Honor Roll — 2nd Semester 2015/16

T his week we will be welcoming students and staff forwhat I am confident will be another great year here at

Homewood-Flossmoor Community High School. On Aug.17, the Class of 2020 will eagerly enter our doors with wide-eyed anticipation ofwhat their future at H-F holds for them. I assure you that our administration andstaff are ready to embark on their high school journey with them, as we will con-tinue to provide our newest Vikings — and all of our students — with an outstand-ing education. Our mission, our greater purpose, remains clear: to promote eachstudent to reach their full potential. Our commitment to the overall success of ourstudents will again be evident this school year, as well as in the years ahead.

In preparation for the opening of school, necessary duties and tasks have beencompleted to ensure a smooth start to the school year. I, along with our currentadministrators and department chairpersons, are positioned to assume many ofthe duties and tasks of the principal's office. As we move forward into the schoolyear, the Board's Personnel Committee and administration will continue to eval-uate if additional supports are necessary, ensuring that the needs of our studentsand staff are being met. Each school year brings endless opportunities to ouramazing students, and we truly value the support and involvement of the entireH-F community.

For our district families, as concerns or questions arise throughout this schoolyear, please feel free to contact one of our assistant principals for assistance:Craig Fantin (708-335-5593, [email protected]) or Dr. Lawrence Cook (708-335-5604, [email protected]). As always, parents, students and community mem-bers are welcome to contact me directly at 708-335-5500, [email protected].

is fall, the new principal selection process for the 2017-18 school year willbegin. We will be involving as many stakeholders as possible through surveys, focusgroups and various interview committees. Stay tuned to our website for future up-dates regarding the principal search: highschool.org/news.

We are pleased to welcome Andrew Lindstrom back to our Board of Educa-tion this year. Andy — a life-long Homewood resident, financial expert, a class of1972 H-F High School alumnus, father of six H-F alumni and possibly thebiggest Viking fan of all — will serve the community at least until April 2017.Andy previously served from 2007-13 and chaired the Board's Finance Commit-tee for most of his term.

In other staffing news, two H-F departments will have new, outstanding de-partment chairs: English — Janet Daniels and World Language — Jenna De-Fazio. Read more about them, their experiences and plans for the year on page10. We look forward to their contributions and leadership this school year.

Lastly, I’d like to acknowledge and thank you for your support and involvement inour school. Community input, feedback and caring are what helped create District233 and its commitment to excellence nearly 60 years ago, and it is what will alwayssustain us and keep us moving forward as one of the best high schools in the coun-try. As in the past, I look forward to seeing you at the many exciting academic andextracurricular events that will showcase the talents and outstanding accomplish-ments of our students and staff. —Superintendent Dr. Von Mansfield

Bob Comstock, “I always remember how

Scott’s eyes would light up every time we in-

troduced new technology.” Scott took his pas-

sion and interest in technology further in his

career at the Pac-12 Networks. He is a two-

time National Emmy Nominee for Technical

Achievement in Broadcast for his role in pur-

suing innovative solutions to deliver high-qual-

ity sports programming. New technology

allows the Pac-12 to deliver first-rate productions from the more than 850 college sport-

ing events that are covered using only a few onsite operators while the majority of the

work is created from their main production studio in San Francisco.

Scott was a stand-out Viking, competing in speech and competitive drama. He took

home a State Championship for his acting role in Le Misanthrope in 2000 and another

State Championship as technical director for the 2002 Contest Play Orthello. In State

Speech competitions, he was the 2000 State Champion for his Performance in the

Round. He was a VTV anchor, station engineer, operations director and a WHFH Station

Manager. Scott was a member of the National Honor Society, Honor Roll, Gifted Pro-

gram and a Board of Education Distinguished Scholar. He graduated from the Univer-

sity of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign as a Chick Evans Scholar with his degree in

Broadcasting.

2016 Graduate called to U.S. Air Force Academy

S tudents from this year's class are headed all across the country — fromNortheastern University in Boston, Mass., to San Diego State University in

San Diego, Calif. One senior — Max Morales of Homewood — is heading to theprestigious U.S. Air Force Academy, located in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“My mom was in the Air Force until I was five, so I always thought I would servein some capacity. I assumed I would go to a civilian school, but then a few years agoI found out about the service academies,” says Morales.

He applied to both the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and the U.S.Air Force Academy. Like applicants at highly selective civilian schools, service-acad-emy applicants are required to have high GPA and ACT/SAT scores, but they mustalso pass a physical fitness test and medical screenings. ey must also have playedmultiple sports and have volunteered. e last requirement for admission is to benominated by a member of Congress or Senate or the President of the United States. Morales was nominated by U.S. Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

Morales also applied to — and was accepted at — civilian schools: the Universityof Illinois - Champaign-Urbana; Miami University of Ohio; the University of Wis-consin - Madison; the University of Iowa; Iowa State University; the University ofMinnesota - Minneapolis; Michigan State University; and Tulane University. He wasthen admitted to West Point and had accepted, until receiving admission also intothe Air Force Academy. He had quite a decision to make — in the end, however, hedecided to follow in his mother, Karen's, footsteps.

Morales will study nuclear engineering, then apply to graduate school, followedby his four years of military service. He has worked hard while at H-F, teachers say, taking difficult classes and earning a high GPA.

“Max challenged himself by taking an Advanced Placement class as a freshmanand excelling,” says Scott Aronson, H-F Social Science teacher. “I have also hadMax as a senior when he has done a stellar job exploring international relations andU.S. foreign policy. I am personally very excited for Max and see nothing but suc-cess in his future.” HF
