Serifs – noun – (ser-if)  A small line attached to the end of a stroke in a letter or symbol.

Types of serifs:! Gothic, Transitional, Bracketed, Tuscan, Glyphic, Wedge, Slab, Cursive, Oldstyle, Hairline, Sans-serif (without serifs).

The process of adjusting the spacing between characters in a proportional font, usually to achieve a visually pleasing result. Kerning vs Tracking

Kerning Adjusts the space between individual letter forms. Tracking Adjusts spacing uniformly over a range of characters

Refers to the distance between the baselines of successive lines of type. The term leading originated in the days of hand typesetting, when thin strips of lead were inserted into the forms to increase the vertical distance between lines of type. The term is still used in modern page layout software such "as QuarkXPress and Adobe InDesign.

Web safe fonts are those fonts likely to be present on a wide range of computer systems, and are

used by web content authors to increase the chance that content will be displayed in

their chosen font.

Typography is essentially the study of how letterforms interact on a surface, directly relating to how the type will "be set when it eventually goes to press.

Typography is actually a subset of lettering, because it is the study of letters applied to typefaces.

Lettering can be simply defined as “the art of drawing letters”. Often lettering is hand-drawn, with pens, graphite "or brushes, although some people start their work directly "in Adobe Illustrator.

Engraving and similar arts are related to lettering.

Know your font families

Combine a sans-serif font with a serif font

Combine a serif font with

a san-serif

Combining two similar fonts is "

Contrast is the key

Stick to two fonts. Only go for three if you must

Don't mix different moods

Combine fonts of complimentary moods and of

similar time eras

Use different weights of fonts in the same family

Please avoid the following fonts:

Comic sans, Papyrus, Curlz, Viner, Kristen, and

ornamental fonts.
