Blessing of the Backpacks
Children, youth, and all students are invited to come forward, bringing your backpacks with you.
Today, we have before us backpacks to be carried to and from school by the children and youth gathered here. These backpacks will contain work to be done, work that’s been returned, books to be read, and tools to complete homework. Notebooks, pencils, pens, computers, crayons, rulers, scissors, glue sticks, and other items used for school work will find their way in and out of these backpacks. Some days, so much stuff will fill these backpacks that the student may find it difficult to walk. Other days, they will be nearly empty and light. But on each and every day, these backpacks represent work required of the students gathered here. And, as in every aspect of our life, we bring these before God for blessing at this time.
Litany
When it’s the night before going to school, and I’m picking out my clothes and making sure I have all my school supplies…
Jesus is with me.
When I’m waking up and eating a healthy breakfast to start the day…
Jesus is with me.
When I’m on my way to school…
Jesus is with me.
When I meet my teachers and new friends in my class…
Jesus is with me.
When I’m playing with my friends at recess…
Jesus is with me.
When I am struggling with something difficult at school…
Jesus is with me.
When I am feeling left out or alone…
Jesus is with me.
When I’m telling my family about my day at school…
Jesus is with me.
When I’m praying at night and thanking God for my family, my friends, and my school…
Jesus is with me.
Let us pray together:
God of Wisdom, we give you thanks for schools and classrooms and for the teachers and students who fill them each day. We thank you for this new beginning, for new books and new ideas. We thank you for sharpened pencils, pointy crayons, and crisp, blank pages waiting to be filled. We thank you for the gift of making mistakes and trying again. Help us to remember that asking the right questions is often as important as giving the right answers. Today we give you thanks for these your children, and we ask you to bless them with curiosity, understanding, and respect. May their backpacks be a sign to them that they have everything they need to learn and grow this year in school and in Sunday School. May they be guided by your love. All this we ask in the name of Jesus, who as a child in the temple showed his longing to learn about you, and as an adult taught by story and example your great love for us. Amen.

Church Calendar This Week The calendar is available online at www.npcovenant.org/calendar and is updated as changes occur.
We welcome all people to begin or deepen their relationship with Christ through worship and study. We invite all believers to fully participate in the life and ministry of our church as members, leaders,
and lay staff. We celebrate the gifts and presence of diverse Christians among us—whether those differences be race, ethnicity, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, ability,
or socioeconomic status. We are blessed by our diversity and are unified in Christ.
