INTRODUCTION OF FOUNDER “SHIV NADAR” IS THE FOUNDER-CHAIRMAN OF HCL HCL (Hindustan Computers Limited) Known as father of India’s IT industry Native of MOOLAIPOZHI village in TUTICORIN

District (Tamil Nadu) PSG college of technology Coimbatore (Graduation) In 1968, he moved to Delhi where he worked as

engineer with DCM His dream was to startup his own company to

manufacture computer in India

HISTORY To raise fund initially, he floated a company called

“Microcomp Limited” to sell scientific calculators Along with five of his friends (Arjun Malhotra,

Subhash Arora, Ajai Chowdhry, DS Puri & Yogesh Vaidya)

Received support from the Uttar Pradesh government to setup their manufacturing in Noida.

Mr. Nadar founded HCL in 1976 with dream of making personal computers.

In 1977, due to the policies of Indian industries minister George Fernandes , global giants like IBM (even Coca-Cola left India ). Which gave major opportunity of HCL.

The very next year, HCL developed India’s first Micro Computer.

After expansion of business, Mr. Nadar decided to increase demand for IT education and Computer Training.

In 1981 he setup NIIT to impart high quality education. In 1984, government opened computer market and

permitted import of technology. HCL grabbed the opportunity to launch its own personal computer. In just two years, HCL became one of the largest IT company in India.

In 1991 HCL entered partnership with HP(Hewlett-Packard)to form HCL HP Ltd.

Looking beyond PCs, HCL tied up with Nokia for distributing cell phones and with Ericsson for distributing switches.

In 1996 HCL became an enterprise which comprises two companies listed in India, HCL Technologies and HCL Infosystems.

HCL Technologies was created from the R&D division of engineering to provide software services to global companies while HCL Infosystems focused on manufacture and sale of computer hardware in the Indian market.

As revenue from the hardware sector began to decline, Mr. Nadar felt the need to redesign HCL, for which massive capital was needed. To this end, HCL made an Initial Public Offering(IPO), which turned out to be a stupendous success.

He gave priority to global business and entered into partnership with British Telecom for an ambitious BPO venture in Ireland in 2001.

HCL has been managing orders at India’s National Stock Exchange.

In mid-90’s, HCL automated the NSE across 261 cities through a network of 3,000 tiny satellites.

HCL is involved in the making of Boeing 787-Dreamline.

Shiv Nadar is a member of the Executive Board of the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad.

He founded the SSN college of Engineering in Chennai which is premier institute in India.
