*The investigation

*What happens to the temperature as a liquid changes state to form a solid?

*You will be provided with a molten sample of a chemical called stearic acid and a thermometer.

*You have to record and preset the data that you collect to try to explain what happens when the stearic acid changes state.

WARNING! The stearic acid will be hot when you take it out of the water bath – handle it with careWork in groups of 2/3

*Processing the results

*The raw results that you recorded (time and temperature) can be plotted as a graph using Excel.

*Can you describe the features of the graph, what are the explanations for what is happening at each stage of the graph?

*Success Criteria

*What do you think the success criteria for the presentation of the processed results of the investigation should be?

*Planning an investigation

*Use the internet to help you plan an investigation/demonstration that shows the movement of particles.

*You will have to photograph/video your investigation and provide a brief explanation of what is happening.

*A full and detailed set of equipment requests and safety instructions will be needed for the technicians.

*Presenting the investigation

*A written version of the method that you used, plus where you obtained it from (full URL) including equipment list. – detail any changes you made

*Safety notes/Risk Assessment

*Your visual evidence for particle movement + written or audio track explaining what is happening.

*Evaluation
