In September, our Board of Education saidfarewell to seven-year member JeanneMcInerney-Lubeck. Mrs.Lubeck served with passion, dignity and an unwaveringcommitment to do what is
best for students, staff, parents and the entire H-Fcommunity. Her love and commitment to the artswas no secret, but equally so was her determinationfor ensuring that all students succeed and have thenecessary resources to meet their needs. Our com-munity as a whole will sorely miss her individuality, sincerity and commitment to excellence. We wish herthe best of luck in her future endeavors. In October, Debbie L. Berman was appointed bythe Board of Education to fill the vacant board posi-tion. Mrs. Berman and her husband, Elliott, are resi-dents of Flossmoor and currently have one daughter,Melinda, attending H-F and one son, Louie, attend-ing Parker Junior High School. She has been part ofthe Homewood-Flossmoor community since 1968 andis a 1984 H-F alumnus. Mrs. Berman attended Bran-deis University, then earned her J.D. from HarvardUniversity Law School in 1990. She is currently a part-ner with the Chicago law firm of Jenner & Block LLP,focusing her practice on complex commercial litigation.
We look forward to the many future contributions Mrs. Bermanwill make as a new member on our Board of Education.
This issue of the Viking Connection provides a recapof the first quarter of this school year. Inside youwill see highlights from the academic, athletic, ex-tracurricular and alumni worlds of H-F. On page 2you will find a list of this quarter’s Honor Roll stu-dents, and on page 11 you will meet this year’s Na-tional Merit and National Achievement students.
On page 4, H-F’s AP Scholars in their various levelsare listed. This list of accomplished students in-cludes two of whom we are exceptionally proud:Maeve Coates Welsh, who is currently a freshmanat the University of Chicago; and Michael Gislason, who is currently a junior here at H-F. Both Maeveand Michael earned a perfect 36 — the highest possi-ble composite score — on the ACT college admis-sion and placement exam. This is no easy feat!According to the College Board, less than one-tenthof one percent of all ACT test takers earn this topscore. Congratulations to these young scholars!

Note from the Superintendent
Board changes and student accomplishments this fall
This past spring, the Washington Post re-leased its America's Most ChallengingHigh Schools report, which ranks the na-tion's secondary schools through an indexformula that's a simple ratio: the number ofAdvanced Placement, International Bac-calaureate and Advanced International Cer-tificate of Education tests given at a schooleach year divided by the number of seniorswho graduated that year. Homewood-Floss-moor Community High School District 233was ranked the top public high school inChicago’s South Suburbs at No. 57 in Illinoisand No. 1,577 in the country.According to the Washington Post, H-F’s in-
dividual Challenge Index has increased from1.489 last year to a score of 1.594 this year, in-dicating that more students are taking chal-lenging courses at the school. Now this fall, Newsweek / The Daily Beast
released its 2014 America’s Best HighSchools report, where Homewood-Floss-
moor was once again ranked one of the tophigh schools in the nation. In this report,Homewood-Flossmoor was ranked No. 26 inthe state of Illinois and No. 473 in the coun-try. It was one of only two Southland schoolsthat made the list; Carl Sandburg HighSchool ranked at No. 20.While both publications used figures
based on the 2012-13 school year, theNewsweek methodology differed from that ofthe Washington Post. Newsweek’s ranking wasbased on four categories: the school’s four-year cohort graduation rate; students’ col-lege-acceptance rate; students’ rigor/collegepreparedness; and student scores on college-entrance exams.“While the metrics are specific to each
publication, the results are the same,” saysSuperintendent Dr. Von Mansfield. “H-F isgetting the job done. We compete and rankamong the best schools in the nation.”Unlike the comprehensive Homewood-
Flossmoor, many of the top-ranked highschools in both reports have selective-enroll-ment policies and do not admit all studentsresiding in their boundaries. The completeNewsweek report can be viewed atwww.thedailybeast.com/features/2014/america-s-top-high-schools.html. The Wash-ington Post report is at apps.washingtonpost.com/local/highschoolchallenge.

Alumni excelling in world of theatre & entertainment 2014 Illinois State Report Cards Released
Residents will find several informa-tive metrics and features on the2014 School Report Cards, releasedOct. 31 by the Illinois State Board ofEducation. The interactive reportcard has been redesigned to bettergauge the progress of students andschools, especially in terms of meet-ing college- and career-readinessbenchmarks.
In addition to district success indi-cators, the new report card pro-vides a summary of junior yearstudent performance on the IllinoisPrairie State Achievement Exam(PSAE) that was taken in April 2014.This test provides a snap-shot pic-ture of student-achievement indica-tors. H-F utilizes the PSAE results inconjunction with a much larger andcomprehensive assessment frame-work — that not only captures theachievement level of each studentupon entry into the district, but alsocontinues to assess student growthmultiple times each year. This pro-vides teachers with the data neces-sary to ensure that all students aresupported and challenged with arigorous curriculum in order toreach their academic potential.
H-F’s complete report card — andreport cards from around the state— can be viewed at IllinoisReportCard.com. An at-a-glance version ofthe report is available to downloadat hfhighschool.org.

Alumni UpdateAs always, stories in the
Viking Connection
speak to the wide di-
versity of interests of
our students and we
find that is certainly true of our
alumni as well. In this issue, we’ll
showcase some of these exceptional
alumni, including recent graduates
pursuing passions first ignited during
their days as H-F students.
For a brief few weeks this fall, H-F
could boast that it had two serving
United States Ambassadors among its
alumni. Now we’re pretty confident
that 99% of high schools will nevercount an ambassador among their
ranks, but H-F alumni are anything
but ordinary.
In August, Andrew Schapiro, ’81, was
confirmed as the newest U.S. Ambas-
sador to the Czech Republic. Ambas-
sador Schapiro graciously extended a
once-in-a-lifetime invitation to recent
graduates Desmond Amuh, ’14 (Yale
University), and Jordan Culpepper, ’14
(Howard University), to attend his
swearing-in ceremony.
Weeks later, the Honorable Susan
Page, ’81, stepped down from the post
she’d held for the past three years, as
Ambassador to South Sudan. Since
resigning her post, Ambassador Page
has accepted a position in the Office
of the Special Envoy for Sudan and
South Sudan in order to continue her
work on behalf of the Sudanese peo-
ple. Congratulations to these and all
of our fine alumni!

Facility News
Winter is fast approaching, and the district is pre-pared to keep H-F’s buildings
warm and safe for students. In
2011, the original 50-year-old boil-
ers were replaced in the South
Building. This new heating plant’s
energy savings have been remark-
able and — when normalized for
seasonal weather temperature —
result in approximately a 30% natu-ral-gas savings. When maintenance
repairs are factored, the district has
estimated that it has seen a cost
savings of nearly $100,000 annually
due to the new heating system. ________
Now that the weather is turning
colder, H-F is pleased to announce
two fitness opportunities for com-
munity members to utilize through-
out the winter:
• Fieldhouse Indoor Track — District
233 residents are invited to walk,
jog or run the indoor track Mondays
through Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. on
days when school is in session
(pending any athletic events going
on that evening in the Fieldhouse).
There is no charge, but a valid ID
showing residency is required.
• Natatorium Pool — On Sundays,
4-5:30 p.m., H-F’s indoor pool is
open for a $1 open swim session. A
lap lane and lifeguards are avail-
able. For more information on H-F’s
community swim program, please
visit HomewoodFlossmoorSwim.org.

Principally Speaking
Dear Stakeholders of H-F Community High School:
Having just concluded the first quarter, it is with great excitement thatwe reach out to you to celebrate many of our successes. Homewood-Flossmoor was again acknowledged as one of the best high schools in thecountry by Newsweek/Daily Beast at No. 473. While summative rankingscan be seen as an indicator of a quality school — from my seat — the realvalue of any school is the work of the students and faculty on a dailybasis that often is not reflected in such global markers.
As a school, we recently honored our National Merit/Achievement award winners (at right), along with our Students of the Quarter: Ashley Asauskas, Mia Battle, Andrea Barrera, Toluwalope Efunkoya, Sydney Floyd, Alexia Hamilton, Jason Hampton, MaryKatherine Huffman, Roderick Jackson, Hanna Johnson, Imani Mason, Lauren Minga, Tylon Ross, Marcel Sams, Heather Smith, Ray Thomas and Ginger Washington. I am alsopleased to be able to congratulate our students involved with our recent theatrical produc-tions, concerts, and sports for both their commitment and quality of performances this fall. Our teachers continue to focus on methods to maximize the performance of our students
within their classrooms. Working with their colleagues and Department Chairs, conversationsat an increased frequency are occurring relative to student performance and instructional prac-tice. This work represents a natural progression from the concentration in past years on cur-riculum and assessment development. This year, all communities will be hearing about the PARCC assessments and
Common Core learning standards and their subsequent impact on classroom learn-ing. Both the PARCC and Common Core present challenges to all schools. Home-wood-Flossmoor has aligned to the ACT’s College Readiness Standards in all of ourclasses. Moreover — despite the change in format to an assessment taken online —we feel our students are prepared for PARCC because of the commitment we havemade to increasing rigor in our courses, which is best represented in the perform-ance of our students on other important assessments, such as the ACT and Ad-vanced Placement. I believe I would be remiss to not take this as an opportunity to thank the commu-
nity for your support last school year, which proved to be difficult in a number of areas. Withyour support, we were able to maintain our academic focus in the midst of grief and chal-lenges. At Homewood-Flossmoor High School, we are committed to school improvementthrough intentional efforts to improve student performance. Because of this, I believe the 2014-15 school year will be another year our community can celebrate all things H-F.
