Kindness Changes Everything

From the principal Hi everyone - TCS - Opportunities and aspiration

Continue the fight against Cyberbullying

I am sure you will all remember the very sad story of Dolly, a young girl who took her own life because of relentless cyberbullying. As a school, we have raised funds to support Dolly’s Dream, which is a foundation that promotes the spread of kindness and aims to stamp out bullying. You will see Dolly’s photo in our foyer to reflect our support.

At TCS we have a very strict mobile phone policy that attempts to reduce the opportunity for this type of anti-social behaviour. We all know that when people use social media to attack people, it is the very worst kind of bullying and we do everything that we can to protect our students from this. We try to teach them the possible risks of using social media and also what to do if they find themselves targets of the cowardly people who attack from a distance. We also have strong wellbeing programs that deliver a positive message about how to deal with problems, offering strategies that develop resilience and a capacity to handle difficult situations.

We will act immediately if we receive evidence of such harassment and go to the Police, as we have done in the past. Please assist us to protect your child by monitoring their social media use and alerting us to any inappropriate behaviour immediately.

Congratulations on Whudagaragarra Recognition Congratulations to Jessica Skinner for winning a prestigious Whudagaragarra Award at last week’s awards ceremony in Dubbo. This award recognises the achievements of Aboriginal students, teachers and community members for their contribution to Aboriginal Education in the Western Region.

Jessica was recognised for her outstanding contribution to our school, our town and women’s sport. Jessica’s commitment and passion to her school and her town, working tirelessly to improve the wellbeing of all our students, has been a defining factor in the high self-esteem and level of aspiration that our students possess – Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal alike. Our Aboriginal students stand tall and are proud of who they are, with Jessica as a role model that all want to emulate.

Trangie Lions Club in Action - Swimming Season Tickets Trangie Lions is committed to providing service to our community. We are only a small club, with limited membership but we try to contribute for the benefit of our town and its people. The Lions Bus is frequently used around the district and it benefits both our school and the wider community.

On Saturday 16th November we will hold our first Lego Challenge Day and if this is successful, it may not be the last. This will be a pilot effort and we will learn as we go along. We have lots of prizes, so it should be a fun day. As the pieces of Lego are small, there is an age limit of 6 years and over. I would like to thank TCS’s long suffering staff who put their hand up for everything whenever and wherever they are needed and who have volunteered to be there on the day. Anyone else willing to help would be welcomed.

Once again, the Lions Club of Trangie, with support provided by the wider Lions Community, has elected to provide drought support to our whole community by funding Swimming Pool Season Tickets for Trangie families. We felt that this would enable all Trangie children to enjoy our pool during the heat of summer without their families having to outlay the considerable cost of pool entry. This will also support the Narromine Shire by providing a greater pool income than they might otherwise have enjoyed. The season tickets this year will allow entry into both the Trangie AND Narromine Pools, which is a huge bonus.

Please come along and support our club if you have a little spare time and a willingness to contribute to our community. Membership does not mean a great commitment of time but instead we like to contribute with ‘big ticket items’ that make the biggest impact but manageable with a small membership. Why not come along? Contact me at school if you are interested.

Parent Survey Our school would like to thank Mrs Lea McKinnon for her efforts in conducting the phone survey of our families last week. We are very keen at TCS to find out what we do well and also what needs doing better so that we can continue to improve. We will evaluate these results and give you all feedback. The full set of responses will be presented at our next P&C meeting, so come along and have your say.

Finally …….. My door is and always has been open – whether you are happy, sad or mad. I need to know if we are not doing something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions. I do teach, so if you need to talk to me for any reason, just call the office and arrange a time that I am not on class or in a meeting. Also, don’t forget our suggestion box at each side of the school.

Everything we do, every single day is for YOUR children. If we can do it better, tell us. Facebook is definitely for cowards – so please tell us to our face!

Also, give your child the most valuable gift in the world – a good education – so send them EVERY day. We have a great school and it is such good value for very little money.

SECONDARY Head Teacher’s Report We have HSC Hospitality students out on Work Placement in Narromine this week. Stacey is at Soul Food and Jessica is at the Fruit and Veg shop. If you are in Narromine, be sure to pop in, say hi and support our students.

HSC exams are done and dusted, and we are thrilled to hear reports that many of our students have been offered entry to university. Congratulations to everyone!

Most of our Secondary Yearly Examinations are done now, too. And everyone survived! Please make sure to reflect on your results and identify the skills you may need to improve upon, particularly as Year 10 moves into Year 11 next year. Remember, your teachers are here to help you, but the onus is on you.

Good luck to all our School Spectacular students in Choir and Dance next week. Looking forward to seeing the performances!

I would like to take this opportunity to let our coastal friends and family know that the Trangie community has been watching with concern as these terrible bushfires rage around the state. Stay safe!

Staff Smile of the Week (Week 4)

SECONDARY

Friday 8th November commenced with a bright and early start of 6.30am for our super netballers as we made our way to Orange to compete against teams from all over the Central West.

On the day, the girls versed Blayney, Delroy and Bathurst in Pool B, coming away with a victory against Blayney and two very close games (but unfortunately not victorious) against Delroy and Bathurst. Having finished 3rd in the pool, the girls then played off against Gulgong and Lithgow, coming away with wins in both games by a significant margin.

All of the TCS girls played fabulously and worked positively as a team to take on some teams with very strong representative netballers on their side.

Special mention to the player of the day, Stacey Stoneman, who was even acknowledged by other sides for her attitude and sportsmanship on the court - well done!

A big thanks to Leanne Everett and her entourage who came all the way to support the girls all day and brought along Emma-Jean who contributed to the girls making it away to Orange, but unfortunately couldn't play on the day. It was fantastic to have that support on the sideline!

Finally a big thank you to Kira-Lyn Edwards who volunteered to umpire all of our games throughout the day.

Bring on the 2020 competition!

Assistant Principals’ Report

World Kindness Day and Remembrance Day Many people wrongly assume that values and ethics are only taught in religious schools. This of course is a falsely held belief. There are millions of people across the world who don’t rely on religion to guide their thoughts and actions; who make decisions based on their own moral compass. All Public schools have ethics and critical thinking embedded in the curriculum outcomes.

Across our school, day after day we model and encourage making wise choices. Choices that keep ourselves safe, choices that look after others and choices that are for the greater good. The students learn how to make wise decisions and how to consider the needs of others. In class we often pose questions that have a moral dilemma and look at possible solutions. We have also been fortunate to have the P&C invest funds in the “Ripples Kindness Program’ that further develops our Personal Health and Development (PDHPE) curriculum.

Yesterday, the students honoured World Kindness Day, “the purpose of which is to look beyond ourselves, beyond the boundaries of our country, beyond our culture, our race, our religion; and realise we are citizens of the world. As world citizens we have a commonality, and must realise that if progress is to be made in human relations and endeavours, if we are to achieve the goal of peaceful coexistence, we must focus on what we have in common. When we find likenesses we begin to experience empathy, and in such a state we can fully relate to that person or those people. When we become friends with someone from a different culture we discover that despite some differences, there are many similarities.”

Students have been learning to ask themselves on a regular basis, "Is what I am involved in at this moment promoting joining or separation?" We seek ways to perform little acts of kindness, helping to break down the walls that separate races, religions and cultures. We also remembered those brave men and women who valiantly fought and served in War and wished for Peace in the future. Music Count Us In On Thursday 7th of November, thousands of school children from all over Australia joined together in the biggest simultaneous sing-along in the country as part of Music: Count Us In’s Celebration Day! This year the Live streaming came from Surfer’s Paradise and our students joined over 745,000 students from more than 3,400 schools all around Australia singing the same song, on the same day, at the same time – the annual Program Song. It is a song written by students, for students. The 2019 Program Song was called ‘We Are.’

Primary students will sing this song together again on our

upcoming Presentation Day.

Improve your child’s Creative Writing in 10 minutes per day! The ability to write well is vitally important to your child's success in life. Writing well can help your child succeed academically and professionally. Moreover, creative writing can be an important therapeutic outlet for your child to imagine new worlds and to express his or her feelings. Help your child improve their creative writing skills by supporting creativity, by playing word games, and sparking their imagination with clever writing prompts.

Play stenographer. If your child is too young to write and spell out long stories, ask your child to come up with stories out loud. Write down your child's thoughts and read them back to your child. You can do this with very young children to help them learn to connect spoken and written words or with older children to help them focus.

Write and read along with your child. Be a model reader and writer for your child. Demonstrate to them that reading and writing are valuable and fun activities. The more your child sees you reading and writing, the more likely they will be to continue the practice on their own.

Correspond with friends and family often. Sometimes the most valuable writing activities are those that build and maintain important personal connections. Develop email or letter-writing correspondence with friends and family members and ask your child to assist you. If your child is excited to receive and send letters, your child might apply this excitement to other writing activities.

New Resources Our School Library is starting to order in books that may be helpful to parents. These books will cover topics such as healthy eating, family routines, child psychology and parenting. We aim to have handy resources for any parent wanting to find good information. This week we have received two books about menstruation. These might be handy for parents of daughters. If you wish to borrow them or would like to request a book, please contact our Librarian, Mrs Anderson.
