He competed in the 11 Year 200m event at the State Athletics Carnival. Elija qualified for this event after achieving fantastic results at our local Zone Athletic Carnival. Unfortunately, he missed out on a place on the State team to attend the National Carnival in Adelaide by the tiniest margin of 0.12 of a second. His overall result was: 1st in heat; 3rd overall; qualified for semi final - 27.68 seconds 4th in semi final; 6th overall; qualified for final 27.39 seconds 4th in final 27.27 seconds. Elija's time improved in every race and he made our school very proud. CLASS OF THE WEEK—3/4R We are having a very busy Term 4 at Toukley Public School. The children from Year 3 had their walking excursion to The Rocks. Congratulations on wonderful behaviour and representing the school so well. Last Friday was Grandparents Day at Toukley Neighbourhood Centre. Our Year 6 students joined their Grandparents for a wonderful day celebrating the importance of Grandparents. Thank you Toukley Neighbourhood Centre for organising this day. Still on Grandparents Day our wonderful Choir with Mr Norman performed at Wyong Shire Civic Centre for Wyong Council’s ‘Celebration of Grandparents’. Tomorrow our Year 6 students and family members have the opportunity to experience a day at Newcastle University for “Discover Uni Day” This is an exceptional program for students and families to learn all about University and what is available for students in the future. The results of the Newcastle Permanent Primary Mathematics Competition have been received and we are thrilled with the results our students have achieved. Congratulations to Joel from 5/6W who came 3rd in the Hunter Region. A great achievement! As well, our students received 14 Distinctions and 49 Merit Awards. An outstanding result for our Year 4 to Year 6 students. Last week was a very challenging week with bush fires near us and further afield. We would like to thank everyone for their understanding and support with the changes to routines and plans that resulted from the fires. Narelle Armour—Principal

A STEP BACK IN TIME During Week 3 of Term 4, Year 3 students took a step back in time when they travelled by coach to Sydney to participate in a Walking Tour of The Rocks area. This excursion was organised to compliment the unit of learning studied in class on "British Colonisation". Students were dressed like convicts, soldiers and even Captain Arthur Phillips; even the teachers were dressed in costumes. We were all given cards which identified who we were. During the walk, the students would tell us about the lives of their character and why they had been sent or travelled to Australia. The children thoroughly enjoyed the walk during which they learnt about the history of The Rocks area, and the changes Sydney has been through since the time of the first fleet. A fantastic day was had by all who attended and the children were very well behaved and were exceptional ambassadors for Toukley Public School. Photos from this excursion can be viewed on the gallery section of the school webpage.

SCHOOL BANKING If you have been saving this year with School Banking and collecting your silver Dollarmites tokens, then now is the time to redeem them for a reward before you miss out. You need to use your tokens before the end of Term 4 as you will not be able to use them next year. Once you have chosen the reward item you would like to receive, complete the coupon on your rewards card and take it, along with your 10 tokens per reward, to school with your next School Banking deposit. The Dollarmites moneyboxes will no longer be available from next year so collect them now.

CHANGE OF DETAILS Keeping the school up to date with address and phone details is very important. As the end of year presentation is coming up, your child may be receiving an award, so please make sure that you have advised the school if your address has changed. “Change of Details” forms can be obtained from the office.

JARGON EXPLAINED If your child’s teacher mentions G & T in the COLA, she’s actually talking about gifted and talented classes being held in the Covered Outdoor Learning Area. More school jargon is explained at: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/homework-and-study/homework-tips/school-jargon-busters.

2013 RELAY FOR LIFE 19 of our students, known as "Team Toukley", recently participated in the 2013 Relay for Life at Mingara. After setting up a rainbow themed camp site, the entire team walked the first lap together. The team then took turns in walking the track in half hour lots according to a pre determined walking roster. Every single student waited eagerly to take their turn in walking the track. Team Toukley's fund raising activities for the event included face painting, nail painting and spraying hair with different colours. All up, Team Toukley raised in excess of $3,000 for the Cancer Council. Team Toukley kept the walking all throughout the night. The students really joined the spirit of the occasion. This was a wonderful experience for all concerned - children, parents, Mr Gillett, Miss Weeks and Ms Wilson. A big thank you must go to local businesses who provided the team with bread and meat for them to eat and maintain the stamina for the event. Parent, Kristie Wagstaff, has written this recount of the occasion which is in the Relay for Life article on the school webpage. It is well worth the read.
