Editorial

Growth of knowledge based sector is measured by business intensity and momentum of innovation ecosystem. Wealth creation, capital generation, human resource, employment Investment, turn over, technology, knowledge products are, natural and much needed output from such sector and are the barometer of business.

And lot is happening on all of these fronts in Gujarat in Biotechnology! The conference, the seminar, the publications, the investments…All this was witnessed during Recent event of Vibrant Gujarat - Global investor summit 2015, which showcased the mosaic growth of biotechnology in the state.

MoU signed for Biotechnology investment and strategic partnerships, reected the continuing business growth, Biotechnology Exhibition Stall provided visual displays of acheievement,

stSeminar on “reshaping Human life” and “Innovation – Torch bearer of 21 century, provided Business -Technology conuence of national -International stakeholders and New Publication provided insight of spread and spectrum of Gujarat Biotechnology.

The status of Gujarat biotechnology, w.r.t growth, number of new Biotech companies, scale of investments, overall Biotech turn over, products, exports, was captured in the 3 documents, developed in-house and released on the occasion. An Exclusive product - demystifying biotechnology instruments, for Kids, was also released on the day.

The journey of technology driven business continues … in holistic manner,- Slow and Steady, Step by Step. As we complete a decade of efforts of building Biotechnology platform, it is time to build towers- one by one, year by year…

It is time to sit up and take note—of the environment built, and capabilities developed,. It is also the time to ponder and prepare ourselves to sustain this growth and even better it.

Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit

Vibrant Gujarat is the name given to a biennial investors' summit held by the

government of Gujarat in Gujarat, India. The event is aimed at bringing together business leaders, investors, corpora�ons, thought leaders, policy and opinion makers; the summit is adver�sed as a pla�orm to understand and explore business opportuni�es in the State of Gujarat.

The 7th Vibrant Gujarat Summit was planned from 11th to 13th January 2015 at Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India. The Summit was inaugurated by Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi who had created and conceptualized the summit. Last summit which was held in 2013 gave an example of a visionary approach of the Government of Gujarat towards inclusive and sustainable development. The sixth edi�on of the summit provided enormous prospects to the State to display its strengths, progressive stand, ini�a�ves taken to improve governance, investor friendly climate and art & culture of Gujarat.

Six summits held so far have been a resounding success that immensely contributed to transforma�on of Gujarat into a "Global Business Hub". The brand "Vibrant Gujarat" began as an "investors' summit" has now evolved into an ideal pla�orm for knowledge sharing, social and business transforma�on. The Summit gradually evolved into a round-the-year investment promo�on exercise with events planned and executed well in advance of the main Summit. A trade show “Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade show 2015” with an exhibi�on area of over 100,000 sq. meters was also held from 7th -13th January 2015.

The prime focus of Government of Gujarat is Inclusive development and the key areas for development iden�fied included: Innova�on, Sustainability, Youth & Skill Development, Knowledge Sharing and Networking. Also, this Summit is an ideal convergence for other states and other countries to showcase their strengths, highlight business opportuni�es, facilitate knowledge dissemina�on etc. It also provides an a�rac�ve opportunity to its par�cipants to understand the poten�al of Gujarat in various sectors. Besides, it provides pla�orm to interact with policy makers, industry leaders, and renowned academicians from all over the world.

The one day interna�onal event was aimed at a�rac�ng investments in Gujarat and fostering a holis�c innova�on ecosystem in the field of Biotechnology and Life Sciences. Apart from dignitaries who graced the inaugural session, there were over 25 dis�nguished and renowned speakers and panel members compris ing of senior representa�ves of Government of India, Industry representa�ves, Biotechnology & Life Sciences experts and academicians. It saw par�cipa�on from over 500 delegates including Government Officials, Captains and Representa�ves of Biotechnology and L i fe S c i e n c e I n d u s t r y, R e s e a r c h e r s a n d Academicians, Students, Representa�ves from Allied Industries, Biotechnology Entrepreneurs, Consultants and Subject Experts, Private Equity and Venture Capitalists.

Shri Govindbhai Patel, chief guest addressed the gathering said that the Government is bent about development of Biotechnology(BT) in the state and that BT is an important tool not only for economic growth and progress but a l so for soc ia l development. Ci�ng the State Government's slogan of “Sabka Saath Sab ka Vikas“ the Hon Minister highl ighted that BT progress is based on development of skills, knowledge sharing and awareness. Technology, research and development can become key contributors of development for all

and progress for all that can provide social benefits.

Shri Sreeshan Raghavan in his inaugural addressed the high poten�al of BT growth in India and its contribu�on to the world. He congratulated Government of Gujarat and GSBTM for its ini�a�ves in this sector that will reap long term benefits to the state. According to Mr. Raghvan, the State government needs to take up relevant policy interven�ons and urged the stakeholders from industries and researchers to become more ac�ve in seeking infrastructure/ different research grants and incen�ves provided by DBT, DST, GOI and BIRAC (a body set up by GOI to fund innova�ons and lead to affordable product genera�on). Intensive focus on Bio Safety and GM crops as future areas can reshape human lives through BT.

Shri S.J. Haider, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology in his address stressed on the importance of collabora�on and public private partnership in the area of development of skills, developing technology and building awareness. He highlighted that Poten�al applica�ons in sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, environment and innova�on Biotechnology has become a strong tool to reshape human lives. The state Government is taking appropriate steps for policy planning & incen�ves, human resources development, promo�on of BT Industries, BT Industrial parks, BT entrepreneurship and awareness building.

Shri Akshay Saxena, Mission Director, Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission gave a pen picture of the overall Biotechnology industry in Gujarat and its achievements. According to Survey done by GSBTM he stated that Gujarat has over 50 patents in BT, from 54 organiza�ons with 1000 crore revenue in 2004 to 154 organiza�ons with 4000 crore revenue in 2014, biotechnology sector has grown tremendously. Today the focus is on technological solu�ons and one can capitalize on available technologies. He avowed that biotechnology needs pla�orm of research and academic ins�tu�on which can generate high quality manpower. Since Gujarat lacks such ins�tutes, GSBTM has taken ini�a�ve of developing centres like bio Diversity Gene Bank, Genomics facili�es, bio-informa�cs, Stem Cell research and training, gene�c diagnos�c centre

which will evolve into centre of excellence and create catchment of skilled manpower, research and technologies. He emphasized that if pool of young talent has to be groomed, facili�es are to be provided and society must be prepared to invest money �me and resource in biotechnology.

Biotechnology- Changing the Face of healthcareTechnologies within reach: Technologies on the horizon

This session was moderated by Dr. Rashmi Barbhaiya. Prof. Dr. John Burn from U.K. and Prof. Ken-ichi Arai from Tokyo delivered their speeches during the session. Dr. Rashmi Barbhaiya in his address stated that such an event on Bio Invest in Gujarat is important and focus on affordability, accessibility and environment can make a big difference.

Gujarat is ahead of several state in India in field of BT at the 4th place and can further its posi�on by shi�ing focus from short term to long term approach, by changing our mindsets and by crea�on of an ecosystem that promotes academic and research ins�tutes of repute. He emphasized “Bet on young Talent and you will not be disappointed”.

Dr. Hans Soderlund, in his address men�oned that the applica�ons of BT have been primarily focused on health, Agriculture, food applica�ons for environment sectors and we should now focus on industrial BT. He emphasized that the basis for future work in BT will rest on 3 pillars which are sense & hypothesis, diagnosis, building instruments to measure & analysis.

A theme based seminar, organized as a part of Vibrant

Gujarat Global Summit 2015 on January 12 & 13 2015.

The three day long Vibrant Gujarat Summit in Mahatma Mandir, G a n d h i n a g a r c o n c l u d e d

successfully with many high lights. Innova�on: Torch Bearer of 21st Century was a theme based seminar organized during Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit. The core idea behind the seminar was to a�ract investment in various industries. Pharmaceu�cal and Healthcare industry was one of the focus area during seminar. Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission - GSBTM is a state nodal agency working under Department of Science a n d Te c h n o l o g y . To p r o m o t e Biotechnology based industry in the state is one of the important mandate of GSBTM. MOUs for investment in Biotechnology sector by different industries as well as MOUs for strategic partnership were also signed during this event on January 12, 2015.

The two day seminar was seized at Seminar Room No. 6 of Mahatma Mandir. It divided into various sessions. Chief Minister of Gujarat State, Smt. Anandiben Patel along with Shri Govindbhai Patel, Honorable Chief Minister of State for Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat, Mr. Chris Alexander, Honorable Minister for Ci�zen and Immigra�on, Canada and other dignitaries remained present on the occasion.

First day of seminar started with Inaugural Session by convivial guests and premise introduc�on was given. Shri Patel, Honorable Chief Minister of State for Science and Technology, Government of Gujarat delivered speech based upon Gujarat State Innova�on Council and its focus areas. Keynote Address was delivered by Mr. Chris Alexander, Honorable Minister for Ci�zen and Immigra�on, Canada. Special address was delivered by Shri Y.S. Chowdary, Honorable Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Science, Government of India.

Session 2 It was based upon Innova�on for Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth theme. Session started with an address by Mr. Kenneth Tai, Chairman, Jasper Display Corp., &Co-Founder Acer, Taiwan. He delivered his speech on 'Opportuni�es India and Taiwan - Pixel as a pla�orm'.

Second address was delivered by Dr. Sameer Bhramachari, Former Director General of the Council of Scien�fic & Industrial Research (CSIR). He s p o ke u p o n ' I n n o va � o n fo r S u s t a i n a b l e Development and Inclusive Growth, OSDD: Open Innova�on for Global Good(Scaling of Innova�on through Crowd Sourcing)'. Third address was delivered by Mr. Adam Fenech, Ph.D. Canada, Nobel Laureate for Climate Change. He spoke about 'Using innova�ve new technologies for mo�va�ng communi�es to adapt to the impacts of global climate change'.

Session went forward by showcasing AV film on Innova�on, then a�er Launch of Gujarat State Innova�on Portal by By Hon Minister of State Govt of India and Hon CM Gujarat. Honorable Chief Minister of Gujarat launched Centre on IPR at GNLU and AV film on COE-IPR. Chief Minister also delivered Special address on this event.

Session 3Third session was based upon theme of fostering an Innova�on Ecosystem, where in four speakers delivered their speech. First speaker Mr Arya Kohavi,

Founder, Watergen, Israel spoke upon 'Innova�on in drinking water and Dehumidifica�on'. Second speech was delivered by Mr. S K. Mishra, CEO, Brahmos. Third speech was delivered by Mr. Mark Wilson, Blackberry. He spoke upon 'Fostering an Innova�on Ecosystem in High-tech'. Fourth speaker Dr. (Prof) Anil Gupta, Professor IIMA & Founder Society for Research and Ini�a�ves for Sustainable Technologies and Ins�tu�ons(SHRISTI) and Honeybee Network, delivered speech upon 'Autopoeisis model of empathe�c innova�on at grassroots: frugal, affordable and circular'. During this day various MOUs were also signed. Gujarat

State Biotechnology Mission – GSBTM handled MOUs for investment and Strategic Partnerships in Biotechnology sector. MOUs for various purpose were signed in the presence of Honorable Chief Minister and other dignitaries. MOUs were signed between various Entrepreneurs and investors of companies and Government officials of Gujarat State including Sector Specialists of GSBTM and Honorable Secretory of Department of Science and Technology.

Around 60 MOUs were signed on the day with a

proposed investment of around 3230 thousand Crore and proposed employment of around 7216. participated in Vibrant Gujarat Global Trade Show 2015

GSBTM showcased Biotechnology segment and initiatives taken for making Gujarat a Biotechnology destination, in Global Trade Show 2015 organized during Vibrant Gujarat event.

Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission – GSBTM is a state nodal agency working under Department of Sc ience and

Technology, Government of Gujarat for the development and promo�on of Biotechnology sector in Gujarat. Gujarat Government has iden�fied Biotechnology as most poten�al tool for development, social up-li�ment and progress. GSBTM promotes, supports and facilitates the development of biotechnology in the state by promo�ng research and development in the field of biotechnology, by genera�ng the quality human resource, development of biotechnology industries, promo�on and support and facilitate the overall

development of Biotechnology in the State.

GSBTM also aims to provide ins�tu�onal, legal, financial and policy support, facilitate networking among stakeholders at Regional, Na�onal and Interna�onal level, facilitate the infrastructure development and R&D ac�vi�es, create scien�fic awareness, sensi�za�on, socio-ethical acceptance and adop�on to the poten�als and applica�on of biotechnology. GSBTM par�cipated and show casedthe work and ini�a�ves at Vibrant Gujarat Trade Show 2015. It is a Global level trade show organized at Exhibi�on Ground, Near Mahatma Mandir, Gandhinagar from 7 to 13 January 2015.

Interna�onal Trade Show and a Global Business Summit provides an opportunity and pla�orm by showcasing over 25 business sectors and biotechnology is one of them. Over 2000 companies par�cipated and various State Government ini�a�ves par�cipated in this event. It was es�mated that over 2 million visitors visited trade show.

The exhibi�on was divided into 15 different halls, dedicated to different sectors. The stall of GSBTM was set in the exhibi�on hall number 11. A unique and innova�ve approach was given in design and showcasing the works of GSBTM. The total area of the stall was divided in to three major segments with two entry and exit ways. The front of GSBTM was designed with big fabricated form of ini�als of

organiza�on 'GSBTM' and as per the logo of GSBTM DNA model with ligh�ng was set behind. Side panels were showcasing logos of various biotechnology companies in Gujarat. One segment of stall was showcasing a�rac�vely in-house designed power point based presenta�on which was displayed on touch sensi�ve computer screen where person can sit and explore it. This presenta�on was about various cells and ini�a�ves of GSBTM. Arrangement for si�ng and discussing were also made at stall in this segment.

Center por�on of the stall was exhibi�ng various biotechnology products already in the market, including BT Co�on seeds, fer�lizers, bio pes�cides, vaccines etc. This por�on was also had big size LED screen showing in-house designed presenta�on showing various works and ini�a�ves taken by GSBTM. Different illuminated back lit panel standouts were showcasing various aspects of Biotechnology and its scenario in Gujarat as well as informa�on, aim and objec�ves and ini�a�ves of GSBTM.

One area of the stall was designed as recep�on area, si�ng area and one television showing virtual 4D walk through experience of 'Savli Bio-incubator' at EPIP/CFC building, Savli GIDC, Vadodara developed by Gujrat State Biotechnology Mission (GSBTM) and with financial support of Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council [BIRAC] of DBT, Govt. of India. This virtual experience has been developed by undergraduate students of IIT, Gandhinagar. They have created pla�orm technology for crea�ng high quality 3 D virtual content for real places & real events to digitally showcase them along with an addi�onal layer of informa�on (hence, 4 D) and provide viewer a virtual experience of physically being there, along with informa�on related to the view. In response to the request from IIT, Gandhinagar and in concurrence to the mandate of the Savli Bio-Incubator, this 4 D technology was validated by crea�ng a 4D Virtual Tour [Screenshots included] of Savli Bio-Incubator including real panoramic images as well as with projected refurbishings.
