. From page 1.“It is not a question of whether the city will

contribute but how much,” Clayton said.In anticipation of the approval being given

this month PVJ has already gone to tenderfor the project with the tender process clos-ing on Friday 15 June.

“The consulting engineers are busy withthe adjudication of the tenders. I expect thatwe will be in a position to award the tender

in the next few days – except that the awardwill not take place in the absence of an ac-ceptable approval,” marketing director ofthe Aska Property Group, Tony Clarke saidlast week.

Clark confirmed that should the develop-ers not receive the approval within the nextfew days the opening of the road will onceagain be delayed despite the city’s projectionin March this year of the project getting un-

der way in June.Herron however confirmed that the June/

July deadline will be met.“I have been informed that construction of

the Sandown link providing direct access tothe N7 will be complete and open to trafficby December 2013 thus bringing considera-ble relief to the traffic situation in the area,”Herron said. Clayton said if all goes to plancontractors should be on site by 12 July.

WesternCape liquor traderswhodefy new regulations may losetheir licences and those whocommit the most serious contra-ventions could be fined up toR1 million.

This and other issues weretouched upon when the WesternCape Liquor Authority and West-ern Cape MEC of finance, economicdevelopment and tourism, AlanWinde, hosted an information ses-sion on the Western Cape LiquorAct for Du Noon liquor licence hold-

ers this week. The session, which was attended

by liquor licence holders from DuNoon, was held on Monday at Mil-nerton Police Station.

Winde said in April that the actis the single largest intervention toreduce alcohol abuse and its relatedharm in the province.

It was revealed that businesseswould have until next April, as partof a transition period, to fully com-ply with the act and that at the endof this year, one wouldn’t get a liq-uor licence renewal form.

People applying for new liquor li-cences could now also contact the

liquor authority instead of magis-trate’s courts, as was previously re-quired.

They would be required to showa zoning certificate or proof of ap-plication for zoning.

Traders were warned to checkwith theirmunicipality aboutwhenthey could operate, as dictated byzoning regulations and by-laws.

Says Winde’s spokesperson,Phumzile Van Damme: “The West-ern Cape Liquor Authority’s Advo-cacy and Stakeholder RelationsUnit regularly conducts awarenesssessions in communities, with com-munity police forums, ward coun-

cillors and the police. During thesesessions, the Liquor Authority in-forms attendees on matters relatingto liquor regulation and addressesany concerns that may arise.”

Van Damme said some 15 to 20 li-cence holders of the 22 operating inDu Noon attended the interactivesession.

Winde clarified the importance ofthe actwhen it came into effect: “Weaim to reduce the number of drin-king spots in residential areas. Wewill alsobe crackingdownondistri-butors and retailers who supply theestimated 25 000 illegal shebeenscurrently operating in our residen-

tial communities. Under the act, they will be liable for penalties thatinclude very heavy fines, jail termsand the seizure of assets. We willnot stand idly by as alcohol conti-nues to destroy our communities;we are taking them back from theclutches of alcohol abuse.”

Under the new act, individualscould face up to five years in jail, ora R1 million fine, for the most seri-ous contraventions, including tra-ding without a licence and sellingalcohol to children.

Winde’s department will be hos-ting 100 of these sessions in this fi-nancial year.

Authorities are urging motorists to take carewhen travelling along the poorly lit Blaauw-berg Road after two pedestrians were recent-ly knocked down.

Many of the street lights along the busyroad are currently not working due to theconstruction work under way on the MyCiTibus lanes.

Er24 reported an incident on Friday morn-ing where an 18-year-old trolley pusher washit by a car as he was walking along Blaauw-berg Road at about 04:00.

Neither the trolley pusher nor the driverof the VW Golf saw each other and it appearsneither parties took evasive action to pre-vent the accident.

“The car crashed into the man and his trol-ley causing the trolley to be ripped into piec-es and the young man sustained a possiblebroken leg and hip,” said Vanessa Jacksonfrom ER24.

When paramedics from Milnerton arrivedon the scene they stabilised the patient, gavehim something for the pain and transportedhim to Groote Schuur Hospital.

The driver of the Golf sustained no inju-ries.

On Monday 28 May at 20:00 an unidentifiedman died on the scene after being knockeddown by a taxi whilst crossing BlaauwbergRoad at Boy de Goede Circle.

Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral commit-tee member for transport, roads and storm-water said it was necessary to remove the ex-isting street lighting during the excavationsin order to widen Blaauwberg Road to ac-commodate the building of the red MyCiTibus lanes down the centre of the road.

“The new lighting can only be installedwhen widening is complete as access to prop-erties takes place in the space where the newlighting will be located,” Herron said.

He added that during the planning phasepriority was given to provide ongoing access

to properties along the road.“Reinstatement of the lighting will com-

mence when each widening section is com-plete and will therefore differ for differentsections.

“For example, the section between Donkinand Wood roads east-bound has now beencompleted and installing of lighting willstart shortly. It should however be noted thatfinal switching on is dependent on Eskomwho does the final connection.

“We are liaising with them to get authorityfor the electrical contractor to do this,” Her-ron added.

The police’s appeal to pedestrians to wearlight or brightly coloured clothes at night tobe visible to motorists was echoed by Her-ron.

“Pedestrians in the area are advised to becautious when crossing the road particular-ly because visibility is reduced while streetlighting is not possible, due to roadworks,”he said.

The athletics track at the Bellville Velodromewill not be excluded from the development cur-rently under way, but the option to re-locate thetrack in future is a possibility.

This option is being investigated so as to ade-quately respond to the city’s desire for a newCBD node in Bellville.

Hein Ehlers, managing director of the Velo-drome developers, Devmark, said this week anathletics track in the centre of aplannedcentralbusiness hub will be out of context, which iswhy provision to exclude the track from the Ve-lodrome is made only for the distant future.

Uncertainty whether or not the athleticstrack will survive the development of the Bel-lville Velodrome has prompted a local council-lor to submit a motion to halt the project.

The motion was submitted by Andrea Crous, councillor of Ward 70, at a subcouncil meetinglast week.

An application for the rezoning of the Velo-drome was approved by the De Grendel Sub-

council in May last year.At the time, it was stipulated in the

Broader Tyger Valley Urban Design Frame-work and Guidelines that the existing ath-letics track at the Velodrome continue tofunction as an outdoor recreational space. It was suggested its existing size be reducedand converted into a series of terraced pub-lic open spaces that link Carl Cronjé Roadand Willie van Schoor Avenue.

When the same application was broughtbefore the subcouncil just more than a yearlater, the wording was changed to such anextent that the proposal indicated the exist-ing athletics track was to be converted intoa series of terraced public open spaces.

“We had meeting after meeting about thetimeframe of the development and whenthe sport clubs can start to move back, butmeanwhile they (city officials) are makingfools of us,” Crous said last week.

At the council meeting, Crous asked theprocess to be brought to a halt, until an-swers have been obtained as to what thetruth is.

She blames city of Cape Town officials,as they were responsible for tender condi-tions, the rezoning application and thecompilation of the broader Tyger Valleyframework.

“If the Bellville athletics track was to dis-appear, where would athletes practise?”she asked.

Crous is very concerned that this will re-

sult in the suburb losing many of its star ath-letes. “If parents who have children withSpringbok potential find their children with-out facilities, they will move away,” she says.Another concern for Crous is what was to be-comeof theannualMTBSathletics gathering,a highlight on the local schools’ athletics cal-endar, as well as other interschool athleticsmeetings.

“Why is it necessary to turn this area intoa new CBD? The Voortrekker Road CorridorImprovement District (VRCID) is the city’scentre and should be the CBD,” she says.

Gert Engelbrecht, chairperson of the track

and field events of Bellville Athletics Club, described the possibility of the athletics trackbeing stubbed as unacceptable.

“Bellville Velodrome is the cradle of athlet-ics. Many people move to the northern sub-urbs, specifically for the first-rate athleticstraining that is offered here,” he said.

Engelbrecht said the Bellville club boastedhighly qualified coaches of whom many yieldSpringbok athletes.

“If the athletics track were canned, exper-tise will be lost,” he said adding that the possi-ble omission of the athletics track would bea shame.

City clamps down on ‘nuisance offenders’

The penguins recuperating at Sanccobbird sanctuary were dressed in their fin-est tuxedos to welcome a very importantvisitor last week.

The British high commissioner to SouthAfrica, Dame Nicola Brewer visited Sanccobfor a behind-the-scenes tour of the facilities. She was accompanied by Lewis Pugh, envi-ronmental campaigner, endurance swim-mer and a passionate Sanccob ambassador.

Sanccob, a leading marine-orientated non-profit organisation, has treated more than90 000 oiled, ill, injured or abandoned Afri-can penguins and other threatened seabirdssince being established in 1968.

Under the guidance of acting CEO, Marga-ret Roestorf, Dame Brewer was given the op-portunity to meet UK volunteers working atthe centre, learn more about the MV Treas-ure and the Tristan da Cunha (part of theBritish overseas territory) oil spills of 2000and 2011 respectively, and get a bird’s eyeview of Sanccob’s seabird rehabilitation op-erations. She also got to meet some of thenewest hatchlings in the centre’s chick rear-ing unit and see the amount of care and nur-turing that goes into hand-rearing Africanpenguin chicks from incubation to fledgingyoung chicks.

Brewer also got to peek into the educationroom and to see a classroom in action as theGrade Rs from Elkanah House School weretransformed into penguins – one little chaprefused to take the costume off.

She also had the opportunity to step intothe shoes of a volunteer and feed some of theresident penguins and seabirds. Dressed inSanccob’s official oil-skin, boots and gloves, the resident penguin personalities werequick to warm-up to their esteemed visitorand get their share of pilchards for the morn-ing.

Brewer also adopted a penguin as part ofSanccob’s “Adopt a Penguin” programme

and christened him Tristan after Tristan daCunha Island.

She commended Sanccob and all the vol-unteers for the important conservation workthey are doing and encouraged the staff andvolunteers to keep actively supporting inter-national opportunities that bring peoplefrom different countries closer together.

Through Sanccob’s active volunteering

and internship programme, every year hun-dreds of volunteers from the UK dedicatetheir time and skills at the centre.

As a non-profit organisation, these volun-teers are vital to Sanccob’s day-to-day opera-tions and the rehabilitation of southern Afri-ca’s precious seabird populations.

Except for the Karoo dentist whowanted to pull out all my teeth, myencounters with the medical pro-fession have generally been posi-tive and successful, but I can’t saythe same about the legions of ac-countants and their assistantswho have realised that there is agood living to be made by takingcharge of the flow of money be-tween patients and doctors.

These entrepreneurs are gener-ally found running the privatehospitals, medical aid funds andhospital plans. Unfortunately, their first loyalty is to their share-holders and not the patients so themore things cost, the more moneyflows through their books and themore handsome their bonuses.

So in a world where the wholeeconomic system is based on thebelief that competition makes

things better and cheaper, wehave an area where competition iseffectively banned and the actuar-ies and accountants have restruc-tured the “industry” to makethings more expensive.

Having just spent four days ina general ward of a private hospi-tal at R2 600 a day plus the rest (theaccount was more than R30 000) Ifully expected to see the corridorspatrolled by accountants withclipboards looking for more itemsto put on the bill. But no, thatwould be a little too close to theblood and gore and the small riskthat the money men might startthinking about the patients in-stead of the shareholders. And wecan’t have that.

It all got me thinking that weneed a better way to measure theperformance of medical services.

One of the traditionalways is the doctor-pa-tient ratio. In an ad-vanced country likethe Unites Statesthere is roughly onedoctor for every 400patients while in apoor African countryone doctor has to lookafter thousands. InSouth Africa the ratiois one doctor per 1 300patients.

In the TV dramaHouse the ratioseems to be about five doctors toa patient though they do changepatients each week.

So a low ratio tells us that medi-cal services are readily availablebut if the ratio is too low the riskof passing patients around for sec-ond opinions or unnecessary op-

erations increases.Got to keep your col-leagues in business!

What would be a lotmore useful would bea ratio of the numberof accountants to thenumber of doctors. Tobe more precise thetotal number of non-medical staff in hos-pitals, medical aidfunds and hospitalplans compared to

the number of doctors who do thereal work.

We might even go as far as a piechart which shows how much ofevery rand spent on medical billsactually goes to medical workersand how much goes to the ac-countants, shareholders, salesstaff, ad agencies, and so on.

The City of Cape Town’s Subcouncil 7gave the green light for an Alzheimer’scentre in 3 Murray Street in Durbanvilleat its monthly meeting last Monday.

Subcouncil 7 approved an application fora temporary land use departure to accommo-date the centre.

Objectors now have a right to appealagainst the decision.

The group of owners of the existing housewant to utilise the existing house to accom-modate 29 Alzheimer’s patients in total.

They have been operating a similar facili-ty in Regent Street near the DurbanvilleRace Course and experienced a need for an-other facility for such patients.

According to the agenda the facility willnot have specific visiting hours and therewill therefore not be peak traffic during cer-tain periods of the day.

The proposed application is for temporaryrights for a period of five years only.

The approval is also subject to a list of con-ditions, including among others that no ad-vertising sign must be displayed, the road re-

serve must be landscaped and that no park-ing must take place in the road reserve ofMurray Street, as well as several restric-tions regarding the valuable trees on theproperty.

The centre will consist of 13 rooms with29 beds in total.

A local couple’s Father’s Day celebra-tions finished on a hair-raising note afterthey were attacked on their way home.

JohnBruggeman (65) andhiswife,Regina, were returning from a visit with his in-lawsin Philadelphia at around 15:00 on Sunday17 June when the incident took place.

“There were heaps of chopped wood along-side the road and we stopped to load someof it for the fireplace,” said Bruggeman whostays in Brooklyn.

There was no one in sight as the couplepulled off to the side of the road.

Bruggeman was busy loading wood intothe car’s boot when two masked men armedwith knobkerries and knives appeared as iffrom nowhere.

“They had balaclavas on. They stripped usof our possessions taking our wallets, jewel-lery and cellphones.”

As the tworobbers threatenedBruggemana third attacker manhandled his wife whohad also got out of the car to help him loadthe wood.

Apart from being traumatised the coupledid not suffer any injuries.

After the three men took what they want-ed they fled the scene.

The Bruggemans drove to a nearby moto-cross club where they contacted the police.

“When we laid the charge the police toldus that the reason the trees were cut downin that area is to provide a more clear lineof sight and to make it safer.

“I don’t know whether they were hidingin a ditch or what but they are like spooks;you don’t see them,” Bruggeman said.

Special needs passengers will be cele-brating MyCiTi’s universal access plan, which will ensure that no-one is left bythe wayside.

Ease of access for the disabled, the elderly, young children, passengers with large suit-cases, surfboards or prams, and even preg-nant women is receiving special attentionfrom MyCiTi.

“MyCiTi has such a comprehen-sive, well-considered plan that it isleading the way on universal accessin South Africa and international-ly,” says Councillor Brett Herron, mayoral committee member fortransport, roads and stormwaterfor the City of Cape Town.

“Special needs passengers consti-tute a large part of any population, but in general few of these peopleuse public transport because theyassume it is not for them. It mightnot be close enough to their homes,or they can’t board easily, or theydo not feel safe as passengers.”

The transport service hired a uni-versal access consultant who is,himself, also a wheelchair user –Guy Davies.

He says that between 10 percentand 20 percent of any population is

disabled, and one in three households inSouth Africa is affected by disability.

Universal access facilities on the MyCiTiservice include tactile paving to help theblind locate the stations and platforms; in-duction loops at ticket kiosks for the hearingimpaired; CCTV cameras monitored by acontrol centre, and even tactile signage andmaps. There will also be boarding bridgesontoall thebuses including the smaller ones.

Access easy for disabled

MyCiTi buses will cater to the needs of all commuters.

The historic discovery of a lizard was theinspiration for the new name of the Blou-berg Hill messroom that was recentlyconverted into overnight accommoda-tion.

The Friends of the Blaauwberg Conserva-tion Area in May launched a competitionasking the public to suggest suitable namesfor the old World War II messroom situatedwithin the Blaauwberg Conservation Area(BCA).

“We received 74 suggestions from read-ers,” said John Bell from Friends of BCA.

The winning suggestion was “Montispec-tus” which was submitted by Suretha Dorse.

“This celebrates the very special biodiver-sity contained in the BCA by referring to oneof its most spectacular inhabitants, the Blou-bergstrand dwarf burrowing skink (Scelotesmontispectus) which was first discovered inthe BCA,” Dorse explained.

“Montispectus means ‘to behold the moun-tain’ and therefore also appropriately cap-tures the historic setting and amazing views

from the messroom,” she said.In 2002 the first specimen of this burrow-

ing skink was discovered by two Americansin the BCA.

Given the spectacular views of TableMountain from this locality, the animal wasnamed Scelotes montispectus – montispec-tus meaning “to behold the mountain” andScelotes being the genus of dwarf burrowingskinks to which this animal belongs.

According tobiologists thepresence of thisspecies within the BCA is of immense con-servation importance, as it is considered tobe endemic to the area.

Local nature conservation staff undertookdedicated searches when conditions weresuitable. On 12 September 2005 while on sucha search field ranger Gavin Oliver rediscov-ered the missing Bloubergstrand dwarf bur-rowing skink.

. Booking details for the Montispectus ac-commodation are now available from theFriends of Blaauwberg Conservation AreaWebsite www.bca.org.za or by contacting theBiodiversity Management Branch of the citydirectly on 021 554 0957 or [email protected].

Help others in cold winterWinter is definitely upon us. As tempera-tures drop and the rain gets heavier, I can’thelp but spare a thought for the people ofCape Town who will be left out in the cold.

I am thankful for my warm bed and the lay-ers of clothes and blankets I can pile on – Iwouldn’t want to turn on a heater, that wouldbe wasting electricity. While I wish I couldhelp every homeless person in the peninsula,I know I, like many others, cannot afford to.

There are however organisations that canhelp us help others. Blankets 4 Cape Townfor instance are in their third year of collect-ing blankets for the greater Cape Town area.

Just R52 helps them buy blankets and ofcourse, the more donations they get, themore they can help. Visit their Facebookpage at www.facebook.com/blankets4ct..

A meeting missedOn Wednesday June 20 I attended an interac-tive presentation given by Bongani Mnisiand Natanya Dreyer, supported by othermembers of Biodiversity Management.

This forum was directed towards Friendsgroups, volunteers, community partnersand invested biodiversity stakeholders to es-tablish better working relationships.

The programme was brilliantly presentedand very interesting. A great deal of workhad obviously gone into the preparation. Wewere shown the organogram of the lines ofcommunication of the biodiversity branchand much more. We were given an opportu-nity to indicate the problems in our particu-lar areas with models on a huge map of the

still to be created reserve. It was therefore incredibly disappointing

that so few of the target groups attended. Itis up to us, those involved in conservation,to support this refreshing attempt by biodi-versity management to establish betterworking relations with interested and affect-ed parties and groups.

The Friends of the Paarden Eiland Wet-lands are looking forward to reaping the ben-efits of greater co-operation in future as ZoarVlei is an integral part of the about-to-beformed Table Bay Nature Reserve!

I am a disabled woman and am con-stantly having problems with able-bodied motorists utilising the disa-bled bays.

This one however takes the cake!At the new Engen garage and con-venience store in Wellington Roadin Durbanville, just look at what isparked in front of the disabled bays!

I couldn’t resist taking a photo toshow others that there is just noconcern or common sense some-times from able-bodied people.

However, it is a great garage.Even the garage attendants laughedand agreed with me that it was real-ly a daft place to place their boards.

CAROL MILLARDurbanville(Despite numerous messages to the

owner of Engen garage and conven-ience store, she only responded once, but did not leave any contact detailsand did not return any further calls.– ed.)

Local residents are asked to support theupcoming registration process of all pri-vate boreholes and wellpoints.

The registration of boreholes and well-points on all properties in the Blaauw-berg subcouncil will take place from 29to 31 August from 09:00 to 14:00 at the Mil-nerton Library in Pienaar Road.

Those who register will receive a newsign free of charge as well as a certificateof appreciation for registering.

Announcing the process at the recentsubcouncil meeting, subcouncil man-anger Heather Brenner stressed that thisinformation is strictly for environmentalmonitoring and research purposes.

“Members of the public will participateon a voluntary basis. Specific erven willbe registered, not the property owners oroccupiers themselves.

“This is not a revenue or billing exer-cise and owners or occupiers will not bebilled for their borehole or wellpoint wa-ter usage or the ownership of a boreholeor wellpoint,” she said.

Property owners with boreholes/well-point should place the sign in a positionthat is clearly visible from the outside ofthe property.

This will inform law enforcement offic-ers that a borehole/wellpoint is beingused when they enforce the city’s waterby-laws.

“Although borehole/well point waterusers are not compelled to comply withthe water restrictions relating to water-ing times as per the city’s water by-laws,they are urged to please assist the city inpreserving this precious resource,”Bren-ner said.

Kevin is deesdae ’n Mosselbaaierná 20 jaar in Gauteng. Dis hier waarhy rus gevind het, vertel hy. “Mos-selbaai herinner my aan Rusten-burg toe ek ’n kind was (Kevin ishier gebore en getoë). Dis soos ’nklein dorpie. Die mense is laid back– my soort mense.”

we.

Hierdie is ’n wen-wen-situasie,volgens Johann. “Al het jy nie tydof groen vingers nie, het jy toegangtot vars vrugte engroenteuit jou eietuin, en dit met behulp van die ste-delike boer se tyd en ondervin-ding.” ’n Belangstellingsvraelysword tans gebruik om ’n gebied sebehoefte te bepaal en mense watvan die Veggie Services gebruik wilmaak, word versoek om deel teneem deur Johann te e-pos by [email protected] of opdie webtuiste www.veggieservi-ces.co.za die vraelys in te vul.

A local gaming initiative has notonly managed to unify gamers fromacross the Cape peninsula but is al-so doing its part for charity.

Starting from humble begin-nings, 2upgamers have become abeacon for the gamers of CapeTown.

“Everything for us as gamershappened in Johannesburg,” ex-plains Bellville’s Glenn Alexander,co-founder of 2upgamers.

Alexander says they started withweekly get-togethers to create a so-cial platform for gamers. This iswhere he met Ashley O’Niell andHylton Arendse.

Together, the three decided thatthe weekly meetings had the mak-ings of something bigger.

In October last year the three-some started playing around withthe idea of hosting events on amonthly basis, inviting profession-

als in the gaming industry in Jo-hannesburg to speak at theseevents.

Their aim was to bring the indus-try to Cape Town – something theyhave done very successfully.

“It’s up to the gamer if they wantto make something happen,” Alex-ander says.

2upgamers held its first event inNovember with just 45 people andrepresentatives from Kalaha-ri.com, MWEB and local PS3 fight-ing scene organisers – Cape TownShowdown.

Since then, the team has organ-ised six themed monthly eventswith attendance numbers growingevery month. In December 80 gam-ers attended “The 2nd Wave” event.

“It was a major step, we didn’t ex-pect it,” Alexander says.

Their last event, “6th Gen”, heldat Bellville Peninsula Cricket Acad-

emy, saw 120 gamers passingthrough the doors.

Alexander says the way the localgaming community has supportedthe initiative these last few monthsis unbelievable.

The 2upgamer events are held onthe first Friday of every month withthemes related to the events. Alex-ander says gamers are now tryingto guess the name of the next eventon their Facebook page.

In January, they changed fromtheir usual Friday date to accom-modate a very special guest.

Brad Pidgeon, Community Leadfor EA Asia Pacific, Japan andSouth Africa made an appearance.

“He says what we are doing inCape Town isn’t even happening inAustralia or the UK,” Alexandersays.

Although the events started inthe southern suburbs and the City

Bowl, the team has decided to relo-cate to the northern suburbs to ac-commodate the gamers who comefrom as far as Gordon’s Bay fortheir events.

Alexander has been involved ingaming for three decades and is oneof only two official Xbox ambassa-dors in South Africa.

He is currently hard at work plan-ning the next event to be held onFriday 6 July, “The 7th Gear”.

The venue is not yet confirmed, but Top Car will be speaking abouttheir Guinness World record at-tempt for the longest time spent ona racing car game.

Alexander says there has beenhuge demand for 2upgamers to taketheir events to other parts of thecountry. People are even flying infrom Durban to be part of the CapeTown events.

Alexander is also using

2upgamers as a “gaming social in-vestment” project to help raisefunds for a number of charities.

“Whatever we make will gostraight to the local community,”Alexander says adding that theywill invite each charity to speak atthe gaming events to further helpraise awareness about these organi-sations.

Alexander stresses that the2upgamer events are for all kinds ofgamers, from the casual gamer, tothe hard core gamers, and says thateveryone is welcome.

History was made at the Hugo Lambre-chts Music Centre when the annual or-chestra concert was held there thismonth.

“The symphony orchestra took to thestage with no fewer than five pedal harpslining up at the same time,” says André Co-etzee from the Hugo Lambrechts Centre. “Arare occurrence anywhere in the world, thiswas a first for the Hugo Lambrechts audito-rium in its decade-long existence.

“It was also a first for the music centresince it opened its doors 26 years ago.”

According to harp instructor at the cen-tre, Jane Theron, the harp part in an orches-tra is normally played by just one harpist.

“It was a huge treat for so many of us tobe allowed to perform ‘Dance Bacchanale’by Saint-Saëns as a group. For whatever thereason, I don’t think any orchestra in SouthAfrica, professional or student, has everhadas many as five harps at one time – apartfrom one Barry Smith performance of theSt Cecilia Mass at St George’s Cathedral inCape Town some 30 years ago.”

The harpists performing at the concertwere Jana Opperman (one of Theron’s firststudents at Hugo Lambrechts), MelissaMcWalter (from UCT), Lisa Britz (currentHugo Lambrechts student), Nadia van Sta-den (music subject student at Hugo Lambre-chts, from Malmesbury) and Theron.

Plaaslike musieklief-hebbers mag Andre dalkonthou as lid van die mu-siek-groep, Frekwensie.

Andre is geen vreemdeling opdie verhoog nie. Hy het vorige ja-re teaterwerk gedoen en het selfsdie rol van die koning vertolk inJoseph and the Amazing Techni-color Dreamcoat.

“Ek hou van sielvolle musiek,”sê Andre.

Albusalbum op pad

Andre Albus tree Saterdag op by Da Vinci’s.

Ou Blare, ’n gesinskomedie deurdie bekroonde skrywer/akteur/re-gisseur Leon Kruger, het by van-jaar se Woordfees stampvol sale ge-trek.

Kaartjies isR110. Bespreek by 021 979 1911.

Their name, Mamela, means“listen” in Xhosa.

You can’t help but do just thatwhen this jazz band starts play-ing.

Their combination of sultry vo-cals and technical playing forcesyou to stop and take in their mod-ern sound.

Mamela, the resident jazz bandat Plaasteater, is made up of Mar-ius Doubell on bass, Fred Koch onkeyboards, Romeo Jacobs ondrums and Johan Seim on guitar, with his daughters, Raylene onsax and Rozane on vocals.

The band has been together forabout four months and whenasked how they got together,Fred says: “Slowly.”

The short version is that Mar-ius was asked to put a band to-gether for jazz events at Plaas-teater.

He made contact with Johanand his daughters and met Fredand Romeo at Plaasteater, andthe rest, as they say, is history,

Now the band plays monthly,on the third Saturday of everymonth, for Jazz jive opi plaas, atHazendal.

“We are holding back,” Mariuspoints out. He says Mamelawants to grow their repertoireand polish their performancesbefore they play outside thePlaasteater.

Their first gig away from thevenue will be in September when

they play the Citrusdal local foodfestival.

“If you look at Plaasteater, it’sa theatre, which allows us to dis-cipline ourselves before we goout there,” Rozane says.

“It’s good stage experience,”Marius says.

Mamela plays a mixture oforiginals and covers, which theyrearrange to fit their style.

“We have a mature sound,”Marius says.

Many of the originals werewritten before and brought to theband who then tackled arrange-ments together.

“Every individual has theirown experiences,” Marius points

out, before rattling off the list ofnames the band members haveplayed with. The list ranges fromAnton Goosen and Mungo Jerryto the late Robbie Jansen andTyler Perry.

They have included a Jazz Jamto their shows at Plaasteater, where they provide the opportu-nity for people who want to play, but have no place to, to get onstage.

Their next performance is onSaturday, from 14:00. There willbe food and drink for sale, as wellas braai facilities on offer.

Entrance is free. For more in-formation, [email protected].

Tarryn Glasby, a Grade 11 stu-dent at El Shaddai ChristianSchool in Durbanville, recentlybecame the youngest person tobe selected to represent SouthAfrica in the u-21 South Afri-can Hockey Squad.

The Junior World Cup will beplayed in India next year.

After the recent national squadtraining camps and u-21 Inter-Pro-vincial Tournament (IPT) held inPretoria, Tarryn was selected tothe 23-player squad to representSA in the qualifying matches forthe Junior World Cup. She is oneof five representingWesternProv-ince.

Tarryn responded to the newsmodestly, saying: “Hard work al-ways pays off.”

Tarryn’s mesmerising skill, ex-ecuted with scorching pace and le-thal finishing, made an impact in2012 when she represented WP atthe u-21 IPT in Pretoria, netting 10goals for WP and resulting in Tar-ryn being named the top goal scor-er and also the most promisingplayer.

Tarryn is no stranger to playing

in higher leagues, having playedin hockey teams one or two agegroups higher than her own sinceprimary school. She has repre-sented WP since 2007 and at thetender age of 14 made her WPWomen’s Grand Challenge debut, turning out for the Durbanvillewomen’s hockey team.

In 2010 she was selected for theSA u-16 high performance squad. The following year she retainedher SA u-16 status with a clinical10-goal spree as vice-captain of theWestern Province team at the 2011IPT. She rounded off this remark-able achievement with threeawards: IPT winner’s medal, topgoal scorer, and the most promis-ing striker. The inevitable call-upto the 2012 national u-21 women’shockey squad training campscame shortly thereafter.

Tarryn also represents herschool team, where she is coachedby her mother, Tracey Glasby. The hockey spokesperson for ElShaddai, Tess Rodrigues, said sheis excited for Tarryn, and is look-ing forward to Tarryn unleashingher sensational strike-rate in theinternational arena.

For most golfers the dream of play-ing the Old Course at St Andrews inScotland will remain just that, butfor Hugo du Toit this dream will be-come a reality this week.

Du Toit (Bellville) will representSouth Africa in the World One-armOpen Championship from 30 Juneto 6 July.

St Andrews is widely regarded asthe cradle of the game. This yeargolfers from 27 countries will tee offin this the 75th edition of the tour-nament which was originallyfounded to accommodate soldierswounded in World War I.

Says Du Toit: “I’m cerebrally dis-abled in the left side of my body, soI can only play with my right hand.Golf is my passion in life and I will

be forever grateful for the opportu-nities this game has presented me.

“I’ve had the privilege to work atFancourt, Arabella and DeZalzewhich are some of the premierclubs in the country,” he says.

“In previous championships weplayed on some spectacular coursesin Ireland and Scotland.

“I’ve made it to the semi-finals onthree occasions and won our South

African One-arm Championship in1998, 1999 and 2003,” he says.

“The Old Course is somethingspecial, I have had the honour ofwalking on the course a few timesbut never played on it.

“We also have the courtesy toplay practise rounds before thetournament starts,” said Du Toitwith a smile.

Du Toit says the respect they re-

ceive from other golfers is amazing.“It is always uplifting and special

to see the impact we as disabledgolfers have on the ‘normal’ golfers. They have the utmost respect for usand how good some of us can playthe game.

“The camaraderie is fantastic, and just one of the reasons why thisis the greatest game ever played,”he said.

Local jetskier Jake Montandon is flyinghigh following two good performancesduring the opening events of the IFWAWorld tour in Europe.

Montandon travelled to Portugal in Maywhere he met up with good friend and fellowrider Zack Bright.

The two arrived a few days before the com-petition to acclimatise and to study the wavesat Sintra beach.

“I soon realised that the conditions wereperfect for great wave riding and even betterfor aerial tricks. I was excited and knew thatI would do great,” a confident Montandon saidlast week.

Travelling anywhere to compete on an unfa-miliar break is always a gamble for watersportsmen.

“I know my riding in SA is always top notchand would like to keep it at that standard orbetter in any competition internationally,”Montandon said.

In Portugal he came up against the currenttop riders in the world.

“It was tough but I won most of my heatsand got through to the semi-finals.”

The Portugal event saw him compete witha sponsored ski with different specificationsto the one he is used to at home.

The completely different hull of the spon-sored Overall ski seemed to suit the South Af-rican.

“It turned out that I loved riding the OverallSki and I was able to come away with fourthplace. I was very happy and it gave me the con-fidence to go all out in France.”

The two travelled from Portugal to Franceby car and in between stopped off in Spainwhere they did some filming for an actionsport television channel Fuel TV.

“It was so much fun and a memorable expe-rience. Stu von Lockley did the filming and hisprofessional attitude made it easy and fun toget the most awesome shots and lifestyle film-ing done,” Montandon said.

The wave conditions in France were smalland not as good as in Portugal.

“Riding a full carbon hull from Overall witha bigger motor made it possible for me to stillperform at my best,” he said.

By this time he felt right at home on the newski.

Although the competition started on FridayMontandon only had to ride his first heat onthe Sunday thanks to qualifying for the topeight in Portugal.

“The heats were tough and intense. I com-peted against the best, it felt good and my con-fidence was way up.”

Montandon won most of this heats includ-ing the one in which he faced off against hisfriend Bright which took him into overallthird place.

“Climbing onto that podium among theworld’s best was the greatest, proudest experi-ence ever,” an elated Montandon said.

This is only the second year the 29-year-oldhas competed on the international circuit andhe is convinced he can become world champ.

“I believe that I can be first this year if I dowell in the last two legs of the tour. My currentplacing on the world ranking is tied for third. My future and dreams is reachable.”
