Problems Facing theAustralian Surf Industry

• Too many accounts - over distribution of products.

• Proliferation of major brand concept stores competing with

Independents. You’ve built their business and now you’re in

competition with them.

• Outlet stores - too much discount product.

• 40% GP x 4 stock turns simply does not generate enough free cash

flow to develop and improve your business.

• By developing “megastores”. Megastores increase traffic through both the store and ultimately to the shopping centres, resulting in higher turnover and more competitive rental rates.

• By buying in volume they can obtain better margins from their suppliers.

Increase your GP and your Stock Turns Increase your bottom line

• Support the majors (they are your bread and butter) - budget 50% of your purchases to them.

• Choose carefully your second tier brands - select a maximum of 4 and spend 20% of your budget with them.

• The remaining 30% should be used to purchase high margin product.

• This can include specials from the brands above, but you can’t always buy specials when you want.

• Buy closer to the market so that you can react to trends quickly and reduce the guess factor.
