The eagleT MessagesA Message from the HeadmasterMy Dear Ateneans,

I want to thank you and congratulate you and your mentors for the first issue of the EAGLET this schoolyear. I am happy to know that this years theme is LIVE CHRIST. SHARE CHRIST. This theme fits with the Churchs celebration of the Year of Faith that began last

October 11, 2012 and will end on November 24, 2013. The Year of Faith was declared by Pop Benedict XVI in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world (Porta Fidei 6). We cannot live Christ if we do not own Him inside our hearts. Therefore, it is important to nurture a deep and personal relationship with Christ in prayer and Sacraments especially the Most Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The more we are able to know and love Christ in prayer and the Sacraments, the more closely we are able to follow Him. The purpose of living Christ is to share Him with others especially those who are poor and needy. This is a sure proof that we are living Christ through concrete and simple acts of service to our brothers and sisters in need. As you know, our country and the entire world now are beset with great problems of war and famine. We hear terrible news about the civil war in Syria, the gun fights between the MNLF and the government troops in Zamboanga City and Basilan for over a week now, the terrorism in Iraq, for example. These are hard time of violence that cause much suffering of many innocent people. In this Year of Faith, we need to more and more pray for true peace and unity in the world and urge others to pray with us. In our small and little ways, we need to also help the innocent victims of violence. In this way, we will be able to change for the better to be better Christians, better Filipinos, better Ateneans as St. Ignatius of Loyola had envisioned all of us to be. May this issue of the EAGLET inspire all Ateneans to be more prayerful, more generous, and more compassionate towards the poor and suffering especially the victims of war and violence.

    Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam!

Fr. Norberto Maria Luza Bautista, SJ

A Message from the University PresidentForty years ago, Fr Pedro Arrupe SJ, the Superior

General of the Jesuit order, spoke to a gathering of European Jesuit alumni. It was in that speech that he first uttered the phrase that has shaped the formation that happens here at the Ateneo de Manila: men for others.

This is so simple a phrase it runs the risk of becoming a tired tag line, an empty slogan. In that speech, Fr Arrupe reminded us of what Jesus Christ lived and taught, namely, that true love for God cannot be separated from love of neighbor, especially the poor who live at the margins of wealth and power. He also talked about social sin and of the sinister ways in which sin objectifies itself and goes out to the periphery of our personal core. He admitted how difficult it is to be good in a broken world, and how tempting it always is to just resign and give up and abdicate our responsibility to lead and serve others. Then he challenged us to live more simply, to refrain from profiting from unjust social structures, and to work actively in dismantling these systems of injustice in the world.

Since the theme of this issue of the Eaglet is Live Christ, Share Christ, I do hope that you will strive to know Jesus Christ better. It is not enough to just know of him, the way you study subject matter in school. Know him who is very much present and close to you. Know Christ that you may love Him, and follow Him. Learn to love others, and not just those who can love you back. Then perhaps you will discover that living Christ, sharing Christ will be the deepest love your heart can bear.

    ad majorem Dei gloriam,

Fr. Jose Ramon T Villarin, S.J.

Diocesan Mass of The Holy SpiritBefore the start of the Mass, I was so struck when I saw the different schools in Quezon City. Many different faces surprised me. They all seemed happy to represent their schools in the Diocesan Mass of the Holy Spirit. They also seemed excited to hear the Homily of Bishop Ongtioco. As a representative of the Ateneo Grade School, I also felt the same way. When the celebration started, there was a parade of the different school flags. When our flag was being displayed, I felt the rush of the Atenean spirit throughout my body. I also felt excitement and fear. Excitement because it shows how glad I am to be an Atenean, fear because the flag might fall because of its size. Then, the mass started. The introduction song was played and the altar servers, priests and the bishop marched to the altar. As I sang along the song, I felt content and happy, though Im not a good singer. After the Readings and

Responsorial Psalm, the Homily was delivered by Bishop Ongtioco. The Homily was a nice one and it spoke about how we should trust in the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit will help us this school year. But the Holy Spirit will not be the only one to help us so we must also help ourselves by trusting in the Holy Trinity, telling the truth and obeying our parents,

teachers and of course, God. For me, when I heard the Homily, I thought it was just simple tips on how to be straight As students, but when I reviewed on what I heard, I saw a deeper meaning that the Triune God is with us whatever we do, whatever problem we face and that the God with three personas is with us forever. When it was time to say Peace be with you to others, I could clearly see the smile on their faces and through their eyes, the joy of giving peace. When the Mass ended, I was able to bless to Bishop Ongtioco and even got to take a picture with him. At that moment, I felt joyful and blessed as I returned to school with a smile on my face and joy in my heart. Shawn Hervie D. Rom

The Ateneo Junior Golf Team dominated the Midgets Division in the recently concluded ICTSI-JGFP Junior Golf Tournament held in various golf courses in Metro Manila. The Ateneo Jungolfers were the best jungolf team in the tournament winning the championship in the Midgets 1 (11-14 yrs old) and the runner-up honors in the Midgets 2 (8-10 yrs old) divisions. It was a rare finish for the two teams considering that the field was full of talented players from the other schools in the city. Aside from winning the team competition (5 to play 3 to count format), junior HS student and Team Captain Aidric Chan from 7-Malvar who took 4th place

honors in last years Callaway Junior World Tournament and Champion in the West College Combine in San Diego, Ca was the champion in the individual category and Carl Corpus from 7-Agoncillo another veteran in international tournaments took the second place honors. Aidric and Carl was supported by other junior high school students Karl dela Torre from 8-De Britto and Marc Corrales from 7-Luna who also have international experiences to boost their campaign kept their best

rounds in the final leg to make them unreachable in the final leg. In the Midgets 2 division, the tandem of grade schoolers Maio Castaneda (Team Captain) from 5-Manobo and Miggy Roque from 4-Maniago also with international experiences in the Callaway Junior World Tournament in San Diego kept their composure in the 5 legs of the tournament using the four to play two to count format. Maio and Miggy combined for 78pts in the final leg to preserve their number two position. Yuan Arbatin from 3-Mayon and Lloyd Rico from 4-Tupas also provided the needed support in the team against 40 other bets from Xavier School, La Salle GH, and La Salle Zobel.

AJHS NEW ORG ATENEO DANCE DISTRICT WINS 1ST PRIZE IN FOOTLOOSE! Paul Daza

Ateneo Dance District (ADD), the spanking new dance organization of the Ateneo Junior High School, won its first competition on the night of Friday, January 24. Beating dance crews older than they were from the Ateneo High School, ADD took first prize at Footloose, the dance craze competition of Ignation, the 18th Ateneo de Manila High School fair. Thanks to their energetic, crowd-pleasing piece, the members of ADD took home not just bragging rights but P30,000 in prizes as well. As announced during the competition, the winners were determined not only by the contests two judges, but by the members of the audience as well, each of whom paid P10 for every vote they cast for their favorite group. All told, eight dance crews competed in Footloose. Finishing on top of Footloose were the following members of ADD: Matthew Christian V. Pile (8-Bellarmine), Arvin Martin I. Santos (8-Bellarmine), Joaquin Antonio R. Nacino (8-Berchmans), Jose Alejandro P. Agravante (8-Brebeuf), Dominic Xavier L. Villa (7-Burgos), Carlo Miguel G. Aquino (8-Gonzaga), Miguel Jay A. Dimaiwat (8-Gonzaga), Martin Javier L. Garcia (8-Pignatelli), Antonio Leon B. Martinez (8-Pignatelli), Emmanuel Javier S. Mariazeta (8-Regis), and Luis Gabriel U. Montenegro (8-Regis). To prepare for Footloose, the boys practiced three hours every day for several weeks under the guidance of their coach and moderator, Danni Cornejo. Ateneo Dance District was established as an AJHS org in June 2013. The story of the ADD is not just about talent but a story of a lot of hard work and perseverance. You should have seen how the boys practiced frequently . Not content with mere talent, they constantly were trying to reinvent themselves. Their coach, by her sheer love of dance, would come all the way from Makati to train the kids. There is a term we have for that . We call it giving and not counting the cost . We are all proud of you! (Photo by Ingrid Palisoc Agravante)

Ateneans awarded in the Honor the Microsoft ChampsAnton Raphael S. Cabalza, AGS 11, and Ms. Mara Melanie D. Perez, Grade 6 Class Adviser, were awarded in the Honor the Microsoft Champs competition sponsored by Microsoft Philippines, National Bookstore and HTC Philippines. The contest is a nationwide search for the most outstanding students of the country. Ms. Perez nominated Anton, her student for 4 years, by writing an essay about his achievements in school and in his community, and why he should be considered as a Microsoft Ambassador. Out of almost 200 nominations of high school and college students, Anton is chosen as one of the 8 most outstanding students in the Philippines. Each awardee received a copy of Windows 8 OS, the new Microsoft Office 2013, and an HTC 8S phone. Another Atenean from the Loyola Schools, Louie T. Koa, was awarded as one of the student Microsoft Ambassadors. The 5th Year BS ECE student was also nominated by his teacher, Asst. Prof. Carlos M. Oppus. The awarding ceremony that formally honored the Microsoft Champs with their nominators was held last September 14 at the Microsoft Booth in Glorietta 4. Honor the Microsoft Champs aims to empower students by providing them the opportunity to be recognized outside the classroom for their hard work and accomplishments, said Tovia Vaaelua, Microsoft Philippines Business Lead for Office.

Another feather on an already feather-filled cap of Mrs Theresa Roldan

The AJHS congratulates Mrs Theresa Roldan, Music Subject Area Coordinator , for placing the Philippines in the map once again by the recent win of the Hail Mary the Queen Children Choir. The Hail Mary the Queen Childrens Choir of the Immaculate Concepcion Parish in Cubao, under the

baton of Maria Theresa Vizconde Roldan and her husband Jude B. Roldan won first place in the Childrens Choir of the World title in this years Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in United Kingdom. According to a DZMM article, their moving performance, received not just a standing ovation, but also the longest applause from the international audience. This feat becomes even more awe-inspiring with the fact that the choir is composed of very young members of only about 7-17 years old. This for us in the Ateneo Junior High School becomes a testament to her strength not just as a choir master but as an effective teacher to our young students.

The Ateneo Boys Choir won in an International

    Choir Competition

The Ateneo Boys Choir received a Silver 8 diploma in the recently concluded Sing N Joy Manila. an International Choir Competition, held last December 14, 2013, at Aliw Theatre. INTERKULTUR in collaboration with the Manila Broadcasting Company and the Philippine Choral Directors Association staged the choral event. Ms. Daisy N. Marasigan, Ms. Roselle Elinore H. The eagleT aMDgMILAGROS M. LUCAS --- A BIG HEART FOR THE AGS COMMUNITYMrs. Josie Martinez, AHAA Primary School

Whats in a name? Milagros Mila Malcampo Lucas was born on September 8, the birthday of Our Blessed Virgin Mary. As I recall in our conversations, that was why her parents decided to give her the name Milagros, this was in honor of our Mother Mary. What can I say about one of this years recipients of the prestigious Rev. Henry Lee Irwin, SJ award? Please allow me to share with you a few things about her. Boss Mila would jokingly be called as the forever OIC because of her expertise and credibility as well as the magnanimity of her heart, passion for teaching and her obedience to her mission. Every time a Primary School coordinator would take a maternity leave (study leave or leave due to prolonged sickness), she would always be there to be the OIC. During relief operations in school, she would be one of those who would volunteer packing goods. She is a regular volunteer of ACED, Synergeia and teacher training in Bukidnon. If she has LEAP students, she would ask her GLC to give her only one or two students so she could focus on them more closely and teach them better. Teaching for her is not work but a mission that she is passionate about. She willingly sacrifices and gives her time even on holidays and weekends. Being the daughter of an Ozanam awardee, Dr. Jose Lucas and the younger sibling of Fr. Jesus M. Lucas, SJ, is it any wonder that she is such? Thanks for your generosity and Magis spirit, Mila!

LANGUAGE OF THE HEARTPaolo Ven B. Paculan

She graduated with a degree in Sociology and Filipino-Tagalog Language Studies with a minor in Philippine Studies. She was a volunteer in Madapdap, Pampanga, where toxic waste victims suffer from conditions such as congenital heart disease, lukemia, and cerebral palsy. She uses Tagalog to help people get access to government services. And shes from California. Imagine a cousin of yours, the one who was born in the U.S. Your tito and tita migrated before both of you were born. Theyre in California or one of a hundred places outside the Philippines where Filipinos are a thriving community. Shes your Facebook friend but youve only met a few times face-to-face. You call her ate. She looks just like you. And she sounds just like you. Thats how I would introduce Ivy Dulay. I met Ivy at the 3rd International Conference for Filipino as a Global Language held in Manila last August 3-5, 2012. She gave a talk on how Tagalog is the 3rd most commonly spoken language in America besides English, on how Filipino-Americans yearned to connect with their heritage language, and on what she and other Filipino-languageadvocatesweredoingtofillthatneed. She recalled how she once didnt care about learning FilipinosinceproficiencyinEnglishwaswhatschoolsrequiredand rewarded. But her attitude changed for a very Filipino reasonher family. I grew up thinking that I was American, and that my family was American, and we were the same as everyone else, relates Ivy. But then I witnessed a family member being denied services because she spoke with an accent. She also remembers her father and how I would have been closer to him if I had learned his native language. So when she found out that Filipino was being taught in her college, she jumped at the opportunity. And from there her passiongrew.Shewouldeventuallybethefirstpersontograduate

with a degree in Language StudiesFilipino and Tagalog in University of California San Diego (UCSD). She got a Fullbright Scholarship to study Filipino in the Philippines. Through the University of Californiass Education Abroad Program, she was able to study Panitikang Pilipino and Sociology at UP Diliman. After college, she did development work in the Philippines. Then she returned to the US and worked at Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), an organization based in Historic Filipinotown Los Angeles and provides health services and culturalpreservationprojects.In2006,shewasoneofthefirst18to be given a professional license to teach the Filipino Language. She has published several major works including Isang Pag-aaral Tungkol sa Epekto ng Bilingwalismo sa Pakikipagtalastasan ng Ilang Pilipino (A Study about the Effect of Bilingualism in the Communication of Filipinos) in a University of Michigan Journal. She has given talks on Filipino Language and Culture in different parts of the U.S. and, more recently, in the Philippines. During that conference held in Manila, she was with fellow Filipino advocates from Malaysia, Japan, and Hawaii. The Filipino language is as global as the Filipino was one of the messages in that seminar. She was very happy then because: My greatest joy is being able to get to know another persons story and experience with the help of knowing how to speak, read, write, and understand Filipino. Before, when people would ask me Marunong ka bang mag-Filipino? I would often just shake my head and the conversation would end shortly after. Now, I can say,

Opo, marunong po, pero nahihiya pa rin! Then, the other person will continue with the conversation in Filipino, and well share beautiful stories and many laughs. And shes keeping at it. Shes presently doing graduate studies on Dual Language Development in Education at Cal State University Long Beach. She says she dreams of starting Filipino language schools and programs in Los Angeles. She already started a pilot class in Filipino Language and

Culture at the Los Angeles School of Global Studies. I asked her what she would say to Filipino students and she replied: View the Filipino language as a beautiful asset! There are many Filipinos born in America who wish they had Filipino language classes in schools. Napakahalaga ang pambansang wika natin. It is a beautiful language which will continue to open doors for you and for others. Do not be embarassed by any type of accent wewereallcreateduniquelyandinGodsimage. Take any opportunity you can to commend each other for speaking Filipino. Often, we see younger generations getting praised for speaking English, but if they hear positive atittudes towards Filipino, then it can help others become more proud of being Filipino. Mabuhay ang wikang Filipino! Recently, Ivy showed up in my Facebook timeline. She greetedherfianceahappybirthday, mahal.Agooddefinitionoflanguage of the heart would beit is the language you use to give names to those you love the most. If so, then I know what Ivys is.

The team made it all the way from quarter to semis, all wins. They got through the finals against Makati Football Club. It was only 1-0 in favor of Makati Football Club. Considering that it was a 7 aside game where 7 players are needed each game, the boys played 7 games with no subs under the scorching heat. Not bad for a 7-man team. Zeth Medina placed 2nd in IBONs Essay Contest

    Mr. Pen Medina

Super proud of my youngest son, Zeth Medina, who placed 2nd in an Inter-school On-The-Spot Essay Writing Contest today which had for its theme the rekindling of Andres Bonifacios nationalism among the youth of today. The contest was organized by the IBON Foundation, ACT Philippines and the Department of Education-NCR, and supported by the National Historical Institute. When Zeth left this morning, he begged us not to go to the venue for moral support

because he didnt need more pressure. Throughout the day, Miss Ella Mara Perez, his mega supportive adviser, provided us with a rundown of the proceedings through text messages except for the results in the afternoon. Zeth had asked her not to text us the outcome. And when we picked him at the Ateneo and saw him running happily towards us we knew it was good news. He blurted out, I won 2nd place!!! and waved the silver medal at us and handed us an envelope saying, I also won 5,000 pesos. Its my early Christmas gift for you, guys! We controlled our tears. I thought that was dramatic enough but when we got home, he cried and hugged us and said, Thank you, guys. Youre the best parents. Thank you, dad, for your patience and guidance. Thank you, mom, for pushing me to be the best that I can be. This time we couldnt hold back our tears anymore. So the three of us cried together in extreme happiness! This is because a couple of days ago, he nearly backed out of the competition - he thought he wasnt good enough for it and was scared he would disappoint his classmates. Now he is so ecstatic talking about loving life and being more confident of himself and his talents and couldnt wait for Monday to see his classmates! Thank you very much, Ms. Perez!(Mrs. Emelyn Somera, Araling Panlipunan Subject Area Coordinator, also gave her full support to our school representative and awarded him with an Ateneo medal.)

The Winning essay of Zeth Medina:

Revolution, Education and Love for NationThe love for God is the love for our country and the love for others. - Andres Bonifacio

Many have said that the children of a country are its future and hope since chidren really have the potential to learn and do things by themselves. But one thing children cannot grasp that much is the concept of nationalism. So others have been trying to educate the children of today about the importance of nationalism and how other people in the past have done it already, but none can compare to the outstanding nationalism of Andres Bonifacio. He cared for and loved his country a lot that it even went to the point where he started a revolution against the Spaniards in hopes that someday, the Philippines would be free from Spain and have an unabusive government but his life was taken away before he could see a new Philippines, one that would succeed in being independent. However, either if Bonifacio may be dead or alive today, we still have young Filipinos who are ready to fight for the rights of their country and will defend the Philippines with all their hearts. Bonifacio has also read some books which inspired him to start the revolution and wrote some letters himself out of love for his country and appears to be some kind of intellect aside from being a brave Filipino. Our children of today should be educated about this so that they may know about Andres Bonifacio and his good deeds done for his country and may also be enlightened to look up to him as a role model and possibly copy his nationalism for the Philippines in this modern world. Through being educated about Bonifacio and his actions done, the importance of nationalism will always be known by the generations to come and it will be still alive even after that. Another possible way for Bonifacios nationalism to be remembered aside from educating the children about it, is by doing acts out of love for our country, ranging from starting a complicated revolution, to things as simple as sharing to others how you feel about the state of our country and how much you care for it. We can express in any way how much we love our country and through this and keeping up this action, this is also another way of keeping nationalism alive. Now, as Ive mentioned, Bonifacio is a great person and will always be remembered through his actions but the young children of today must learn from what hes done and written but no one has done this quite yet. I am now writing this essay to you, dear reader, in hopes that one day, someone, anyone, will rise up and start a revolution, make the country change for the better, and follow in The Supremos footsteps because of their love for their country. Mr. Salvador Appointed as AGS Headmaster from April 2014-March 2017

Mr Jose Antonio P. Salvador (Jonny) has been appointed AGS Headmaster for an initial 3-year term, from 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2017: 15 November 2013

Memo to: The University CommunitySubject: Appointment of Ateneo Grade School Headmaster

Upon the recommendation of the Search Committee for the Ateneo Grade

School (AGS) Headmaster, and with the approval of the Ateneo de Manila Board of Trustees, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Jose Antonio P Salvador (Jonny) as AGS Headmaster for an initial 3-year term, from 1 April 2014 to 31 March 2017.

Mr Salvador is currently in charge of formation and student affairs in the Junior High School. Prior to this post, he served the AGS in various capacities as Head Counselor, Assistant Headmaster for Student Affairs, and Officer-in-Charge of the Grade School.

He is true-blue all the way, from grade to graduate schools. He graduated with an MA in Educational Administration (1998), AB Psychology (1988), High School (1984), and Grade School (1980), all from the Ateneo de Manila.

On behalf of the Ateneo de Manila, I would like to thank Jonny for his magnanimity in taking on this important task of leading the Grade School as we continue to execute the K-12 program, the integration of the basic education units, and the formation for mission of our teachers and young wards.

I would like to assure Jonny and our students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni that the University leadership will help him lead the Grade School, particularly in the strategic crossings we need to take in the coming years. I have also requested for the assignment of a Jesuit father to serve as Assistant to the Headmaster, who shall also be part of the administrative team.

As we welcome Jonny, we also express our heartfelt thanks to Fr Norberto Bautista SJ (Kit) for serving our Grade School community and the entire University for the past six years. Fr Kit spearheaded and implemented important programs such as Singapore-benchmarking and the Workshop on Ignatian Sprituality for Parents (WISP). These, and many more, have contributed to the vibrant and dynamic Grade School community we now see.

Let us continue to pray for our leaders, our students and teachers, the staff who support us. As our nation begins to rebuild from the ruins of this superstorm, may our ministry of shaping the minds and hearts of young Ateneans be carried out with renewed hope and strength for our people.

Two Educators focus on Global Education

Jose Salvador, Head for Student Affairs and Formation joined Ateneo High School Principal Gabriel Mallillin, in a one week overseas conference in Honolulu Hawaii last July 27.

The conference was held at Punahou School- a school whose prominent roster of alumni include American President Barack Obama. Spearheaded by the schools Wo Center for International Studies, the conference manged to bring together several countries across the globe representing various school systems.

This gathering of a global community of educators enabled them to spend time in shared inquiry about global education and to design learning environments that they could apply in their home schools.

Many of the sessions were designed around challenging paradigms and offering alternatives that are more product- based , student centric and global in its thrust. These sessions were complimented by hands on experiences with an international contingent of Junior High School and High School Students who simultaneously were in attendance for a workshop. The teacher- participants were given occasions to facilitate sessions with them and at the same time gather their thoughts on such global issues like food and the environment.

There was also an opportunity for educators to share ideas with one another. The Ateneo contingent had a chance to share with other teachers about the struggle for our national identity, given the diaspora of Filipinos in search of a better life outside.

In the end, the opportunity given to the two educators from Ateneo could not have been any more timely than this. Their return home, on the month that the Philippines commemorates its annual Buwan ng Wika ( Language and Heritage Month ) affirmed the pervasive view that global education is never just a process of going out but a looking in and reflecting more deeply on that which defines who we are as a people.

(The participants came from all over the globe : China, Japan, Denmark, New Zealand, UK, India, Scotland, Philippines)

(The teachers seemed moved by the learning session on the Philippines)

    HIGH HOPES, HIGH EXPECTATIONS

    Reinell Bleu Ladera

High Hopes, High Expectations. These were the words that burst out from the Officer-in-Charges mouth, Mrs.Carmela C. Oracion , which challenged the pioneering batch of the Ateneo Junior High School 2013-2014. Last June 5, 2013, which was also the first day of classes in AJHS, an orientation was conducted to inform and orient the new students of AJHS regarding the changes which they need to cope with and the challenges they are about to face within the entire school year. Mrs. Santos, the grade 7 Coordinator and Mrs. Castaeda, the Grade 8 Coordinator first welcomed the new students and opened officially the orientation. They declared the speakers of the event which were Mr. Salvador, the Student Affairs Head, Mrs. Arespacochaga, the Academic Affairs Head and Mrs. Carmela C. Oracion, the Officer-In-Charge in AJHS. Mr. Salvador first conquered the stage. He tackled all about introducing the Junior High School and distinguishing the differences between the Grade School, Junior High School and Senior High School. He commenced his speech with a very pleasant voice. He said that we are very lucky because we are the prime batch of AJHS, which was brought by the immediate implementation of K-12 Curriculum. However, we also have responsibilities to do such as adjusting to the environment, grading system, uniform, surroundings etc. Mr. Salvador said that every decision we make and every step we take are graded, as opposed to the usual system that assignments, recitations, and seatworks were not part of the class standing. The uniforms were copied from the High Schools uniform style. But even though were technically high school students, our environment is located at the Ateneo Grade School, for the reason that there is no sufficient amount of space that the AJHS could occupy. This situation is just temporary or tentative only and will hopefully last in three years.

Schola BrevisAngelico Garcia & Noel Gamolo

Schola Brevis is the first week of school, it came from the Latin words schola (school), and brevis (brave). This is the week where you will see your new section and new classmates. This week is for the class moderators of each section to explain the rules and regulations of the school. The class moderators will introduce themselves to their students and vice versa. The students will also meet their subject teachers and get a way to know others more. Both the teachers and students will have activities to know each other better like telling your unique abilities and traits that are different from other people and things others cant do which you want to share with other people. The best part is when the students will share their experiences during summer and explain why it was their favorite event in their summer time. The class moderator will tell the students what will happen during the year and the differences of it to the previous years. He/She will introduce the year for his/her students so less problems will come for everyone and they will have a fun year. This is also the time for students to ask questions and things they dont understand to start the year right.

Back to School Jacob Francis G. Meimban

Were you so scared of going back to school that you felt like fainting just thinking about it? As you counted down the days of your freedom, did you feel trepidation at the thought of walking down the halls of the Ateneo Grade School [AGS] for a year? Fear not my friends, school is actually cool! Phineas and Ferb were wrong when they said that school interrupts summer fun because school is exciting, exhilarating and a fun-filled adventure in itself. First of all, there are groundbreaking changes in the AGS this year under a program called K-12. When we finished school in March last school year, my classmates and I were Grade 3; but when we entered school this June, we are Grade 5! Its like we skipped a whole grade! Not only that, the Middle School now consists of just Grades 5 and 6, then we proceed to Junior High School. Whatever grade you are in, after the tons of homework and quizzes, you must be looking forward to new and exciting events in CO-CA, Intramurals especially with the introduction of handball, and the Salu-Salo. I am sure that other students like me feel that the CO-CA and Intramurals are cool activities that drive away the stress from academic demands. I cant wait to experience all the exciting events still to come for the school year!

Grade 3 Cafeteria Orientation 7:30 am, Thursday, June 6, 2013The Grade 3 students eagerly lined up and waited for their turn to go to the Cafeteria for the orientation. This orientation was to prepare the students for another FIRST Activity they will have in Grade 3 which is eating lunch in school. They had to be familiarized with cafeteria routines and their table assignments. The students were guided in choosing dishes for their meal. The orientation was also a good opportunity to push the CLAYGO campaign of the school. The students were directed to the Segregation Area for their used plates and utensils. It was truly a learning experience for the students. Happy Lunch Time, Grade 3 Students!

AntiBullying CampaignLucas Yumul and Javi Dalupan

The Anti-bullying campaign is very helpful in our campus and everywhere else. It is helpful because this program helps students who are bullied to be protected. The Anti bullying campaign stops the bullies and forms them into wise gentlemen. Students, Faculty and Administrators thought of many different ways on how to prevent

bullying throughout the campus. One of the best ways is to be an active peacekeeper in your school, specifically here in the Ateneo. Its also good that President Aquino wrote a new law that against bullying. We also thought, why not make friends with the bully? Through this, the bully and the bullied can be friends and learn friendship. We have experienced bullying before and it is not right for other people to do this to others. It is very important then that everyone in the community is made aware of this issue and how we as individuals can help solve it.

AGS BULLYING PREVENTION CAMPAIGN FEATURED IN TV PATROLSchools gears up for Anti-Bullying Act and prepares various programs to prevent bullying in campus. The Ateneo Grade School came up with a Bullying Prevention Campaign pamphlet which was distributed to the students during the first week of classes. The pamphlet was featured in TV Patrol last June 7, 2013, Friday from the report of Ms. Doris Bigornia.

AJHS begins 2014 in celebration of the Feast of Sto Nino The Ateneo Junior High School students had their very first batch liturgical celebration this 2014 with the Feast day of the Sto Nino. Presiding over the mass was a relatively newly ordianed priest who is not a stranger to basic education. Albay native Fr Roy Cenon Ragas SJ whose prior assignment was East Timor was once a Math Teacher at the Ateneo High School. His homily , which took the for of a modern day parable about how faith changes ones perspectives was easy to the ears of our Junior High School boys because it was a story that was very well delivered . Before the Mass attendees moved back to their rooms after the mass, Mrs Carmela C Oracion took the podium to thank those who organized the very first mass of the year . She also left some points for reflection for the students to think about throughout the day, emanating from the engaging homily that Fr Roy delivered.

The Grade 5 Recollection Paolo L. Cruz

It is in the middle of June when most Grade 5 students have their first recollection. What is a recollection you might ask? Its a time to rest from your daily schedule and dedicate yourself to praying and spending time with God, instead of playing Minecraft and using gadgets. Its also a time to recollect old memories. Grade 5 students went to school on a Saturday, going to their assigned venues to proceed with the Recollection. There were activities such as playing an ice breaker entitled Would You Be My Friend? We also did a reflection, a scripture reading, and was able to see a video and PowerPoint presentation. It felt like I was with the Holy Trinity (God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit) the whole time. My heart was learning, recollecting and realizing more than I knew and what I forgot. My fellow classmates felt the same as I. The Celebration of the Holy Mass was the last activity of the Recollection. Fr. Unson was our presider with 3 students who were chosen to recite the First Reading, Second Reading and the Responsorial Psalm. Fr. Unson gave a Homily which really defined the Gospels every word. The Communion Rite was the time I really felt Jesus presence. I went home like I literally saw and talked with the Holy Trinity. This was one of the best times with Jesus.

The Grade 6 Recollection Kiel Llaga

This years recollection is a very anticipated one. This event happened in the Ateneo Grade school. There were lots of activities like the Mass, reflection time, and more. It was a very peaceful occasion where students interacted with God and talked to him. We learned lots of things like prayers and how God is in everything from our Recollection Guide, Ms. Perez. We would always remember this recollection as a very fruitful religious encounter. This event gave us the chance to talk to the Lord and God himself. There were times when we had the chance to talk with our friends and times when we were allowed to draw and write about things. And then we meditated peacefully and quietly. At the mass, we prayed reverently, sang songs and had communion. When the mass and recollection had ended, we went home proudly and joyfully. Overall, this recollection was one of the best I have experienced. Now, I pray more reverently, reflect more often, learned a lot of things and finally do better in class because I have found God in all things. This recollection is truly a great event this school year.

    Encounter with Jesuits

Matthew Dela Cruz and Enzo Antonio

Whats life like being a Jesuit? That question was answered throughout the memorable experience in the Encounter with the Jesuits. In this particular occasion, we learn the hardships and enjoyment of being a Jesuit. The experience was remarkably touching in some way, that it even let our minds touch the proposal of laying our life to Jesus. If they were trying to inspire us, we can assure you guys it worked. Straight to the point; our guest talked about his life-changing experiences with us and the steps to become a Jesuit. Most importantly, he shared how he arrived at

his final decision of becoming a Jesuit. Of course, he also answered our questions. On our most honest opinions, me and Enzo really think this was a very unique and touching experience. We really think this experience was really important on our Christian Development. We completely look forward for the next time it happens.

in AGS by Luke Amoncio and David Cruz

The Environment Week was celebrated last July 8-12, 2013. As we know, a couple of weeks ago we celebrated Environment Week. We kicked off with a speaker telling us some environmental facts and stories during flag ceremony. We wore environmental shirts for the Environment Week contest. We also practiced reduce, reuse and recycle even more actively, sorting our trash into the appropriate trash bins. The cafeteria served healthy food and beverages like fruit shakes and vegetables. During lunch and recess, we paid extra particular attention to the practice of CLAYGO and BYOB. We capped the week off with some high fives for a successful celebration!

in AJHS by James Santos and Gabriel Micael Abangan

Essentially, Environment Week raises awareness on the damages that people are doing to the environment. People are accountable to the effects of climate change that are being experienced in all parts of the world. These include massive flooding and drought that bring death and suffering to many. Environment Week tells us that it is never too late to do something to reduce these damages. It is about teaching people how to help the environment every day of the week. Tips were given on how to help reduce environment footprint such as: eat less beef and pork eat out at restaurants less eat fewer dairy products

drink fewer soft drinks eat more fruits and vegetables drink less bottled water eat less packaged food and junk food walk to the local farmer market or grocery store upgrade to energy efficient refrigerator eat wild fish which are not endangered Advice was also given on where to throw trash in the proper trash bin. This will guide new students and the new grade 1 students (previously prep) on proper waste disposal. As students were also told where food waste are sent, we realized that Environment Week is

associated to the subject science. It is really amazing to learn about African night crawlers, the earthworms that eat the food waste and their feces turn to fertilizer that revitalizes the

soil. Imagine, such small creatures are actually doing something to help the environment. This makes us think. What about us? We are supposed to be the more intelligent creature. Unlike the earthworms, we have arms and legs and brains that make us do more and create more. Unfortunately, we use these advantages for our gain without thinking about the damages we bring to the environment. So every time we cut trees to build condominiums, every time we throw a small piece of candy wrapper outside our car to keep it clean, every time we use plastic bags for our convenience, we should think first. We should remember the African night crawlers. We ask ourselves, are they more evolved than us?

Gilas Night, Gr. 6 Class NightThomas Bersamira & Gonzalo Viray

Class Night is a memorable moment in a students life because we get to bond with our classmates and teachers overnight. This years Class Night was held last August 30, 2013 and is entitled Gilas Night. Ms. Perez coined the term which simply means Grade sIx cLASs NIGHT. Before the start of the actual Class Night, each team practiced their dance for the night. After rehearsal, the students gave their bags to their fetchers to bring home. Then the students can either go on inflatables, play basketball, or swim in the pool. After a while the students had dinner. When the program started, the students were required to participate with their sections in the games and team presentations. Then, the boys went back to their classrooms and they can had fun with their class adviser until 12 midnight. Some classes even went around the campus for ghost hunting. When the students woke up the next they, they started packing their things to prepare to leave. But they would never forget the memories they shared with their classmates during this Class Night.

International Day of PeaceThe United Nations mandated that the 21st of September of every year is the International Day of Peace. Hence, the Araling Panlipunan Department, led by the Subject Area Coordinator, Mrs. Emelyn Somera, spearheaded this celebration through a momentous one minute silence and a recitation of a prayer for peace. Everyone in school also wore shirts with positive messages or peace symbols. In the AP classes of Grade 6, Mrs. Helen Amante, Ms. Tin Marcelino and Ms. Ella Perez taught their students how to make a Peace Crane after telling a story about the girl who was victimized by a World War II atomic bomb and sincerely prayed for World Peace. Folding the peace paper crane is a complicated task and truly requires patience. So, the AP teachers were really proud of their students after they completed their origami cranes. The

young gentlemen also wrote their personal prayers for peace on the crane and hung them at their classroom windows to remind them of the importance of peace.

Mr. Salvador Unveils the New AJHS CoCA Grading System

    Paolo Murga and Thomas Oh

Last September 11, 2013, Mr. Salvador, the Assistant Principal for Student Affairs of the Ateneo Junior High School and a former club moderator himself, visited the various Co-Curricular Activity (COCA) venues in order to reveal the new grading system for COCA and to introduce the new Portfolio Method for school use.

ThePortfolioMethod,asexplainedbyMr.Salvador,isaflexiblestudent-centered approach for both students and teachers to use to gather more data for evaluating, improving and even grading, the students performance. Aside from the simple letter mark given after each quarter to denote the students general proficiencyinhischosenCOCA,thePortfolioMethodwillgiveparentsachanceto be better informed since it will display their sons actual works, which can reveal in greater detail his personality and special skills compared to just a letter mark.ThePortfolioMethodisflexibleandstudent-centeredbecauseitwillallow the student to input basically anything about himself, whether its his past accomplishments, awards, reflections, goals, personalinfo, pictures, experiences,a diary written articles, and the like. In fact, some students already have their own personal portfolios at home. As mentioned by Mr. Salvador, the students are encouraged to include information or material on those who helped in their journey in school such as their parents, teachers, idols, friends, classmates, etc, and even challenges or low points to complete their chronicled adventure. Mr. Salvador also emphasized the use of the portfolio as a time capsule or a way to look back to ones humble beginnings. He narrated a story about a former student of his in the Arts and Crafts Club who is now known as a professional artist and the creator of the Foldabots franchise, Jomike Tejido, who once amazed some fans with some things he had created in his younger years. He stressed that when we students grow-up and graduate, people wont be interested for our grades, but for our personalities; the portfolio will represent ones personality. Currently, those who are handling COCA are considering whether they should have students use E-Portfolios or folders. Mr. Salvador also stated that it would be useful to introduce various forms of media to the portfolio, and that there are many ways of formatting it. Pictures couldbeuseful, alongwithreflectionsorlifelessons.Theportfolioscouldalsobeina form of a journal, wherein people can write their thoughts and ideas about their personal lives. The portfolio could also be used to reevaluate oneself, if there had been progress throughout the weeks, months, or years. Mr. Salvador also said that when applying for a job, they wont be interested in grades alone. He mentioned that the employers will want to know who you are; thus, having an organized portfolio to present to them would mean a greater opportunity for employment. Let us pray that this new system will help us openly express ourselves, and our own talents, in COCA.

THE AJHS COCA PORTFOLIOMr. Jonny Salvador

What , no coca marks for the first quarter for AJHS ? may be a likely response to those who will receive the report cards this Parent - Teacher Meet-Up week. Lest , we start entertaining thoughts that there may have been a lapse in the grading or worse, that the coca moderators felt that their members did not deserve a grade, you can be assured that the reason is far more justified that this. The view of gradually shifting to a more relevant grading system for COCAs was idea long being considered given the very multifaceted ( as opposed to linear ) nature of COCAs. To add to this, the desire for the moderators to actually evaluate students more comprehensively, has often been constrained by the limited number of meetings in a quarter. This is most especially true for the first quarter where interruptions due to inclement weather are commonplace. Given these two compelling reasons, the AJHS is shifting to a semestral COCA grading system rather than quarterly grading system. And in place of the usual letter grades, the COCA program will be slowly introducing the COCA Portfolio system . Student Portfolios are areas where students can showcase their work in a club, display their personal photos or essays, and chronicle their growth. Moreover, the portfolio approach will encourage greater collaboration with team mates, teachers and parents. Hopefully this portfolio would be able provide a more holistic view of the students as a member of a club rather than a simplistic letter mark that does little in the way of acknowledging each students uniqueness. The moderators have started guiding our students through making portfolios and once the so called finished products are available, youll be the first to know .

    The AJHS CoCA Orientation:

The Heros JourneyCarl Chan and Nate Santos

Last June 29, the first ever Co-Curricular Activity (CoCA) Orientation for the Junior High was held at the Irwin Theatre. Both Grades 7 and 8 attended the event. At the start of the assembly, a video was played comparing life in the Junior High to a typical adventure-a hero living a normal life until he discovers something, a quest, a mentor, the treasures, and the ever-present ups and downs. The teachers said that the AJHS experience was incomplete without failure. After the adventure, the hero returns home living a new life, but adventure calls again, repeating the cycle. After the speech, the usual video montage about all the clubs was played for the last time for the eighth graders and the second to the last time for the seventh graders. Several of the video segments were the ones from before while others were new. Some memorable moments sprang from this part of the assembly. One such moment was when nearly the entire student audience echoed each time the montage enumerated the clubs. When the clip showed Michael Jordan, most of the audience cheered. The students kept laughing if they saw something funny in a video or two.

CoCA Changes in List, Orientation and Choices

    Josh Guinto & Luis Orca

The middle schools Co-Curricular Activity orientation has changed over the years in many different ways, but as a writer who has just entered the Middle School, it is amazing how there can be so many activities to choose from as an activity for the school year. Mrs. Gargaritano has even added new activities for us to enjoy. There are more clubs for us new entries into the Middle School, like Shadow Play, Football and Track & Field. We did not have these clubs back in the past like in Grade 3. This year, clubs are definitely more fun, more exciting. There are so many they will not even fit in this article. The clubs are more challenging and better with friends. And as amazing as it is, it is also very hard to pick a club with these many choices. But whichever you have chosen, being in a club that you have never been to before will give you many chances of learning, making new friends and experiencing the uncommon. More and more students are now satisfied with their clubs that they are in. No more clubs will be overloaded and teachers can relax a little making sure everyone has a good time in their Co-Curricular Activities.

PARENT & SON GROUP BUILD AND CONTEST HOBBYCRAFT DAYMr. Brett Medel

Last Oct 19, 2013, the Hobbycraft Club of AGS (for Grades 4,5,6,7,8) hosted a whole day event where parent and son had the opportunity to learn from members of the IPMS (International Plastic Modelers Society) the basics of building and painting a scale model . My son (Basti T. Medel, 5-Bagobo) had been looking forward to that event so he prepared days in advance for all his tools and materials that he would use for that day, including his partly assembled 1/35 scale model tank German Pz.Kpfm KV-2 754 (r). In the first part of the program, the expert hobbyists shared with us the techniques on performing the a thin layer of base paint of dessert yellow onto the tank. Then he showed how camouflage colors like olive drab and red brown were used. Then how the finishing techniques like washing using black paint, and dry brush using silver paint were applied to give the shadow, aging, rusty, and steel effects. The tank was actually painted using air brush throughout, while for the washing and dry brush techniques, cotton buds and thin brush were used, respectively. Throughout the session, it was my son who was doing the actual painting while I was only there beside him to do the demo again, and coached him throughout when he was getting out of hand, for instance, when too much paint was applied on one area, or when the handling of the spray paint was not correct (in terms of distance to the tank and angle of spray) or when camouflage color was lacking in certain areas. I was also his critique where I made sure I give my comments every step of the way. As soon as we finished, Basti submitted his work. His tank, together with the tanks of the other Grade 5 boys, were lined up in one row for judging. My son and I were restless. We didnt have any idea if his work had a chance of getting a prize because all the works of the Grade 5 students were awesome. Then the awarding came, the third prize was called, then the second as we were waiting for the first prize winner, I was looking at him from afar, giving him my assurance that everything would be ok even if he didnt win and that his work was already a masterpiece an artwork that one can be proud of. To our delight and surprise, his name was called for the first prize award!!! We were both jumping with joy and could not believe at all, that his work bested the other grade 5 works I was so proud of him, I see the joy in his face when he received the first prize trophy and award. At the end of the program, together with his mom, we went home very happy. It was a wonderful bonding experience with my son-- a fun and memorable day for both of us. We both learned a lot from the event. We went to SM Marikina where I treated him to KFC for a job well done! I am so proud of my son!

Proceeds of the feast will go to the Social Action Fund, which funds the projects of the Bigay Puso program. During the fair, the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Blue Eagle Gym was presided over by His eminence Cardinal Chito Tagle. After the mass, he also blessed the Heritage Room which housed an exhibit in line with the Year of Faith. The three-day fair also featured a magic show, singing competition, lego-making contest, and a musical variety show. The theme this year, Arangkada Atenista, Diyos, at Pamilya calls on Ateneans to boldly go and proceed. Unlike the previous years where students named the theme of the fair, it became a contest for the family of the students. St. Ignatius Mass, Induction of AGSCOM & Class Officers

Sean Gayod, Miguel Cadag & Raj Tamayo

The Mass of St. Ignatius and Induction of Class Officers happened last July 30, 2013. The backdrop was made by Grade 6 students. The induction happened, as usual towards the end of the mass. This time Grades 4, 5 and 6 together with the Junior High School attended the Mass and Induction Ceremonies. Some of the Class Officers parents were also in attendance, seemingly very proud of their sons who would be inducted to serve their fellow Ateneans for the rest of the school year. The Ateneo Boys Choir and Knights of Christ were a big part of the mass. But, most of all it was the effort of the faculty, staff and priest presider which made the mass very meaningful. The mass was mostly about who St. Ignatius was, why he is our patron Saint and what the Ignatian Spirit is all about; and Magis is not just about being the best among the rest, but simply being the best you can be as a person. The Class Officers hope to be able to live by this since they took an oath that tells all of their classmates and fellow students that they will ensure that they will do their responsibilities and promises that they have told they would do. They also promised that they would do something about the issues that the school is facing. They were voted and trusted by the students of the Ateneo Grade School. The Junior High School and the Middle School of the AGS both helped each other to make a good and responsible AGSCOM Council and Class Officers. The Induction of the AGSCOM and Class Officers is not only to take an oath but it is also important so the students of the AGS can gain more trust and belief to the AGSCOM and the officers.

Miting de Avance, AGSCOM CampaignJag Delfin

The Miting de Avance and the AGSCOM campaign this school year have been great and fun. The Miting de Avance helped the Middle School students of Ateneo know who to vote for. During this event, the two parties (Men of Steel and A-Clean) worked hard to convince the audience to vote for them and not the others. The campaign came right after. This is when the candidates try to make the people want to vote for them more. The main objectives of the parties are the same: get people to vote for them and by winning, eventually be of service to the student body. They tried signs, cheers, and flags to win the hearts of their schoolmates. They made promises that they would do if they win the election. They made speeches that inspired people to voting for them. This is basically what they did in the Miting de Avance and their campaign. In this campaign, the power isnt really with the candidates but really with the people and their final decision during the elections.

    Kikoy Bautista & Kimi Vallente

We have been asked many times how life is like as an AGSCOM Executive Council member. A lot of people feel that the task is very hard especially because we are the first Executive Council members who are in Grade 6. Our answer to that question is: NO! It is not hard to do things you really love. Even though we may have so much work to do, we still love what we do. As Executive Council members, we constantly face challenges like balancing our schedules, keeping our grades up and the like. But, if you look challenge in the eye, you will know that you can face him/it/her/whatever. Life is never easy, but we could always make the most of it like were going to die young. For our various projects, we have too many of them to count. However, we must think and make time for these because they are for the benefit of all. Being the two first

Executive Council members of Grade 6 is the pressure of pleasing our big brothers in the JHS and our fellow students from the MS. Lastly, one of our biggest hills to climb or the widest sea to cross or the vastest land to conquer is to fulfill our duties for the Greater Glory of God. Remember this: we have to make sacrifices in our lives like: writing this article. For our younger brothers and batchmates, we would like you to carry around this information in your mind about our lives as Executive Council members so that if you decide to become a student leader in the future, you will remember these two young gentlemen who strived hard to achieve their goal. For our older brothers, we would like you to know that we Executive Council members from Grade 6 are working hard to fulfill our duties for the benefit of our school.

    AGS CELEBRATES NATIONAL BOOK WEEK

    Paeng Evangelista

The Ateneo de Manila Grade School observed the National Book Week with a circus themed celebration entitled, Come one, Come All! With reading we soar that aims to promote reading. Katigbak Educational Media Center (KEMC) Coordinator Pam Albaa said that the week-long celebration was all about fun and at the same time inculcating the value of reading to the students. The KEMC prepared a number of activities which range from exhibits, contests, trivia games, and classroom-to-classroom visits. There were also activities like origami and foldabots making and a book fair that sold books from different publications. Albaa said that this year, they wanted to veer away from the serious classroom set-up and let the students enjoy reading and come to the library. Hopefully, they will adopt this habit eventually, she said. The KEMC also holds constantly a media instruction program once a month to teach the students appropriate to their grade level.

AGS & AJHS CELEBRATE ANNUAL BUWAN NG WIKAPaeng Evangelista The Ateneo de Manila Grade School (AGS) and Junior High School (AJHS) recently celebrated the annual Buwan ng Wika with the theme Filipino Araw-Araw to encourage students to speak the national language on a daily basis. Filipino Coordinator of the Middle School Ms Maricar Kristin R. Panganiban said that they want to teach the kids to speak Filipino everyday and not just every August (Buwan ng Wika) because they are Filipinos, after all. Gustong iparating na hindi lang dapat tuwing Buwan ng Wika ginagamit ang wikang Filipino, ngunit dapat araw-araw dahil mga Filipino naman tayo., Panganiban said. The theme Filipino Araw-Araw was chosen by both the Grade School and the Junior High School according to the theme Wika sa Daang Matuwid provided by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF). During the month-long celebration, several activities were done in order to showcase the culture of the Filipinos: Pinto Filipino, Tanghal tanghalian, Pinoy ang dating, Parada ng Sikat, Bugso, etc. Popular Filipino festivals like the Higantes and traditions such as the marching band during fiestas were observed in the celebration. Filipino comic strips (in the form of a tarpaulin) were also posted around the campus of the AGS and the AJHS to introduce this popular Filipino form of literature during the time. It featured artists such as Larry Alcala who was dubbed as the Dean of Filipino Cartoonists and Manix Abrera whos Kikomachine comic strips are very popular today. According to Panganiban, it is the objective of the Filipino Department in the Middle School for kids to like the Filipino language. This is due to the fact that most students use English as their first language. Pangarap ng mga guro sa Filipino na sana ay hindi na kinakailangan magcelebrate ng Buwan ng Wika tuwing Agosto dahil dapat talaga, all throughout the year. Yun nga lang, dahil sa tipo ng paaralan na mayroon tayo, ang first language ng mga bata ay Ingles, she said. Currently, only 2 subjects are taught in the Grade School using Filipino as medium. These are Araling Panlipunan at Filipino.

Gr. 2 Honors' AssemblyMs. Maita Madrono

Last July 2 and 3, 2013, the grade two level had their Honors Assembly at the Singson Hall. The event was graced by the Ateneo Grade School administrators, namely, Fr. Norberto Maria Bautista, S.J., our Headmaster, Mrs. Josephine Martinez, the Assistant Headmaster for Primary School, Ms. Remedios Rivera, the Assistant Headmaster for Formation, and Mr. Jervy Robles, the Assistant Headmaster for Student Affairs. The administrators were ably assisted by the Grade Two Grade Level Coordinator, Mrs. Maria Estrella Fatima Celestino and the Grade Two Academic Coordinator, Mrs. Guada Sol Barcelon. We were fortunate to have Ms. Remedios Rivera as our inspirational speaker. She talked about the importance of having time for God, time for self, and time for others. Time for others was made more concrete by the story of St. Martin and the beggar, which the boys listened to very attentively.Following the Honors Assembly was the launching

of the Bigay Puso program. The presentation by Mrs. Celestino showed the boys how the coins they save and donate in the Bigay Puso can help feed children in their partner school, the Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School.

Gr. 3 Honors' AssemblyMs. Naomi Mabasa

It is a yearly tradition to celebrate the Honors Assembly at the beginning of the school year. The Honors Assembly recognizes outstanding students who have strived for excellence in the field of academics and sports. It helps to inspire all students to do magis in everything they do. For the students, recognizing their accomplishments helps them to appreciate more their own capabilities and potentials. This will equip them to be more responsible and competitive students. For this school year, the Honors Assembly was held at the Singson Hall last July 2 and 3, 2013. Ms. Sunshine Cantilang, Grade Level Coordinator, Mrs. Millette G. Balisi, Academic Coordinator, Mr. Jervy Robles, AHSA, Mrs. Josie Martinez AHAA-PS and Fr. Norberto Bautista, SJ, Headmaster, were all there to witness the assembly. Mrs. Ma. Victoria Dimalanta, AGS-FMO Head, was the guest of honor and she gave an inspirational message. She stressed on sacrifice, prayer and Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam. She mentioned that even young Grade 3 boys can set the world on fire. The boys and the parents listened very well to the encouraging words of Mrs. Dimalanta. As a teacher and for the parents, we find joy and pride to see the fruits of labors of these young gentlemen. This will continue us to support and help student to hone their talents and abilities. And to continuously remind them to share these achievements with others - to be men for others. Congratulations to all the awardees. Fly and soar high!

Anton Cabalza in The Grade 6 Honors AssemblyMs. Mara Melanie D. Perez

I am so inspired by the life of service and excellence of my angelic & brilliant student, Anton Cabalza. Hence, I made an introduction for him when he became our guest speaker during the Reading of Honors. This was read by Mrs. Castillo, our Grade Level Coordinator.

    START:

Young gentlemen of Grade 6, as the graduating batch, I expect that you now know all the Jesuit mottos. Now, lets have a simple game. Who among you know how to play Whats the Word: 4 Pics 1 Word? To make this part of our program more exciting, I want you to participate in guessing the words. I will show you the pictures with letter clues and I will give you three seconds to think of the answer. The words are all in Latin. After I count to three, I expect all of you to say the answer. Is that clear?

    Alright, lets start. First word.

I would like to start with that word to introduce our young guest speaker today. St. Ignatius inspires us to live the magis, to develop our individual capacities to its fullest. And like all our awardees here dressed in their gala uniform, our speaker also went up this stage every year for being a consistent honor studentFirst Honor student most of the time! And presently, he is a Junior student at the Philippine Science High School where he is also a consistent

Directors Lister, truly living the magis in each and every subject.

Now, lets go to the next pictures.

Jesuit schools students are known for their excellence in communication skills, both in speaking and in writing, and also for their heightened intellectual

formation. Our guest speaker, at a very young age is well known for his supremacy in reasoning reflectively and critically. During all his middle school years, he manifested his writing skills in The Eaglet, our official school paper, and served as the Editor-in-Chief when he was in Grade 7. He keeps winning several awards because of his excellence in speaking and writing. He is also the

youngest winner in the Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature!

Are you ready for Round 3?

In English, it means a sound mind in a sound body. Our guest is one of the youngest Mensans whose IQ is in the top 2% of the population! But hes not contented in only developing his mental capacities. He is also a 10K runner, a certified scuba

    diver, and a karate medalist!

Alright, lets go the the 4th set of pictures.

Ateneans are known as persons for others. Our guest speaker always look for ways to care and be of service to others. When he was in AGS, he tutored his classmates who were having difficulties in their academic subjects. He also actively participated in Gawad Kalinga and Bigay Puso projects. When he was in Grade 6, Metro Manila experienced the onslaught of the Typhoon Ondoy and their house was submerged in deep flood. But instead of wallowing in self pity, he was one of the first students who volunteered in the Task Force Ondoy to help other victims like him. He is also a man for the nation as part of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting or PPCRV. In Philippine Science, he is presently very active in their Big Brother Sister Circle, which is like an elite organization for junior and senior students who act as Kuyas and Ates to the freshmen and sophomore students.

Now, who among you here have pets? Our speaker doesnt stop in just caring for other people because he also cares for animals. But he doesnt just care for his own pets because he looks after other animals as well as part of the Junior Cadets Volunteer Program of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society or PAWS.

I know you enjoy playing this game but were down to our last set of pictures.

These words are inscribed on our school seal. Our speaker is the epitome of this Ignatian value Light in the Lord. As the President of all his 4 classes in Middle School and the Confedaration of Ateneo

Middle School Publications, his classmates and clubmates look up to him for inspiration. He showed them the right path to success and holiness as the leading angelic and brilliant student of his

batch. He also holds several leadership positions in Philippine Science High School. When he graduated in AGS, he received the Jordan Award not just because of his academic excellence, but also because of his outstanding social commitment and spiritual formation.

Truly, he is one of the best graduates of Ateneo and were all in for a treat today. Without further ado, please join me in welcoming Master Anton Raphael S. Cabalza.

Speech of Mr. Lorenzo Gabriel D. QuiogueYou might expect me to talk about discipline or hard work or being responsible, but Id like to focus on a much simpler concept, one that weve all experienced: love.To explain what I mean by love, Id like to tell a story, the story of one
