In Lyon, France, the east bank, often referred to as the left bank, of the river has

undergone a transformation that has taken the former ports from a riverside car

park, to a varied public space that will facilitate relaxation and socialising and

encourage both city dwellers and wider Lyon residents to use sustainable transport

options. The 10ha site covers a stretch along the river of approximately 5km.

Bicycle lane at the level of Le Bretillod de la Lône, a

valuable natural space running along the river.

Le Bretillod de la Lône is a wetland environment

consisting of islets of alluvial sediment and riparian

woods. This natural space forms the vestibule

leading into the Tête d’Or Park which, with an

extension of 116 hectares, is the green lung of the

metropolitan area.

New pathway running past the Centre Nautique du

Rhône.

The Guillotière Bridge signals the most central and

representative point of the intervention. It is

occupied by more than 300 metres of tiered

seating, constituting a site of major significance, a

civic space which, with the river as its backdrop, is

now the venue for such multitudinous events as

concerts, parades, screenings, fireworks and even

the passing of the Tour de France.

Picnic tables at the Quai Claude Bernard section, in

front of the University.

Street furniture and fittings at the foot of the

retaining wall that separates the two main levels of

the riverside zone.

CONCEPT OF URBAN PLANNING

Study of the Masaryk Railway Station zone, which deals with the development and transport

links throughout the area, situated on the edge of the City historical reserve.

Current time captures Masaryk Station into repugnant situation. Today's station parameters are

not convenient to the requirements of modern railway operation, it is necessary to modernize the

track, overhead line and signaling equipment. On the other hand, the development of station is

awaited with hope due to upcoming projects, which will be directly related.

Since the mid-20th century, it was repeatedly considerating about the abolition of Masaryk

Station. Obstacle, which the track featured for surface transportation the station bridge resolved

in the 70s, however it practically separated the two parts of Prague at the same time. The

problem remains that the Prague railway junction in the city center is divided into two major

railway stations that are not sufficiently connected to the rail track, or public transportation.

These considerations are up to date at present and a number of plans to revitalize the station

had both variant while maintaining operation and function or changing the function of station.

After verification of all geographical, operational, technological and financial criterias and

considerations of relevant options was chosen as the winning solution alternative that is

considering the relocation of rail operation of Masaryk Station to Central Station with aim to

create an important railway junction with the possibility of creating rideable transport model. This

solution doesn´t preserve the original rail function in the space of the Masaryk Train Station, but

allows a complete transformation of the present area.

Given the time to necessary relation to the realisation of other projects of transport infrastructure

in the concept of the public transport in Prague and also technological and financial costigness

of the final solution can not currently be accurately define the time horizon of the plan.

Therefore, it was decided to develop a phased process of the final solution, which is in a period

preservation of railway operations of the Masaryk Station while reducing the current number of

tracks and the partial reduction of entry-level yard. This alternative allows to begin the

transformation of the Masaryk station independently on completion of the above mentioned final

solution of the transport infrastructure, expands development areas in the region, continuously

maintains station operation and offers conflict-free transition to the aim.

This solution offers optimum functional use for urban and mixed areas of commercial nature.

Assumes sensitive involvement and use of protected buildings in the context of the proposed

development and is committed to improving the environment in the central part of the city

through newly created parks and green areas. In terms of traffic solution emphasizes the need

for direct connection to a north-south highway along with the possibility of future improvement of

communication links.

Currently, the area in terms of functional use master plan designed especially for railway tracks

and equipment, as well as for transport equipment. Only a small part of the area is intended for

the development of activities different than activities related to transport and railway traffic.

Henning Larsen Architects, in collaboration with an international team consisting of Tredje Natur,

MOE and Railway Procurement Agency, has won Frederikssund municipality’s architecture

competition to design a regional train station and new quarter in the future town of Vinge. While

primarily serving to connect Vinge to the regional public transit system, the undulating, circular

urban hub is designed to prevent the railway from dividing the town in two halves.

“The proposal best connects the train station, nature and town structure as one united whole,”

lauded the selection committee regarding Henning Larsen’s winning scheme

Henning Larsen Architects has also created the 370-hectare overall masterplan for the town of

Vinge: “The fundamental idea for Vinge is to develop a new town where natural elements are not

simply added at the end, but integrated from the beginning of the town’s development. The new

Regional train station is an example of this holistic approach.”
