From theInterim Rector’s Perch

LAST WEEK I attended a Clergy Day on the subjectof anxiety (one of the best-attended clergy daysthey have ever held!) And it was on Election Day.No anxiety on our minds, or course.

Our Presenter was David Zahl, author of anew book entitled, Seculosity: How Career, Par-enting, Technology, Food, Politics, and RomanceBecame Our New Religion and What to DoAbout It. He projected the above picture of Dis-ney character Cruella De Vil on the screen. It bore this caption: “Me trying toexcel in my career, maintain a social life, drink enough water, exercise, texteveryone back, stay sane, survive and be happy.”

I suspect many of you can identify with this image as well as I can. I don’thave to lecture you on the ferocious pace of our lives these days or the highlevel of expectation we place on ourselves. It is no wonder that anxietyabounds.

Enter: Advent. Just in the Nick of time (pun intended) our liturgical cal-endar brings us into a season of “downtime.” Downtime? Certainly not in theculture surrounding us. But that is the point. We need downtime, God knows!

Every liturgical moment is an opportunity to experience the hint of a dif-ferent rhythm of life than our usual breakneck pace. In liturgy we experiencesilence—pauses—music—and receiving (rather than achieving). If we werebeing truthful, we would have to acknowledge that it is not only our childrenwho get antsy during worship. All of us have felt that uneasiness when we haveto wait for the Lector to walk to the front to read, when Mike gives us a littleextra silence between a reading and the next hymn, or when the time betweenthe return to our seats after receiving communion and the beginning of thePostcommunion Prayer seems a bit too long.

We have grown so accustomed to background noise that silence has be-come to signal that something has gone wrong. Remember how shocking thesilence was when air traffic was halted in the days after 9/11? Suddenly wewere aware of the sounds of nature which jet engines usually mask. And whatabout power outages? Rather than enduring silence, we all rush to fire up our

NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2018 / TRINITY TRUMPET 5

noisy generators. Silence has become a negatively charged space to us. I wasreminded the other day of a famous piece by composer John Cage. The pieceis called 4’13’’ (Four Minutes and Thirty-three Seconds.) In it a pianist comesonstage, sits down and closes the cover over the keyboard, takes out a stop-watch, and starts, stops, and restarts it until the final stop at 4’33’. Silence.During a post-concert discussion at the work’s premiere in a rural venue inNew York, Cage biographer David Revill notes, one local artist stood up andsuggested, "Good people of Woodstock, let's drive these people out of town."We just hate silence.

And yet, we so need silence. We need that counter-cultural rhythm of lifewhich is a glimpse of the realm of God: silence—pause—music—receiving: re-peat. On a really good day we can take with us some of the final blessing: thePeace of God which passes all understanding.

Advent is a particular time of year for us to claim some “downtime” withGod. When our musicians met to plan our Advent liturgies, we decided to dialthings back a notch. We will try to incorporate more silence and pauses which, after all, in music are known as “rests”. We will try to allow ourselves to rest inthe Lord with more meditative offerings. We will try to slow ourselves down abit so that we can step off the merry-go-round into God’s time. Did you evercontemplate the possibility that God’s time might be moving more slowlythan ours?

The author of the Second Letter of Peter refers back to Psalm 90 whenhe says: “But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord oneday is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day.” And thenhe continues: “The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think ofslowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to cometo repentance.”

I imagine this means God is so aware of what is happening every momentat every place, that only God lives time to its fullest potential. And if Godseems slow to us, we should rejoice, for we have far to go and we need some“extra” time. For us, the road that leads to Bethlehem will be a four-week jour-ney. Those four weeks of Advent will contain a thousand years of God’s loveand mercy and Grace. Will we notice it? Will we hear God in the silence?Or will we fly past, hearing only the loud, shrieking merry-go-round as we strivefor that elusive brass ring?

Special Music for Christmas Eve

This year we will have a half hour of special music before theChristmas Eve service, but it will not be a brass quintet, it will be

a chance to feature the talent of our own congregation. We are call-ing on all instrumentalists and vocalists who wish to share their talentto come forward and be a part of a joyous night of celebration.

Has someone in your family been taking music lessons but doesn’t have a place to share their talent? Do you or your family have a favorite

Christmas carol you would like to sing? Do you know someone in the community whomight like to offer a musical gift? I have spoken with many people who are very musi-cal, but their skills might not fit in with Choir or Praise Band. This is a chance to be apart of something special! Even if you are not sure if your talents fit, please let meknow; we might be able to pair up musicians. Even if you can only play a few chords onguitar or piano, you still might be able to accompany a soloist. Even if you can onlyplay a simple melody on saxophone or cello, it might pair well with a certain vocalist.

We are looking for musicians of all ages! I would love to work with anyone and ambitious, or show beauty through simplicity. Please email me to let me know ifyou or a family member can bring something special to the Christmas Eve service this year: [email protected]
