As you prepare to complete youracademic experience, muchpreparation is necessary. You wantyour journey at Tougaloo to be anadventurous success. You want toensure a smooth transition fromhigh school with no major tocollege declaring a major.Likewise, you want all of yourlearning tools to be state-of-the-art,ready for any learning adventure,opportunity and challenge.

So, for the next four weeks or 20 days,spend 1 hours per day reshaping thehabits of your mind for new, exciting,challenging and rewarding ventures.This presentation offers preparations foryour academic success at TougalooCollege. We have found several of thebest college websites and links to helpyou continue and reinforce your skillsas well as enhance your learningexperience and your academicconfidence.

Tougaloo Eaglet Experience (TEE)

When used daily, theseweb sites will stimulateskills learned in high schooland will refocus those skillstoward college needs. So,get ready for daily venturesin acquiring new mind-habits.

Before You Start/After You Finish

BEFORE you START, buy a compositionbook to write responses to your novel,record new vocabulary words, makenotes from the websites, and writeprogress notes.

AFTER you FINISH the 20-day TougalooEaglet Experience, BRING your Noveland Writing Journal to your collegereading course. We will review yourcollection of materials and you willcomplete a Tougaloo Eaglet ExperienceSurvey.

First Day

• Today, you can continue your transition to collegeacademics by selecting one of the novels from thereserve list in the library. Do not forget to recordyour readings in your composition book.

• Hurston, Zora Neale. Their Eyes Were WatchingGod.

• Gaines, Earnest. A Lesson Before Dying.• Poitier, Sidney. The Measure of a Man. San

Francisco: Harper Collins, 2000.

• Begin your 20 minutes of Sustained Silent Reading(SSR) immediately. Respond in your Journal usingone of the Ten Ways to Stimulate Your CriticalThinking and Writing, taken from The ReadingTeacher’s Book of List, after completing your daily20 SSR minutes, 15 for Novel and 5 for AesopFables.

Ten Ways1. React – Indicate passages that cause you to react in a

certain way, during your reading and after your reading.2. Describe – relate a descriptive view of a passage.3. Question – List questions that occurred, during and after

your reading.4. Compare – Indicate likenesses of a passage and your

experience or what you know and compare them.5. Contrast – Indicate differences of a passage and your

experience.6. Think of Examples – Indicate examples related to an

example in the book.7. Ask “WHY?” – Inquire about passages that peak your

curiosity.8. Ask “HOW?” – Inquire about passages that cause you to

look at the way an event happens.9. Synthesis – Indicate the components or the “break

down” of an idea, reading, et cetera.10. Judge – Indicate your critique of the book.

TheDVC Online survey will help you, as a student, toidentify your personal learning style. This surveywill help you determine a productive manner forstudy, one that matches your style. After youcomplete the survey, read and learn abouthelpful learning study/strategies for yourlearning style.

• Write a response to your daily readings. (A responseis not a summary of the reading; rather it lets yourreaders know how and why you connected with theauthor’s words. You can use the Ten Ways toStimulate Your Critical Thinking and Writing indicatedearlier.)

• Date your response, write a title and use your bestwriting.

• The Wordsmith Site allows you to completethe activity of learning three new wordsdaily. You can learn the word of the dayand two other words from the archives.

4. The World of Math Online offers select subjects: BasicMath, Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and other mathareas. Resources offer: cool tools, formulas, test

preparations, study tips and many other fun-typeexplorations of math. By completing one of the sites, youare increasing your chances for making a smoothtransition from high school learning to college learning.

5. Texas Southern University offers a Career Planning andPlacement Center providing tools that will enhance yourabilities in every respect. By completing exercising, you

can review the cover letter, writing your resume,dressing professionally and other services toenhance your readiness for success. These skills willprepare you for your Mission: Involvement course.
