WELCA NEWS

May is here and spring has started to sprout! The church year begins to slow for summer. Someone reminded me how many members it takes to make our church active and alive. We all need to think and remember-each one needs a Thank you. No matter how large or small each job is, it all seems to get done. It is amazing to me when I hear of someone doing a job for many years and no one seems to know who does it. I am going to make special effort to thank as many as I can for what they do. Each is greatly appreciated. How about you? WELCA Board will take “a break” for the months of

June and July. If there are any needs during that time, just call me. SUNDAY FORUM & FELLOWSHIP (SFF )

Our church year fellowship time is winding down. During the month of May we honor mothers as well as graduates. We also acknowledge that summer is soon upon us. At the beginning of the month we welcome back men from the MN Adult/Teen challenge who will add music to our services and fellowship time sharing stories. The schedule for the month of May will look like this. 5/5: MN Adult/Teen Challenge: An organization to assist teens and adults in gaining freedom from chemical addictions and other life controlling problems by addressing their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. 5/12: The annual Mother’s Day Brunch 5/19: Senior Sunday: Recognition of our URLC graduating seniors 5/26: Likely one service. Gathering will be optional As always, coffee and cookies depend on volunteers for making and serving on Sundays. A calendar is passed around for sign-up. Please think about it when it comes your way. Coffee continues for the summer. Preparation and provision of treats is strictly volunteer. Put on your thinking caps for fellowship programs in the fall. Thank you, SFF Committee

Hope Coalition Request

For many years I have been honored to chair our

committee working with advocates from the Coalition

in Red Wing representing the Haven of Hope Women’s

Shelter and Kids Count. Hope is working with abused

women and children. Our church has not worked

directly with these families but with advocates who

work directly with them. Our duties have been to work

as a committee to obtain donation items needed. We

use our church bulletins and The Voice newsletter for

those requests.

Since the new temporary Hope Coalition (not the

shelter) have limited storage and parking—the 2

advocates have to come to Zumbrota to receive our

gifts this year.

I will mentor anyone interested in my position which

entails many fewer hours a few times a year. I will give

up my position at our church by July 1, hopefully, to co

-chairs willing to carry on our service to those in need

of our compassionate aid. Please pray about this

opportunity.

God’s Best, Barb Madison 732-5152

Coat Closet News Our closet held more than 50 jacket/hat/mitten “sets”

at the beginning of the cold weather season. Thanks

to all who contributed. Now it’s time to replenish our

supply, to keep local growing kids warm.

Please consider donating jackets (we can wash and

repair), and consider shopping at garage sales, resale

shops, donation centers (like the Salvation Army

stores), or your own closets to help us have coats on

hand for cold kids.

The most needed sizes are children’s 8-16, youth and

adult sizes. “Z-M Cougar” wear welcomed. There is

also a high demand for waterproof gloves for

elementary students.

The Closet is located on the lower level “hallway”

and items can be left there.

Thank you, Mary Goplen and Deb Wilkinson

Blessing of the Quilts

A “blessing of the quilts” took place during both ser-

vices Sunday, March 31.

For many years, the making and giving of warm and

useful quilts has been a ministry of United Redeemer.

Over the years, the quilts have been given to people

both locally and in

countries far away. In

recent years, 50-75

quilts have been made

annually by individuals

and by groups that

meet one morning a

month from September

through March. In recent years, the focus has been to

give the quilts in the area to people in need: Hope Co-

alition’s Haven of Hope domestic violence shelter in

Red Wing; Ronald McDonald House in Rochester; In-

patient Psychiatric Center in Rochester; and Zumbrota

Area Food Shelf. Individual persons or families, in-

cluding those that suffer losses from fires and other

hardships may also receive the gift of a quilt. Smaller

quilts are presented during baptisms at URLC.

Additional volunteers to assist with making of the

quilts are always needed and welcomed! (You don’t

need to operate a sewing machine to help – just tie

knots!) Donations to purchase material, batting and

yarn are also greatly appreciated. Checks can be

written out to “WELCA” with “quilting” written in the

memo line. If you have questions or would like to vol-

unteer to help, contact Leah Wichman-Hinz, JoAnn

Ring, or any member of the quilting ministry.

Thank you from Stay ‘n Play for allowing the kids

to use the basement space for indoor playtime

and to the congregation members for donating

snacks for the kids.

This marked our

3rd successful year

with about 20 kids

at each play date.

We are truly blessed to have such a large space

for the kids to run off their winter wiggles.

—Melanie Lodermeier

On 5/5, we will welcome back a group of young men from the Rochester organization MN

Adult and Youth Teen Challenge.

They visited us a year ago, adding music to our services. MN Adult and Youth Teen Challenge’s Mission

Statement is to assist teens and adults in gaining freedom from chemical addictions and other life controlling

problems by addressing their physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

The fellowship hall was double booked

with the Zumbrota Community Band who will be hosting a spaghetti feed.

So, following the 10:30 service on 5/5, Community Band member volunteers will feed these

young men as well as community members coming to support the band.

There will be a with a freewill offering supporting these young men.

Members of URLC are being asked to supply desserts.

We will need about 7 (9x13) desserts for this event.

If you are able to help out, please call me at 732-7552 or

email me at [email protected]
