SOCIAL: PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Pray for the kids who may feel like they’re too young to experience an adventure or do anything that would be considered “big.” Ask God to help kids understand that the adventure begins now and it starts with embracing who God made them to be.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWHAT YOU NEED: Offering container

WHAT YOU DO:• Welcome the kids to your group and encourage them to place their offerings in the offering container.• Call out a place (see list below for suggestions) and call on kids to name their favorite thing found in that place: o Beach o Park o Home o Library o Grocery store o Pool o School o Church o Grandma’s house o A friend’s house

2. CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTUREWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO:• Play a round of “Choose Your Own Adventure” by creating a story with the kids in your group. • Give one story starter from the list below and let the kid on your left add a line to the story.• Continue moving around the circle, encouraging each kid to add to the story. • Anything added must line up and make sense with the rest of the story. In other words, each line that’s added must move

the story along.• At random times throughout the story, say “PAUSE!” and give a new prompt to add to the story from the “Prompt List”

below. • After the “PAUSE!” and the new story prompt, the next kid has to add their line to it to fit the rest of the story. • If the prompts below are too farfetched for the story the kids are creating, say “PAUSE” and create your own new story

prompt. But try to make it super silly or farfetched if possible.

Story starters1. Little Johnny was a curious boy who loved to go fishing. One day . . .2. Toni loved her family and bugs. Of course, some days she loved bugs most, but that was because her little brother was

always getting into her stuff. One day . . .3. Andre is nine. He has one brother, one sister, two dogs, and no cats. Cats make him sneeze. But he really, really wants a

cat. One day . . .4. Today was not a great day. In fact, it was the worst day ever.

Prompts1. All of a sudden a big, giant snake slithered out.2. He/she froze, terrified. Right before his/her eyes, there was a huge (fill in the blank with something that makes sense). 3. And right then, his nose grew three sizes larger. Suddenly, he could smell things that were miles away.4. But the day started to turn around because finally . . .

WHAT YOU SAY:“Wow, that was quite an adventure! [Transition] Let’s head to Large Group where we’ll hear about someone who went on a pretty crazy adventure of his own a LONG time ago. Pay attention and see if you can tell me after Large Group who our adventurer is!”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

GROUPS: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions.

1. ABRAHAM’S ADVENTURE SEARCH (application activity / review the Bible story) WHAT YOU NEED: Labeled and numbered envelopes with “Clue Cards” Activity Pages in them

WHAT YOU DO:• Hide the numbered envelopes in the following places: o Card 1: In a corner o Card 2: Under the trash can o Card 3: Somewhere near the door o Card 4: Under a table or chair o Card 5: Under your small group rug or hidden somewhere in your group’s gathering spot o Card 6: Behind the SGL’s back o NOTE: If you have multiple 2nd-3rd grade groups in one room, write your name on the outside of each envelope

so kids only collect their own group’s envelopes.• Send your group on an adventure to find six envelopes hidden around the room. Inside each envelope is a Bible story

review question and a CLUE to find the next card. They must use the clues to collect all the envelopes and cards.• Tell kids they must go in the correct order of the cards. In other words, they have to find card #1 before they try to find

the other cards. Give them a couple hints to get them to look in the correct corner for card #1. • Once all six cards are collected, kids must come back to the circle to discuss the six questions from the story found on

the cards.

Answers to the Questions:1. What was Abraham’s name BEFORE he was Abraham? (Abram)2. God told Abraham to leave his home and travel where? (When God told Abraham to pack up, he didn’t tell him where

he was going!)3. God told Abraham he would make his name what? (Great)4. How do you think Abraham’s wife responded when he told her they would have to move AND he didn’t exactly know

where they were going? (She might have thought he was crazy. Or maybe she trusted God from the beginning like Abraham did.)

5. Did Abraham listen to God and follow Him? Why? (Yes, Abraham left just as God told Him to because he trusted God.)6. What did God promise Abraham? (“I will make you into a great nation. And I will bless you. I will make your name great.

You will be a blessing to others. I will bless those who bless you. I will put a curse on anyone who puts a curse on you. All nations on earth will be blessed because of you,” Genesis 12:2-3 NIrV.)

WHAT YOU SAY:“That was a fun adventure to find our questions today! But that adventure was nothing compared to the one Abraham went on. Can you imagine how you would respond if God told you to pack up all your things and go ‘to a country I will show you’? Seems pretty crazy, doesn’t it? God might not call you to move away without giving you a map to follow, but it’s still true that [Bottom Line] God made you for an adventure! He took the time to create you in a unique and special way and

He has so many awesome adventures ready for you. Your job is to ask Him to show you what that adventure is. I promise God has a plan for your life, and you don’t want to miss it!

[Make It Personal] (Tell the kids in your group about an adventure you knew God was calling you to. Maybe you went to a foreign country on a mission trip. Maybe you moved to a new city for a job or for college. Maybe volunteering with these kids seemed like an awesome adventure when you signed up! Make sure the example you give tells the kids something about your own uniqueness and, of course, make sure it is age appropriate.) “I’m so glad I listened to God and followed Him on this adventure! And you can too because [Bottom Line] God made you for an adventure.”

2. ADVENTURE PLANNING (application activity)WHAT YOU NEED: White board, dry erase marker, paper, markers

WHAT YOU DO:• Ask the kids in your group to name some places they go or activities they participate in pretty much every day. List their

answers on the white board. If possible, try to take at least eight answers.• Hand out a piece of paper and a marker to each of the kids.• Assign each kid one of the places or activities listed on the board and instruct kids to write down all the things they

would need for those places or activities. • After they’ve had a minute or so to compile a list, let each child share their place or activity and one item on his/her list.• Ask: What is a possible adventure in this everyday situation? o Examples: Activity: playing basketball in the neighborhood; Item: basketball; Adventure: Your friend twists his

ankle going up for a jump shot, so you . . .• Repeat, using the other examples as time and interest allow.

WHAT YOU SAY:“If you were Abraham and God told you to pack up and leave your home to head to a place He would show you, what would you take? (Pause for responses.) The adventures in our lives don’t always include a long trip or a hike in the woods or a big crazy expedition. We can find everyday adventures all around us if we choose to pay attention. And just like He was with Abraham, God will always be with you when you choose to follow Him. He made you so special! [Bottom Line] God made you for an adventure.”

3. GEARS PART 2 (memory verse activity)WHAT YOU NEED: Bibles, “Gears!” memory verse cards from Week 1; “gear” gadget from last week (optional)

WHAT YOU DO:• Pass out the Bibles so that every kid can see one. • Look up Ephesians 2:10 and call on kids to read the verse aloud.• Point out the second part of the verse: “He created us to belong to Christ Jesus.” Ask: o Who is the “He” in this verse? (God) o Why did God make us? (To belong to Jesus)

• Explain that God made each of uniquely us so that we could have a relationship with Him. And we can do that by trusting Jesus!

• Scatter the “Gears” memory verse cards around your small group space or around the room, if possible.• Line kids up. Then, one at a time, let kids run to a card, pick it up, and bring it back to the group until all the cards have

been collected. • To make each “run” more of an adventure, stop each kid before he runs and give him a challenge: o Hop on one leg o Use only one hand o No using your eyes (another team member will need to guide him) o Keep your head up (no looking down) when you grab your card• Encourage the kids to put the gears in verse order and read the verse together.

WHAT YOU SAY:“We are God’s creation, created to belong to Christ Jesus! God wants to have a relationship with us! That means that when we face all the adventures—big or small—ahead of us, God will be with us! So we won’t ever be alone. We can have confidence like Abraham that God will show us how He’s uniquely made us to do some amazing things! [Bottom Line] God made you for an adventure.”

PRAY AND DISMISSWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO: • Ask the kids to pair up.• Once in pairs, have the kids share an adventure they’d love to go on.

WHAT YOU SAY:“You talked about some pretty amazing adventures! Who knows where you’ll go or what you’ll do someday! Well, wait, who DOES know? That’s right: GOD! He already knows about the plans He has for you. Your job is to continue to learn how He’s made you and to trust Him to show you all the adventures ahead. I’m so glad that [Bottom Line] God made you for an adventure. Let’s pray.

“God, we love You. Thank You for the reminder today that You are with us and that You have made us for adventure! Help us to trust You like Abraham did. Show us where You want us to go and how You’ve uniquely created us for all the adventures ahead. In Jesus’ name, amen.” As parents arrive to pick up, encourage the kids to tell their parents or guardians about the crazy adventure Abraham went on in our Bible story today!
