The purpose of this visit was for Caistor Yarborough students to collect information for their cross cultural research reports which is a large and inte- gral part of the Global Perspectives course run by Cambridge International Examinations. A compulsory element of this planned trip was that CYA students had to give presentations and take part in several class room activities. These took place at the senior school in Padasjoki which was where the party was based for their one week stay. Miss Syson, teacher of chemistry stated that, “Much of what they did during this period has given these five students a wonderful insight in to Scandinavian culture.” Mr Burton, group leader added that, “opportunities such as these give our students experiences far beyond their normal everyday existence back in the UK and also help to strengthen the bonds that exist between the two schools.” Of course, not every day was spent indoors and other events, such as walk- ing across a frozen lake using snow shoes and visits to re- gional businesses were all part of a remarkable and memorable five days.

…The Eaglet Team

Sam Ehret-Pickett, Keir Sowerby, Jack Wilson, Georgia Ast-bury, Lauren Smith, Harry Gates and Callum Townsend

Once again the team has produced a fabulous Eaglet, and in such a short time – well done, andthanks.  It has been a very busy time and I would like to publicly thank all the staff for their hardwork.

I am especially pleased to see our female engineers being so committed to our robotics team.  Thewhole team has worked really hard to produce a great robot.  I look forward to future successes.

Our most able students continue to lead the way with our international work, extending and expand-ing their studies to Finland, and shortly attending a symposium in Pennsylvania.

Year 9 option choices are underway and, against the national picture, separate sciences are as pop-ular and as successful as ever.  A testament again to the exceptional staff we have.

Our NEET figure (not in education, employment or training) figure was again 0%, showing how suc-cessful we are at preparing our students for post-16 life.

Ofsted have been and gone and we celebrate their recognition of our progress, but we are still work-ing hard to improve.  I would like to thank parents for supporting us in this improvement.  As alwayswe are keen for parents to become involved in Academy life.  We have a supportive PTFA and arealways looking for Governors, especially those with useful skills in finance, law or community experi-ence.  Anyone interested should contact the Clerk to Governors on 01472 855906, or by email [email protected].

Enjoy Easter when it arrives.Mr Jeremy Newnham

Message BoardIt is with great sadness that we report theloss of our Vice Chair of Governors, MrsLinda Lamb, who died unexpectedly in theNew Year.  Although a relatively new addi-tion to our Governing Body, her selflesscontribution, astute questions and com-mon-sense approach were already provinginvaluable.  She will be sorely missed, andour thoughts and condolences go out toher family and friends.

Also stepping down from our GoverningBody is Mr Bob Oxley, a stalwart of manyyears’ service.  He has amassed a wealthof knowledge and experience over theseyears, seeing the Academy evolve throughmany different phases.  His chairmanshipof the Finance Sub-committee has ensuredthat our finances are kept on the straightand narrow, and he leaves them in ahealthier position than when he arrived.  MrOxley has always been tremendously gen-erous with his time, making himself availa-ble whenever possible, and he leaves alarge space to fill on our Governing Body.We wish him well in his “second retirement”.

PTFA are running a Bottle and Chocolatestall at the Caistor Easter Fayre in theTownhall. Donations are needed please. Please leave at the Main Reception by20th March. All types and sizes are wel-come. Proceeds go towards the refurbish-ment of the Food Technology room.Thank you for your support.

On the 29th January we took a team of four to the vex robotics competition - Skyriseat King Henry VIII’s school in Coventry. These students were Katie Leeman, JackWilson, Dominic Young, and Cameron McFarlane. Although only four students weretaken many people also contributed to our achievement - including Keir Sowerby,Benjamin Bedford, Holly Smith, Simon Blackshaw, Joe Burnett and Samuel Ehret-Pickett so it was ultimately a team effort. Over a period of several weeks the teamcame together to build a clawbot and modified it to suit the needs of the game.

The game consisted of stacking skyrises and cubes on posts. After completing thepractice matches and qualifying matches we proceeded to the semi-finals wherepermanent alliances were selected. We were selected by the team that was currentlycoming second overall from King Henry VIII’s school. Unfortunately, this being ourfirst competition it had to end somewhere. Also with this being our first competitionour robot was not very advanced, this was one of our downfalls which eventuallyresulted in our robot malfunctioning. We were very lucky that this did not causepermanent problems.Out of a total of 9 teams we came fourth with our alliance. But this was not the endto our success as we received a judge’s award for our simple innovation of addingstability wheels at the front of our robot.

None of this would have been possible without Northrop Grumman who sponsoredus and who we received our kit from. We are very grateful for their sponsorship, asnone of this would have been possible without them.

Over this day many skills were developed by everybody including communication, engineering and coding skills. However, one of the most important skills that wasinvolved was our ability to work as a team through communication and listening. Wewould like to give a special thanks to Mr Andrews who accompanied us on this tripbut most of all we would like to thank Mrs Keen for coming with us; as well supportingour team throughout the several weeks and donating her classroom to us everylunchtime. None of this would have been possible without her.

We made it through to the finals on Tuesday 24th February, but unfortunately wedidn’t win. However we still had an amazing day and gained much experience

On Wednesday 25th February Local published author Veronica M Podbury wasinvited into the school to celebrate the new library. Veronica has published twobooks: ‘Secrets’ and the sequel ‘Watching’. The genre of her books is mystery

Veronica explained to the year 9 students how these books are aimed at teenag-ers, and how she tried to make them as modern as possible

References to ‘Facebook’ and mobile phones are mentioned throughout the bookso teenagers can relate to it

The books are written at a short and fast pace, as Veronica explained teenagersoften lose interest with long novels, so she wanted to capture their attention andkeep it throughout.

The students were invited to ask questions about the books and author.

They discovered a lot about how to write a successful novel and that they shouldreally just have a go.

Keir Sowerby Y9 student said – ‘It was interesting tohear how Veronica modernised the book. Also, Iliked the sketches she included on various pagesand it will keep the reader wanting to read on untilreach the next one’.

Veronicas visit hopefully will have inspired the students to read more and even start writing their own novels.

Businessman Mike Shields has donated £5000 to help our IGCSE students experi-ence other parts of the world. The students studying the IGCSE Global Perspectivesprogramme can now link up with other learners in Finland and the US.

Mike’s business, SHEild LTD offers health, safety and environment courses world-wide so he understands the importance in getting out in the world. The gesture willassist some pupils in their studies at a renewable energy symposium in Americacome March. The evidence of the donation has already been seen with the studentswho attended the Finland trip in January.

Mike said ‘I have been privileged in my career to be able to see different parts of theglobe and so I believe its crucial that people see different countries and experiencenew things’.

Mr Burton said ‘We want to turn our students into global thinkers, citizens of theworld. The programme will open up parameters when they see another culture andcan celebrate the differences between themselves and others’.

Ciara Reilly who is heading to the US in March is looking forward to exchanging workwith students from different countries. She said ‘Its going to be such a great experi-ence, a genuine once in a lifetime chance to go and see another part of the world.Anything that helps set our CV apart is worth pursuing.

Returning to school in 2015, most of us had put the setback in the Christmas singing competitionbehind us… unlike Mr Stevenson! Victory was promptly restored though, when we produced afantastic anti-bullying poster for the house competition. This gave us an opportunity to workcollectively and also learn lots about the different types of bullying. As well as our artistic abilities,we have been able to develop our sporting talents competing in the inter-house events. Thesports captains have done an excellent job encouraging pupils to get involved, thank you.We were very sad to lose Miss Carlin from the Norman team in February half term, and we wishher all the best in the return to her North West roots. A warm welcome to Mr Lyons who has takenover ‘CLyoN’. Also, thank you very much to Mrs Mackenzie, who stepped into Mr Stevenson’sshoes while he was absent this term and kept all of us Normans on track!Year 7-9 have been very busy recently producing their homework projects. In ASpaN, KS4students have had their own group of younger pupils to support and we are looking forward toseeing the completed work on the 13th March.Prefect applications are now open for Year 10 students. We hope that there will be manyNormans on the team next year. Finally, Year 11 will shortly be receiving their Pre-Public Exam results; we hope that these will bea true reflection of the work you put in and wish you all the best in your summerexaminations.

We have had another busy term in JBIGS since the start of 2015. Key stage 3handed in their first homework project of the year before Christmas and we hadsome excellent work and very creative ideas. They are now busy working ontheir second project, working towards producing 3 starters, 4 mains and 2 desserts! We workedtogether as a tutor group to produce an excellent poster for the house competition during Anti-bullying week. Pupils have then also all written their own pledge about how to make the internetsafer with regards to Safer Internet day and the use of social media etc. Y11 had their Pre-Publicexams in February and will shortly be receiving their results on the mock results day. I wish themall luck and hope they now use the experience to build on and continue revising for the exams inthe summer term. Year 9 are at a very important stage of their school career as they embark onthe Choices process where they choose the subjects they want to continue studying at Key Stage4. Make sure you speak to your teachers and consider your options carefully before you makethis big decision.

Mrs Davies is leaving us for pastures new. How do you say goodbye to a colleague who has con-tributed so much? First by thanking her for the magnificent work and support as a tutor in SaxonHouse, for her professional and caring approach to all her students, Saxon House tutors and stu-dents wish Mrs Davies all the best in her new career,

We wish all Saxon year 11 students good luck in their external examinations in their final term., andremember "perseverance conquers"

Year 10 students Sophie Wilson and Simon Blackshaw took part in the ‘YoungLeaders’ expedition over half term. The trip was for 4 days and consisted of variouschallenges in a team environment and also saw the two taking on leader roles.Keir Sowerby and Harry Gates interviewed Sophie Wilson about her experience:

Sophie, please can you tell us what Young Leaders is about?

What did you have to do on your trip?

What was your favourite activity?

Would you recommend other students to join the Young Leaders?

I’m guessing you have all played badminton, you know the fun game with the rackets andthe weird half balls, with feathers stuck in them (shuttles in other words). Well if you enjoybadminton this is an article you will definitely want to read.Interhouse badminton started at the beginning of this week (doubles, mixed doubles andsingles games) Mrs Graham, Mrs Sharp and Mr Chadwick hope that Interhouse badmin-ton will encourage more people to play and enjoy the game. Interhouse games benefityou and earn points for your house - there is nothing like a bit of friendly competition.Remember Interhouse isn’t just for badminton, other enjoyable games like basketball andfootball are also played, so if you aren’t really a badminton person don’t worry just waitfor your Interhouse sport. So, back to badminton, if you really enjoy this sport, haven’t really played it or just wantto play, there is a badminton club on Monday lunches. However, the day may change inthe future so be sure to check. All ages are welcome, so don’t be shy anyone can play.Playing badminton will improve social connections; making new friends and strongerbonds. It will also improve your skills and levels; increased stamina and accuracy, andyour health will increase. So why not go down to the P.E hall on a spare lunch?

Between 1941 and 1945 it was a dangerous time to be a Jew, the Nazis tried to wipeout all Jews. This attempt of genocide on European Jewry is known as theholocaust. By the end of the Holocaust, six million Jewish men, women andchildren had been killed in ghettos,mass-shootings, in concentration campsand extermination camps. So on the 27th of January; to keep thememory alive, candles were burnt in thememory of those who died. The 27th Jan-uary marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.

After 6 years of waiting the next game in the Star Wars Battlefront franchise is beingreleased. Star Wars (Dice) is using new technology and different approaches to makethis game stand out as much as the older games and meet up to expectations11 years since the first game on PlayStation portable, and the franchise is still goingstrong. But this game more effort, resources, time and technology is being put in thanever. They said that they want to make a game 'as fans we've all dreamt of playing'.DICE, who is famous for making the Battlefield series (but not Battlefront yet), isdeveloping the game and have dedicated their whole Swedish studio in Stockholm tothis game.DICE's team have been taking special measures to make sure this is the game worthwaiting for. To get the most amount of detail out of the models they visited the Lucascultural arts museum to scan the objects. This allows them to add more detail into themodels as they are not relying on how much detail the camera has picked up. It is alsoconfirmed that they have visited the original sets of the forest moon of Endor and theice planet Hoth although more may have been visited. The production team of DICEcommented “We went to the sets not just to capture the environments but whatemotions they invoke”
