Type Basics• Typography: The design of letterforms and the arrangement of them
in two-dimensional space.
• Type font: A complete set of letterforms, numerals, and signs in a particular face, size and style. (Ariel 12 pt. – AaBbCcDd…12345…@#$%&…)
• Type style: Modifications that create design variety while retaining the essential visual characteristic. (AaBbCcDd… AaBbCcDd… AaBbCcDd…)
• Uppercase: The larger set of letters or capitals. (ABCDEFG)
• Lowercase: The small set of letters. (abcdefg)
• Point size: The height of the type.

• Baseline: Defines the bottom of capital letters and of lowercase letters.
• Ascender: The part of lowercase letters that rise.
• Descender: The part of lowercase letters that falls below the baseline.
• Counter: Space enclose by the strokes of a letter.
Types of Type
• Serif: Type that has ending strokes. (Garamond)
• Sans Serif: Type without ending strokes. (Ariel)
• Script: Type that most resembles handwriting. (Edwardian Script)
• Novelty: Type that is trendy and modern which is hard to read in large amounts. (Curlz MT)
