SOCIAL: PROVIDING TIME FOR FUN INTERACTION Welcome kids and spend time engaging in conversation and catching up. Get ready to experience today’s story.

Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Pray that your kids would not be discouraged or give up when doing something that ends up being bigger than they thought. Ask God to give your few the grit and determination to keep going through a really big task!

1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEAWHAT YOU NEED: Offering container

WHAT YOU DO:• Collect kids’ offerings as they arrive.• Ask kids if they’ve ever done something really big or long, such as riding a roller coaster, going on a hike up to the top of

a mountain, or ridden in a car for a really long time.• Ask them what the hardest part was and what helped them keep going or what helped entertain them if they had to

endure something.

2. THIS IS THE BOX THAT NEVER ENDSWHAT YOU NEED: Shoebox filled with small objects

WHAT YOU DO: • Show the kids the box and the objects inside. Ask if anyone wants to guess how many things are in it. • Then let kids count, one by one, each object out of the box. • Keep encouraging them to finish and not to leave anything uncounted.

WHAT YOU SAY:“There are sure A LOT of things in this box. This could seriously take forever to count every single one of these objects. The job is much bigger than I originally had thought! [Transition] Today we are going to learn about another job that was bigger than some people thought. I wonder if they ever finished. Let’s go find out!”

Lead your group to the Large Group area.

GROUPS: CREATING A SAFE PLACE TO CONNECT Create a safe place to connect and learn how the Bible story applies to real life experiences, through interactive activities and discussion questions.

1. SO MANY DOORS, SO LITTLE TIME (application activity / review the Bible story) WHAT YOU NEED: 3 cones, 1 jump rope, 1 hula hoop, poster board door

WHAT YOU DO:• Choose four volunteers to help with the obstacle course: two kids to hold either side of the jump rope for a limbo station,

one kid to hold out the hula hoop where each kid will climb through, and one kid to hold the door which each kid will knock on.

• Set up the cones as the first obstacle, jump rope limbo as second, hula loop as third, and the door last. (Place the three cones in a straight line with two feet between them each. Kids will have to run a zigzag line to get around the cones.)

• Instruct the rest of the group to form a line where they can each have a turn going through the obstacle course. • At some point, switch out kids who are holding the obstacle course objects so they may get a turn to do the course.• The goal is to get through the objects and knock on the door.

WHAT YOU SAY:“Awesome job tackling that obstacle course! Peter also had to defeat many obstacles to knock on every door so they could tell people about Jesus. Can you imagine how big THAT job was? Knocking on all those doors and wanting to tell everyone about Jesus was a HUGE job! BUT they let nothing stop them because they knew their job was so important. Just like Peter and John, we can [Bottom Line] keep going even when the job is bigger than you think. [Make It Personal] (Describe a time that you wanted to finish something and the job was way bigger than you thought.) [Bottom Line] Keep going even when the job is bigger than you think.”

* 2. BRING IT ON (application activity)WHAT YOU NEED: Zip-top bags, blue pom-poms, purple pom-poms, permanent markers

WHAT YOU DO:• Hand out the plastic baggies and a permanent marker to every kid. Before passing everything out, make sure kids

understand what “permanent” means and warn them to be super careful with the markers.• Lead them to do the first steps as a group: o Draw a smiley face in the upper left hand corner of the bag. o Draw a “finish line” flag at the bottom right hand corner. o Help them draw a diagonal line from the kid to the finish line.• Hand out enough blue pom-poms (or whichever color you have to use as the “main” color) for kids to fill their bags.• Give each kid one purple pom-pom (or whichever color you’ve chose to use as the single color) to place inside their bag

near the smiley face.• Encourage kids to try to move the purple pom-pom from the smiley face to the finish line flag, maneuvering it with their

fingers through the bag.

WHAT YOU SAY:“The sea of all of these blue pom-poms is much bigger than our one purple pom-pom. But you guys have done a great job sticking with it and helping it get to finish line on the other side. You know, there are going to be times in our lives when we face things that seem way too big for us, like when you jump off the diving board at the pool or when you want to stick up for a friend who’s getting picked on at school. Can you think of other things that seem really big and hard to do? (Allow as many kids that want to answer have a turn.) You all gave some amazing examples! Remember that no matter what you face you can [Bottom Line] keep going even when the job is bigger than you think.”

3. THE LEANING TOWER OF SCRIPTURE (memory verse activity)WHAT YOU NEED: Building blocks

WHAT YOU DO:• Review the memory verse with your few.• Stack a block for each word you say of the memory verse, attempting to build a tower.• See how much of the verse you can say and how high you can stack the tower before it falls down.• Repeat the verse while building a new stack. Let kids take turns putting the next block on the stack and saying the next

word. If your kids have started to actually memorize the verse, you can “require” them to say the next word before getting the privilege of adding the next block.

WHAT YOU SAY:“You all got so high as you were saying God’s Word! Did anyone else find that the bigger we got, the harder it was to keep going? (Pause.) Me too! But way to go on not giving up, even though it was a big job! Whether you are building a huge tower with blocks or are faced with a something hard test at school, you can [Bottom Line] keep going even when the job is bigger than you think.”

PRAY AND DISMISSWHAT YOU NEED: No supplies needed

WHAT YOU DO: • Tell your few that God loves to help us with big jobs and it makes Him happy when we talk to Him. • Ask if anyone wants to volunteer to ask for God’s help doing things that seem really big.• Then close the group in prayer together.

WHAT YOU SAY:“God, today and every day I am so thankful that You never give me more than I can handle with Your power and Spirit! Whether I am building the tallest skyscraper in the entire world or I’m facing the biggest bully in school, You always give me what I need to keep going. Don’t ever let us forget to lean on You and that we can always [Bottom Line] keep going

even when the job is bigger than you think.”

As adults arrive to pick up, have each kid show their parents the baggie they created. Ask them why it was so hard to get the purple pom-pom to the other side. Remind them that this week they can [Bottom Line] keep going even when the job is bigger than you think.
