One of the Black River’s tributariesstarts in Langa and then it snakespast the Athlone Waste Water Treat-ment Works.

On its winding journey through ur-banised Cape Town, the polluted rivercollects “nutrients”, which is food forthe alien plant known as water hya-cinth.

These hyacinths grow uncontrollablydownstream and the City of CapeTown’s roads and stormwater depart-ment spends approximately 30 percentof the total annual cleaning budget of allrivers, canals and catchpits on the re-moval of these plants.

Which makes one ask; why remove itat all?

Duncan Daries, acting director of theroads and stormwater department, an-swers: “One of the reasons, from an en-gineering perspective, is to improve thehydraulic functioning of the river. Inother words, it improves the flow dy-namics of the river.”

The Black River, which becomes theLiesbeek River north of the N2, is cur-rently undergoing one of these cleaningoperations.

Rugby resident Pincus Sanzul accom-panied TygerBurger to the river thisweekend just to show how bad the hya-cinth situation really is.

Next to the M5 it literally looks likea river of luscious greenery.

Daries says the reason for this is thefact that the river is in a “continuousstate of eutrophication”.

He explains: “That means it has highlevels of nutrients due to the dischargeof the Athlone Waste Water TreatmentWorks as well as the discharge of grey

and black water from the informal set-tlement in Langa.”

He adds that this plant has no preda-tors in the country to control growth.

As a result, the city must clean theriver once a year by means of a special-ised excavator to remove the bulk of thegrowth. It is followed up by a hand crew(on a boat or raft) to clear the hyacinthsthat the excavator could not reach orwas unable to remove.

The crew also sometimes works inconjunction with the excavator to drawthe floating hyacinths towards it.

Sanzul wonders why the piles of deadhyacinth is left next to the river to rot,but Daries responds by saying that it isonly left to dry and will be transported

to the landfill site in good time.Daries elaborates: “Water hyacinths

consist of about 80 percent of water. Ifit is left to dry, it reduces to about 20 per-cent of its mass. It would, therefore, beabout 80 percent cheaper to cart the dryhyacinths to the landfill site.”

Jan Odendaal, the CEO of Green forLife, feels very strongly about achiev-ing cleaner rivers.

“Every single river in South Africa ispolluted and they have become an em-barrassment for the country. God’s cre-ation is inourhands, but ourgreedinesshas a lasting effect on our rivers. Peoplemust know that when you pollute a riv-er then you are really just shootingmankind in the foot!” he exclaims.

Copper cable thieves have targeted apark next to Paarden Island and JustinStreet in Rugby, and there appears to bevery little that can be done about it.

According to a resident who lives right op-posite the park, Tony Vos, the criminalshave the temerity to even go as far as diggingup the cables in broad daylight.

An arrest have been made recently, butVos says this did not deter the other crimi-nals who have dug trenches since.

“It’s been going on for a year now,” saysVos.

“They dig the cables up and then removethe copper in the cable.”

According to him the lights in the park ha-

ven’t worked for months.“There are thorns in the park, no lights

and a deep hole near the children’s play ar-ea.”

A manhole, according to him, became un-covered a few weeks ago while the grass wasbeing cut, but the cover has never been re-placed.

“I have phoned the City of Cape Town be-fore, but they haven’t done anything aboutit.”

When asked if he had a reference number,he said none was given to him.

Ward councillor Bernadette le Roux saysthat the council does indeed have knowledgeof the situation.

“A joint operation between us, police andlaw enforcement to address issues such asthese and vagrants are being planned. There

is a criminal element in the area which mustbe addressed as soon as possible,” she ad-mits.

Le Roux also pointed out that it was theauthority’s copper cable theft unit that ar-rested the theft suspect recently.

“Authorities have been working closelywith the Paarden Island City ImprovementDistrict and have used their video footage tomake the recent arrest,” she concludes.

The park isn’t fenced off and there are cur-rently questions surrounding which depart-ment or company is in charge of what sec-tion.

According to Vos, Metrorail and the Cityof Cape Town owns parts of the park, and itis difficult to complain about anything, be-cause “everyone refers him to someoneelse”.

The heat wave has been almost enoughto make one believe in global warming.

Then, just when you think the“greenies” are right, you turn on theTV and see the biggest freeze in Europefor decades.

From this you will gather that I havemy doubts about climate scientists. Ialso have problems with weather pre-dictions, served up on all the electronicmedia.

This business of a 30 or 60 percentchance of rain is weird. Why do we nev-er have a 50 percent or an 80 percentchance of rain?

Weather forecasters have an abun-dance of information from satellitesbut they still get it wrong.

One suspects that the whole job isturned over to computers which tell usthat the temperature in Paarl will peakat precisely 37 degrees C.

Wonderful, but how can they knowthe precise temperature at any givenlocation and still be so vague about thereally important things like rain?

Theheatwavealso tells us importantthings about the way we live.

In these informal times most of ushave shed a layer of undergarments

and things like jackets with collars andties are on the way out.

Now we wear baseball caps and walkaround in a state of semi-undress atweekends.

Any Arab from one ofthe desert tribes wouldtell us that we are madand the only way to copewith real heat is to coverup and keep it out.

Our complete failureto understand that canbe seen in the way webuild houses.

All those big windowsand, worst of all, blackroofs!

Solar water heatershave taught us just howeffective the colourblack is at absorbing theradiation from the sun.

A one-square metre black panel canprovide hot water for a family so youcan imagine how much heat is ab-sorbed by a whole roof.

We try to deal with the problem byinstalling layers of insulation abovethe ceiling but all this does is trap theheat in the roof space where it buildsup, drying out the timber and causing

maximum expansion and contraction.A black cover over a confined and

well insulated space is the way to makea solar oven!

All roofs should be painted white be-cause white reflects bothlight and heat, making itmuch easier to deal withthe heat that does man-age to penetrate – as anydesert Arab will tell you.

Just imagine howmuch less electrity wouldbe used by reducing thedemand for air condition-ing.

We would all becomenicer people if we lived incooler homes.

Productivity would in-crease.

We would all become, cooler, wiser, saner and more produc-tive.

All the “greenies” have to do is banblack, red, grey and green roofs in hotcountries and they will change theworld.

All roofs should be white, preferablyceramic white, so that they becomeheat shields to keep out the solar radia-tion.

White must be the new green

The Bard lives on: Elkanah House High School camealive with graceful Shakespearian scenes performed by theGrade 11 dramatic arts students at their annual ‘Shakesperience’ recently. As in previous years, this evening is partof an integrated task. Performances take place in the various corners and annexes of the Elkanah House theatre andstudents create specific décor to suit their Shakespeareanpieces. Audiences could watch short excerpts of plays bythe students, rotating between the different scenes. Ascast, students are also responsible for arranging thelighting, dressing their set, costumes, music and for arranging their own rehearsal process. Each group had to produce marketing materials to represent their own inserts. Pictured here are Kelly Paulsen (left) as Celia, and Gabi vanNiekerk as Rosalind in their piece from As you like it.

The traffic situation around schools of-ten leads to much frustration for drivers, especially when inconsiderate parentschoose to break the law.

It is for this reason that City of Cape Towntraffic officers conducted a scholar transportblitz last week in an effort to ensure thatlearners arrive at school safely.

Special emphasis was placed on scholartransport vehicles which transport learnersto schools and creches across the city, duringthe operation last week Thursday.

Officers also concentrated on parents who, while dropping their children off at theschools, cause major traffic congestionthrough their general disregard for trafficlaws.

During the operation in Table View a totalof 62 offences were recorded.

Six motorists were arrested for not havingthe necessary permits and their vehicleswere impounded – one driver was only 19years old, had no professional driving per-mit, no valid driving licence and was operat-

ing an unlicensed vehicle on a public road. One suspect was arrested for driving with

a false licence token and number plates, while another was arrested on six warrantsof arrest valued at R5 000.

A group of cyclists completed the ArgusCycle Tour this year as part of an aware-ness campaign around autoimmune dis-eases.

The Join the Fight Against AutoimmuneDiseases team supporting Abbott Laborato-ries braved it out to complete this challeng-ing race over 110km in 43°C heat.

The team consisted of some of the key pre-scribing doctors, their practice staff, Abbottstaff and one patient suffering from psoriaticarthritis.

Nicholas Sessions from the southern sub-urbs has been living with psoriatic arthritisfor more than 15 years. A new cycling enthu-siast, Sessions has completed the Argustwice before.

He was in the first batch to leave the start-ing line at 06:42 as he could not be out in thesun too long because of his condition.

Sessions completed the race in about threeand a half hours, an amazing time for thisinspiring athlete.

“This year was quite different. We are ex-pecting our third child and I didn’t trainnearly as much as I did for last year’s racewhich I completed in three hours and nineminutes,” Sessions said.

He is adamant that exercise is the key togood health.

“Exercise is so imperative to life – not onlyto keep fit but also the balance it gives your

life.”An engineer by day, Sessions runs his own

company with his brothers. He is marriedwith two toddlers, with another due in Sep-tember.

He is thankful for the change Humira – atumour necrosis factor (TNF) blocker medi-cine that can lower the ability of a person’simmune system to fight infections – hasbrought to his life.

“At one stage I was drinking handfuls ofpills each day. I couldn’t wind down my carwindow and didn’t think I would be able toclimb Lions Head. Now I inject myself twicea month and I can get on with my life,” hesaid.

The specialist doctors who formed part ofthe team were impressive in their times. Asmany of them are keen athletes in their ownright, it was not surprising.

Nurse Joyce Doggart from Eversdal wasalso part of the cycling team and completedher first Argus this year.

The idea for the Abbott team to competewas that of Ansie Vorster from Bellville. Asales representative for Abbott, Vorster hasbeen experiencing symptoms of an autoim-mune disease over the past few months. Shehas however not been officially diagnosedyet.

Although she struggled with hip and backproblems she also managed to complete thechallenging race.

LEON STEENKAMP

Keeping the environment around us lit-ter-free is the responsibility of everyone, yet few people demonstrate this moreclearly than Blanché de Kock.

De Kock was so disgusted with the filthystate of the beach when she and husbandChan went for a walk on their first morningin their new hometown that she immediate-ly decided to do something to remedy the sit-uation.

“I got together with the then reverend ofthe Dutch Reformed Church, Stephan vanHeerden. He was working with the home-less people in Melkbosstrand at the time. To-gether we decided to use these people tostart a cleaning project,” de Kock explains.

The initial group included some 40 clean-ers, men and women, but later petered outto 10.

These days the group consists only ofwomen.

De Kock collects the women from theirhomes in Olive Close every Thursday andthen drops them at different locations inMelkbosstrand, which includes the beachand the busiest roads.

The project is a mutually beneficial one.The women are paid a small allowance, of-ten the only money they have for the week, whilst residents and visitors to Melk-bosstrand enjoy the advantage of a cleanertown.

In the past the National Lottery, the At-lantic Beach Golf Club and local estateagents Rawson have given donations to helppay the cleaners. Currently an anonymoussupporter is funding the project, whilstmembers of De Kock’s bible study grouptake turns to prepare meals for the group oncleaning day.

It is however an ongoing struggle.“It is clean for two days and then the litter

is back, but at least it is not as bad as I haveseen it in the past,” she says.

Her husband has also been roped intohelping with this project.

“My dear husband took over when I wasout of action for a couple of weeks followingmy back operation,” she says looking at himwith a smile.

“Yes, but I was a bit stricter with themthan you are,” he says with a twinkle in hiseye.

“They are like my children and I guessthey probably twist me around their littlefinger,” she confesses.

De Kock has been the passionate drivingforce behind this project for the last 12years.

In 1993 she received the first – and thusfar only – Honoris honorary certificate fromProbus (a club for retired professionals andbusinesspeople) in recognition of this serv-ice to the community.

During last week’s monthly meeting ofthe Blaauwberg Subcouncil de Kock re-ceived a certificate of appreciation.

“Mrs De Kock is one of many people whoact in the backwaters of life doing the rightthing, not because they stand to gain in cash

or kind, but because what they are doing isright and proper,” said subcouncil chairper-son Heather Brenner in her tribute.

“This award should go to my cleaners whohelp me,” De Kock said.

Plans are under way to have the City of Cape

Town take over the project which will seemore jobs being created.

“I will miss it a lot. Thursdays have becomean institution. My whole week is scheduledaround Thursday,” De Kock said of the city’splans.

This enthusiastic nature lover will howev-er still be doing her part and continue beinga shining example of civic responsibility.

“Every time I go for a walk I take along aplastic bag and pick up whatever rubbish Isee along the way.”

The courage of a young cancer suffereris what kept a local extreme swimmer fo-cused to complete a challenging to andfrom swim from Bloubergstrand to Rob-ben Island.

“It was the thought of Natalie and thecourage that she and her family have shownover the last year that kept me going,” saysToni Enderli, an estate agent from TableView on completing the 15km Swim of Cour-age on Human Rights Day (21 March).

The swim was in aid of Natalie Cohen (11)who was diagnosed with a very rare formof bone cancer in January last year. She re-quires regular treatments in the USA andthe medical expenses are exorbitant.

Enderli started planning the event threemonths ago, but weather conditions keptpreventing him from hitting the water.

Although the conditions last Wednesdaywere not optimal, Enderli made the decisionthat this would be the day.

“Becauseof themental rollercoaster of thelast three weeks I decided to continue withthe swim although the water temperature of12,7°C was colder than the recommendedrange of between 14°C and 16°C for a doubleswim. The first week I got fogged out and thesecond week the wind picked up,” Enderliexplained.

It was by no means an easy swim.“I told them to not tell me what the water

temperature was but to check if my strokesstart to slow down. If after asking me a cou-ple of questions, I seemed to be in troublethey should pull me out. That was my strate-gy,” said Enderli who raised funds for un-derprivileged children living in Du Noonduring his last charity swim – the Speedo IceSwim in July last year.

Enderli recalls entering a current sometwo kilometres before Robben Island whichkept him static for about 15 minutes.

“The visibility was excellent and I couldsee the rocks and starfish on thebottom, thatis how I realised I wasn’t moving. It’s likehitting a wall but it gave me time to reflect... that helped get through the mental block.”

He says the fact that it was Human RightsDay made it all the more appropriate.

“Cancer affects so many people and we alldeserve a quality life. This swim is helpingNatalie’s family pay her medical bills but al-so raising awareness of cancer in children.”

Starting out at 08:45 Enderli completed theswim in five hours and four minutes. Heachieved his personal best time of two hoursand 21 minutes on the outward route.

Research has shown that those who van-dalise municipal property are youths be-tween 14 and 20 and everybody’s help isneeded to root out this problem.

Alderman James Vos, chairman of Sub-council 3 said on Thursday 22 March that re-pair and replacement of the signs is extreme-ly costly.

“I recently undertook an inspection of allthe road signs and other important signageapplicable to pedestrian safety and wasshocked at the defacement,” Vos said.

This followed a number of incidents re-ported to his office during the course of themonth.

“This degrades the environment, createstheperception thatmatters are out of controland as a result the values of homes and busi-nesses deteriorate.”

He called on parents, teachers, youth lead-ers and the youth to assist the city in thisregard.

He said he was convinced that this wasnothing other than vandalism.

“Council cannot solve this social problemin isolation,” he said.

He said damaging municipal property isa serious criminal offence and that matterswere worsened by people stealing the signsfor scrap metal. Vos urged people to phonethe police or Metro Police with information.

Report missing or damaged road signageto the city’s call centre on 0860 10 30 54.

Metro Policedeserve creditThis newspaper receives “spin” stories ona daily basis, always positive news aboutthis and that company’s success, blah blahblah. To put a positive spin on every eventis what a PR company is paid to do.

They also get kudos if the press releaseis printed as is, without the journalist ask-ing pertinent questions or double check-ing the statistics.

Sadly, we live in a world where deskjockeys have taken over the media land-scape. It’s so much easier to simply “copyand paste” than to go out there and get thereal story. Part of our job is to sift throughthese “spin” stories, separate the wheatfrom the chaff.

The Metro Police are excellent in send-ing out press releases of recent successes. The one that landed in Monday’s inboxwas about them having arrested 34 peopleover the weekend for a myriad of offences, including drug possession and drunk driv-ing.

They’re doing their job, that’s for sure. And then they get flak from the public.Flak for making them late, for inconven-iencing them. The same people enjoy liv-ing in relative peace, hoping the police areout there doing their job.

It’s time to make a mindshift and givethe Metro Police the credit they deserve. So next time you get stopped at a road-block, adjust your attitude while you wait.

Winter will make it worseWith winter fast approaching and nights be-coming longer I would like to refer the pow-ers that be to the following (this refers toBlaauwberg Road, Table View).

With the street lighting being removed forroughly 1 500m either side of the road, willpedestrians have clear access as follows:

1. With large cavities and holes excavatedon both sides with very little danger warn-ings or barricades for protection. Also verylittle clear access for bus and taxi commuterstravelling to and from work.

2. With underfoot conditions being veryuncomfortable for the elderly, infirm, wheel-chair-bound people and mothers with pramswhich will be made more difficult with mud

and slush a further problem.3. Why were both sides of the road dug up

and lights removed and then left untouchedfor two or three months when it would havebeen more cost effective and far less incon-venience to all concerned if one side of theroadwasworkedon in the shortest time fromstart to finish.

I wonder why our councillor, HeatherBrenner, has not observed these problemsand reported them to the City Engineer andthe City Council. I also wonder who will beresponsible for any injuries or caused by theshoddy workmanship of Martin and East.

PETER SWANEPOELTable View

I think thiscity dreamsfor you ...You recently ran two articles in the TableView edition – one regarding trolley guysand one about the MyCiTi roadworks.

With regard to the MyCiTi links youhad comments from people praising theroadworks/buses. Maybe you shouldhave spoken to some of the residents wholive along the route. Instead of having busand fast traffic lanes 50 or so yards awayfrom their properties with trees andshrubs to buffer the sound, now they havetraffic lanes (and cycle lanes) butted rightup against their back walls with all theshrubs removed. This means instead ofgreenery you now get some goon gawkingonto your property along with high noiselevels and greater vulnerability. This haswiped thousands of rands off the value ofproperties, but the city doesn’t give adamn! How about compensating the resi-dents along the route?

Residents have been putting up with theroads being dug up for the past threeyears. Had the city opened the N7/Sand-own Road link before digging up and re-stricting every other road in the area theproblems being encountered now wouldbe much less.

Public transport will not reduce thetraffic to nothing as dreamed by the city. The links only go to the Civic Centre – noteveryone works at the Civic Centre. A stu-dent going to UCT from Table View for ex-ample cannot get to the campus before lec-tures even if they take the first bus. Theservice is deeply flawed.

On the subject of the trolley guys, thewriter obviously didn’t live in the area.Nor did he go to the so-called green areaswhere these guys camp out. If he had hewould have seen all the rubbish that hasbeen taken from the bins and spreadacross the area, not to mention the humanexcrement and damage that is done bythese guys turning the area into a dump.

How can you expect residents to be sym-pathetic to these people when they justempty your bin, throw all the rubbisharound the streets and walkways and turnthe public areas into toilets.

(The article about the trolley pusherswas aimed at giving readers an descriptive, yet neutral glimpse into the lives of thesepeople. What feelings the articlemight haveevoked from each reader would differ de-pending on your personal view point - Ed)

Left lane irritationI’ve seen a lot of reports regarding traffic inthe Table View area and thought I wouldshare this with you.

Every morning, at the intersection ofBlaauwberg and the R27 (at the BaysideMall) there seems to be a problem.

There is lots of congestion and most of thetraffic is heading towards Cape Town CBD.

There are two lanes turning left onto theR27, from Blaauwberg Road and a lot of mo-torists are using the two straight lanes, toturn left on the R27.

As in the photograph (below), on thismorning (22 March), it happened to be tominibus taxis but they are not the only onesthat do it. It does cause quite a lot of aggrava-tion of drivers that are rightfully in the twoleft turn only lanes and causes even morebacklog further down Blaauwberg Road.

I have sent this email and pics to MerleLourens, (Cape Town Traffic Department),traffic officers in the area and at the intersec-tions. I know that the resources of the trafficdepartment is limited, but we’d love to seethem in the area more often.

Trevor IsaacsTable View

The City of Cape Town’s Maxine Jor-daan responds:

As a result of the events described, City ofCape Town traffic officers are conducting pa-trols and monitoring all intersections alongthe Blaauwberg corridor.

Traffic officers have been requested to spe-cifically monitor this complaint on an ad hocbasis and take action where necessary. Overthe past year 57 fines were issued at this specif-ic location alone.

A taxi pushes in over the solid white line inpeak morning traffic at the Blaauwberg andR27 intersection.

When learners at Vaatjie Moravian Pri-mary School thought of the police it con-jured up images of fear and trouble.

This was the conclusion reached by mem-bers of the Melkbosstrand police when theyrecently visited the rural school located onthe outskirts of town.

“We then decided to introduce them to themembers of the local police station,” saidConstable Juan du Plessis, sector command-er for the rural area.

The members of the different shifts of thestation all had an opportunity to visit theschool to interactwith the 193 learn-ers.

“The school is lo-cated on the borderof Melkbosstrand,Atlantis and Phila-delphia and is oftenoverlooked. Sincethe beginning of Feb-ruary we had a shiftvisiting the schoolevery week,” DuPlessis explained.

Talks includedwarnings about

drugs, sexual offences and road safety.Last Friday on the last day of the term Du

Plessis and his shift members visited theschool.

This message concerned safety during theholidays.

They also handed out rulers with the po-lice logo and treated the children to sweets.

Simba the Lion was also scheduled tomake an appearance at the school but prob-lems with the truck prevented the friendlyfeline from entertaining the children.

The project was part of the Safe SchoolsProject an initiativeby the educationdepart-ment to promote safety at schools in high-risk crime areas.

All of us often have the predicament: DoI give this homeless, begging person mon-ey or do I simply drive off with a guiltyconscience?

Adding to this dilemma, organisations andcity officials discourage people from givinghomeless people money orfood or to leave food parcelson their rubbish bins. Thereason behind this, is thatthese “good deeds” do nothelp street people to bettertheir lives. It also worsensthe vagrancy problem that isprevalent everywhere.

Thanks to a food voucheridea of Marc Anthony Zim-mermann, head of the Broc-coli Project, the help of Pickn Pay and the support of theCity of Cape Town, it mayjust be easier to give to thehomeless directly withoutfeeling guilty.

According to BronwenRohland, Pick n Pay’s di-rector of marketing, Pick nPay customers can purchase food vouchersto give to those in need. “Unlike cash dona-tions, food vouchers can only be redeemedfor food and therefore cannot be used to ob-tain cigarettes, alcohol or narcotics such asglue or thinners,” he said.

The voucher project is an incentive for do-nors to give responsibly and recipients topurchase responsibly, Zimmermann said.

The project was officially launched in Sep-tember 2010, but only included a few storesin the Western Cape. It is spreading its wingsslowly but surely and will ultimately coverthe whole country.

The vouchers cost R20 per pack of four R5

vouchers and can be redeemed against pur-chases of food and other approved basicproducts at any Pick n Pay outlet country-wide. Vouchers can be bought at the custom-er care desk – not the cashiers – of Pick nPay in Canal Walk, Bellville, Tygervalley,Table View and Brackenfell.

If vouchers are not available in the store, management should inform The Broccoli

Project who will thenprovide the store withmore.

At some stores thereare still R50 bookletswith R10 vouchers avail-able. This can still be re-deemed as well or can beexchanged with two R5vouchers at the store,Carol Dale Kuys, finan-cial manager of the Broc-coli Project, says.

The expiry date on thevouchers is not applica-ble, she says. “We had toput an expiry date on thevouchers for legal rea-sons, but they do not ‘ex-pire’ as Broccoli Project

will always honour thevouchers. We communicated this to all of thePick n Pay stores,” she says.

“Please be aware that our current stocksof the vouchers are running low, so if thereis a significant increase in demand for themwe may run out in the short term, but thenext batch should be available by end April.”

She invited the public to contact her withany feedback to ensure that all hiccups areironed out to the benefit of all. For more in-formation email [email protected], or contact Marc Anthony on082 334 3113 or Carol on 074 492 6710 or visitwww.broccoliproject.org.

The Snap Centre for autistic children inVierlanden, Durbanville, is hosting aprestigious gala dinner and charity auc-tion on Thursday 12 April at 18:00 at theOrange Hotel in Cape Town.

This black tie event is presented to raiseawareness and funds to sponsor more chil-dren in their programme.

The occurrence of this development dis-order has increased by 500 percent over thepast five years and currently one out of eve-ry 110 children in South Africa is affectedby this neurological disorder, according toSnap spokesperson, Esmé Brink.

“Early intervention is essential. Re-search has shown that early interventioncan result in as many as 48 percent of diag-nosed children being mainstreamed intoregular schools, which has a great socio-economic impact.

“It has been calculated that it costs a fami-ly approximately R3 million to raise a childon the autism spectrum in their lifetime, astreatments are specialised and very expen-sive.

“However, if early intervention is re-ceived the cost comes down to R1 million.

“With the escalation of autism in thiscountry, we could face a dire economic cri-sis if these children do not receive assist-ance and specialised intervention,” Brinksaid.

“If you consider the numbers of childrencurrently going untreated, this could poten-tially have a disastrous spill-over effect onthe country’s labour force both in terms ofadults not capable of functioning within theworkplace or families that have to carry thehuge financial burden to accommodatethese children.

“The far-reaching implications of thisdisorder can be an enormous drain onSouth African human resources unless thepublic and private sectors join hands tofight this situation,” said Brink.

The gala dinner is presented in April asit is the month the world turns its attentionto the far-reaching effects of autism by cele-brating World Autism Month.

TV presenter Michael Mol will be themaster of ceremonies at the gala dinner.

The highly acclaimed instrumental popgroup Sterling EQ will entertain guestswith their virtuoso performance during thedinner.

Tickets cost R2 000 per person. Ticketscan booked with Ina on 083 463 4090 or [email protected].

Elkanah House High School is preparingfor its bi-annual musical production, thisyear featuring the 1960s classic Hair-spray.

“This is our third full-scale musical pro-duction, and the children and staff havebeen putting their all into making this some-thing special,” said Julie Dickson, the direc-tor of the play and drama teacher.

Previous musical productions by ElkanahHouse include Joseph and the Amazing Tech-nicolor Dreamcoat in 2008 and Fiddler on theRoof in 2010.

The musical, which was originally madein the 1960s, deals with being different andstill being able to shine.

“I think Tracy (the lead character in theplay) shows that you really can’t judge abook by its cover. She continues to be ambi-tious and loud despite the fact that societywants her to be quiet. She is a great role mod-el for anybody who has ever felt excluded be-cause of how they look or how they act,” saidKelly Naude, who along with Kaitlyn Ester-huizen is playing the role of Tracy.

“The decision to go with two girls switch-ing the lead role on consecutive nights wasnot one made lightly. I know that both ofthese girls deserved the role, and they bothplayed it to perfection,” said Dickson.

The play will run from Thursday 17 Mayuntil Saturday 26 May, and tickets are avail-able through Computicket at www.com-puticket.com. For more information contactElkanah House High School on 021 554 8600.

MARITA MEYER

“An osteo what?” – The an-swer nine of my 10 friendsgave me when I told them Iwas seeing an osteopath for amuscle injury. They’re notalone – most South Africansfall into this category.

Fact is osteopathy, a “hands-on” manual therapy, has beenaround since the 1870s (beforechiropractic and physiothera-py), but in South Africa it’s stillrelatively unknown.

According to Dr Guy Ash-burner, there are only 50 regis-tered osteopaths in South Africacompared with more than 5 000in the United Kingdom.

Guy runs an osteopathic clin-ic in Constantia and patientscome from all over the Peninsu-la to get treatment for a widerange of problems which in-clude back pain, disc injuries, pain in the neck, sciatica, trapped nerves, headaches, jointand muscle pain, symptoms ofarthritis, sport related injuries, fibromyalgia, pain during preg-nancy, infantile colic, irritablebabies as well as latching andsuckling difficulties.

According to Guy, osteopathyis not the same as chiropractic

or physiotherapy. “Osteopathstake into account not only physi-cal symptoms, but also the pa-tient’s lifestyle and attitudes, aswell as his or her overall health, effectively treating the patientas a whole. The osteopath con-siders physical, environmentaland stress factors simultaneous-ly, whereas the general medicalpractitioner would usually treatthese factors individually and inisolation from each other.”

Osteopaths, chiropractorsand physiotherapists treat thesame conditions with differentapproaches.

“If you’re thinking you mayneed to see a chiropractor orphysiotherapist, then seeing anosteopath is suitable. Many ofour patients have seen manytherapists and prefer our holis-tic osteopathic approach.”

While chiropractors tend to bevery focused on a range of tech-niques for manipulation of thespine, osteopaths do not manip-ulate (click) a joint the way chi-ropractors do.

“We make use of a wider rangeof techniques for the wholebody. Apart from manipulation, osteopaths use other techniquessuch as stretches, massage andgentle release techniques (crani-al osteopathy) without any‘clicking’ of the joints.”

Guy believes this “hands-on”therapy can help restore the nor-malmobility of themusculoskel-etal system which in turn im-proves the function of the nerv-ous, circulatory and immunesystems and allows faster heal-ing, reducing pain, congestionand restriction within the body.

“By paying attention to thesignificance of any alteration instructure or function (the joints, muscles, ligaments, bones andconnective tissue), an osteopathis able to interpret whole pat-terns of aches, pains and generalhealth problems.”

If you suffer from headaches, for example, it could be the finalsymptom of lower-back or foot-related problems.

“If you have a knee injury, anosteopath will also assesswhether there may be any in-volvement of other areas with amechanical relationship to theknee, such as the foot, hip, lowerback and pelvis, and the associ-ated soft tissues,” explains Guy.

It’s all about treating the un-derlying causes.

Guy studied at the BritishSchool of Osteopathy in theUnited Kingdom and also has apost-graduate diploma in paedi-atric osteopathy. He emigratedto South Africa in 2006, after

which he opened his clinic Oste-opathy Cape Town.

He is passionate about correctposture: “Good posture is thecornerstone of good health,”says Guy.

“It’s so basic – if it’s moving,it’s working. A lack of mobilityto a greater of lesser degree willcontribute to many medical con-ditions. The more movement, the better your body works, that’s nature. It’s all about keep-ing it simple.”

The first consultation with anosteopath will include a detailedcase history leading to a pa-tient’s present symptoms. Aphysical examination is thenconducted to evaluate the body’sbiomechanics (structure, pos-ture and physical movements).

“Subsequent manual therapywill range from very subtle tech-niques used for babies, throughto more robust methods for ath-letes. Some of these include gen-tle releasing, joint articulationand manipulation, musclestretching, rhythmic jointmovements, soft tissue massage, trigger point therapy and lym-phatic drainage,” explains Guy.

The number of visits canrange from two to six consulta-tions of 45 to 60 minutes. Visitthe website www.osteogood-health.com or call 021 715 9999.

Do you enjoy pickled fish but alwaysthought it too much trouble to make? Then be sure to try this flop-freeGood Food Diet recipe for mildlyspiced Moroccan Pickled Fish withintense orange and tomato flavours. It’s healthy too!

Hake is a rich source of protein andit is also low in fat – the perfect foodto form part of a healthy diet. Justopen a pack of frozen hake, a tin oftomato puree and a container of or-ange juice … and add the rest of theingredients from your grocery cup-board. Best of all, you can keep thepickled fish in the fridge for severaldays. Usually vinegar is used in pick-led fish, but in this Moroccan recipethe acid required to preserve the fishcomes from the orange juice and thetomato puree.

This recipe is heart-friendly,wheat-free, gluten-free, dairy-freeand egg-free.

1 x 450g packfrozen hake me-dallions or 1 x500 g pack fro-zen hake steaks

15ml (1 tbsp)olive or sun-flower oil

1 large onion,sliced

1 mediumyellow, red ororange pepper,coarselychopped

10ml (2 tsp) freshly crushed garlic7,5ml – 10ml (1½ tsp – 2 tsp) medi-

um curry powder5ml (1 tsp) ground cumin (jeera)125ml (½ cup) raisins1 x 410g can tomato puree125ml (½ cup) water375ml (1½ cups) pure orange juice

(use 100% pure fruit juice, no sugaradded)

10ml (2 tsp) white sugarsalt and milled black pepper to

tastefresh coriander (dhania) to gar-

nishlemon or lime wedges to servetoasted slivered almonds to gar-

nishPoach the frozen fish. Drain and

cool. Break into large chunks and re-move any small bones. Set aside.

Heat the oil in a pot. Sauté onionand pepper. Remove from the heat.Stir in garlic, curry powder, cuminand raisins. Stir for a few seconds.Add tomato puree, water, orangejuice and sugar. Return to heat.Bring to the boil, reduce the heat andsimmer uncovered for 6 to 7 minutes.Remove from heat. Gently stir in thecooked fish. Season with salt andblack pepper. Allow to cool complete-ly. Transfer to a non-metal container(a 2F plastic ice-cream containerworks very well). Cover and storeovernight in the fridge for the fla-vours to develop.

Serve cold or at room temperaturewith lemon or lime wedges. Garnishwith fresh coriander (dhania) and, ifpreferred, sprinkle with toasted al-mond slivers (see tip below). If youarenot allergic or intolerant towheator gluten, you can serve it with cous-cous or wholewheat or rye bread.

The fish will keep in the fridge for3 days. Serves 5.Tip: To toast slivered almonds,

place almonds in a dry pot or fryingpan and heat over medium heat, stir-ring often. Remove almonds from potor pan as soon as they start to turngolden brown.

Durbanville resident, MrJacques de Klerk, has lovinglycreated a little masterpiece.

De Klerk is a regular visitor at the

Rust-en-Vrede Gallery. During oneof his frequent visits he decided tomake a scale model of the Otto Bachbaby grand piano in the gallery.

This mammoth task started inSeptember 2011 and af-ter spending 1 256hours on this project, itis finally completed. No detail was over-looked, from the littlewheels that turn rightdown to the movingfoot pedals. The pianoalso has a speaker atthe bottom throughwhich piano music canbe played. According toDe Klerk, this projectwould not have beenpossible without thesupport and encour-agement of his twosons, Jaco and Riaan aswell as the detailedphotography of hisfriend Errol.

The Vienna State Op-era house has ex-pressed some interestin acquiring the pianoas a mascot.

Anybody interestedin thepiano cancontactDe Klerk on 076 8464757.

The cloudy blanket stretched over TableMountain early afternoon was a clearsign that the south-easter would be mak-ing an appearance for the final event ofthe Laguna Mall kiteboarding series onWednesday.

Dean Galant took third place. In the women’s category it was Iva Lopez

followed by Mareike Brase from Germanyand previous winner Caroline Hoessack.
