SOCIAL: PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to give kids strength to stand up against peer pressure, trusting and obeying even when their friends around them aren’t doing the same. Pray that kids would have the confidence to do what’s right in spite of what others might be doing.

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWHAT YOU NEED: Offering container, paper (optional), markers (optional)

WHAT YOU DO:• Invite kids to put their offerings in the offering container as they arrive. • Ask kids: If you could have any pet, what would you choose and why? Would you choose a dog? a cat? a monkey? a

kangaroo? What about a parro-key? (That’s a half-parrot-half-monkey creature that can talk, climb trees, and fly.)• Encourage kids to create their own animals. • Optional: Give kids paper and markers to draw their creatures and see if the rest of the group can guess each other’s

creations.

2. CHOOSE THIS OR THATWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO: • Call out either/or options for the kids. Stand as you say the first option, and sit when you say the second option.• Kids will stand or sit depending on the option they choose. For example, you say, “Would you like a hamburger or a hot

dog?” (As you say, “hamburger,” stand up, and when you say, “hot dog,” sit down.) • Listed below are either/or options, or you can let kids can take turns making up options: o Pepsi® or Coke® o Traveling by boat or airplane o Be good looking or funny o Two local sports teams, such as University of Michigan or Michigan State o Two popular music artists, such as Bieber or 1D o Band or choir

WHAT YOU SAY:“We make a lot of choices in a day. Sometimes it is easy to decide what choice to make and sometimes it can be very difficult to make the wise choice. [Transition] Let’s head to Large Group to hear about a man who made a wise choice to obey but it certainly wasn’t easy.”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

GROUPS: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions.

* 1. TAKE ONE! ACTION! (application activity / review the Bible story)WHAT YOU NEED: Supplies to build an ark, blue sheet, bin of toy animals, fake food, colored paper, costume pieces, snacks (optional)

WHAT YOU DO:• Kids will review the Large Group story by acting it out. The objective is to dig deeper into the story. It is an opportunity

to consider obstacles Noah faced as he obeyed God. Below is a sample of how you might guide kids to reenact the story: o Pick a volunteer to be Noah. Ask kids, “What did God tell Noah to do?” (Build an ark) “Why an ark? And why

Noah?” (God was sending a flood to wipe out all living things. Noah walked with God and was righteous. Noah found favor in God’s eyes.) Who did God say would be on the ark with Noah? (His family and two of every animal.)

o Pick a few volunteers to be Noah’s family. The remaining kids are “everyone else” in the story. o Using the boxes, instruct “Noah” and “his family” to begin building the ark. Remind them to make it big enough

for all the animals and all their food. o While “Noah and his family” are building, sit in a circle with “everyone else” and talk about what they might be

doing while Noah is building the ark. (Living life without thinking about the potential of a flood, hanging with friends, eating their favorite foods, playing games, etc.)

o Ask kids to think about how everyone else might have treated Noah and his family. “Do you think they offered to help? Did they make fun of him? Maybe they ignored him?” Periodically, shout over to Noah and ask how the building is going. Comment on how you wish they could join you in sitting around, but they are clearly too busy preparing for disaster. Keep asking Noah if they are done yet.

o Optional: Provide a basket of snacks to eat as you talk about life with everyone else. If you provide snacks, periodically shout over to Noah and his family, commenting on how tasty the snacks are and how it is too bad they can’t join you.

o Once the ark is complete, ask the group what happened next. (Noah filled the ark with animals and food. Then Noah and his family got on the ark.) Dump out a bin of toy animals and toy food, and Noah and his family start loading up the ark with stuffed animals and food before they get on the ark.

o Then the rain came. Have everyone else use the blue sheet to make waves for the ark. Be prepared, should everyone else decide to act as if they are drowning, but don’t encourage them to!

o As the water rises, ask kids: “How long did it rain?” (40 days) “But did Noah and his family get off the ark in 40 days?” (No) “Why?” (They had to wait for the water to dry up so they could find land!) So the waves died down and the ark rested on land again.

o Noah and his family got off the ark and worshipped God. “What did God promise?” (He will never flood the earth again.) “And what was the sign of his promise?” (A rainbow) Let kids use the colored paper to create the rainbow.

o If you had snacks, be sure to share them during the wrap-up conversation with Noah and his family, and comment on what a good job they did obeying and focusing on the task they were given.

• Adaptation: If you prefer to provide only one or two sets of supplies, you can do this activity with all the groups in the room together.

WHAT YOU SAY:“Noah decided to trust and obey God even when others didn’t. Do you think Noah’s decision to build an ark was a popular choice? What might have been some of the obstacles Noah and his family faced? What made building the ark difficult? (Watching other people live life and have fun instead of building an ark, knowing everyone else was living without being concerned about the impending flood, being the only family building an ark, not being sure how it would work out, what if the ark didn’t float, etc.)

“It is interesting that just because a choice is the wise choice, that doesn’t mean it will be the popular choice or that it will be easy to do. Noah made a wise choice to trust and obey even when his friends and his neighbors didn’t. Being obedient and trusting those who lead you by doing what you are asked to do can be a hard thing to do. But just like Noah, being obedient is a wise choice we should make too. You and [Bottom Line] I should trust and obey even when others don’t.”

2. DON’T LOSE FOCUS (application activity)WHAT YOU NEED: Timer or mobile device

WHAT YOU DO:• Assign one kid to be “Noah.” Noah must stare straight ahead without blinking, smiling, or laughing.• Everyone else in the group will try to distract Noah and get him to smile or blink. The only rule is that no one can touch

Noah.• If Noah makes it for 30 seconds without blinking or smiling, he wins. Play several times giving everyone a chance to be

Noah.• Note: If you have a large group, several kids can be Noah while the rest of the group tries to make all of them smile. This

will be tricky because if any of the Noah’s smile or blink, they’re all out!

WHAT YOU SAY:“This was a fun and kind of ridiculous game. When you were Noah, it was hard not to laugh with everyone around you being so goofy, but it was important to stay focused if you wanted to win. It is difficult to stay focused and do what you are asked to do when there are a lot of distractions. Obedience is especially hard when the people around you don’t trust and obey their leaders. It is hard to obey your parents when their rules are different from your friends’ parents’ rules. It is hard when your friends are making fun of your teacher and you don’t join in the conversation. It is hard to be different from the people around you. And when you trust and obey God, just like Noah, sometimes you will look different.

“So why do we do it? Why bother being different when it costs us so much sometimes? (Give kids a moment to reflect on this and answer the question in discussion format. Some answers may include: it’s what God calls us to do; it’s the right thing to do; a life following Jesus looks different sometimes.)

“So when it comes to the leaders in your life, you and [Bottom Line] I should trust and obey even when others don’t. Showing obedience and trusting those who lead you by doing what you’re asked to do is one way to show people you trust God.”

3. RAINBOW VERSE (memory verse activity)WHAT YOU NEED: 1 set of “Rainbow Verse Phrases,” markers, Q-tips®/cotton swabs; about 5 for each kid, straws; 1 for each kid, painter’s tape

WHAT YOU DO:• Pair kids into teams of five and assign each team a different color. • Give each team 6-10 Q-tips. Instruct kids to color the Q-tip sticks their team color so they can distinguish their Q-tips

from the ones belonging to opposing teams. • Give each kid a straw.• Tape a line on the floor, long enough for all kids to stand shoulder to shoulder.• Spread out the verse phrases on the floor a few feet away from the line.• While standing or kneeling behind the line, kids will launch a Q-tip by blowing it through the straw and trying to land it

on one of the verse phrases. • If they miss a phrase, they can retrieve their Q-tips and keep trying.• The team to get a Q-tip on each of the phrases first wins.• Adaptation: To save space, allow groups to work together as teams against one another.

WHAT YOU SAY:“God had a message for Noah: Go build an ark. Through Noah’s story, God gives us a message too. God hasn’t asked me to build an ark, but He does ask me to trust Him and obey Him. God has put leaders in my life to keep me safe, to watch over me, to teach me. [Bottom Line] I should trust and obey even when others don’t, and so should you. Our memory verse reminds us it is important to obey the leaders God has put in our lives.” [Make It Personal] (Name a few of the leaders in your life. Share an age-appropriate example of when you did what your leader asked you to do even when your friends/coworkers/family didn’t. This is an opportunity to reinforce that obedience is a virtue for everyone—not just kids.)

If you lead mostly older kids, consider asking these discussion questions:• Sometimes it is very hard to be obedient when others around you aren’t. What are some things you can do when the

people around you are encouraging you to be disobedient or to make unwise choices? (This is an opportunity to talk about ways kids can handle peer pressure. For example, take a breath before you respond, take a moment to think through the consequences and perhaps encourage your friends to look at ALL the consequences, pray, be confident, walk away, seek support from a trusted leader, etc.)

• How does being obedient and trusting those who lead you by doing what you’re asked to do affect how others see you? How does being disobedient affect how others see you?

PRAY AND DISMISSWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO: • Ask kids to close their eyes and bow their heads so they won’t be distracted by what is going on around them.

• Guide them to think of a situation in their life where they are having difficulty obeying. • Instruct kids to pray to God silently, asking God for guidance to make the wise choice and obey the leaders He has put in

their lives.• Close prayer time with a quick prayer aloud.

WHAT YOU SAY: “God, thank you for the Bible—Your Word—and for the story of Noah. We know, God, You can be trusted no matter what, and we thank You for the leaders you have put in each of our lives. Guide us to be obedient. Remind us to trust and obey even when others don’t. Amen.”

Give each child a GodTime card. Pass out Parent Cue cards as adults arrive to pick up. Ask kids to tell their parents what the Bottom Line is for this week: [Bottom Line] I should trust and obey even when others don’t. Suggest spending a moment this week as a family discussing what they can do when the people around them are encouraging them to be disobedient and to make unwise choices.
