Use Snow to Clean Oriental Rug?Q: I know it’s a bit late in the season for this one, but when I read your column on cleaning oriental rugs, I had to write. I think you missed it on this one. Soaking and shampooing those area rugs is diffi cult and time-consuming. Water and chemicals rot the webbing. Instead of all that work, try cleaning rugs with snow. That’s right, snow! After a fresh snowfall, vacuum both sides of the rug indoors as you indicated. Then, take the rug outside and lay on a clean patch of snow. Throw snow on top of the rug and sweep off with a broom or brush. Repeat until the snow comes off clean, then fl ip the rug and do the other side. The dirt will pour off using this method. If you live in an area without snow or it’s past snow season, use crushed ice on a deck or clean garage fl oor instead. The rug will not get soaked through, and it looks and smells clean. No chemicals, no taking days to dry. Tell your readers to try it! - Ruth, via e-mail

A: Wow, that’s defi nitely a cool suggestion! I’ve never heard of this method, but then I grew up down south. If anyone else has cleaned an oriental rug in a similar manner, I’d love to hear from you.I suppose the tiny ice particles that make up fallen snow work like scrubbers, getting deeper into the rug’s nap than a brush could and picking up dirt particles. As always, I recommend rug owners doing this for the fi rst time test a small section of the rug or clean a rug that’s not a highly valued antique, for obvious reasons. And afterward, do hang the rug up or lay out to make sure it dries thoroughly.

HOME TIP: When cleaning a stain or spill on carpet or rugs, never rub the spot roughly. Instead, blot up the liquid or cleaning solution with a soft cloth.

I WANT CANDY! (continued):

thousands of Baby Ruth bars, each individually equipped with mini-parachutes, over the city of Pittsburgh.• It would take ninety-fi ve Hershey’s kisses to make one pound.• The word candy comes from the Arabic word qan-di, derived from the Persian qand, meaning sugar.• Outside of America, the English term for candy is sweets, sweeties or lollies.• Almond Joy and Mounds bars were created by Peter Paul Halajan, a candy retailed in New Haven, CT. Although Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Com-pany is now part of the Hershey Company in the U.S., the Peter Paul logo can still be seen on the Almond Joy and Mounds candy bar wrappers.• Hershey’s Kisses, introduced in 1907, were origi-nally wrapped by hand. It wasn’t until the introduc-tion of a wrapping machine that the kisses got their distinctive paper ribbon.• Harry Burnett Reese started working as a dairy-man at Hershey Farms in 1917. He founded the H.B. Reese Company in the basement of his house and it merged with the Hershey Company in 1963. You might have tried some of his candy. He created Re-ese’s Peanut Butter Cups.• Over 8 billion candy hearts are produced in the U.S. each year.• 5th Avenue bars were created by William Luden, founder of Luden’s Cough Drops. The candy bar is

named for the street in Reading, PA where Luden’s Cough Drops were fi rst created.• 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made for Easter each year in the U.S.• U.S. chocolate manufacturers use 3.5 million lbs (1,587,573 kg) of whole milk every day.• The Baby Ruth candy bar was originially intro-duced by the Curtiss Candy Company as Kandy Kake. In 1921 it was renamed and refashioned into Baby Ruth and supposedly named for former Presi-dent Cleveland’s daughter Ruth, though it arrived twenty-four years after Cleveland’s last term and seventeen years after Ruth’s death. Many skeptics believe the more plausible story that it was named for Babe Ruth, who was at the height of his career, and to avoid royalties, the name Baby Ruth was used.• The melting point of cocoa butter is just below 98.6º, which is why chocolate melts in your mouth.• The word chocolates comes from the Aztecs of Mexico and is derived from the native Nahuatl word xocolatl or chocolatl, meaning “food made from caoco seeds”.• Chocolate has been cultivated for at least three millennia in Central America and Mexico, with its earliest documented use around 1100 B.C.• Medical research shows that dark chocolate can help lower high blood pressure.• Joseph Fry molded the world’s fi rst chocolate bar in Bristol, England in 1847.

(standing up to the family)

Dear Dave,I’m 22, and trying to follow your plan to take care of my money. I’m working my way through school. The other day I paid cash for nice little used car. The rest of my fam-ily made fun of me, saying I should have bought a new car. They also think I take out student loans for school. They all have car payments, credit card debt, and things like that. How do you deal with criticism like this, especially from your own family?

LakeishaDear Lakeisha,Criticism is a tough thing to handle at any age, especially when it’s coming from your own family. I’m sure your fam-ily loves you, but I think you have to recognize the fact that when it comes to handling money, they are a dysfunc-tional bunch. This doesn’t make them bad people, and you should still respect and love them, but hooray for you for breaking the mold and showing them there’s a better way!“Those convinced against their will are of the same opin-ion still.” That’s one of my favorite sayings, and it is so true! You, on the other hand, know what you want to ac-complish, and you already know what you’re doing is smart. So, I’d suggest taking the bobble-head approach. Just sit there and nod your head when they start telling you how you should handle your fi nances. You don’t even have to really listen. Then, when they run out of air, go on with your life, follow your excellent plan, and work to-ward your goals. Remember, this isn’t about you, so don’t take it personally. It’s about them, and how little they really know.I can already tell you’re going to be a success, kiddo.

You’ve got a tremendous amount of backbone to go against the current in your family. Just don’t be disre-spectful, and don’t try to talk them into following you. In their minds, you’re just 22-years-old, and you don’t know a thing! Later, if they decide they want to follow you, it will be because they see the stuff you’re doing works! It may not happen for a few years, and it may not happen at all, but if you stay on this path, they’re going to come to you for money one of these days. You can be polite, just say no, and tell them that you’re not going to support their dysfunction. You’ll gain their respect over time. And once they reach that point, they just might be willing to listen to you!

- Dave

(survivor insurance)

Dear Dave,My husband is 30 years old, and already has gone through open heart surgery twice. He has $250,000 in term life insurance, which is all we can afford, but his company started offering survivor insurance. It would provide mon-ey for me and the kids over a period of years until I die or if I get re-married. He makes $60,000 a year, and the insurance only costs about $15 a month. Considering his medical history, what do you think of this idea?

JocelynDear Jocelyn,You guys are awfully young to go through all that and be fi ghting those kinds of medical bills, let alone having to deal with the disease itself. God bless you both. I’m really proud of you, though, for thinking ahead and planning for the future in the midst of such diffi culties.Usually, I’m not a big fan of specialty insurance products, but your case it might be a good idea. It may be the only affordable insurance you can get. You might want to take a look at mortgage life insurance, too. It’s a rip-off most of the time, but it’s usually a guaranteed issue, mean-ing they’ll give it to you regardless of your health situa-tion. Plus, it will pay off your mortgage in the event of his death. Hopefully, you won’t have to cash in anything like that for a long, long time.

Taking Away the Car Keys

We had a tragedy in my area: A gentleman with Alzheimer’s drove his car a long distance, got out and walked in the woods, and was found dead by searchers. He’d had Alzheimer’s for quite a while, but no one had kept him from driving. It’s not easy deciding when to take away the keys. Many of us live in areas that aren’t served by pub-lic transportation, and most of us don’t live in assisted living places with vans that take us shopping and to activities. Then there’s the not-so-small matter of indepen-dence: We seniors don’t want to give up something we’ve done for a long time. Those of us who have a spouse with Alzheimer’s have tough choices to make, and we end up as the “heavy” in the decision.

Heroes Lie Buried in Pauper Graves

It boggles the mind that a Medal of Hon-or recipient could be buried in a pauper’s grave and forgotten. That’s what happened

to Corporal Isaiah Mays, Company B, 24th US Infantry. He was buried in 1925 in a former pau-per’s cemetery in what is now an undeveloped space next to a parking lot at the Arizona State Hospital. It wasn’t until 2001 that he fi nally got his Medal of Honor headstone to replace a plain brick grave marker. Just recently, through the efforts of the Missing in America project, the remains of Mays and two others were to be es-corted by The Old Guard Riders to fi nal resting places at Arlington National Cemetery. All over the Internet are stories of unclaimed cremated remains of veterans. In New Jersey there are more than 900 un-claimed veterans. In New Hampshire last year, the remains of four veterans were buried in the state’s Veterans Cemetery after they’d been stored since 1974. There are at least 40 more. The VA acknowledges the problem right on its

site: “There is a risk that veterans whose remains are unclaimed, and not identifi ed as veterans, will be buried in pau-per graves. We ask for your assistance in help-ing the VA eliminate that risk.”I challenge members of all veterans service or-ganizations to step up and determine whether there are unclaimed remains of veterans in your area. Follow the steps on the VA page below, and make sure that any forgotten vet-erans in your area are buried with dignity and respect. If you need help or advice, contact Missing in America [www.miap.us]. There are groups in nearly every state. At www.vba.va.gov/VBA put “Burial of Un-claimed, Indigent Veterans” in the search box for more information.

In some cases, the state has a say in whether an Al-zheimer’s patient keeps driving. Or a doctor can notify the state.Unfortunately, the more advanced the Alzheimer’s, the more likely the senior is to deny that there’s a problem and continue to drive. You might have to resort to hiding the car keys or removing a part so the car won’t start. If you have a spouse or parent with Alzheimer’s, consid-er whether it’s time for you to take a stand -- and the car keys. Look at the Alzheimer’s Association site [www.alz.org] for information and ideas. For an early Alzheimer’s senior who is still driving, GPS mapping sys-tems in the vehicle can make it easi-er to get from one place to the other. And in the case of the gentleman who was lost in the woods, much time (not to mention his life) could have been saved if there had been a tracking device on his car.

What to Drink When Exercising in the Heat

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am taking my two teenage boys backpacking in the Southwest this August. It will be hot and dry, and I am preparing for those conditions. I need some guidance on what fl uids to drink. I was taught that drinking plain water is the best way to stay hydrated. My older son says his class was told not to drink plain water, because it could cause brain damage. What is this all about? -- F.W.

ANSWER: It’s all about becoming sodium-depleted and having the brain swell as a result. The condi-tion is hyponatremia. It used to be taught that, when exercising in hot weather, people should guzzle water at every op-portunity, even when they don’t feel thirsty. That can be dangerous if the exercise lasts for hours and hours and if the only liquid drunk is water. Too much water dilutes body sodium. That, in turn, can cause brain swelling and, in the extreme, death.

Up-to-date advice is to let thirst be a rough guide for how much liquid you drink. If people are en-gaged in prolonged exercise, it is good to include some salt in the program. Half a teaspoon of salt and half a teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bi-carbonate) in a quart of water can keep body so-dium levels from dropping. For you and your sons, it would be advisable to salt your food and to eat some salty snacks -- another way to ensure body sodium doesn’t bottom out.Hyponatremia is uncommon. Dehydration is com-mon. For most, drinking water as a replacement fl uid in hot weather is fi ne. It’s not going to lead to a dangerous drop in body sodium. Only those who lose lots of sweat for long periods of time run the risk of hyponatremia by drinking pure water. This is advice that doesn’t apply only to athletes or backpackers. It applies to all those who are out working in hot weather and sweating up a storm.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have hypertension, and I go to the beach often. Can salt in salt water get through the skin as medical patches get through the skin? My doctors have increased my dose of medicine and have added additional medicines without much improvement in my blood pressure.Could the salt water I swim in be keeping my blood

pressure high? -- G.S.

ANSWER: G.S., I know I answered this question before, but you must not have seen it. I’ll do it again. The salt in salt water doesn’t get through your skin. Swimming in salt water doesn’t raise blood pres-sure. It improves it. All exercise does.If you miss the answer this time, G.S., I have to drop the question. People will think I’m obsessed with it.The booklet on hypertension provides more de-tails on this epidemic illness. PAWS CORNERBy Sam Mazzotta

Topical Treatments for Flea PreventionDEAR PAW’S CORNER: You recently wrote a long explanation of how to get rid of fl eas on pets and in the house. I have two very large (more than 100 pounds) dogs, very furry, Great Pyrenees. I also have seven cats. I have found with the recent devel-opments in treatments, none of the measures you listed are necessary.I have one cat that is hypersensitive to fl ea saliva. I keep an eye on him, and when I notice the little tell-tale bumps just at the base of his tail, I know we have been infested. I immediately treat all of the animals with either Frontline or Advantage. End of story. No sprays, no bombs, no bathing fi ghting cats. The topical stuff applied between their shoulder-blades kills the fl eas on them. The remaining fl eas in the house and yard jump on the animals to feed, and then are killed. I never have to treat anything but my animals. Even my car interior is fi ne. The stuff lasts 30 days. I simply treat again as many

times as necessary until the frost comes and fl ea season is over.As long as my pets are treated regularly, I don’t have to worry about any hatching eggs: They just hatch, feed and die. So simple and easy. I hope you will consider suggesting this course of treatment. All of the steps you listed easily could discourage someone from becoming a pet owner, and it does not have to be so diffi cult and time-consuming. -- Debbie S., via e-mailDEAR DEBBIE: Thanks! Actually, I have recom-mended topical treatments in the past and used them on my own pets with similar success. How-ever, many of my readers are leery of using a topi-cal treatment, and others tell me it didn’t work at all, particularly with outdoor pets. For them, alter-native prevention and treatment methods must be explored.Send your tips, questions and comments to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or e-mail them to [email protected].

Audrey is a wonderful kitty! She loves to snuggle up and if you’re sitting down, her favorite place to be is in your lap. Although she is a little older, she is spry and likes to bat around a small ball or chase a toy mouse. But her favorite pass time is spending time with her hu-man. She is declawed on her front paws so no need to worry about your furniture! She dislikes loud noises and car rides and will tell you all about it but once she is home she is quiet and content. Audrey would love to be your kitty companion for life!

Montoya Still Trying to Make NASCAR Splash

The new season has brought changes for Juan Pablo Montoya. The owners of his No. 42 car, Chip Ganassi and Felix Sa-

bates, merged their operation with Dale Earnhardt Inc., creating, along with Teresa Earnhardt, Earn-hardt Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. This, in turn, changed the make of Montoya’s car from Dodge to Chevrolet.Improvement, so far, has been modest. Montoya’s teammate, Martin Truex Jr., is 19th in the Sprint Cup point standings. Montoya is 14th. To make the Chase, Montoya must fi nish the regular sea-son in the top 12. He’s only 16 points behind the current occupant of 12th place, Carl Edwards.Montoya, a driver of international renown, is in his third Sprint Cup season. His lone Cup victory oc-curred on June 24, 2007, at Infi neon Raceway in Sonoma, Calif. Montoya was Raybestos Rookie of the Year, but he already had victories in the In-

dianapolis 500 and the Grand Prix of Monaco on his resume. Now, at 33, he is completely focused on becoming a championship contender in stock cars.“We know where we need to go,” he said. “We know what we need to achieve. I think there are a lot of things in the pipeline that are going to make us a little bit better every week. As long as we keep fi nding little things, we’ll be fi ne.“You’ve got to keep fi nding performance. You can-not sit and hope you are going to run well. We’re (not) doing that. We have good ideas of things we need to do, and it’s just a matter of time to see what happens.”Montoya, from Bogota, Colombia, has three top-10 fi nishes so far. Surprisingly, two have been on short tracks. He won his fi rst pole at Talladega Super-speedway on April 24. He thinks he’ll be in victory lane again soon, but recognizes the importance of consistency in making the Chase.“That’s the key to making the Chase, and we know that,” he said. “A lot went into putting these teams together. ... Phoenix (April 18) was the fi rst step to-ward getting everybody on the same page.

Play Better Golf

So you want better golf scores? In that case, you can not run from your house to you car and to the fi rst tee. You must take the time to get to the course early and properly warm up.

To warm up properly, if you are a right handed golfer than you must swing the club left handed for the fi rst fi ve minutes. Then you can hit the ball right handed. If you are a left handed golfer, than you do the reverse by swinging right handed fi rst than hit the golf balls left handed. After you fi n-ish your round, do the same thing, swinging from the opposite side for 5 minutes, to cool down.

Golf is a one sided game. For a right-handed golfer, the right side of the body becomes more strong and tighter, while the other side becomes more fl exible or weaker. For the left-handed golfer, it is the reverse. So, when you swing from the other side, the strong side becomes more fl exible and the fl exible side becomes stronger returning balance to the body so over use injuries do not occur.

Chiropractic can help your golf by ridding your body of nerve interference. Nerve interference causes the muscles to slow down giving you de-creased club head speed, which causes you to lose ball distance leading to increased scores. When your body is free of nerve interference your club head speed will increase and you will hit the ball further causing better scores.
