The three victims were identified as Sabavat Sali, her daughter S Sirisha, and another person M Bhaskar. Police said that Sabavat wanted to end her daughter’s and her own life as she was unable to tolerate her husband’s torture. Bhaskar was a psychiatric patient. Drive against adulteration In a special drive, city police conducted raids at 13 places in Goshamahal Division of Hyderabad to curb food adulteration and other illegal activities. The police arrested 17 people and seized several items. Raids were conducted on on three ginger and garlic paste manufacturing units, one illegal chocolate manufacturing company, four dairy farms and other food and dry fruit manu- facturing units. Ban on liquor during Bonalu The Hyderabad Commis- sioner of Police in a press note said that all toddy and wine shops, bars in restau- rants (excluding bars in star hotels and registered clubs) within the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunde- rabad will remain closed from 6 am on July 16 to 6 am on July 18 due to Bonalu celebration in city. ‘Warning of no smoking must’ Hyderabad police in a press note reiterated the already issued Ministry of Health and Family Welfare guide- lines for hotels, airports and restaurants asking them to put a board at entrance of smoking area with a message on a white background saying ‘Tobac- co smoking is harmful to your health and health of nonsmokers. Entry of person below 18 years is prohibited’. CRIME FILE Cops thwart suicide bid Hyderabad: Cops probing a racket involved in selling animal skins on the sly, ar- rested 17 people for killing a leopard and trying to sell its skin. A special operation team apprehended the poachers over the weekend under Ghatkesar police limits. The accused have been identified as Anil, Srinivas, Jyothiram and Jagga, among others, are all resi- dents of Islampur village of Nirmal district and belong to the Goud community, who usually hunt wild boars and deer for food. Police said in March last year, they planned to trap an animal by laying iron wire fencing around a pond in the dense forest of Birsaipet. However, they realised the following day that a leopard got electrocuted and died in the trap. “They skinned the leo- pard with knives and left it in the forest for a week to dry,” said Mahesh M Bhagwat, commissioner of police, Ra- chakonda. Later, they contacted another accused Jaithu to sell the skin. Jaithu contacted his rela- tives Manik and Limba to se- arch for customers, and later they contacted other accu- sed in search of a customer who could give a high prize for the skin. For past three months, the accused have been sear- ching for customers at Hyde- rabad for selling the leopard skin for about `20 to 25 lakh, said the police. On Thursday, Rajanarsu, Mujahid, Rajashekar, Zaa- kir, Khaja Pasha and Raju as- ked to get the leopard skin from Manik Rao and Limba Rao for taking it to Hydera- bad to sell. While they were carry- ing the skin towards Hydera- bad in a car, SOT Rachakon- da along with Ghatkesar po- lice, acting on a tip off, stop- ped the vehicle and checked the car. After seizing the skin, the six accused were taken into custody along with six mobile phones and the car. After further investiga- tion, the police along with fo- rest officials arrested the re- maining 11accused. Omer lamented atrociti- es against Muslims both in In- dia and other parts of the world. In May, Mohammed Amir of Islamic Global School of Srina- gar, Jammu & Kashmir, contac- ted Omer asking him to arran- ge accommodation for five members in Hyderabad, who would be visiting to collect do- nations for their school in Sri- nagar. Amir advised Omer, who converted to Islam, to follow the speeches of controversial Zakir Naik and few others on the web and TV. Accordingly, Omer scrupulously followed the advi- ce and became a keen listener to Zakir Naik’ speeches. The accu- sed was arrested after he came under the scanner of Telanga- na counter intelligence. Omer was part of a module and he had a handler named Qahafa Al Hindi. The security agencies are trying to track Al Hindi. Vaman Rao Deshpande owns an agricultural land in Medak district where he has cultivated sugar cane. On No- vember 11, 2015, he claimed that his entire crop was dama- ged owing to improper main- tenance of HT wires passing through his field. He attributed the incident to the poorly kept wires, which he said had resulted in a fire caused due to an electri- cal short circuit. Deshpande stated before the forum that he has regular- ly reminded the officials of the electrical department to rectify the problem but to no avail. While representative of the electricity department, appearing before the bench, denied responsibility for the incident claiming that the ac- cident happened because of the heavy wind, the bench wasn’t convinced. Though it did dismiss the case against the sugar factory — the comp- lainant had also blamed the factory’s employees for not lif- ting the crop over the last one and a half years, despite repe- ated requests — it did find the electricity department re- sponsible for the mishap. The policemen who were escort- ing him stopped him mid- way and shift him to hospi- tal. The accused Sheik Amir, who has been involved in several burglary cases, was brought from jail to appear before the judge as his earli- er judicial remand was com- pleted. After the police pro- duced him before the judge, Amir took out a blade from his pocket and started to in- flict injuries on his face, stomach and hands. It took some time for the policemen to control Amir. Rajendranagar police are still perplexed as to how the accused, who is in judi- cial remand, could have a blade in his possession. “Amir was brought from jail in a vehicle. He might have accidentally stumbled upon the blade when he went to the wash room or in the vehicle. Using that, he started to self inflict him- self,’’ Rajendranagar in- spector Umender told TOI.
