From the principal Hi everyone - TCS gets better and better!

Congratulations to Kenny Thurbon, our very own Trangie Artist Congratulations from all of us at TCS, we are very proud of your wonderful work. This demonstrates how talent, combined with dedication and hard work is such a powerful combination. (Photo from the Narromine News)

Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Van Staden

This year our holidays had a wonderful beginning as we travelled to Branxton to witness the marriage of Miss Aimee Wall to her fiancee JF Van Staden. The wedding took place in a beautiful, historic church in Branxton filled with Aimee and JF’s friends and family followed by a reception in a lovely rural setting.

The weather was lovely, the singing in the church beautiful and the speeches at the reception hilarious. The day was perfect and everyone at TCS wishes Aimee and JF a long and happy life together.

THANKYOU On Thursday 11th April Trangie Lions Club welcomed our District Governor and his wife, Gavan and Jenny Ellis. It is always interesting to speak to members of other clubs and hear what contribution they are making to their own communities.

Mrs Ellis, an ex-teacher and I were happy to ‘talk shop’ as teachers always seem to do and it appeared, coincidentally that she used to teach my daughter-in-law in Bathurst before she retired.

Mrs Ellis, when she was teaching, was a school librarian with a belief that she and I shared, in the importance of children having access to books. She is now involved in a project called 123READ2ME which provides books to children free of charge. Mrs Bradbury and her husband called by in Trangie a week later and dropped off boxes containing around 100 books catering for primary children from K-6 both fiction and non-fiction. We would like to extend a BIG Trangie Central School THANKYOU to the Lions Club for this thoughtful and wonderful gift.

From the principal School Bell Reunion Last term we enjoyed a wonderful School Bell Reunion weekend when Trangie and our school welcomed back around 60 former TCS students. The reunion was organised by Colin Rule, ably assisted I know by his wife and also Andrew and Deb Cayzer. A great deal of effort went into tracking down and contacting these old school friends and it was a job well done to see how much pleasure everyone got out of catching up with old friends and sharing old memories. Andy and I were honoured to be invited to the dinner in the evening and we were able to gauge very quickly who the naughty students were in their day. Mentioning no names of course! It also gave us great pleasure in giving a guided tour of the school so that everyone could see how much it has changed. I know that some of our local residents were very surprised at how excellent our facilities are and I did hear a comment ‘Why would you send your child anywhere else when there is so much here’. Why indeed!

We also received a big compliment on our newsletter after some visitors had researched our school before they came back and one person said to me that he had spent a fortune on his children’s education but that their school’s newsletter was not a patch on ours. This is entirely down to Sharyn Brown’s expertise and the way that others emulate what we do is evidence enough of the quality of her work, so well done!

Massive THANKYOU to everyone at the reunion and particularly to Andrew Cayzer for the generous donation of $1085 which was the left over funds from the evening meal. The visitors had achieved a great deal of success in their lives and they attributed that to the start they got from attending Trangie Central School. I announced therefore that their very generous donation would be used to contribute to our Tertiary Encouragement Prize which is designed to ensure that financial hardship will not prevent able students from following a pathway into tertiary education.

If anyone would like to help us in this endeavour we would be very grateful. We have tax deductible status and you can donate using this link: https://www.schoolsplus.org.au/rewarding-commitment-learning-across-years-11-12/

School Uniform Please remember that all students should have a formal uniform as well as the sports uniform. This is required for any formal occasion, any performance and for those presenting in assembly. In all workplaces there is a standard of dress expected and casual dress is not applicable on many occasions. We intend to bring in a system where a discount will be given on the purchase of a new skirt when one is returned in good condition or alternatively a good quality second hand skirt will be sold at a much reduced cost. Boys need grey trousers as opposed to the blue shorts. The details of this will follow.

Thumbs Up

Thumbs up these holidays definitely goes to all the businesses who did such a great job of improving our school and getting it all finished before the students came back for Term 2. Thanks to Ken Hilder and his team for a great shade structure now attached to our Hospitality and Textile room, to Graham McAnally for our lovely new path and cement area for the bus shelter and to the Gillespies for the huge improvement to

our side entrance with a shelter to protect all the bus students in either heat or hopefully rain. Also thanks to Mark Gleeson for building a wall to house our jazzy new multi-coloured senior lockers and upgrading the Science and Art storerooms and to Western Tarps Dubbo for replacing the shade over the handball court in secondary.

We count ourselves very fortunate in Trangie that we have craftsmen of such calibre who always do such a high quality job. At TCS it is our policy to support local business when they are available and I can honestly say that we could not do better anywhere else.

Finally …….. My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us. Facebook is for cowards – so please tell us to our face!

All the best,

Anne Holden

SECONDARY Head Teachers’ Report

‘The Nest’ is Up and Running! Wellbeing is at the front of everything we do at Trangie Central School. We are proud to announce that we are now servicing our students from The Nest (the old Principal’s residence). For the past 12 months, we have worked hard to establish the building and find services that cater to the needs of our students and their families. In Term One we completed an online survey through our school Face Book page that saw 101 responses. The following five top issues were listed as affecting our students and their families’ wellbeing.

1. Smoking 2. Mental Illness 3. Bullying 4. Alcohol Use 5. Drug Use

We would like to thank everyone for having a say as this allows us to target the services needed for what you believe are the major issues. In response to this the Wellbeing Team at Trangie Central School have engaged with The Royal Flying Doctors who have committed to supplying an Alcohol and Other Dugs Clinical Support Worker who will sit in ‘The Nest’ every Wednesday during the school term from 10am-3pm. This outreach program can provide 1:1 face-to-face counselling, Youth drop in Support, and group sessions on early intervention. We are also lucky enough to have Ursula Ryan who will be implementing the “Positive Lifestyle Program” which looks at the following issues with our Stage 6 students.

Self-awareness

Anger

Depression and loneliness

Stress

Grief and Loss

Assertiveness

Self Esteem

Future Directions

Over the course of the term, we will keep students and families up to date with the progression of The Nest and what services will be available and when. We are working hard to bring in more outreach services, which are also offered to our students’ families who attend Trangie Central School. If you wish to make an appointment please contact our front office.

SECONDARY Literacy at TCS

This week we’re kicking off a renewed focus on literacy in the secondary school. All teachers of all subjects are working together to boost our students’ literacy skills and understanding in order to increase achievement across the board. We know that strong literacy skills assist everyone in communicating clearly, deepening their understanding of what they read, and improving engagement in the world around them. This is important for us all, and we all want our young people to be able to participate in their community, the workforce, and their lives as fully as possible.

As such, we’re kicking off a number of initiatives and strategies across the school to work on this, and we hope you will support them at home as well, by talking with your child/ren about what’s happening in literacy at school. With your support, we will see our students’ confidence and achievement in reading and writing skyrocket.

Fortnight Focus Each fortnight we will be paying particular attention to one small aspect of literacy, beginning with accurate and consistent use of punctuation. This fortnight we are starting at the very beginning: sentence punctuation. We expect every student to begin every sentence (in every subject!) with a capital letter, and to end them with a full stop or, if appropriate, an exclamation mark or question mark.

We will then build from there, continuing to expect that same accuracy with sentence punctuation while adding in another element of accurate writing. From little things, big things grow!

Weekly Competition Greek and Latin words (or roots) form the basis of a staggering proportion of English words, most of the time without us noticing it. This term, we will have a new Greek root each week for students to think of as many English words as they can that contain that root, and to use at least one of them in a complete sentence. We will have a random draw at each Monday assembly for a small prize. Competition entry forms can be collected from and returned to the Library.

This week we’re looking at anti, the Greek term for ‘against’ or ‘opposite’. I’m sure our students can think of many things that they are opposed to! They could potentially get quite creative with this one… The goal for this is not to use a dictionary to come up with the most words, but to think of our own language, and chat to family and friends to try and think of more, and a creative way to put them in a sentence.

Assistant Principals’ Report

Fantastic End to the Term! We celebrated the end to a lovely first term with a couple of great events. The first was the Easter Hat Parade organised by Miss Druce. The children all made their own Easter hats in class time. They used materials like cardboard, sticky tape, paint, cotton wool and pipe cleaners to create some really sensational hats. The fact that they were all so unique added much interest to the parade. Thank you to the many families who were able to come along and share in this event with their children.

On the very last Friday afternoon of term the students participated in a RAM Rewards Day. This is a chance to celebrate all of the positive behaviour and attitudes demonstrated by our students throughout the term. Students receive RAMS tickets for displaying behaviours that we like at school and in society. Examples include using polite manners, sharing, helping others, taking care of our things and being organised.

The Year 4/5 class organised a tabloid sports event for the Primary school. The children worked in pairs to think up a tabloid event. They gathered the equipment needed, made signs and rules for their event and then ran the event on the afternoon. The children displayed some excellent leadership qualities and were proud of how their events ran. Also, a big thank you to the Year 6 students who were teamed up with their Kinder buddies and helped them in the events. It certainly seemed like a fun way to end the term together.

Academic Competitions This term we have a few academic competitions available for our Years 3-6 students. All children are encouraged to be involved. Extra practice at home will also enhance your child’s ability to succeed. It’s the same with anything….if you want to be a strong swimmer you go to swimming training, if you want to ride in Pony Club you ride your horse each afternoon, if you want to play an instrument well you practise.

YOUR child can achieve great things with work and effort!

CWA Public speaking competition. Year 3/4 topics; Who was here 1st? / I can’t reach / It wasn’t my idea Year 5/6 topics; Don’t mention it / Dreaming / Our poor ocean * 2 minute time limit CWA Research poster project. Country - New Guinea. Due by end of term. Premier’s Spelling Bee – words available now. Competition in Term 3.

Book Donations During the school holidays, we were very fortunate to receive a donation of 100 Primary Books for our students to take home. The Governor of our Lions Club for this region dropped in to see Mrs Holden during the holidays and brought the special delivery of books. It’s part of a ‘Books for Kids’ initiative run by the Lion’s Club. The

books are a mixture of fiction and non-fiction and our students were extremely excited to have a new book to take home. Such a thoughtful gesture aimed to address the disadvantage of children who report to have no books in their homes.

Reminders
