API Ballot for Sequence VIII VGRA Read Table Recommendation At the October 11, 2018 Lubricants Standards Group (LSG) Meeting the Lubricants Group reviewed the BOI/VGREA Task Force Proposal 2 for VGRA for ASTM D6278 as an alternative to Stripped Viscosity in L-38/Seq. VIII. Proposal 2 is a revision to Table F-2 with the addition of a new Table-F-2A—L-38/Sequence VIII and ASTM D6278 to meet stay in grade Requirements.

Attachment 1, page 4, is a copy of the BOI/VGRA Proposal 2 for VGRA for ASTM D6278 as an alternative to Stripped Viscosity in L-38/Seq. VIII. The Motion to Ballot is on Page 5. Background Information can be found Attachment 1, pages 7-10. After review and discussion, the LSG agreed by voice vote to Ballot Proposal 2 for VGRA for ASTM D6278 as an alternative to Stripped Viscosity in L-38/Seq. VIII.

Proposal 1:Sequence VIII BOI Read Table Recommendation

E.2.2.4.6 For CRC L-38/Sequence VIII tests required for interchanging the base stock, specific requirements are given in Table E-x. Note: These BOI Guidelines apply only to bearing weight loss.

Table E-x—CRC L-38/Sequence VIII Tests Required for Interchanging the Base Stock

Table E-xA—L-38/Sequence VIII and ASTM D6278 stay in grade Requirements

Data to support stay in grade performance shall be provided by the licensee for active API Service Categories and Classifications and ILSAC Standards. Either CRC L-38/Sequence VIII or ASTM D6278 (30 passes) may be used to support stay in grade requirements, where the limits are listed in Table E-xA.

Table F-2—Groups I, II, III and IV Viscosity Read-Across: L-38/Sequence VIII Tests

Notes:1. X = read-across is permitted for the viscosity grades identified based on data and some applications of the technical

principles approved by API BOI/VGRA Task Force and API Lubricants Group.2. A dash (—) means that read-across is not permitted; NA = not applicable.3. New viscosity grades and associated read-across are allowed if the requirements described in F.1.3 are met.4. Tested formulations containing Group V stocks must contain an equal amount of the same Group V base stock (e.g., ester)

in the finished oil blend for application of viscosity grade read-across.5. The read-across in this table Table F-2 applies only to bearing weight loss. and piston varnish. All multigrade oils must stay

in grade for 10 hours in the L-38/Seq. VIII tests (see ILSAC GF-1, GF-2, GF-3, GF-4 and GF-5). Data to support stay in grade “read-across” shall be provided by the licensee for API Service Categories SN, SM, SL, SJ, SH, and CG-4 and ILSAC GF-1, GF-2, GF-3, GF-4, and GF-5 oils (0W-XX, 5W-XX, 10W-XX).

6. The guidelines in this table apply only to bearing weight loss. All multigrade oils must meet the requirements of Table F-2A. stay in grade.for 10 hours. Data to support stay in grade read across shall be provided by the licensee for active API Service Categories and ILSAC Standards. ASTM D 6278 (30 passes) may be used to support stay in grade requirements, where the following limits must be met at 100 °C: SAE XW-20 5.6 cSt minimum, XW-30 8.5 cSt minimum, XW-40 11.5 cSt minimum, and XW-50 15.0 cSt minimum.

MotivationCurrent VGRA Read Table

• SAE 20 limits redefined with addition of SAE 16 grade• Desire to include SAE 60

Relationship Between D6278 and Seq. VIII• The D6278 30 cycle sheared viscosity bench test offers a cost effective alternative to the 10 hour

stripped viscosity from a Seq. VIII for BOI/VGRA• Addition data supplied by several parties to original data set (ca 2003) to extend viscosity range• Two regression lines through the data
