Rabbinic ReflectionsIt is now the month of Elul,

signaling that it is time tobegin our preparations for theNew Year, and reminding usthat the High Holy Daysseason is upon us. It is duringthis time of year that we takea cheshbon hanefesh, anaccounting of the soul. Whatdoes it mean to take an

accounting of our soul? Perhaps the answer lies inone of the sections of the Torah that we will read onthe second day of Rosh Hashanah--the story of thebinding of Isaac from the Book of Genesis.

The story is familiar to most. God tellsAbraham to take his son Isaac to a mountain a fewdays journey away, and offer him up to God as asacrifice. As he prepares to kill his son on the alter,an angel stops Abraham and directs him to use aram instead, which Abraham conveniently finds ina nearby thicket. There have been volumes writtenon this strange test of faith. Rabbis have madecareers composing sermons that analyze the textfrom every viewpoint imaginable. I offer one ofthese perspectives to address the question of howwe account for our souls at this time of year.

The 11th century commentator Rashi pointsout that God does not actually command Abrahamto “slaughter” his son Isaac on the alter, but ratherGod instructs Abraham to “offer him up”; a ratherambiguous command. Taking note of Rashi’sobservation, the Ishbitzer Rebbe, a 19th centuryChasidic master, suggests that God sent Abrahamon a three day journey to the mountain because Godwanted Abraham to struggle with this question.Once God communicated to Abraham the initialcommand, there was no further communicationbetween God and Abraham that would clarify whatAbraham was meant to do when he arrived at themountain! Abraham had to figure it out on his own.Perhaps, the Ishbitzer observes, this is because lifeis not about God telling us what to do; it is moreabout us struggling with what God wants us to do,and with who God wants us to be.

And so, as we quickly move forwardtoward the year 5776, I wish you a good struggle.May your struggle lead you to take your owncheshbon hanefesh, an accounting of your soul.May you struggle with what God wants you to do,and with what you want to do; with who God wantsyou to be and with whom you want to be. And inthat struggle, may you find a reconciliation of yourspiritual accounts. Shanah Tovah!

Kol tuv,

Rabbi Jay Sherwood

Cantorial Comments Return again, return again -return to the land of yoursoul; Return to who you are, return to what you are, returnto where you areBorn and reborn again…

This simple but beautifulniggun or song which RebShlomo Carlebach paraphrasedfrom ancient texts is at the coreof our High Holy Day theme

of Tshuvah - repentance, reflection, return andrenewal. Taken from Psalm 27 which we reciteevery day during the month of Elul [before RoshHashanah begins the 1st of Tishrei] we beganintroducing this haunting melody at Shabbatservices. I know you will easily have it masteredduring Rosh Hashanah if not before!

What does it mean to ‘return’ and how dowe do it? It is not easy – it takes spiritual, physicaland mental preparation and commitment. TheJewish New Year offers us a different kind offormat for ‘resolutions’ without partying orfireworks. If you are not doing so already, perhapsyou can start a new exercise, meditation orcontemplative regimen. Perhaps you are alreadypart of a stimulating discussion group, such as abook club or Torah study! If not, make a point offinding daily inspirational texts to read. Music –especially the music of the High Holy Days – givesus moments to search the innermost depths of oursouls as well as reach for the highest heights.

And what about the big Yom Kippur fast?Fasting is as spiritual as it is physical; however it isvery important to remember that if you are takingmedications or have any medical restrictionsagainst fasting, your health is the priority. In justabout every religious faith throughout the world, there are illusions to fasting – but it is not[especially in the practice of yoga] a form of denial, discipline or punishment as it is the opportunity torise above our physical state in a sort of meditativetrance – transcendence – in order to gain inspirationand spiritual insight.

On Yom Kippur morning, in our Torahservices, we read in the Haftarah from Isaiah: ‘Isthis the fast I desire? A day for men to starve theirbodies? Is it bowing the head like a bulrush andlying in sackcloth and ashes? Do you call that afast, a day when the Lord is favorable? No, this isthe fast I desire: To unlock fetters of wickedness…to let the oppressed go free…to share your breadwith the hungry….then shall your light burstthrough like the dawn and your healing shall springup quickly…

My family joins me in wishing each one ofyou a Shanah Tovah u’m’tukah – A Good andSweet New Year full of blessings and a meaningful, reflective and contemplative Yom Kippur. MayGod hear our pleas and our prayers!

B’shira –

Presidential Perspectives As I write this note we areslightly more than three weeksaway from celebrating the HighHoly Days for the third time inour new building. Our administrative staff isorganizing our myriad activitiesas the beautification committeeprepares the facility for the

Treasurer’s ReportAs I begin my second year asyour treasurer, it’s my pleasureto begin a monthly columndedicated to the health andprosperity of our temple’sfinances. Many people havesuggested that I make more ofan effort to reach out tocongregants. I’m not onlyhappy to do so, it’s my

responsibility! As an officer of a non-profit, I’mrequired to provide a full report of our finances to anymember who requests it.

Before I get into the nuts and bolts of it all,I’d like to thank everyone who has already paid theyear’s dues in advance, especially those who havepaid the sustaining amount of $2,500 or more. Thismakes my job much, much easier and I am sograteful to the many families who contribute their fairshare and more.

Although you’ll be receiving this report inSeptember, I’m writing it in August meaning that Ican only report on July’s finances. July may seemlike a long time ago but as I write this it’s the lastmonth for which I have a full report. It’s also usuallythe worst month in our financial year. Most people donot pay dues in July, since our fiscal year ends inJune and dues letters don’t go out until August. We’re required to make several payments in July fortaxes and insurance, and it’s usually one of the hottermonths meaning our electric bill is sky high. However, we expect this and with careful budgetingwe always make it through.

In July, I’m pleased to say that we ran adeficit of “only” $11,843 thanks to the efforts of ourfundraising committee and because of income fromoutside events. We were able to cover this deficitwith money from our general fund and withoutdipping into the line of credit we have for suchoccasions. I forecast our income in August will farexceed our expenses and we will be able to keep ourchecking accounts healthy so that we’ll be ready thenext time we run a deficit. We are still makingmortgage payments from capital campaigncontributions and expect to continue doing so untilOctober. At that time we will need to make sure thatwe have enough contributions to the MortgageRetirement Fund to cover our ongoing obligation.

My friends, I plan on continuing to report onour finances every month and it would be mypleasure to go over our summary reports or balancesheet in detail with any congregant who requests it.This year we will have many really big decisions tomake. I thank you all for your trust, for your patience, and most of all for your willingness to do your part.

Peace,

Stuart Sweet

Mental Health AwarenessIn Action

Our long lazysummer days come toan abrupt end as weprepare and then enjoythe most holy days ofour year. We searchour minds and heartsfor what we have donethat would have been

better undone, and what good we might havedone but didn’t. Those of us working to diminishstigma about mental illness and to bring comfortto those who live with mental disorders examineourselves as well. We are sure that by the end ofYom Kippur our energies will be revived and ourminds focused on continuing our work andbringing more of our Emanu El community intothis work.

Over the summer we brought togethersome of our young people to learn what mentalillness actually is and how we can help. Wetalked with parents as well. We went to themovies, watching “Inside Out,” and chatted overpizza about our understanding of that delightfulanimated film.

Last month the Homeless Liaison Officerwith the Redlands Police Department joined usat the temple to help us understand the plight ofthe homeless right in our town. Officer JenniferRamstad inspired us to do more to help and do itwisely.

Might you help? There is much to do.You might join in with others in creating aWelcome Home Team for the homeless who getoff the streets into new apartments. You mightwant to get Mental Health First Aid training asNancy did in June. The County of SanBernardino will welcome you into their freeclasses. Might you like to volunteer at theRedlands Clubhouse, “Our Place,” where adultsdiagnosed with mental illness can go and learnlife skills and enjoy the accepting company ofothers? How about supporting our intrepidwalker Larry Mink as he joins with the NationalAlliance on Mental Illness in their fundraiserearly in November? And what about wearing alime green ribbon from Each Mind Matters,California’s effort on mental health? Heidi is ourlocal supplier. When you wear the ribbon, peopleask you about it and you get to talk about mentalillness and help dispel stigma. You might evenhelp buy the ribbons. We wish you a beautiful and enriching NewYear.

New Names To Be Inscribed on Wall of Perpetual MemorialExtended Reservation Time

Our Wall of Perpetual Memorial is a most sacredplace in our temple. It was part of the main hallwayof our temple building in San Bernardino and isnow part of a beautiful Memorial Alcove in ournew temple edifice. Names are added to our Wall of Perpetual twiceeach year. The next dedication will take place aspart of an Erev Shabbat service on October 16,2015 When a name is inscribed on the Wall ofPerpetual Memorial it is read from the bema eachyear on the Shabbat closest to the Yahrzeit (theanniversary of death) and is included in the annualBook of Memory which is used at the fourYizkor/Memorial Services held during the year(Yom Kippur, Sh’mini Atzeret, the Conclusion ofPesach and Shavuot). Additionally, family membersare notified annually of the impending Yahrzeit andprovided with guidance on how they canappropriately mark the Yahrzeit of their loved one. The Wall itself is made of exquisite marble andnames are inscribed in gold leaf lettering.

The contribution for the inscription of a name onthe Wall of Perpetual Memorial is $650. formembers of the congregation desiring to place thename of a loved one on the Wall. The contributionfor non-members is $1250.00. It is also possible tomake pre-need arrangements for the placement of aname on the Wall after ones demise.
