2. New Vocabulary• baby shower: a woman's friends celebrate her new baby. They give gifts of baby items.

• bachelor party: a young man's last chance for a noisy party with his male friends before he gets married.

• block party: neighbours who live on the same street eat, play games, and socialize together.

• housewarming party: young people who have a new home invite their friends to come and see it.

• Barbecue: people cook food such as steaks, hamburgers, or hot dogs outside.

• slumber party: an overnight party where boys or girls play games, eat snacks, and stay up very late.

• surprise party: this is usually given for a birthday.

• catering company: a company that provides food services, esp. for parties. It prepares and serves food, and helps clean up after the party is finished.

• finger food: food eaten with the hands, such as chips, cookies and fruits.

• masquerade: a party where people wear masks and costumes.

• luau: a feast of Hawaiian food.

• safari: an overland journey or hunting expedition.

• At large, informal party among young people, it is acceptable for guests to bring a friend, even someone the hosts don't know. This would not be done at a dinner party, because the hosts need to know how many people will be eating there. If in doubt, a guest can call and ask if it is OK to bring someone.

• At an informal party, guests tend to arrive 15-30 minutes after the time the party is supposed to begin. Many people try to avoid being the first guest to arrive, because it makes them feel shy or uncomfortable. Many guests leave when they see others starting to go home. To be polite, hosts will often press guests not to go home "so early", even if it is quite late and the host is actually very tired!
