    UNITED WOMEN ENTREPRENUER PROGRAMME

    Background

This is Local registered Ngo based in Kenya, as per the words it means uniting women to form

programme that make them as entrepreneurs .

I Nancy Gitangu had the vision to form this Ngo and initially started as a CBO (Community based

organization) in 2008 later in the year 2010 had it registered as an NGO.

My background-l was born in a in Kiambu area in the year 1972,being the second born in a family of

seven was brought up in a Christian family and my parents were financially stable started school in 1977

and finished primary education in 1983 where l later joined high schoolin 1984,things turned around as

my lovely father started having affairs outside marriage. My mother who had resigned her secretarial

job to join him flourish his business was left empty as all the capital was used to covering the expenses

of this women, he married a second wife in 1995 and it was a turn around in my life, we could hardly get

the basics in school as my mum had to get ways and means to feed us. By Gods Grace l finished in 1987went through college, fate came in 1993 as my dad started becoming ill, in June 1994 he succumbed to

the disease and died later we discovered that he died of AIDS ,this was unbearable to her she couldnt

stand the shame in church as a senior elder, slowly she became weak, in April 1997 she passed on was

only 25years with the other sibling to take care. l was the only one who was working with a gross pay of

k2900,my elder brother applied for job and was lucky to get one in 2000,he worked we supported each

other but come 2001 April he died of throat cancer was helpless did everything to ensure this kids were

in school and in college, old men who take advantage when l narrated them my story but through it all

they are all done, but the bitterness that grew in me is of the innocent women who are suffering out

there, the single and young girls who cannot afford their day to day and someone somewhere is out

there taking advantage of an orphan child, the passion grew in me and l told God that this will be my joyto ensure that if not all l have rescued the young girls have stabilized the molested, single and widows.

My profession has been an accountant but my goal was to pursue the passion l had and to heal the

hearts of girl child. My board constitute of former bankers, community mobilizes who are from similar

background and two professionals who offer legal advises on matters that arise.

We have not been able to expand as such as l started of with a commercial loan of Ksh500,000 which

was quite expensive for a project that was not generating profit, with this l acquired some furniture and

an office and some members who are at 200.

My members constitute of widows, single parents and orphans, l have them team up in the group of fiveto ten members to act as guarantors to each other.

This are women/girls who are not accessible to our commercial banks as they have no collaterial nor can

they afford to make good their bank statement to acquire loans.

We have them save the little they can which is usually k 200 per month and l give them soft loans

ranging from Ks 5,000-50,000.-this they pay back at a minimum interest of 10% and in a period of an

year. Meanwhile we have to ensure that all the other factors are running which has been a challenge to

us. The revolving fund is minimal as the demand is quite high as this is majority of the people in our rural

areas. This calls for cash that is cheap enough to help us give time for them to grow and pay.

Its quite fulfilling to see a single parent who was living in shanty selling tomatoes worth 100/-,after the

loans she can afford buy in crates, later can afford sell in wholesale. Later you will find she can afford toacquire a small piece of land and built her small home. These women are focused and just need a hand

that can be patient to help them grow, nurture them and train them. We have others who rear chicken,

pigs etc, we have get professionals from the ministry of livestock to train them on how best to take care

of the poultry or livestock as such they grow everyday.

The fund given to them is returned at the rate 98% as we rarely have defaulters, they support each

other, when one of them has a calamity we team up with them and give goodwill to help her get back to

    the position she was before.

We would request for support to add up on the revolving fund to allow us move to other regions as our

certificate allow us to cover the whole country. We need to be mobile as most of the areas we visit are

rural areas where there are no means of communications, we need upgraded systems to help us capture

    the data.
