he N7 highway was shut down over the

weekend amid an attempted land inva-

sion. The drama unfolded shortly after

noon on Saturday when motorists reported

seeing Dunoon residents trying to invade

    land along the highway.

    Milnerton police cluster spokesperson

Constable Henry du Randt explains at

around 09:00 about 200 residents occupied

private property as well as land owned by

the City of Cape Town. The Citys Anti-land

    InvasionUnit dismantled the structures and

Du Randt says the crowd began throwing

stones at police and making fires.

Police responded by firing rubber bullets.

TygerBurger arrived at the scene on the

N7 shortly after noon and witnessed resi-

    dents marking out plots.

Residents refused to be interviewed but

said they were fed up with government and

    needed land for houses.

    They toldTygerBurger theyweremarking

the areas and would return the next day to

    build.TygerBurger received several false re-

ports about violence along the highway

    while on the scene.

    Shortly after 18:00,TygerBurger accompa-

nied Du Randt to the N7 which at this stage

lice were patrolling the highway and con-

tained the protest inside Dunoon. The

shouts of protesters could be heard as thick

clouds of smoke from burning tyres hung

    over the highway.

Du Randt then proceeded toMilnerton po-

lice station where senior police officers met

to discuss how to tackle the protest. Here

more than 30Metro Police officers geared up

in the parking lot ready to enter Dunoon.

    Milnerton police spokesperson Warrant

Officer Daphne OReilly says on Saturday

four people aged between 38 and 46 were ar-

    rested for public violence.

hey are going to shoot me; I want

to go tomymommy! These are re-

portedly the words uttered by a

young girl from Joe Slovo amid violent taxi

protests which rocked the settlement last

    week.

    The drama unfolded on Tuesdaymorning

when rioting taxi drivers hurled stones and

    burned tyres and bins.

A taxi driver told TygerBurger they were

protesting about the roll-out of newMyCiTi

    routes.

Speaking to TygerBurger after the pro-

tests, Phoenix residents raised the alarm

saying they feared for their safety. They

claim the problems started long before

    Tuesdayand sayover theweekend taxi driv-

ers could be seen congregating in an open

field in Phoenix. Residents say Phoenix and

Joe Slovo residents were terrified as shots

rang and vehicles were burned. Due to the

close proximity of the two areas, many resi-

dents spent thenight gripped in fear as tyres

burned and tear gas filled the air.

According to them the young girl from

Joe Slovo was found crying, walking

through Phoenix streets, and was assisted

by a resident who walked with the young

girl to Joe Slovo amid the riot.

    While residents in surrounding areas

    foundalternative routes toworkand school,

Phoenix residents say they were caught in

    the middle.

    Wewere sitting ducks. Therewasnoway

we could avoid the riots and our lives came

to a standstill as we couldnt get in or out.

What everybody doesnt realise is that amid

all of this innocent people in Joe Slovo and

Phoenix are suffering. It was only a very

small percentage of people, yet the majority

of us suffer, says a Phoenix man.

A Mars Road resident says children were

most affected and says his own daughter

was traumatised. We could hear the cars

being stoned and the loud shouting. It was

horrible. How are we supposed to explain

this to our children? We were too scared to

    leave our homes.

During the protests the City of Cape Town

reported the attack on the Phoenix MyCiTi

    station.

According to a statement released by City

of Cape TownMayco member for transport,

Brett Herron, the attack on the station has

    been reported to Milnerton police.

    Furthermore, a MyCiTi bus operating

along Route 251 (Century City, Montague

Gardens) was stoned in Montague Drive at

around 09:30 this morning (Tuesday 15

    March). Thankfully, nobody was injured.

There is absolutely no excuse for this crimi-

nal behaviour. The City will assist in what-

ever way we can to identify the perpetra-

tors. A criminal case has been opened and

the local police station in Milnerton is in-

vestigating these incidents. I am confident

that those responsible will be apprehend-

    ed.

The extent of the damage to the station is

still being assessed and the costs will be de-

    termined in due course.

The Phoenix station will be closed for at

least two to three weeks. This is a huge in-

convenience to the approximately 1200 com-

muters who make use of this station on a

    daily basis.

    Police spokesperson Warrant Officer

Daphne OReilly said one case of malicious

damage to property (Phoenix station) and

three cases of public violence were opened

    last week.

In the first of three public violence cases,

a docket was opened on Monday 14 March

after a taxi driver reported he was blocked

off by a Quantum taxi in Montague Drive.

He was surrounded by eight taxi drivers

participating in the riot and robbed him of

    his money.

Later the afternoon the vehicle was spot-

ted by Metro Police members who pulled

over the vehicle. Three suspects ran away.

OReilly says Metro Police members appre-

hended one of the taxi drivers and he is cur-

    rently in custody.

He is facing charges of robbery and the

search continues for the other two sus-

    pects.

On the same day, another taxi driver re-

ported being robbed and his taxi damaged

while driving it near Summer Greens.

On Tuesday 15 March a docket was

opened following the burning of a truck and

the hurling of stones on the corner of Free-

    dom and Democracy ways.

Milnerton police opened a third public vi-

olence case on Thursday 17 March when a

taxi driver started spinning the wheels of

his taxi and obstructed other motorists in

    Omuramba Road.

Metro Police approached him and used

their siren to get him to move. Three sus-

pects then started throwing stones at the

Metro Police vehicle and officers fired three

warning shots. The suspects ran away.

OReilly says various robbery cases were

opened following attacks on taxi drivers

who continued to operate during the pro-

    test.

The protests were also a hot topic in the

    Blaauwberg subcouncil meeting last week

    asDunoonward councillor LubabaloMaka-

leni says parents are concerned about

school children being prevented from ac-

    cessingpublic transport. In additionhe says

taxi drivers tried to convince community

    leaders in Dunoon to join.

Theywanted to bring Dunoon to a stand-

still, butwe told them they couldnt do that.

According to a statement by theCity of Cape

Town, a group of protesters linked to an ille-

gal land grab in Dunoon attacked and van-

dalised the MyCiTi Dunoon station in Pots-

dam Road on Sunday at about 16:30.

The Mayco member for transport, Brett

Herron, says commuters and a security

guard fled the scene when protesters threw

rocks and objects at the station building,

causing damage to the glass panels and exte-

    rior of the building.

Nobody was injured during the attack,

but the T01 and T04 services along Potsdam

Road were suspended for the rest of the

evening with buses turning around at the

Potsdam station. Police and Law Enforce-

ment officers were on the scene, closing

Potsdam Road to traffic at the intersection

with Blaauwberg Road as from 17:00 on-

    wards.

This, he said, was the secondattack in five

    days on MyCiTi station infrastructure.

There is absolutely no excuse for this

criminal and thuggish behaviour. The ex-

tent of the damage to both stations is still

being assessed and the costs will be deter-

mined in due course, save to say that those

who will suffer the most are the communi-

ties of Dunoon and Joe Slovo who will not

be able to use the Dunoon and Phoenix sta-

tions for a number of weeks while the build-

    ings are repaired.

On Monday the T01 and T04 services re-

turned tonormal, with buses stopping at the

    Usasaza andKillarney stations. Commuters

fromDunoon are advised to use theUsasaza

station for the time being. Buses operating

along Route T04 from Dunoon to Century

City, are still being deviated along Race-

course Road, into Koeberg Road, onto Bos-

mansdam Road and into Ratanga Road,

as the Phoenix station is not operational.

    T

able View residents have launched a

scathing attack on the City of Cape

    Town accusing senior politicians of

    political grand standing when comment-

ing on the condition of the beach front.

The issue unfolded after a daily newspa-

per ran an article on the deterioration of the

beachfront. This was followed by a radio in-

terview with Table View Ratepayers Asso-

    ciation (TVRA) chairperson Leon Alhadeff

and Mayco member for community servi-

ces and special projects, Belinda Walker.

    Walkers assistant subsequently invited

Alhadeff to a site visit onMonday 14March.

On Friday 11 March, TygerBurger received

information that the radio station and

newspaper had been copied in on the invita-

tion and requested permission to attend.

The Citys media office declined, indicat-

ing that this was not a media event and no

    media had been invited.

TygerBurger then sent the invitation as

proof and wrote: Primedia and the Argus

were copied in on the mail so nothing pre-

vents them from showing up as they were

given the details. Hence I thought I would

be nice and request permission to attend.

    No response was received.

    Site visit cancelled

On Monday 14 March the site visit was

cancelled and Alhadeff voiced his dissatis-

faction. In a letter to the City official who

cancelled the event on behalf of Walker, he

    questioned whether the cancellation was

due to Walker not wanting to be confronted

    with the truthofwhatwashappening on the

    beachfront.

As keen as I was to partake in this in-

spection with aldermanWalker for the cor-

rect reasons, I must highlight that cancella-

tion just short of two (2) hours before the

event is not acceptable and cannever be suf-

ficiently explained away with a conflicting

    diary, he wrote.

According toWalker she had to attend an-

other meeting at this time but has engaged

with the local ward councillor regarding

    the condition of this beach.

I have weekly feedback sessions on a

number of priority issues within the com-

munity services directorate with the execu-

tive director and this is one of the agenda

items. As such, please be assured that a

close eye is kept on this project, among

    many other priority projects occurring

    along the coastline.

The TVRA instead hosted its own press

conference on the beach on Thursday

17 March where residents raised concerns

about the collapsed paving, the erosion of

dunes, lack of access for disabledpeople and

illegal shelters being erected in the dunes.

    Ablution upgrade cost R1,5m

    During the walk, Alhadeff highlighted

    the various improvements, including new

grass being laid, undertaken in the last

week. He said in the last week the associa-

    tion had noted significant improvements

which they believewas done ahead ofWalk-

    ers planned site visit.

    They also accused Walkers department

of only taking action because they had

been called out in the press.

Walker says claims that workwas rushed

ahead of her visit is incorrect. She says

landscapingwork is underway by the parks

department and includes the planting of the

grass at the beachfront, on the section from

the old tourism centre towards the first

    pathway.

The planting of the grass will be com-

plete in the next few weeks and came to a

cost of R200 000. An open gym has also been

installed in the area for recreational use.

However, during the walk a resident

    highlighted the equipment was faulty.

Walker says the ablution facilities were

refurbished over the past two years and the

damage caused recently by vandalism has

been repaired. The ablution upgrade was

done at a cost ofmore thanR1,5million over

    two years.

Asked to respond to claims that the City

is allowing the beachfront to deteriorate,

Walker says: All infrastructure along the

coast is affected by windblown sand. This

is a reality for all coastal amenities. The

continual removal of sand is very costly and

time consuming and stabilisation of the

dunes is themost sustainable and cost-effec-

tive solution. However, due to the strict en-

    vironmental regulations associated with

    coastal environments and ecosystems, such

an exercise requiresmuch planning and re-

    search.

In addition she explains there is an ap-

    proved Maintenance Management Plan

(MMP) in place that is aimed at ensuring

the rehabilitation of the Table View Beach-

    front dune system.

    TheMMPwill be guidedby theoutcomes

of a dune study that is being undertaken by

an external dune specialist who is in the

process of finalising the study. Major work

to rehabilitate the dune will take place in

the new financial year during winter,

which is a suitable time to do the earth-

    works and planting.

Once the dunes have been rehabilitated,

repairs to the parking area will commence.

All work will be restricted within the park-

ing area only and the work area will be cor-

doned off to ensure public safety. The park-

ing areas asphalt surface will be neatly cut

    backandanyunsuitablematerialwill be ex-

    cavated.

    Irrigation repairs R700 000

Questioned about R700 000 spent on irri-

gation,Walker explains the first of fourpha-

ses of the irrigation system is currently be-

ing installed on the dune system at Dolphin

Beach this is due to be completed by the

    end of June.

The irrigation repairs come to approxi-

mately R700 000 and the posts and other re-

    pair andmaintenanceworkwill come to ap-

proximatelyR550 000 for this financial year.

Once the dunes have been rehabilitated, re-

pairs to the parking area will commence.

During the walk a disabled man high-

lighted the lack of access to the beach.Walk-

er says prior to commencing a repairs and

maintenance plan to the boardwalks, an

analysis of the current status of all access

points to the beaches between Sunset Beach

and Small Bay is being done.

This study will assist in understanding

the following regarding each access point:

    pedestrian traffic volume, disabled-friendly

    access points, water sport-friendly access

    points, and durability, among others.

AtMarine Circle an entire ablution block

has been buried in sand and according to

Walker this was built at a time before coast-

    al processes were adequately understood

and is located in the path of a moving dune.

    barbaarse en onwettige protesaksies en die beskadiging van eiendom;

    maksimaal te ontwikkel omwaarde toe te voegwaar dit enigsinsmoontlik is;

    Suid-Kaapmaksimaal stimuleer;

    te voldoen aan die uitstaande grondeise eerder as ombestaande landbou te destabiliseer;

    gevestigdeminderheidsgemeenskappe verg dringend aandag vir die versekering van hul viskwotas;

    teengestaanword;

    belastingbetalers gehangword nie;

    geduldword nie;

    economic improvements' te besteemoet dringend ingeperk word tot bekostigbare vlakke;

    permanente oplossing kan nie langer uitgestel word nie;

he owner of Fair DealMotors in Brook-

lyn along with two employees are in

court for fraud cases amounting to R1.7

    million.

    Last weekMilnerton police celebrated the

good work done by Warrant Officer Andre

Pekeur who helped arrest the 58-year-old

man and his employees following 12 cases of

    fraud.

    Police spokesperson Warrant Officer

Daphne OReilly says the lengthy investiga-

tion stretched over five months and the sus-

pects appeared in court on Friday 11 March.

    She explains the complainants reported

that they left their vehicles at above-men-

tioned business to be sold. Once the vehicles

were sold the outstanding balance would be

paid to the financial institutions where the

    vehicles were purchased.

After this the remaining profit would be

divided between the original owner and the

    dealership.

When the complainants returned to the

dealership to enquire about the sale of their

vehicles they found the premises vacant.

    The dealership is currently closed.

The total value of the vehicles in the 12 cas-

es is R1.7 million. The investigation was

headed by Pekeur and the fraud unit at Mil-

nerton Police Station. The complainants al-

    leged that theyvisited thebusiness premises

to followupon the sale of their vehicles, only

    to find the premises vacant.

And while the case has been postponed

and the trio are expected to be back in court

onWednesday 4May, police expect the char-

    ges to mount.

OReilly says while only 12 cases have

been reported for investigation, there are

    more than 20 complainants.

Police are now requesting vehicle owners

who have similar complaints about the deal-

    ership to come forward.

    olwerivier residents are rallying to

    create street committees to help

keep their community safe. Due to

the absence of street lights, residents say

criminals creep in the dark looking for an

    opportunity to steal valuables.

In the past week, several burglaries have

been reported at Philadelphia Police Sta-

tion and officers are now looking for ways

to get residents involved in crimefighting.

    Before relocating to Wolwerivier, resi-

dents who lived in Skandaalkamp say they

had informal street committees who would

keep watch at night. Since relocating, the

activities of these committees have dwin-

dled as residents are occupied with trying

    to find work and transport.

Many have now inserted burglar bars

and barbed wire around their homes in an

attempt to safeguard their properties and

while there are no actual roads in the Incre-

    mental Development Area (IDA), residents

plan to mark sections and delegate respon-

    sibility.

Rossouw says due to the location of the

    IDA, policing is often difficult.

When an incident is reported we react

immediately, but it is far from the station

and this area is very dark at night, so that

slows our response time. If you look at the

condition of the road, its difficult to drive

there in the day and at night we have to be

    extra cautious, he says.

Residents explain while the City of Cape

Town relocated various communities to the

IDA temporarily, they had no indication of

how long they would remain. In the mean-

time they plan to take ownership and root

out the skollies in their midst.

    Rossouw says theWolwerivier communi-

ty is vulnerable and just outside the settle-

ment they are being targeted by two men

in a grey Toyota Avanza. He explains in re-

    centweeks individualsmaking theirway to

work have been offered a lift by the occu-

    pants of this vehicle.

People in Wolwerivier often dont have

money for transport to get to work, so they

hike. We have had reports of two men stop-

ping to offer these people lifts around the

area near the N7. They usually only take

one person and then rob them of the little

    they have, he says.

While Rossouwwarns residents to be vig-

ilant, he says a street committee structure

will help form a communication channel

between police and residents. Next month

they plan to host a public meeting with all

residents to discuss the formation of street

    committees.

It will be difficult to start up but we are

confident that this is the bestway forward.

Watches to get training as officers

Members of the Table View and Parklands neighbourhood watches will soon undergo training as law enforcement auxiliary officers and will be able

to tackle various by-law infringements including vagrancy and illegal dumping in greenbelts. PHOTO: MONIQUE DUVAL

    W

    hile Table View residents continue

to grind their teeth about the wide

    array of by-law infringements, the

Community Police Forum has proposed a

    new solution.

If all goes according to plan, CPF chairper-

son David Harris saysmembers of the Table

    View and Parklands neighbourhood watch-

es will soon be trained as Law Enforcement

    Auxiliary Officers.

This follows talks between the CPF and

City of Cape TownMaycomember for safety

    and security, JP Smith.

Harris says amid complaints and con-

cerns about vagrants and illegal dumping,

the CPF hopes once the training is complet-

ed more people will help to take action. Dur-

ing community clean-ups and walks watch

members have raised concerns about va-

grancy anddumping in greenbelts and along

the beachfront as themain areas of concern.

Once they are trained, the Table View

precinct will have residents who live here

who can tackle these issues and possibly we

could have a 24/7 service. If you look at the

complaints, most of the issues arise from by-

    law infringements. The auxiliary officers

will have some authority to tackle these is-

sues and we can make Table View better for

    all.

According to Smith, a total of 25 candi-

dates from neighbourhood watches in Table

View and surrounding areaswill be trained.

The training for the Table View area is

currently only for members of a neighbour-

hood watch to increase force multipliers in

    the area.

Among some of the requirements are that

watch members will have to be 18 years or

older, completedGrade 10, belong to a neigh-

bourhood watch and have no criminal re-

corded or any cases pending against them.

The City does screen for pending cases,

checks for any convictions, and also does a

substance abuse test. In terms of the Crimi-

nal Procedure Act, a person cannot be ap-

pointed as a peace officer if they have a crim-

    inal record.

Candidates are also required to have com-

pleted the BrokenWindows theory and be in

good standing in their neighbourhood be-

    fore they can undergo training.

Smith says the candidates undergo a pre-

liminary test through the Metro Police Col-

lege and after successful completion of the

test, the candidate will undergo the basic

peace officer training at the college for a pe-

riod of three weeks daytime or six weeks

    night-time.

The training is accredited training and

deals with various aspects of the law such

as handling and collecting evidence, how to

carry out and effect arrests, the rights and

procedures as indicated by the Criminal

ProceduresAct, and the proper procedure to

    conduct search and seizure operations.

After the training the results and finger-

prints are sent to the South African Police

Service for police clearance. Once the clear-

ance certificates are issued, the members

are appointed and start with a field training

    programme.

The candidate must complete the field

training programme before being allowed to

    work independently with their neighbour-

    hoodwatch as aLawEnforcementAuxiliary

(LEA) officer. This process can take up to

three months from start to finish.

Once qualified the auxiliary officer has

the same powers as a permanent Law En-

    forcement officer.

Once the field training is completed, they

    can operatewithout a full-timeLawEnforce-

    ment officer.

    Volunteers and auxiliary officers must

do a minimum of 16 hours of service per

    month, he concludes.

    Police spokesperson Lieuten-

of the suspects entered the store

and kept the door open for an-

    other accomplice.

    One of the men threatened

    the personnel with a firearm.

The staffs hands were tied with

    cable ties. The men disarmed

    the alarmand removed the hard

drive from the camera in the

guard in an effort to distract

    him from what was happening

    inside the store.

    SLICE OF LIFE

Oom

kerkklok en ek was vas oortuig hy slaap

in die kerktoring, want hy was altyd net

dr. Hyt ons geskel as ons voete gesleep

    het Sondagskoolklas toe.

Ekt gewonder hoe hy gaan skel sonder

n tong. Want oom Koster gaan gesond

word en terugkom die hele gemeente

    het immers vir hom gebid.

Kanker was destyds soos n tienerswan-

    gerskap of egskeiding. Niemand het

daaroor gepraat of geskinder nie. Gewon-

der dalk, maar nie geprt nie.

Ons het oom Koster nooit weer gesien

    nie.

Twintig jaar later was dit my pa se

    beurt om die

    Groot K in die o

    te staar.

    Die dag toe hy

    nie meer sy

    Sudoku-raaisel kon

    invul nie, was die

    dag dat ek geweet

    het dis tyd om

    vrede te maak en

    koebaai te s.

    Wr het die

    kerk en my ma-hul-

    le gebid dat die

    Liewe Vader hom

    moet spaar. Ekt

    moet sterf.

Van die familie het my uitgekryt as n

ongelowige.

my opgevreet ... net di wat in n Calvi-

nistiese huis grootgeword het, sal regtig

verstaan.

rou oor my pa.

dood. My broers en my ma was gebroke.

Want solank daar hoop is,

    ongenaakbare siekte.

Ek weet daar is verhale van hoop, van

mense wat kanker oorwin het. Dit bied n

    mate van troos.

Al wat n mens kan hoop, is dat

daardie beker by jou verby sal gaan.

    Re: Concern over beggars

(TB, 16 March). While I am

    sympathetic to the plight of

jobless people, there have to be

other ways to provide for ones

child than endangering it at an

    intersection.

    These children and their

    mothers are so vulnerable to

injury by passing cars or to be

a casualty of a motor accident

which may occur at an inter-

    section.

    The mothers sit in the

boiling sun for most of the day,

    subjecting the little ones to

    excessive heat.

    Their development is surely

    compromised. They should be

    playing (hopefully safely) in

    natural surroundings learning

    about objects and words from

    their mothers. There seems to

    be no interaction between

    mother and child.

    I consider what is happening

at the intersections as a form

of child abuse. Surely you do

    not deliberately put your child

    into a potentially dangerous

    situation? Surely the welfare

    departments have some

    authority here?

    Too many people in our

According to a statement by the City of

    App connects local community

    MONIQUE DUVAL

    @monique_duval

    A

re you often in need of a service in

Blouberg and have no idea where to

    start looking?

Well, look no further a Parklands resi-

dent has created an app to connect the

    Blouberg community.

Created by Gary le Roux, the Blouberg

Community App has launched and is now

accessible on any device with an internet

    connection.

Optimised to be on the go

The concept, he explains, is simple. It

lists all businesses, services and communi-

ty events among others in the greater

Blouberg area and surrounds so residents

and visitors can have quick access to any

    information they require.

The concept is to link local businesses,

services and community events to the resi-

dent and visitor and vice versa, linking the

resident and visitor to local businesses,

services and events and the app is opti-

    mised for on the go.

Le Roux explains he has been thinking

about creating the app for a few years now

and first thought of the idea when he need-

ed to get hold of a service but had no idea

    where to look.

The idea was simple to provide a ser-

vice best suited for todays times, linking

the resident and visitor to the business,

service or community event, and vice ver-

    sa.

    Please refer tomywrite-upbelowwhich

also gives answers and more in-depth in-

    formation.

The idea for something like this has

been in the back ofmymind for a few years

already. I only started to put my thoughts

down over the past year or so and devel-

oped this app to its finality over the past

    couple of months.

    Categories include restaurants, bars and

    nightclubs, community events, churches,

    plumbers, electricians, builders, handy-

men, shops, motoring, real estate, travel

agents, doctors, hospitals and clinics, pool

    accessories and many others.

The app also lists value adds for the resi-

dent and visitor such as emergency num-

bers, weather, MyCiTi bus routes and stop

timetables, a surf report, at themovies and

lost and found pets. This, he says, offers

residents and visitors added value at the

    touch of a button.

With just a few clicks, you can have in-

    stant relevant information within the

greater Blouberg area and surrounds at

    your disposal optimised for todaysworld

of quick, instant, simple and reliable infor-

mation at the touch of a button.

The app is free for users but Le Roux ex-

plains businesses pay a nominal fee to be

    listed.

The fee is kept nominal as I want every

business or service to be able to have the

chance to be listed on this app. It is an ad-

vertising platform for them but the app is

totally free for the user, no costs whatsoev-

    er besides your data connection.

    Reviews allowed

The app also allows users to give reviews

of services by using a form.

The resident or visitor can rate the ser-

vice received by the business in their own

words and submit the form. The form will

then be emailed automatically and directly

to myself and I will then add the reviews

received onto each businesses advert for

    extra value add.

rom sampling indigenous bird life to his

blend of genres infused with tribal

echoes, Xavier Rudds music is an ethe-

    real experience.

    The Australian multi-instrumentalist will

be bringing his otherworldly sounds to Cape

Town next week when he performs at the

Parklife Festival on Monday 28 March.

Xavier grew up in what he calls a coastal

bush town in Australia where he was al-

ways teaching himself to play the different

instruments he now surrounds himself with

on stage, like the guitar, harmonica, yi-

daki, banjo, lap steel guitar, percussion and

    the didgeridoo.

The soft-spoken musician says he was

pretty shy to start off with, but once he

started performing in front of people, he just

kept moving forward. Today he travels the

    world doing my thing.

Widely considered to be an activist, Xavi-

ers music carries messages of social con-

    sciousness, environmentalism and human

    rights.

The impression of Aboriginal people here

in Australia is something thats always been

    the closest to my heart.

Xavier feels a lot of lessons about racism

should have been learnt in South Africa al-

    ready.

His experience of this country is based on

his exposure from working with the 60-year-

old Southern Sotho bassist Tio Moloantoa

Tio has shared his insights into apartheid

    from his perspective.

Hewas always very humble and very pos-

itive and always said that South Africa was

the greatest place in the world.

For Xavier, the issue ismore about the big-

ger picture. Its always made to be a human

    thing, he says.

In terms of our earth, were no different

than a leaf on a tree or a blade of glass; were

    all part of the system.

Its about time that everyone just laid

down their weapons, so to speak, and just re-

membered our connection to land and look

after our land as one people.

Tio isnt the only SouthAfrican Xavier has

    worked with. Together with percussionist

Andile Nqubezelo, Tio and Xavier released

Koonyum Sun as Xavier Rudd and Izintaba

in 2010. Tio also plays as a member of Xavier

Rudd and the United Nations, who released

Nanna last year. Xavier says the group, made

up of members from around the world, came

    about quite organically.

All the members just appeared, pretty

    much.

Together, they share a message of all peo-

ple coming together around the globe to re-

turn to spirit, respect the ancient ways and

protect the earthand thevery essenceof crea-

    tion.

The title of activist is not somethingXavier

thinks about. I dont see it like that, he

says. I just believe what I believe and I have

an opportunity sometimes to get what I be-

lieve to a larger audience and I just do. He

says its something that simply makes sense

    to him.

Were all in this together and this change

needs to happen around the world. We all

need to dowhatever we can, it doesnt matter

    what it is.

    Akeensurfer,Xavier saysa lot of hismusic

was written in the water. I spend a lot of

time surfing and writing in my head.

His inspiration comes from that feeling,

that power of dancing with Mother Nature.

This connection iswhat helps himmake sure

    hes singing from the soul.

    Capetonians can experience the connec-

tion on Monday when Xavier will perform a

mix of new and older material at the Parklife

Festival at Green Point Stadium (next to Ha-

miltons Cricket Club). The line-up for the

festival also includes American band Civil

Twilight along with local acts Jeremy Loops,

    Desmond & The Tutus
