THE TIMES OF INDIA, AHMEDABAD THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 2017 6 TIMES NATION | MUMBAI Panaji: A Vasai family’s dream holiday turned into a nightmare after a petty scuf- fle during breakfast ended in a violent assault with swords and knives around 2km from Goa’s capital of Pa- naji. The narrow and usual- ly calm streets of Merces turned into a battleground on Wednesday as the buslo- ad of tourists fought off four armed men—all with crimi- nal records. Cops have arrested three of the attackers while the fo- urth is on the run. An FIR has been registered at Old Goa police station under In- dian Penal Code sections for attempted murder, wrongful restraint, endangering life or personal safety of others and criminal intimidation. At least 20 people were in- jured, including a five-year- old and one of the accused. While the driver of the Ma- harashtra-registered vehi- cle and two other tourists suf- fered fractures, none of the injuries were critical eno- ugh to require hospitaliza- tion, said police officials. Eyewitnesses said troub- le began at Hotel Cafe Hoble at 9:50am where three of the Vasai residents were having breakfast and Lawrence Di- as, the prime accused, was seated behind them. When the arm of one of the tourists brushed against Dias, an ar- gument ensued and he slap- ped 58-year-old Lahu Ghode- kar. In retaliation, the tou- rists shoved and abused Di- as. “The fist fight was resolved by the hotel mana- ger but the goonda threate- ned to bring his friends,” sa- id a waiter at the cafe. “It was a small issue but he said he would call his friends and show them their place.”Sha- ken over the fist fight, the tou- rists got into their bus as they planned to return to Mum- bai. Police officials, who we- re on site, said Dias along with the three other accused came with a sword and chop- pers to attack the tourists. The four accused have been identified as Vishal Go- latkar, Dias, Suraj Shetye and Sai Kundaikar, who is on the run. “One of the accused snat- ched the bus keys from the driver while the others pel- ted stones on the front glass and windows, causing serio- us injuries to some of the passengers,” said North Goa SP Kartik Kashyap. “The driver was pulled out and all four persons as- saulted him with the inten- tion of killing him,” said Kashyap. The women on the bus tried to intervene, pro- mpting the four accused to them too. “We had said sorry. Why did he have to slap us? Why hit our women? This was our first visit to Goa with our family and we thought it would be safe,” said Amol Ghodekar, one of the tou- rists. Not a single day of spe- cial remission has been awarded to him,” the official said on condition of anonymity. The Bombay HC had on June 12 so- ught justification from the state go- vernment for its de- cision to grant the actor early release from prison. “Cases involving high pro- file inmates are especially sensitive considering in- tense scrutiny they are subjected to. There is no possi- bility that even an iota of favouritism was shown to him,” the official said. A division bench of justices R M Sawant and Sad- hana Jadhav had issued the direction on a public in- terest litigation challenging regular paroles granted to Dutt when he was serving his sentence. Dutt was convicted of possession of an AK rifle, which was part of the consignment used in the 1993 terror attack and was sentenced to five years in jail under the Arms Act. AGENCIES Maha govt defends Dutt’s early release Mumbai: A city hospital has refused to remove a hoarding it put up about cut practice despi- te the Indian Medical Associa- tion’s (IMA) displeasure. The IMA had written to the hospital, asking it to remove the hoarding near the airport that said, ‘Honest Opinion. No Com- mission to Doctor’. Police also suspect the accu- sed made sexual advances befo- re killing her. The building watchman was detained by cops, while the crime branch detained the vic- tim’s friend on Wednesday. But police said the murder does not seem to have been planned. Her parents and her brother had wished her on her birthday on June 5, which she had cele- brated at her home. The grocery shop-owner at Shree Bhairav- nath Society in Andheri (W) sa- id he last saw her around 7pm on June 5, when she purchased milk, buttermilk and a cigaret- te packet. Since then Sumer Chaudhary did not receive any grocery order from her. Police, who are questioning her friends and close relatives too, had found her partly dres- sed body on the bed in a decom- posed state, with a head injury, caused after she was probably attacked with a steel weapon. Her brother Deepak alleged that the accused had stolen all her valuables. “We tried to spe- ak to her on June 12, after we did not receive a call since June 8. Finally, police attended the call and told us about the incident. We cremated her body in And- heri late on Wednesday,” Dee- pak told TOI. Kritika divorced her hus- band five years ago and was not in touch with him since then. She had been struggling in Mumbai for nine years and kept changing her residence. She was at her last address for two years but no other building resi- dents knew about her profes- sion. Some told TOI on Wednes- day that she was rarely seen. She seemed to be out many ti- mes and very few friends visi- ted her. Last month, her mother and brother visited her, they ad- ded. Robber holds up bank with toy gun, flees without cash: An unknown youth tried to rob Central Bank of India’s Ulhasnagar branch using a toy gun. The accused, wearing a helmet, entered the bank and threatened staff with the gun, asking them to hand over all the money. However, when staff said the cashier had already left with the key to the cash locker, the robber fled leaving behind his bag and gun, which was later found to be a toy weapon. Monthly surprise checks to keep school bag weight in limits: Starting this academic year, the school education department will conduct random checks once a month to weigh bags of students in primary sections. According to a government resolution on Wednesday, the checks will be conducted by education officials and a report on it will be submitted to the state before the 15th of the month. BMC chief engineer gets show-cause for water-logging: Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta on Wednesday instructed that a show-cause notice be issued to chief engineer (storm water drains) Laxman Vhatkar after an hour of rain caused severe water-logging at Hindmata in Dadar (E) on Monday night. The action came soon after TOI reported the flooding. MUMBAI MASALA School that was run by Zakir Naik is illegal: Govt Mumbai: India Meteorological De- partment (IMD) officials said Mum- baikars may have to wait till June18- 19 before they can experience a heavy spell of rain again. After a two-day delay in arrival, the pace of the south-west monsoon over Mum- bai seems to have slowed down. No significant rain was record- ed since June13, a day after the onset was declared on June 12. Shubhangi Bhute, from the IMD Mumbai ob- servatory, said, “Such a hiatus after the onset phase of the monsoon does occur. There is a trough from Orissa to Konkan, owing to which the ad- vancement of monsoon over Maha- rashtra itself has slowed down. This trough is expected to move away around June 18-19, after which we can expect rain again.” TNN Post dry day, expect heavy rain after Sunday: IMD Thane: Two autorickshaw drivers were nabbed early on Wednesday for allegedly mo- lesting and assaulting a 23-year-old woman last week. The duo—Santosh Lokhande (38) and La- hu Ghogre (49) who have faced arrests in the past—were traced by Thane police following an unprecedented manhunt and confirmation of their identities by the survivor. Madhukar Pan- dey, joint commissioner of police, announced that the case, which had sent shockwaves in Thane, has been cracked. The duo is believed to have confessed to the crime and reportedly said that they had plotted it all and decided to rob any female passenger who would sit in Ghogre’s vehicle. While Ghogre, a resident of Dynaneshwar Nagar in Wagle Estate, was in the driver’s seat, Lok- hande, a resident of Louis Wadi, pretended to be just another passenger occupying a seat in the share auto. “They claim that their motive was to rob the passenger of her gold chain and other valuables as Lokhande had defaulted on the EMI for his auto loan. Ghogre, too, was in need of money as the two were regular drinkers and blew most of their earnings on alcohol. We are questioning them to find out why did they assault the wom- an passenger and then push her out of the speeding auto,” said an investigating officer. A top police official said the first break- through in the case was a tip-off.
