These aims and objectives constitute the international mission statement ofthe Society. They were set by Master Moy Lin-shin and are shared by allbranches of the Society, making us a truly international Society.

These goals, combined with the accreditation procedures for our volunteerinstructors, assure that all obtain the same quality of instruction anddedicated leadership.

1. To make Taoist Tai Chi™ internal arts of health available to all

2. To promote the health-improving qualities of Taoist Tai Chi™ internal arts of health

3. To promote cultural exchange

4. To help others

by the practice of these disciplines. He vowed to make these arts available to all who wished to learn them. To do so, he developed the Taoist Tai Chi™ internal art of taijiquan, an art which brings together the many insights Master Moy learned about the workings of human physiology, internal circulation and spiritual training.

Master Moy emigrated to Canada in 1970, where he founded the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada and subsequently the International Taoist Tai Chi Society. He devoted the remainder of his life to fulfilling the Society’s objectives by helping many people restore and maintain their health through practice of the internal arts that he taught. Master Moy was careful to point out that these teachings were more than just a set of movements; they encompassed practical wisdom for living, drawing upon the richness of Chinese culture and the Taoist tradition.

Aims and Objectives

Master Moy Lin-shin (1931-1998), the Founder of the International Taoist Tai Chi Society, was heir to the practices of the traditional Chinese internal arts. His teachings combine an extensive knowledge of the Taoist classics with training he received from respected teachers in China and Hong Kong.

As a youth, Master Moy was afflicted with serious health problems. He recovered his health through his study of Tai Chi (taijiquan), Lok Hup Ba Fa (liuhebafa), Taoist meditation and other traditional internal arts. Master Moy understood the great potential to improve health and alleviate suffering

Our Founder

We are dedicated to bringing these arts and methods to every community,so that their many benefits are available to all who wish to experience them.

Practiced diligently, these arts and methods cultivate both body and mind torestore and maintain good health. Our efforts are directed at making thesebenefits better known and understood, in order to promote physical, mental, and spiritual well-being in the community.

Through Taoist Tai Chi™ internal arts of health, and through other activities,we endeavour to make the richness of Chinese culture more accessible, andthereby promote greater understanding and respect among people.

The foundation of Taoist Tai Chi Society™ internal arts of health is compassion. Our underlying charitable orientation is in keeping with the Taoist values of selflessness and service to others. Our inspiration is the example set by our founder, Master Moy Lin-shin, who dedicated his life to helping others without seeking personal gain. For this reason, all our instructors are volunteers, and all our branches operate on a non-profit basis. We also perform otherservices within the community, and assist other charities whenever possible.

Taoist training methods. The principal teachings of these three schools, unified in the Tao, are the treasure of Chinese culture.

In the early 20th century these teachings were made available for the first time outside of the Monasteries where they had remained for centuries. Master Moy Lin-shin and Mr. Mui Ming To founded Fung Loy Kok with a vision of making these methods available and helping to alleviate suffering throughout the world.

In 1970, Master Moy Lin-shin immigrated to Canada, where he founded the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada and then, in 1981, opened a first Fung Loy Kok high shrine at the Society's Bathurst Street location in Toronto.

In the fall of 1997, construction was completed of the Quiet Cultivation Centre at our International Centre in Orangeville, Ontario, which is owned by the Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism. The Institute jointly administers all Centre programs, as well as the Centre itself, in conjunction with the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada and the International Taoist Tai Chi Society.

Fung Loy Kok was co-founded by Master Moy Lin-shin and Mr. Mui Ming To in Tsuen Wan, Hong Kong in 1968. The temple's teachings are deeply rooted in the ancient spiritual traditions and culture of China, observing the unified teachings of the three religions of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism.

Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism follows the teachings of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism. Its practices are based on Confucian propriety, Buddhist scriptures, and

The taijiquan that we practice in the Society is the jewel of the internal arts and methods transmitted by Master Moy. Taijiquan is usually knownas a “soft style” martial art or as a low impact exercise. Yet, in Master Moy’s hands, it became a very special and effective form of health training, one that can work on the physical, mental and spiritual dimensions of our being.

The International Taoist Tai Chi Society offers trainingin the internal arts and methods developed by our founder, Master Moy Lin-shin, for the purpose of restoring and maintaining holistic health.

We offer training in the following internal arts, all of which are deeply rooted in spiritual tradition of Taoism: • Tai Chi Chuan (taijiquan) • Lok Hup Ba Fa (liuhebafa) • Tai Chi Sword and Sabre • Hsing I (xingyi) • In conjunction with our sister organization, the Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism, we also offer training in chi kung (qigong), meditation, ceremonies, chanting and the study of Taoist texts.

President TTCS - PAGE 4

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada, I extend congratulations to all who are participating in our Victoria Branch location’s 35th Anniversary celebrations, held in conjunction with the international celebrations of the 40th Anniversary of the International Taoist Tai Chi Society.

I especially wish to extend a warm welcome to all our invitedguests, the public, and members of the Society to this very special event.

Taoist Tai ChiTM internal arts of health is an ancient Chinese form of physical movement combining exercise and the positive personal development of inner self. Practicing this art can result in significant health improvements and an improved sense of well-being.

This wonderful wellness art was brought to Canada from Chinain 1970 by a Taoist monk named Master Moy Lin-shin. Now, in 2010, the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada is a non-profit, charitable organization which has over 15,000 members. All teaching is carried out by volunteers, with the common goal of helping others. A very active and growing number of members reside in the Victoria, British Columbia area.

With this celebration, we wish to make Taoist Tai ChiTM internal arts of health better known to the general public. We believe these arts provide a tremendous opportunity for people to take charge of their own health maintenance and improvement. As a consequence, this reduces burdens on our health care systems and enhances community spirit and quality of life.

I extend best wishes to all for a wonderful day.

Yours sincerely,

D. L. (Dave) Frame

Congratulations to the members of the Victoria Branch on the celebration of the 35th Anniversary of the Taoist Tai Chi Societyin Victoria, British Columbia. It is wonderful that you have the opportunity to celebrate this anniversary in conjunction withthe world-wide celebrations of the 40th Anniversary of the Taoist Tai Chi Society. It was under the guidance of the founder of the Taoist Tai Chi Society, Master Moy Lin Shin, that Victoriahas also enjoyed the benefits of the presence of Fung Loy Kok in the Victoria Branch.

The Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism is a sister organization to the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada. Its mission is to alleviate suffering through community service, rituals and ceremonies as well as advancing the cultivation of body and mind. Fung Loy Kokalso provides opportunities to practice chanting and meditation as taught by Master Moy.

The Fung Loy Kok Temple practices the teachings of Lao Tzu, Buddha and Confucius. The traditions that grew from those teaching are Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. These are considered by Fung Loy Kok to be complementary paths to the same spiritual goal.

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Fung Loy Kok, I wish youall a wonderful day of community and celebrations. May these celebrations provide an opportunity for the wider community to become more aware of the benefits that our organizations have to offer.

My only regret is that I cannot be there with you. However, we will all be with you in our hearts.

All the best,

Victoria Brief History (part 1) - PAGE 6

When Master Moy began teaching tai chi classes in Toronto on his arrival to Canada in 1970, he encouraged his young students who moved to other parts of the world, to teach classes and form Taoist Tai Chi clubs. In 1975 one of his first students moved to Victoria and established what was then known as the Victoria Tai Chi Association. We were in several humble locations before we found a small space above a second-hand record store on Government near Johnson. We shared the space with the Pacific Opera Society. Classes were informal. Instructors and students came and went. Thanks to visiting instructors and communications from our main branch in Toronto, we maintained a connection to Master Moy and continued to practice and teach Taoist Tai Chi.

In 1979 two of Master Moy’s students arrived from Toronto to study at the University of Victoria. Their energy and understanding of Master Moy’s vision helped the club to grow rapidly over the next few years. We trained instructors, designed posters and brochures, offered regularly scheduled classes and organized a board of directors. In 1982, we moved to a quieter neighbourhood in a larger upstairs space in a very old building (now gone) on Vancouver Street at View. This club will be remembered for the youthful enthusiasm and high spirits of the members and wonderful workshops with Master Moy. Our memories also include tai chi on hot summer evenings with no air because there were no windows, only skylights.

In 1983, Master Moy encouraged us to establish a seniors’ division. At its formal opening, the ribbon cut by Victoria’s mayor, our senior membership went from 9 to over 80 overnight. In 1984, Mr. Moy sent an instructor to begin our training in Lok Hup, Sword, Sabre and Hsing I. As the quality of our instruction improved and our membership grew, we rented another room known as the Annex in the same building and started making plans to move to a larger more central location.

In 1985, we moved to a ground floor location at the Times Colonist Building on Douglas Street. Master Moy continued to visit us twice a year. With his encouragement and patient teaching we were able to continue to grow while maintaining a friendly, welcoming club spirit. Of course this meant lots of dinners out together and using our tiny inadequate kitchen to make meals. We hired a full-time administrator and even briefly supported a second location in Oak Bay. In the years that followed we grew to over 500 members with Health Recovery classes, satellite locations in Sooke, Saanich Peninsula, Colwood, Salt Spring Island and Parksville as well as many classes at Recreation and Community Centres.

vowed to make these arts available

In addition to tai chi, Master Moy offered instruction in other Taoist Arts for those who were interested, through a sister organization, the Fung Loy Kok Institute of Taoism. Since 1990 our club has housed a Guan Yin shrine, connecting us to the Taoist roots of our tradition.

Through the 1990s, as the Taoist Tai Chi Society matured, we formalized the training and accreditation of instructors and the Victoria Tai Chi Association became legally named a branch of the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Canada.

For several years Master Moy had been encouraging us to look for a building to buy and in 1998 the right combination of skills and opportunity arose. Sadly, Master Moy died before he could see this project realized. With the hard work of a dedicated team of volunteers we purchased and renovated the building we have now. Members helped at every stage of construction and installation. The result was a wonderful practice space and a complete Chinese kitchen for our meals together and special events.

Since the year of our Grand Opening in 2000 we have continued to make improvements at Catherine Street including the development of a beautiful garden, entered by a lovely Moon Gate. An ambitious program of workshops, intensives and celebrations make each season exciting. Our yearly celebration of Taoist Tai Chi International Awareness Day has for the last two years included a vegetarian “Jai”Lunch with the general public as our guests.

Because of the efforts of about 50 qualified, volunteer instructors, the Victoria Branch can now provide many different times and locations for members to attend beginner and continuing classes. At the Victoria Centre alone, 18 beginner courses are offered each year and 10 continuing class opportunities are offered each week. The Sooke, Saanich Peninsula, Salt Spring Island and Pender Island satellite locations have become well-established and continue to grow and Parksville has become its own thriving branch.

In recent years we have reached out to the broader community by holding introductory events for health professionals and expanding Health Recovery classes. In addition, our Catherine Street buildinghas been designated as an Emergency Response Centre and each year we raise funds for a particular local charity.

By working together on all these projects, the Victoria Branch continues to evolve in the spirit of harmony and cooperation inspired by Master Moy.
