Differential WBCC
• Record each type of WBC you see, until you have recorded 100 cells.
• Calculate percentages
Blood Groups
• Why is it important to match blood groups for donors and recipients?
• Agglutination: the clumping of RBC’s • Antigens: surface molecules on RBC’s• Antibodies: proteins in the plasma that
attack “foreign” bodies
ABO Blood Group
• Based on the absence or presence of 2 major antigens on RBC surfaces:– Antigen A– Antigen B
• The presence/absence of these antigens combines to form 4 blood types:1.Type A = A antigens only (41%)2.Type B = ??? (9%)3.Type AB = ??? (3%)4.Type O = ??? (47%)
ABO Blood Group, continued…..
• If you lack antigen A on your RBC’s, then you will have antibody A in your plasma.
