From the principal Hi everyone ndash Trangie Central School Cares for our Community as always

Thank Goodness They are Back Welcome back to all of the students who have returned to school this week We have a phased return to school for everyone but many have opted to attend every day either because their families work or because they were finding that working at home just did not suit them It has been very strange at school without students and it was lovely to see ourselves back in business even partially

Throughout this whole time our staff have worked very hard to cater for student learning using on-line platforms that they were sometimes not too familiar with I know that I am certainly more adept at using Google Classroom than I was before and even managed to make video clips Eddie Woo style (ish) to explain how to calculate percentages to Year 8s I have decided though that the cinema may not necessarily be my next career move

No challenge has been too great or hurdle too insurmountable for the best staff ever In Term 1 we had a term of being a construction site with a COLA and massive ramps being built and just when the fences had been removed COVID hit us We were then told that we had to completely change how we taught and students were told that they had to completely change how they learned ndash and all in the space of weeks or even days It is a testimony to everyonersquos adaptability flexibility and the relationship that exists between teachers and students that we have survived so far and have gained a whole new appreciation for each other and the part that school plays in our lives and in the health of the economy as a whole

This term there have been some students at school and some students at home some of the time We have rolled with the punches and Week 3 has been welcomed as the start of the return We now though have reverse cycle air-conditioning being installed in all our learning spaces under a massive lsquoCooler Classroomrsquo program This involves air-conditioning engineers carpenters bricklayers and electricians being in different parts of the school every day for 12 weeks This will be so much more effective than the evaporative system that we have at present so it will be worth the disruption I would like to thank the contractors though for being so amazingly considerate of the needs of a functioning school and except for a few room changes we have not known they are here

We also have painting happening around the school inside classrooms and also the outside of the canteen This will match the colour of the other demountables so we are going to look much smarter than before The bird murals will be replaced and it will enhance their appearance not to be fixed to a shabby rusty wall

Enhanced Cleaning and Hygiene Practices In order to ensure the safety of both staff and students our school has been allocated by the Department of Education extra cleaning hours and we welcome Elizabeth Hutchison back to our school after her years as a student She spends time during the school day deep cleaning desks toilets staff common rooms and door handles We have also purchased a large spray unit and employed Judy Gale to spray all outdoor furniture toilets and play equipment with disinfectant in order to make sure that surfaces that have been touched by students are sanitised after each break

Each classroom also has hand sanitiser and wipes for hands and desks or laptops

Submitting Work Can I please remind all students to return the work that was sent out in Term 1 and Term 2rsquos packages I have been very impressed by the quality of work received so far but also concerned that some students have not submitted anything as yet This work will provide evidence of learning that will be included in student reports to be sent out at the end of term so all students need to ensure that work has been handed in as soon as possible

Congratulations Kiah Edwards Congratulations to Kiah Edwards We are so very proud of Kiahrsquos achievement of having her photos posted on Capturing Climate Change at the Australia Museum

I loved the photos and the thoughts that Kiah had written beneath each one When I looked at her photos it made me remember how desperate we all felt in the grip of such a terrible drought and experiencing such fierce heat How it has changed with crops going in and water in the Goan Water Hole

We endured that and then felt so good after the rain Then COVID-19 arrived Itrsquos a good job we are tough It never rains but it pours

Congratulations to Cam Broughton Congratulations to Cam for winning the prestigious Redgum Young Writerrsquos competition Cam wrote a story called lsquoSmokersquo and he will be working with an illustrator and editor who will help him get it ready to be published

Cam is a talented writer and we are very proud of him This demonstrates how our school identifies and develops the talents of our students and we congratulate Ms Murtagh on nurturing and developing Camrsquos obvious talents I will certainly ask for an autographed copy when it is published so I can brag about knowing him before he became famous

Welcome to new Staff

This term TCS welcomes several new staff We have been delighted to welcome Mrs Hailee Fidock and Mr Ewan Fidock Mrs Fidock has joined us to teach Industrial Arts filling in for Mr Wright in both metal and wood and Mr Fidock has replaced Mrs Meredith Andrews in the role of Technical Support Officer He will be at TCS for 5 days per fortnight and then will share the rest of his time with Tottenham Tullamore Peak Hill and Yeoval

We also welcome Mrs Belinda Haigh who will be our Head Teacher of Agriculture and Science as Mr Hansen has stepped up to be our Deputy Principal Mrs Haigh will be working for four days per week and we are very fortunate to retain the services of Mr Justin Quigley (of swimming chicken fame) for the other day a week Mr Quigley and Mrs Haigh are an awesome team and we feel very fortunate to have their expertise at our school

We are also very pleased to see Ms Lyn Taylor join us in the canteen We have been spoiled with such delicacies as home-made soup lasagne and spaghetti bolognaise It is lovely not to have to think about making my own lunch each day I am supporting our school and having a great lunch at the same time

Primary lsquoValuesrsquo Mural The mural project under the widows on the primary side of the school has been long in the planning We have taken time to really consider what message we wanted to give in this very prominent space We wanted our community to lsquogetrsquo what we are about and we have chosen a communication of the lsquoValuesrsquo that we live by as our theme In this way our community can see what we hold dear and what drives our teaching and our thinking

We gave Jack Randell photos and the values that the photos depicted and below is the design that he came up with After the long time that we have worked with Jack he very obviously understands us and what we are about He has got it just right

Jack is installing the art work on Tuesday 19th May all being well so come along and have a look We love it so we hope you do too Finally helliphellip My door is and always has been open ndash whether you are happy sad or mad I need to know if we are not doing something right but I also need to know that you trust our motives and our intentions I do teach so if you need to talk to me for any reason just call the office and arrange a time that I am not on class or in a meeting Also donrsquot forget our suggestion box at each side of the school

Everything we do every single day is for YOUR children If we can do it better tell us Facebook is definitely for cowards ndash so please tell us to our face

Also give your child the most valuable gift in the world ndash a good education ndash so send them EVERY day We have a great school and it is such good value for very little money

Head Teacherrsquos Report

A very warm welcome back to all our students who are attending classes on site as well as those who are joining in our online video conference sessions It has been wonderful to see everyone and I would like to thank our entire school community for their efforts in keeping us all healthy and safe In particular our cleaners and office staff are continually going above and beyond to make our school a safe place to learn and work I would like to remind students and parents of the utmost importance of staying home if you are unwell regular hand washing and following the guidelines for social distancing issued by the NSW Government and Department of Health

While NESA has given schools some flexibility in how we address our syllabuses and our modes of assessment it is essential that students are still learning and engaging in the materials being prepared by their teachers Students should come to school prepared with their books and necessary resources for each dayrsquos lessons and should be completing their activities at home when they are not here If they have any questions or concerns they should ask their teacher or Year Adviser for assistance

Finally I would like to thank our families for their ongoing support of our school and staff during the remote learning phases of the governmentrsquos response to the pandemic By encouraging your child to engage with their learning from home you are giving them a wonderful gift and are helping us to achieve our core goals of quality teaching and learning underpinned by a strong sense of wellbeing and purpose

Our school during a pandemichellip Huge thanks to our versatile and committed staff who have worked very hard to respond to the quickly changing needs of our students and community In weeks 3 and 4 of this term we are in lsquoPhase 1rsquo of the Department of Educationrsquos Managed Return to School model This means

bull K123 students are encouraged to attend school on Mondayrsquos and Wednesdayrsquos

bull 456 students are encouraged to attend school on Tuesdayrsquos and Thursdayrsquos

bull School remains open each day for students that need it bull Work is provided for children learning from home bull Sick children are sent home immediately and encouraged

not to come to school

Our School is working hard to maintain a safer school environment by

bull Employing extra cleaners who work throughout each day to disinfect common areas

bull Supervising regular hand washing bull Maintaining less than 15 students in a classroom space bull Stopping all extra-curricular events eg excursions and

sporting comps bull Minimising adult visitors to our school particularly at drop

off and pick up times

Quality learning at school or at home When times are challenging it is nice to maintain some form of regularity School has proven to be a cornerstone of a childrsquos life and maintaining positive links with learning whether at home or at school has proven quite important for our students Many students have been able to engage in online learning and stay in contact with their teachers and classmates Upper Primary students have been using Microsoft teams

The teachers are able to put up new work each day answer questions from students and students can lsquogroup chatrsquo with each other too It has been a fun change to lsquoregular schoolrsquo The younger years have been working in the lsquoSeesawrsquo platform Online learning for Primary age

students is not really comparable to learning at school with their peers and teachers present but can suffice when there is no choice Parents it may be useful to get your children well acquainted with the online platforms and using technology effectively just in case we have a resurgence in Covid 19




Online Opportunities This week Christian OrsquoNeill participated from home in an introductory online lesson for Moorambilla Christian was one of a group of students scattered all across Western NSW who met and sang with the Australian Governor Generalrsquos wife Mrs Hurley is the patron of Moorambilla is heavily involved in community initiatives has travelled and lived in many places throughout the world and as a former teacher herself she sees the value of music in a childrsquos life Mrs Hurley taught the students two songs that were a favourite of her sonrsquos when he was growing up What a lovely event for Christian to be involved in We were so fortunate to have such a keen singer representing our town




We love to read at TCS As the weather cools snuggling up with a good book becomes a very inviting idea The importance of reading to your childrsquos academic development is intrinsically linked The saying lsquoKids who read succeedrsquo is very true Exposing your child to the rich language and ideas of good books will have huge impacts on how well your child does at school

Why Reading is Important for Children Increased Communication Skills By observing interactions between the characters in the book your child starts to process those interactions mentally Your child increases communication skills by interpreting the actions and word usage between the characters within each book that they read This helps build their communication skills to voice their thoughts in future scenarios properly

Increased Intelligence With the communication skills and cognitive skills being taught by reading your child starts to have an increased level of intelligence Reading a wide range of books from a young age into adult years helps to mold your childrsquos vocabulary usage Books bring about a whole new world of words that your child will soon learn proper meanings of by merely reading their beloved books Children who read are exposed to ideas and places outside of their own experience They also learn to harness the power of the written word with fluency and aptitude

Reading Reduces Stress The act of reading a book can reduce stress for many children and adults When asked why is reading important for children the simple answer is because they can get lost inside of a book They can travel anywhere be anybody do anything when they are reading a great book Children and adults can relax when they read a book

Increased Attention Span Children have a difficult time maintaining attention only when they start to age mature and have new experiences are they better equipped to increase their attention span When your child reads a book they are secretly working to increase attention span You must pause reflect and evaluate every word you read when curled up with a book that takes a lot of focus

There you have it a few of the many reasons why reading is important for children Whether you have a child who is just learning to read or has fallen off the reading bandwagon and needs a little encouragement to get back into the reading curve these reasons should help you guide your child forward to have a love of books
