gives me the strength to continue my work, which is exceptional considering my age and the weight of the water I carry. Thank God, I have much to be grateful for. May Hashem only give me the strength to live out my remaining years in such health and good fortune."

The Ba’al Shem Tov turned to his disciples who had witnessed each of these two encounters with Chaikal. "Chaikal just helped us

(Rabbi Grossman’s Message from page 4) to understand the meaning of the Gemara which quotes one opinion that people are judged on Rosh HaShanah, yet later cites the opinion that we are judged every day and every moment. In fact, on Rosh HaShanah, we are assigned our allotted portions, the blessings of sustenance that we will receive over the coming year. But during the rest of the year we should pray for the ability to appreciate these blessings. Without that appreciation, no blessing would be enough or would be seen as such.

We pray on Rosh HaShanah that we receive sufficient blessings for the new year. Every other day of the year we pray that we are blessed with the understanding to see our blessings, recognize them and value them. In our story, Chaikal had the same blessings on the two days he encountered the Rebbe. The only difference was in his level of gratitude for those blessings.

I wish you all a year of blessings and the gratitude that goes with them. Rabbi Grossman

AN EVENING YOU WON’T WANT TO MISS!

Havdalah Service – Selichot Program – Collation – Selichot Service

Temple Beth Sholom will be presenting a very special Selichot program on Saturday, September 21 at 7:30 PM. We will begin with a Havdalah Service, followed by a performance and discussion by Ms. Eliana Light, a renowned Jewish wordsmith and musician. We will then enjoy a collation before concluding the evening with the Selichot service.

Raised in Memphis, TN on soul music and synagogue life, Eliana Light’s passion for Jewish life and learning shines through all her work. Meaningful music, powerful prayer, excellent education, and creative consulting…It’s all directed from one heart and toward one goal:

To help individuals discover themselves within the depth and richness of Jewish life, and to take ownership of their Judaism.

Eliana has performed and taught at various Jewish gatherings, including the Union for Reform Judaism Biennial, the NewCAJE Jewish Education Conference, Limmud New York, Songleader Boot Camp, Hava Nashira, and the DeLeT Masters Program at Brandeis University.

For Selichot, she will be conducting a discussion on the G!D Project, an educational initiative focused on accessible and meaningful conversations about G!D and spirituality through ritual, text and creativity.

Eliana Light graduated from the Jewish Theological Seminary with a Masters in Experiential Jewish Education in 2016 and is based in New York City. She's been blessed to work with amazing NYC organizations, including B'nai Jeshurun, Park Avenue Synagogue, the JCC of Manhattan and the Harlem JCC, Romemu, The New Shul, and Lab/Shul. She is also the co-founder of Shira B'dira, a singing-focused traditional egalitarian prayer community.

Bronze ($50); Silver ($75); Gold ($100) and Platinum ($180) sponsor(s) welcome.

Please join us for an unforgettable Selichot night!!!

Mi Shebeirach – Prayer for Healing

Temple Beth Sholom maintains a listing of members, relatives and friends who are in need of Mi Shebeirach prayers to comfort their physical, emotional or spiritual challenges. This prayer and listing of names are recited at all of the Temple's religious observances.

If you wish to add someone's name to this listing, you may contact the Temple Office or visit our website, www.tbshull.org to fill out the form online.

Once you submit the form, the name will be included in our listing for a period of one month (or until you advise the Temple Office that the prayer is no longer necessary). After one month, you will be required to contact the Temple Office to maintain the listing for an additional month (and every subsequent month thereafter).

Temple Beth Sholom is pleased to offer this service to our general community. We depend on those availing themselves of the service to help us keep the list current and accurate. Thank you.

Keep the Memory of

Your Loved Ones Alive

At all Friday Evening Shabbat Services there is an opportunity for anyone observing a Yahrzeit of a loved one to share with the congregation a few memories of that person. We hope this will help keep the individual and collective memories of our loved ones alive in all of our hearts. Please come and share those special memories.

Also, it is a tradition to commemorate the Yahrzeit of a loved one's passing by reciting Kaddish. To ensure a minyan is available on the appropriate date, please contact the Temple Office.

“Open Enrollment” in the Honor Roll The Honor Roll was established over 50 years ago for the purpose of raising funds which enable the Temple

to continue its mission to provide special programs and services to the Jewish and general community. Each year, as we welcome in spring, we invite all our members and friends to pledge membership to the Honor Roll. By pledging Honor Roll membership for an annual donation of $108.00, your name will be inscribed on a nameplate attached to the Honor Roll. Each year at this time you will be asked to renew your membership. By pledging Permanent Honor Roll membership for a one-time donation of $1,800.00, your name will be inscribed on a nameplate attached to the Honor Roll. Please call or email the Temple Office today to be added to the Honor Roll plaque!

Tzedakah means giving in the form of “charity” or “philanthropy”, as in giving aid, giving to the poor, or giving to a worthy cause, as

a form of justice, righteousness, and/or empathy. It is an act of giving that is for everyone, no matter our financial status. Temple Beth Sholom’s Social Action Committee (SAC) has created a Tzedakah box to facilitate such donations. This box may look like a treasure chest to some, or a bread box to others, but maybe we can think of it as both. Check it out…and drop in some “dough” next time you’re at the Temple. The designation of the donations may change from time to time and we will let you know when there is a certain focus, or when a donation has been made. The SAC would like to thank Auggie Augenstern for punching the slot into the top of the box, a slot big enough to accommodate even the largest of denominations! So, let us all practice some tikkun olam, or fixing/repairing the world, and since there are not so many children going around with a “pushke” to collect charity anymore, use our new, over-sized Tzedakah box to accomplish the same.

Submitted by Patrick Guiney and Gabriel Ben-Yosef, Co-Chairs of the SAC.

The Social Action Committee of Temple Beth Sholom would like to announce that over $140 dollars were deposited to the Tzedakah box within the past few months, and a donation to the Hebrew College Scholarship Fund has been made in the amount of $180 dollars, in honor of Rabbi Joel Goldstein’s Ordination. This donation is being made in an effort to help perfect the world under the sovereignty of G-d, or Tikkun Olam, by helping someone in need be able to achieve their goals and/or career in religious learning. The Social Action Committee would like to be able to make a Tzedakah donation related to Sukkot in this next cycle of donations, so please consider stopping by the Temple and leaving some “bread” in the Tzedakah box.
