THINKING ABOUT TREATING YOURSELF to a new winter coat? If you haven’t started to look for a winter coat now is a really good time! They’re already in the shops and you will want to buy the best one before it sells out – and before the weather is freezing cold.

A winter coat is a serious investment – not a one-season fling, it’s a long-term relationship. You’ll be wearing this coat more often than anything else in your wardrobe, so it has to work from top to toe. Let’s start with the most important things your winter coat needs to do:• Keep you warm and dry• Fit perfectly and be comfortable• Look fabulous

• Make you feel like a million dollars when you’re wearing it

HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND? Go for the maximum you can afford. If you need to convince yourself about this, think about the cost per wear. Bear in mind that this coat will be the first thing that people notice about you. Get it right and you’re guaranteed to turn heads and feel gorgeous, no matter what the winter weather throws at you. If you can, it’s worth spending a few hundred pounds.

TRENDY OR CLASSIC?It’s best to avoid high fashion. A bang-on-trend coat may be tempting but the chances are, this time next year it will look a bit... last year. A classic coat never goes out of style and can be trended up – a scarf, brooch, boots, or an amazing hat and of course a fabulous handbag! Accessorising is an easy way to change the look of your coat in an instant.

BEFORE YOU START SHOPPING... Think carefully about how you’ll be wearing your winter coat. For example, when you’re on the school run, clambering on and off buses or the tube it’s best to avoid too much length. A pavement sweeping number can look gorgeously elegant but escalators will eat the hem.Think about your lifestyle. Do you spend a lot of time in your car; do a lot of walking, going outdoors to indoors and back again? It’s easy to get too hot. Look out for a lightweight coat with a

cashmere/wool mix. It will be warm without the bulk and weight of a 100% wool coat. Don’t forget about pockets. When it’s cold, they’ll be your winter friends.

PEGGY’S PANTRY IN the heart of Strawberry Hill, is well know by local residents for

its tasty cakes, sandwiches and coffee. Here Peggy shares a favourite recipe for her fun and delicious fruit ‘n’ fizz jellies.

We all love blueberries, and they are so good for your health. These refreshing jellies will settle those sweet cravings you might have after dinner, made with Prosecco, a dash of lime and fresh blueberries, this stunning yet simple make-ahead dessert is a stress-free way to delight your friends and family.

Blueberry, Lime and Prosecco Jellies

INGREDIENTS

200g blueberries

6 sheets of leaf gelatine

Summer Berry Cordial, dilluted, about a glass

Juice of 2 limes

2 teaspoons of sugar

1 glass of Prosecco chilled (optional)

Mint leaves to decorate

METHOD

1. Divide the berries into four 50ml moulds or dessert glasses and chill.

2. Make jelly by soaking the gelatine sheets in cold water for about five minutes until soft.

3. Squeeze out all excess water and put the sheets into a bowl over a pan of simmering water together with cordial, lime and sugar.

4. Heat until sugar and gelatin have dissolved then set aside to cool.

5. Pour the mixture into a jug, add the prosecco and pour over the berries.

6. Chill for at least 4 hours.

7. When you are ready to eat the jelly, dip the moulds into hot water, press a serving plate over the mould, shake slightly and flip over to turn out. If mixed in a glass serve as it is - much easier as no need to turn them out.

8. Decorate with a few mint leaves, very refreshing ...And enjoy.

Saturday 14th November, 12 – 1.30 pm Draw-off Talk and WalkJoin the Environmental Trust for their annual

visit to see behind the scenes at Port of

London Authority’s Richmond Half Lock, which

maintains river levels through Richmond and

Twickenham up to Teddington. At the Draw-

off during the month of November, the Port of

London Authority carries out maintenance on the

Lock and the river reverts to its normal levels,

exposing much of the river bed at low tide.

The tour of the Lock, guided by the lock keeper,

provides us with an insight into the history that

led to its building and a close-up sight of its

amazing Victorian mechanisms.

The Lockkeeper’s talk will be followed by a walk,

led by Pamela McHutchon a Blue Badge Tourist

Guide, heading towards Richmond Bridge where

the walk will end. Please wear suitable clothes

you don’t mind getting dirty. Wellies maybe a

good idea!

a winter coat now is a really good time! They’re already in the shops and you will want to buy the best one before it sells out – and before the weather is freezing cold.

A NUMBER OF RESIDENTS have written to your local councillors expressing their concern and

I thought that it would be helpful to see part of the response of Councillor Lord True, Leader of Richmond Council.

‘Thank you for writing to me about the tragic consequences of the Syrian civil war and the rise of Islamic State. This has led to the displacement of many million people, of whom a significant number are still in Syria, where they have fled for protection to the areas still controlled by the Government. An enormous amount is being done in Jordon, Lebanon and Turkey ... to help refugees in safe camps, although these camps do need investment to build infrastructure of schools, jobs and housing that will enable people to help rebuild their country when the conflict is over.’

‘I am pleased the government has committed some £1,000 million to support of these safe havens. I wish other governments were equally forthcoming. UK support has enabled delivery of 18 million food rations (each of which feeds a person for month), access to clean water for 1.6 million people and provided 2.5 million medical consultations. Many people are contributing generously to this effort via charities, I am sure the Prime Minister is right in saying that this, in the longer term is the better route than seeing, or even encouraging people, to risk the hazardous and dangerous journey to safe havens further afield, often putting themselves at the mercy of criminal traffickers...’

What specifically is happening now? The Government has announced a scheme for initial five-year entry for 20,000 Syrian refugees, building on the Syrian Vulnerable Person scheme. Through the Local government Association, councils, including our own, are discussing positively

what might be done. However, as you probably know, an earlier administration transferred all our housing stock to social landlords, so the Council does not have housing of its own to offer. Any additional family would have to be accommodated by relegating existing families on our housing list. That may be something the community as a whole would wish us to do, but we do have to consider the position of those already here who would be directly affected. Furthermore, such a refugee family might have to be put in bed-and-breakfast in another authority. That too is not necessarily the best outcome.

‘I am particularly touched by the kind offers of those expressing willingness to take in a family, or child, themselves. The length, and cost, of a commitment to provide properly safeguarded housing, care and education to a young damaged child needs no underlining from me. Currently, this can only be funded for one year via the Aid Budget. The Government scheme, subject to identifying people with UNHCR and, one must add, security by HMG, will prioritise women and children at risk, along with people with severe medical need and victims of torture and violence. The present advice from the government to local authorities is that they do not envisage private residents taking in Syrians under the new scheme, although within civil society obviously there are many already actively engaged in helping asylum seekers and others...’
